While Windows has developed and grown, the poor old clipboard function has been somewhat left behind. Say hello to MemoClip, a program that automatically captures everything you cut or copy. You can view your clips, edit them, format them and store them in a handy tree-like structure. It can also handle auto-replace in any application and lets you assign hot keys to frequently used text snippets. Handy for filling in Web forms and extremely configurable, easy to use (when you have played with it a bit) and best of all, free.

Xenu Link Sleuth 1.2

Operating system: Windows 95/98/NT/ME/2000/XP
Licence: Freeware
Minimum system requirements: For instructions on how to 'get started' visit the Web site.
Web: http://home.snafu.de/tilman/xenulink.html

Working with larger Web sites or sites with lots of links can require a fair bit of maintenance. This is where Xenu excels; it’s a link checker with enough configurability and functions to handle any size site. The reporting is comprehensive (sometimes too much so) and the simple interface makes it suitable for any skill level. Highly recommended.

Acid Xpress 3.0

Operating system: Windows 95/98/NT/ME/2000/XP
Licence: Freeware
Minimum system requirements:
Web: http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/products/showproduct.asp?PID=268

When you tire of listening to others' dance music, it must be time to make your own. Enter Acid Xpress, which like its big brother Acid Pro, allows you to paint loops into a multi-track loop sequencer. The syncronisation of beats and pitch is taken care of; all you need do is create or download loops and you’re away. While the advanced features such as envelope drawing are not offered in this free product, it’s more than enough to get you started with music creation using loops. It also only saves in Windows Media format and Real Audio.

Super Dooper Music Looper 1.0

Operating system: Windows 98ME/2000/XP
Licence: Demo
Minimum system requirements:
Web: http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/products/showproduct.asp?PID=535&ms=1

Super Duper Music Looper is best described as Acid Xpress for kids. Paste the pre-supplied audio clips into the window and experiment. The demo doesn’t allow you to do much, but the well-priced full version will let the little ones add their own loops, record sounds and email the finished product. The simple colourful interface is sure to appeal and it’s a great introduction to the world of making music.

CamStudio 2.10

Operating system: Windows 98/NT/ME/2000/XP
Licence: Freeware
Minimum system requirements:
Web: http://www.newfreeware.com/graphics/1752

The process of trying to explain the steps for using a particular application under Windows can be greatly simplified with the help of a training video. This is what CamStudio does - it records screen activity and saves it to a standard AVI file. Better still, you can record an audio track along with your AVI as you capture it. There are options for adding screen annotations in multiple languages, adjusting the quality settings to optimise the file size and even adding a Web cam movie of your self into the clip.

3D Canvas

Operating system: Windows 98/NT/ME/2000/XP
Licence: Freeware
Minimum system requirements: Pentium, 16M RAM, DirectX 8
Web: http://www.amabilis.com

Installation instructions: Please note that 3D Canvas is distributed as a Windows Installer document in order to reduce its download size. Most computers will be able to install 3D Canvas by double-clicking the 3DCanvas Windows Installer file. If double-clicking the 3DCanvas Windows Installer file does not install 3D Canvas you will need to download the Windows Installer. Windows Installer is available here.
If you get a warning that MDAC 2.5 is required before the installation of 3D Canvas you require an update to your Windows' Data Access Components which is available here.

If you've ever considered getting into 3D animation, here's free software that offers the perfect introduction. 3D Canvas is a modeling and animation tool with an easy-to-learn drag-and-drop style. By using basic 3D shapes, complex models can be built and animated. The software itself is very helpful on the animation front by using effective “tweening” - basically you specify a start and end point for an animation and the software creates the smooth movements between these points. The Amablis site has model, textures and plug-ins you can download to get started.
