The Settings Window

The settings window has a tab panel with three tabs. They are as follows: In addition, the window has a field for the name of this set. It will be shown in the popup menu in the main window so you can distinguish between different settings (one set for CD-ROM authoring, one for your own computer and one for a server, for example).

The Revert button allows you to revert all settings to the values which were selected when opening the window.

The Cancel button closes the window but does not save any changes.

The OK button closes the window and saves any changes to this settings set.

Views

In the Views tab, you can choose how the contents of the windows should be rearranged. These are the same options you can choose in the Finder. You can set the view options separately for icon, button and list views. The default view for the rearranged windows will be the view which is selected in the popup menu in the upper part of the Views panel.

In the lower part of the tab, you can choose what to do with folders containing many items. If you like to, then you choose among the following options:

  • View contents as list
  • Set icon size to medium
  • Ignore this folder (Rearrange Folders will do nothing to the folder so you can later manually rearrange it)
Picture of settings for list viewsFor list views, you have different options. You can choose whether to use relative dates, calculate the size of folders, sorting order and which columns should be shown.

You can also let Rearrange Folders try to get the default values from the Finder preferences. You can see them when you select the Preferences command from the Edit menu while in the Finder.

Window positioning & Screen resolution

Offsetting Folders

You can specify the horizontal and vertical distance of the windows relative to their parent windows. For example, the disk window is a parent to a folder residing on the disk. If you open both then this option lets you specify how the windows are stacked.

Top-level window position
Here you can set the location for the first window in the folder hierarchy which you are going to rearrange. Subfolders are stacked in relation to this window as specifier with the Offsetting Folders option.

Window options

  • Set Window size to
This option allows you to change the size the windows so every window will have the same size.
  • Zoom windows before positioning
This option zooms windows before their final position on the screen is calculated. If it contains only a few items, then the Finder will reduce the size of the window. On the other hand, if the folder is packed full with items, the window will become larger.

Screen resolution

This popup menu lets you specify the screen size for which the folders will be optimized. This is useful when you want to ensure that every window will be visible even when using smaller screen sizes. It contains standard macintosh screen resolutions and the options to use:

  • 640 * 480
  • 800 * 600
  • 832 * 624
  • 1024 * 768
  • 1152 * 870
  • 1280 * 1024
  • 1600 * 1200
  • Current main screen resolution
  • This option will save the resolution which you are currently having on your screen
  • Auto-adjust (main screen resolution)
  • This option will cause Rearrange Folders to always use the resolution which you main screen happens to have when a rearranging process starts
  • Other...
  • Here you can specify non-standard screen resolutions for monitors I could not even dream of...

Processing speed & Excluding

Processing speed

Checking one of these options will cause Rearrange Folders to skip some steps while rearranging.

  • Ignore all view options
  • Checking this checkbox will cause Rearrange Folders to only set window positions and sizes. This means that the options from the Views tab will not be used at all.
  • Ignore icon/button view options
  • With this option selected, the view of of the folders will be set to icon or button view (if list view is not selected to be default) but the other options (icon/button size, arrangement etc.) are not set.
  • Ignore list view options
  • If checked, folders can be set to list views but the other options will not be set (which columns are visible, sorting etc.)

Excluding System folder settings

If you do not want to rearrange your System folder or some folders inside the System folder when rearranging your startup volume the you can use these options. The System folder can contain very many subfolders and they are not accessed very often by users so we decided to provide the option to exclude them in order to save time.
