If you saved it, SurfSaver will find it. This chapter explains SurfSaver's quick and powerful searches.

To Search

1. You start a SurfSaver search from your browser.



2. In your browser, start SurfSaver and choose the "SurfSaver Search" menu command.
The SurfSaver Search dialog appears.

In order for the Search Dialog to appear, your browser must have Java Script enabled


3. Select the folder (or folders) you wish to search, and then enter your request. Choose the SEARCH button to start searching.


If you wish to view all the pages in a folder (or folders), choose the LIST ALL button.


4. Your browser screen will split. The bottom part of the screen displays the titles of the pages that match your search request.



5. Click on the title of the page you want to view. It will appear in the top part of the browser screen.


NOTE: The first time you choose the SurfSaver Search command, the SurfSaver Title Screen appears behind the Search dialog. This screen contains buttons that link to the SurfSaver Documentation, FAQs, and Feedback. There is also a button to upgrade to SurfSaver Pro. You can access the SurfSaver Title screen by clicking on the SurfSaver graphic on the left part of the Search Results button bar.

The Search Dialog

The Search dialog lets you search the Web pages you've saved. The search you enter can be a single word, or you can fill out multiple fields in the search dialog.

 

The Search dialog contains the following components:

FILING CABINETS AND FOLDERS

You can organize your Web pages in filing cabinets and folders. The left part of the Search dialog displays a list of the current filing cabinets and folders. SurfSaver searches the checked folders. You can search multiple folders by checking multiple folders. To search all folders, check the "Select All" option (checking "Select All" a second time unchecks all folders).

The buttons below the folders let you create new filing cabinets, folders or delete existing ones.

BROWSE BUTTON (only available in the Pro version)

This button lets you select the drive and directory which contain the folder or folders you wish to search.

FULL TEXT

Enter the word or words you wish to find. SurfSaver searches the text of the Web page as well as the contents of all fields for the specified word(s). You can include Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) and wildcards (* and ?) in your searches. You can also use the NEAR command to find words which appear close to each other.

Examples:

• askSam Internet
  Finds pages containing the words "askSam" and "Internet" anywhere on the page (or in the title, keywords, or notes).
• askSam OR Internet NOT Documentation
  Finds all pages containing either " askSam " or "Internet" but not the word "Documentation".
• [Windows 2000]
  Finds all pages containing the phrase "Windows 2000" (rather than just pages containing the word "Windows" and the word "2000"). The brackets [ and ] denote that the words must be together in the page.
• German*
  Finds pages containing any word beginning with "German" - for example "Germany", "Germans", and "Germanic".
• 80?86
  The question mark replaces a single character. The above request finds pages containing 80286, 80386, 80486 - it would not locate pages containing 8086.
• {fuzzy} Kathy
  A fuzzy search is useful when you are not sure of the exact spelling of a word. The above request finds pages containing the words "Kathy", "Cathy", "Kathy", or "Kathi".
• illegal NEAR search
  Finds all pages where the word "illegal" appears within 5 words of "search". In the Options dialog you can define how the NEAR command will function. For example, you could change NEAR to mean that "illegal" must appear in the same paragraph as "search". See the description of the Options dialog for details.

Searches in SurfSaver are not case sensitive. A search for "askSam" will locate pages containing "ASKSAM", "askSam", and "askSam".
 

TITLE
Search for a word or phrase in the Title field.

Examples:

• Windows 2000
  Finds all pages containing the phrase "Windows 2000" in the Title (rather than just pages containing the word "Windows" and the word "2000").
• Microsoft AND Netscape
  Finds all pages contains the words “Microsoft” and “Netscape in the Title.
• Microsoft OR Netscape
  Finds all pages containing either “Microsoft” or “Netscape” in the Title.
   

KEYWORDS
Search for a word or phrase in the Keywords field.
 
NOTES
Search for a word or phrase in the Notes field.
 
URL
Search in the URL field. This is useful if you wish to locate all pages you've saved from a specific site. For example, you could search for "*www.askSam.com*" to find all pages you've saved from the askSam Web site. You do not need to enter the entire address (URL), you can enter parts that appear between periods. For example, entering "askSam" would retrieve the same pages as the above expression.
 
DATE
Search for pages saved in a date range that you specify. For example: find all pages saved between November 10 and November 20.
 
USER (only available in the Pro version)
Search for pages saved by a specific user.
 
MATCH ALL FIELDS / MATCH ANY FIELD
This setting determines whether the search places a Boolean AND or a Boolean OR between the different fields. For example, if you search for “stock price” in the Full Text field and “Intel” in the Title field:

With Match All selected, SurfSaver finds pages with Intel in the Title and the words “stock” and “price” anywhere on the page.

With Match Any selected, SurfSaver finds all page with Intel in the Title or all pages with the words “stock” and “price” anywhere on the page.

The Buttons in the Search dialog

	Searches using the request that you've entered.
	Lists all pages stored in a folder or in multiple folders (depending on whether you've checked multiple folders).
	Cancels the Search dialog
	Displays the Options dialog

Search Results

After you search, your browser screen will split. The Search Results window appears in the bottom part of your screen. This window displays the titles of the pages that match your search request.


Click on the title of the page you want to view. It will appear in the top part of the browser screen.
