What is FTP++? Features of FTP++
Fastream FTP++ is the next generation multi-threaded FTP client for 32 bit Windows platforms. It enables you to upload multiple files/directories from your computer to FTP servers and download multiple files/directories from FTP servers to your computer simultaneously. It can delete remote and local directories recursively. It also handles "hard links" found on UNIX servers. Bulk UNIX chmod operations are also implemented. It works with all firewalls (not fully tested). Supports download/upload resuming after broken connections. Fastream FTP++ also includes a new innovative feature called FTP++ Linking which enables ftp sites to link each other just like web sites. Here is the list of features of FTP++:
Very fast and reliable
User friendly with its explorer style user interface making it the easiest to use FTP program ever!
Multi threaded and multi tasking - enables multiple operations from multiple servers simultaneously
Short download time (executable installation package size < 1.3mb)
Supports resuming of half files/directories
Supports recursive file/directory download/upload/delete operations
UNIX type hard links are implemented
Supports bulk chmod operations on GUI (on Graphical User Interface).
Developed in Borland C++ Builder using object oriented programming techniques
Supports all known firewalls
AND A NEW FEATURE: "FTP++ LINKING" (Patent Pending)
System Requirements & Installation
Fastream FTP++ works on Windows 95/98/ME/NT4/2000. 3 Mb free hard disc space and 4mb of free RAM and virtual memory are required. An active Internet connection is required to reach the built-in FTP sites.
In order to install, simply double click on the program icon and follow the instructions. If you face any problems doing so, try downloading the latest version from FTP++ web page at http://www.fastream.com/ftppp.htm .
What kind of software is FTP++? (How to register and remove ads?)
FTP++ is adware. This means it is try-before-you-buy kind of software. You can try it as long as you like. While in unregistered mode, ads will be shown in program windows. To remove the ads you must purchase license(s) from Fastream. The single license price - as of September 2000 - is US $19.95. You can pay with your credit card via a secure (128 bit SSL) connection from our web site at http://www.fastream.com/register.htm. For multiple license fees and check orders, email us at orders@fastream.com. The key you'll get via licensing will work through all 2.xx versions.
How to configure Firewalls and Proxies?
After installing FTP++, restart and then click on its icon from the start menu. What you will see is the main window of FTP++. Select "Firewall & Proxy Options" from the options menu. Enable whichever one would like to enable and enter relevant information. The information you entered will be kept in ftp++.ini file in your installation directory.
You can open FTP++'s "connect to" window by selecting "Connect" from "Commands" menu or by simply clicking on connect on the toolbar. Once you have done that, you will see the "FTP Connection Parameters" window. In this window, you manually enter site information and save that information in a category folder you like or you can select from previously saved sites. When you load the program first time, you will notice that there is an empty folder called "Private". This folder is reserved for your personal ftp site information such as your web site and everything that is put under this folder will be saved in "private.ini" with passwords encrypted. ALL other sites will be saved into "public.ini" in the same location as private.ini. The reason for this is collaboration: you can share your public.ini with anyone safely and the receiver can easily concatanate your public.ini with his. This way you can build Yahoo-like lists of ftp sites easily and securely because all the sensitive information is stored in a seperate file. When entering your own site information, if you don't know the password or you especially want to connect anonymously, check anonymous radio box. This way you won't be asked any username and password. SiteName points to the name of the site. If you want to add additional comments, use the "Description" box. Once you have entered the information, you can first select a folder by clicking on it (or create a new one using "New Folder" button) and save the site by clicking on "Save Site" button. Using the easy-to-understand buttons, you can rename sites and folders, delete sites and folders, and cut-paste sites and folders. All you have to do is select the site or folder you want to operate on and click on the relevant button and follow the rest of the instructions.
Finally click on the "Go" button and go!
How to disconnect from FTP sites?
Select "Disconnect" from the commands menu. This will close the FTP connection.
Once connected, you will notice that the home directory listing is automatically taken and reflected on the controls on the FTP box. If you want to change directory, double click on the directory you want on the listview or right click on a directory and select "Change Directory". This will retrieve the new directory structure. If you want to go up 1 directory, click on the up button. If you want to refresh the listing of files and directories in the same directory, click on the "Refresh" button. (the bottm-most button on the right of the FTP box).
Click on the "abort" button in the FTP box. Any action will be cancelled gracefully.
In order to download file(s) or folder(s), you must first be connected. After that stage find files or folders you want to download and select them (by left-clicking on them). Then click on the download button or select download from the context or main menu. This will bring in the selection window. During the download you will be prompted if any of the files are already present partly or fully and have to confirm as "Resume", "Overwrite", or "Skip". Resume will download the partly available file from where it has left. Overwrite will re-download the file and the skip will not download the file, skipping to the next item on the selected objects.
Select items from My Computer Box this time, click on the upload button instead of the download one and the rest is same as download.
For local items, select the items and choose delete from the right-mouse click context menu. For remote items, select the items and click delete from the bar. (Note: this action is irreversible) Alternatively, you can click on the Delete buttons.
How to Create FTP++ Links or Folders (Directories)?
Click on the "New Object" button in FTP box. Then when the "Create new object" window appears select the object type you want to create by clicking on either radio buttons. If your selection is a folder, enter its name. If it is a link, select the link from your bookmarks. Pressing on the Ok button will create the object. Double clicking on any ftp++ link will open up a new connection to that site.
How to edit the permission properties of FTP objects?
Click on the "Properties" button on the right-click-context-menu. Select and deselect the permissions you desire. But you have to have the necessary permissions on the server to do this operation.
How to change FTP transfer mode?
In FTP++, the transfer mode is set in the "Connection Options" window which is in "Options" menu. Our advise is to leave the setting in "Auto" mode which will decide on the transfer type of the files according to the rules set. The kind of files whose extensions are listed in the listbox will be transferred (uploaded/downloaded) in ASCII mode. All others wil be transferred in image (binary) mode. If you want to force a type yourself, select ASCII of Binary.
FTP server feature of FTP++ enables other internet users to download files from your computer. To enable this feature, select "Server->Launch Server" from main program menu. Do NOT forget to set the root directory by selecting "Tools->Set Root Directory" from menu of newly created window. The files below the selected directory will be available on the net. So be careful specifying your root directory.
