Files List Window Menu Options
From this FILE menu option, you can do all the operations that you can
do with files.
If you decide that you would like to ADD some more files to the Files List, then use this option. This will ADD files as opposed to clearing the list first. For selecting multiple files click here.
If you want additional DETAILED information about SEARCHING, Click Here.
If you want to search the files list, use this option. This utility is great for finding duplicate files on your system by various methods. While searching large lists you can abort the search by clicking on the "ABORT SEARCH" button. After the search is completed, you can scroll thru the results window and even save it out to a file.
It's a GOOD IDEA to have ALL your picture files in your system to be in the Files List. That way you can find dups no matter what forgotten folder they may be hidden in. In case you forgot, this is how you can LOAD UP THE FILES LIST. Personally, I like to use the LOAD ALL IMAGES FROM ALL DRIVES option.
NOTE: Since the results window is not real wide, if you see a file in the window that is a real long filename, you won't be able to see the complete filename. In order to see the WHOLE filename, you can CLICK on the line containing the long text string. Then you will notice that the hint for that window becomes the long text string. :)
You can search by the following methods:
BY DUPLICATE WHOLE FILENAME
This searches the files list for files that have the same filename.
You can optionally specify a starting column. By default it starts at position
1. For example: Let's say you have a bunch of vacation pictures from 3
different vacations. And that they are called V1-????? and V2-????? and
V3-????? where the "?????" can be any filename. In this case V1-BESTPIC.JPG
would NOT match V3-BESTPIC.JPG. If you wanted them to match then you would
set the starting position to 4. So instead of looking at the "V" it would
start the compare starting at the "B".
BY DUPLICATE PARTIAL FILENAME
Same as above, except that this makes looks for PARTIAL filenames.
For example: Let's say that you wanted these two files to match:
PB_PAM_001.JPG
PAMELA.JPG
As you can see the text string "PAM" appears in both of them, but in different locations. If you KNEW that you wanted to look for any file that had "PAM" in it then you SHOULD use the "BY GIVEN PARTIAL FILENAME". This is because that option is MANY TIMES FASTER than this option. Where this option comes in handy is where you have tons of files and you want to know all files that match on anything. So for example:
V1-BEST.JPG
V3-MY_BEST.JPG
V4_YOUR-BEST.JPG
Would match on "BEST" and:
CINDY001.JPG
PB_CINDY_JPG
PENT_CIN_001.JPG
Would match on "CIN"
So this is the best way to look for filenames that have parts of the
filenames that match in other filenames AND you don't know what to look
for to begin with!
BY DUPLICATE WHOLE DB FIELD
This searches just like the "BY DUPLICATE WHOLE FILENAME" option does,
except it uses the Notes DataBase field that is displayed in the Files
List Window "DB FIELD" column. If you want to do more complicated searching
against the database then use the "Search/Edit
And Load From DataBase" option.
BY DUPLICATE PARTIAL DB FIELD
This option is like the "BY DUPLICATE PARTIAL FILENAME" option, except
that it searches the column that is displayed in the DB FIELD column in
the Files List Window. Again, if you know the partial text string you want
to search for, then use the "BY GIVEN DB FIELD" instead.
BY DUPLICATE FILE SIZE
This finds all files that have the same size. Sometimes this is useful
for finding duplicate files.
BY DUPLICATE FILE DATE
This finds all files that have the same date. Sometimes this is useful
for finding duplicate files.
BY DUPLICATE FILE DATE AND SIZE
This finds all files that match on DATE AND SIZE. This VERY useful
for finding duplicates. Chances are pretty good that if they match on date
and size that the files are in fact dups.
BY DUPLICATE DATE AND SIZE AND FILENAME
This finds all files that match on DATE AND SIZE AND FILENAME. This
VERY useful for finding duplicates. Chances are, that if they match on
date and size AND filename, that the files are in fact dups of each other.
This is great for finding files that you have copied to some other folder
and you forgot about it. The FILENAME used here is the complete filename
WITH the extension.
BY GIVEN FILENAME
If you know a filename to look for, then type it in and the Files List
will be searched. File Extensions are ignored. For example: If you typed
in PLANET, then "PLANET.BMP" and "PLANET.GIF" would both match.
