StorageExpress(TM) system: Recovering a NetWare v3.1x File Server

REBUILDING A 3.1X NETWARE FILE SERVER USING STORAGEEXPRESS

       Introduction

This document will describe how to recover a NetWare 3.1x file server

using the Intel StorageExpress Backup Server in the case of a hard disk

replacement. This is ONLY a basic outline of the tasks needed to

accomplish this recovery. Individual recoveries will vary based on

options and hardware differences. Be sure to reference the NetWare 3.11

Installation manual for complete instructions. It may also be a good

idea to include the original person who created the file server in this

       process.

       Rebuilding the File Server

Under NetWare 3.11, the restore process includes rebuilding the DOS (C:)

partition(s), rebuilding the NetWare partition and recreating the

NetWare volume(s), reloading the base network communication module,

loading other loadable modules as needed and restoring the server files.

       Rebuild DOS Partition

The Intel StorageExpress system does not back up the DOS (C: or boot)

partition(s) on the file server. If you do not have a backup copy of

the file server DOS partition, have the NetWare 3.11 disks as well as

the disks that have the .LAN and .DSK files for your file server readily

available and follow the steps below. Most likely, the only files that

are stored on the DOS partition are the files, drivers and NetWare

Loadable Modules (NLMs) needed to start the file server.

         1. Copy the SERVER.EXE file from the NetWare System-1 disk to the DOS

            drive.

         2. Copy the INSTALL.NLM file from the NetWare System-2 disk to the DOS

            drive.

         3. Copy all .DSK and .LAN files from the appropriate disks to the DOS

            drive.

         4. Run SERVER.EXE, input the server name (use the same name the

fileserver originally had) and the server internal network number.

From the colon prompt, load the appropriate .DSK files (user may

change the name of the server later).

Rebuild the NetWare partition and recreate the NetWare volume(s):

         1. Load the INSTALL.NLM.

         2. From the Disk Options/Partition Tables/Create NetWare Partition

menu option, create the desired NetWare partition(s).

         3. From Volume Options menu option, press insert in the Volumes

screen. NetWare will automatically enter the Volume name SYS:.

Press enter to accept this as the first volume name. Change the

options as needed. Other volumes can be added by pressing insert

in the Volumes screen and adding the desired name for the volume

and adding the desired configuration (use the same volume names

            orginally used).

         4. Mount the volume(s) created in the previous step. From the Volume

Options menu option, select the volume to mount. Press the

down-arrow key to get to the status field. Press enter to get the

Volume Status screen. Select Mount Volume. Repeat process for

            other volumes.

         5. Normally at this point in an installation, the operating system and

utility files are loaded into the SYS:SYSTEM and SYS:PUBLIC

directories. This step is skipped because the StorageExpress

system has these backed up and will restore these for you.

Load other loadable modules as appropriate

Load the appropriate Name Spaces (MAC, NFS, etc.) modules and add them

to the correct volumes. The MAC.NAM module will be on the NetWare v3.11

distribution diskettes and the others will be on separate release

       diskettes from Novell.

The sample commands below are for the Macintosh Name space:

            * At the colon prompt type: Load mac.nam

            * Add name space macintosh "volume name" (where "volume name"

       is SYS, etc.).

Note: this command only needs to be loaded once for each

volume, the command is not added to the STARTUP.NCF or

            AUTOEXEC.NCF.)

       Load the network communication drivers

Load the appropriate .LAN driver for the Ethernet or Token Ring

interface card(s). Bind IPX to the .LAN driver and enter the external

       network number.

Load the SMS Target Service Agents

If the backup was done using SMS, load the TSA and TSA-311 that matches

the backup version. Remember, that the NetWare v3.11 release TSA and

TSA-311 are old versions and will not work properly. Be sure to load

the TSA NLM v3.11B or later. v1.41A.E. uses TSA311.NLM v4.00A.

Create the STARTUP.NCF and AUTOEXEC.NCF files

         *  Load the INSTALL.NLM.

         * From the System Options/Create STARTUP.NCF file add or edit the

appropriate commands for this file if needed. For example: Name

support is loaded in this file. (LOAD MAC.NAM)

         * Choose the Create AUTOEXEC.NCF file and edit or add to the file if

            needed.

         *  Exit the Install program

At this time, you can login to the file server using the default

security, SUPERVISOR with no password. Since no files have been loaded,

you will only see some maintenance files and the default

       sub-directories:

            VOL$LOG.ERR

            TTS$LOG.ERR

            LOGIN (DIR)

            MAIL (DIR)

            PUBLIC (DIR)

            SYSTEM (DIR)

Logout prior to the restore process.

       Restore server files

The restore operation requires two passes.

Note: No one should be logged into the target server while the

                 restore process is occuring.

         1. Use the Intel StorageExpress system Central Console to select the

latest NetWare bindery file set for the server. These files reside

            in the \SYSTEM directory.

                 NET$OBJ.SYS

               NET$PROP.SYS

               NET$VAL.SYS

During this process, using the Central Console software, you will

get prompted for a password on the server you are about to restore,

since the server is in a default state there will be no password.

Run this job and when complete, DOWN the target server and re-boot

            it to its normal mode.

         2. Start the normal complete restore option (see the StorageExpress

system reference manual for instructions). During this process, the

Central Console software will also prompt for a password on the

server you are about to restore. Since the server now has its

original Bindery and it has been loaded (during boot), use the

original SUPERVISOR password. If any hardware or anything that is

designated in the AUTOEXEC.NCF has changed since the original

installation, you will need to exclude this file from the restore

process so that the new one is not overwritten by the original.

If restoring data volumes, make sure the target server name is the

same as the original server name and the SYS: volume is restored

first. If you do not name the target server the same as the

original, or the SYS: volume is restored after the data volume(s),

the User and Group Trustee Rights to the data volume(s) will not be

            restored.

After the restore is complete, the server will be in its original

state. The server does not need to be DOWNed and restarted at this

            point.
