The main window

In the main window, there are four major parts. Some of them can be hidden by resizing the window to conserve screen space. The parts are:

Window resizing

If you reduce the height then the "Rearrange Folders" graphic will be hidden. Reducing the height more causes also the settings box to disappear. If you want to hide the browser box then you can reduce the width of the window. If you want to show them again, just make the window large enough.

In the browser box, you can browse your disks and folders. You can drag a disk or folder from here to the drop box on the right side of the main window. Under the browser box are two checkboxes. With those you can choose whether you want to see one of the following:
  • all files,
  • only disks, folders and aliases to disks and folders, or
  • only disks and folders

You can drag a folder or disk into the drop box. You can drag it from the browser box or directly from the Finder. When you drop the folder (or disk) here, Rearrange Folders will count the number of folders inside the folder or disk. It also calculates the number of files in those folders.

You can have multiple sets of settings. For example, you might want to have one set for producing CD-ROMs which might be used by someone with a small monitor so you would need it to make sure that every window will fit on that screen. Another setting would be used for your 21 inch screen.
You can use the popup menu to select the set of settings you want to use with the selected folder. Click on the "Modify..." button to make changes to the settings set.
If you have multiple settings then you can delete the current one (but not if it is the last one).
You can share your settings also with colleagues or friends. That is why we have the "Export..." button so you can save a set of settings to a separate file. And when you need to import settings, just drag the file into the settings box!

The Start Rearranging button

Of course, all the action is really behind this button! Click on this button and Rearrange Folders starts rearranging the folder you have selected and every folder inside that folder. You can even see it doing its work in the Finder. A progress window will also be shown so you can see how Rearrange Folders is doing and it can even give a rough estimate of the time remaining.