BY GIVEN DB FIELD
This is similar to "BY GIVEN FILENAME", except the DB FIELD column
is used instead of the Filename.
BY GIVEN PARTIAL FILENAME
If you are unsure of the complete filename to look for, you can type
in a partial filename to look for. For example: If you typed in "CAT",
it would find "CATALOG.JPG" and "CATS.GIF" and "DUPLICATE.BMP" and "CATCH.ICO".
BY GIVEN PARTIAL DB FIELD
This is similar to "BY GIVEN PARTIAL FILENAME", except that the DB
FIELD column is used instead of the Filename.
NOTE:
Before searching, you can specify that you want the matching files
to be TAGGED. Also, instead of searching the entire Files List, you can
optionally specify to only search the files that are HI-LITED. As another
BONUS, you can save the matching list to a text file of your choice.
NOTE:
After you have found some duplicate files, you can COMPARE 2 of them
to see if they are IDENTICAL files.
This option allows you to CONVERT the graphic format of all the tagged files to a new specified format. This is great if you want to convert all scanned large BMP files to a smaller JPG file.
This option allows you to REMOVE all the tagged files from the Files List Window. NOTE: This will NOT delete the files from your hard drive. They are merely taken away from the Files List display.
This option allows you to MOVE all the tagged files to a new specified folder location.
This option allows you to DELETE all the tagged files from your drives. Be careful with this option as you will NOT be able to get those files back if you made a mistake, unless you open up the TurboView's Recycle Bin and restore the deleted files you mistakenly deleted.
This option allows you to COPY all the tagged files over to a different folder location.
This option allows you to RENAME all the tagged files using one of several different rename options. Below is a complete description of all the ways you can rename groups of files.
Add To FRONT of FileName
This will insert some letters into the front of the filenames that are
tagged. So for example: PARIS001.JPG would become TRIP_PARIS001.JPG
if the letters to add were "TRIP_".
Add To END of FileName
This will add some letters to the end of the filenames that are tagged.
So for example: PARIS001.JPG would become PARIS001_GOOD.JPG
if the letters to add were "_GOOD".
Replace FIRST few characters
This will REPLACE some letters AT THE FRONT of the filenames that are tagged. So for example: 0001_PARIS.JPG would become VAC1_PARISJPG if the letters to replace were "VAC". This method of renaming shoud be used CAREFULLY because you could EASILY wind up with filenames that are identical and thus can NOT rename. For example, let's say you had these 3 files:
001_PARIS.JPG
002_PARIS.JPG
003_PARIS.JPG
And let's further assume that the letters to replace at the front will
be "VAC". You can quickly see the problem. You will end up with
all files being renamed to "VAC_PARIS.JPG". Obviously you can't
have 3 files by the same name in the same folder. So, if these 3 tagged
files were in the same folder, only the first one would actually rename
and the other 2 would produce errors indicating that they couldn't rename.
Delete FIRST few characters
This will delete the first few characters from the front of the filenames that are tagged. So for example: 001_PARIS_A.JPG would become PARIS_A.JPG if the number of letters to delete were 4.
NOTE: As with the "Replace FIRST few characters" option,
you have to be careful NOT to end up with filenames that will end up being
the same after they are renamed!
Delete LAST few characters
This will delete the last few characters from the end of the filenames that are tagged. So for example: PARIS_A_001.JPG would become PARIS_A.JPG if the number of letters to delete were 4.
NOTE: As with the "Replace FIRST few characters" option, you have to be careful NOT to end up with filenames that will end up being the same after they are renamed!
This option allows you to password protect what ever files you have currently tagged. For a complete description on Password Protection, click here.
This option allows you to specify what folder will be used when COPYing tagged files.
This option allows you to specify what folder will be used when MOVEing tagged files.
This option allows you to PRINT the currently displayed picture or all of the tagged files. Each tagged picture is printed on a separate page. You MUST have at least one picture tagged if you decide to use a print option of "Print TAGGED Only". The PRINT Sub-Menu options are the same as the print sub-menu options in the main TurboView file/print menu.
This option allows you to RENAME the currently HI-LITED file. If you have more than ONE file hi-lited then it will rename the FIRST hi-lited file only. If you want to rename a lot of files at a time in a SIMILAR fashion, then use the "Rename Tagged Files" option.
