Carbon is a set of application programming interfaces (APIs) derived from earlier versions of the Mac OS and reimplemented in Mac OS X to take advantage of the advanced features of Mac OS X. With Carbon, your application can make use of the new Aqua user interface, preemptive multitasking, memory protection, and dynamic resource allocation in Mac OS X while maintaining maximum source code compatibility with Mac OS 9 and earlier versions of the Mac OS. This suite comprises the definitive library of Apple's developer documentation for Carbon, organized by topic. This documentation consists of the Inside Carbon suite of API documents and a number of programming guides and tools specific to Carbon development. The Inside Carbon suite contains API reference information for all Carbon technologies supported in Mac OS X and by CarbonLib on Mac OS 8 and 9. Many Inside Carbon documents also contain conceptual material and sample code to further help you revise classic Mac OS applications for Carbon and to create new Carbon applications. Check back for new and updated programming guides and Inside Carbon material, and for the addition of Technical Notes and Technical Q & As. Technical Notes provide up-to-the-minute information about Carbon updates, fixes and workarounds, and programming tips and techniques. Technical Q & As offer answers to frequently asked programming questions. Important You can quickly see what documents have been added or updated to this site by viewing the What's New page.