HINT: To QUICKLY rename the hi-lited file, just position the mouse over the filename portion of the row of information. You will notice that the cursor changes from the arrow to an I-Beam. Then click on the line. If the file to rename is NOT already hi-lited, then click the file, then click in the filename area AGAIN. Be careful not to DBL-Click, so make sure your clicks are slow. Just like in Window Explorer/File Manager, it will bring up a rename box so you can edit the filename.
CATALOGING
This option allows you to take the currently TAGGED files and arrange as many shrunken images as possible onto a printed page. These catalog pages can also be saved to JPG or BMP files as well for later review. The catalog pages are shown on the right hand side of the screen. You can place your mouse over any thumb in the catalog preview window and it's filename is displayed above the preview window. If you DOUBLE-CLICK on the thumb-image a LARGE PREVIEW window is displayed for that picture so you can better see what image was in the catalog.
There are many options to customize how the output will look like.
ROWS
You can control how many rows of thumbails you will see on the page.
Of course the more rows, the SMALLER each thumb will look. You can go from
1 to 20 rows of thumbnails. And of course 1 ROW will produce ONE IMAGE
PER CATALOG PAGE.
THUMBNAIL SHAPE
You can control the grid-like pattern of thumbs on the page. For example:
If you selected POSTER, then a preallocated grid is produced. It assumes
that the images are taller than they are wide. If you have a images that
are wider than tall, then these will still show in the grid, but there
will be some wasted space in the grid. If you selected LANDSCAPE, then
the preallocated grid is produced with the assumption that the images are
WIDER than they are tall. If you have images that are taller than wide,
then these images will produce some wasted space in the grid pattern. If
you select SQUARE, then it assumes that most images are square in dimension.
Again wasted space is produced for images that are not square.
THE BEST choice is BEST FIT mode. This is because NO preallocated grid is produced. And since no grid is made, no wasted space is ever encountered. It just jams as many images onto a row as it can. Once the row is filled up it moves on to the next row. You might think, "Why not ALWAYS use this option?", well actually 80% of the time you will probably want to. The only disadvantage to this option is that since it's NOT a grid you can't PRE-CALCulate how many images WILL be on a page and it doesn't look as esthetically nice. Also, if you have some REAL THIN images, the filename that gets printed below each pic might not all fit into the space of a thin image.
PAGE RANGE FOR OUTPUT
You can select 3 different ways to determine what page(s) of the catalog
to output. You can select ALL and that will output ALL of the pages. It
could be very many so be careful:) You can select CURRENT PAGE and
that will output only the currently previewed catalog. You can also select
PAGE RANGES. This is very flexible. You can control exactly what pages
you want printed. For example: You could enter 1,5,10-10,4,18-20 in the
page range field. This would output pages 1, then 5, then 10, then 4, then
18 thru 20.
DESTINATION OUPUT
This selects where you want the output to go. The normal place for
the output would be the printer. So if you wanted to PRINT the catalog
pages, select PRINTED PAPER. If you wanted the output to go to a file instead,
you can select any of the file options; 320x200 or 640x480 or 800x600 etc...
The bigger the resolution the bigger the output file will be in RESOLUTION
and SPACE.
PRINT/SAVE PAGE(S)
Once all the options are set, you can finally click in the "Print/Save
Page(s)" button. This starts the output process going. If you had seleced
PRINTED PAPER then the catalog pages are sent to the printer. If you had
selected a FILE for output then clicking this button will ask you for a
filename for the catalog files. You can use either JPG or BMP for the catalog
files. If you had selected a LARGE number of catalog pages to be produced,
then you can always STOP the process by clicking on the STOP button that
is displayed while making the catalog pages.
NOTE: The catalog filenames created may not be what you thought. For example: If you used "CAT_PARIS.JPG" and 3 pages are output, then the final filenames will be "CAT_PARIS_1.JPG, CAT_PARIS_2.JPG, CAT_PARIS_3.JPG". As you can see, it takes whatever filename you typed in and it ADDS _# to the filename. Where "#" is a number. When you type in a filename, it looks to see if it could overwrite any existing catalog files. Let's say that your disk had these three Paris files mentioned above. If you were to create a new catalog and then called it "CAT_PARIS.JPG" it will advise you that you COULD overwrite some existing catalog files. Let's pretend that this new catalog will only produce 1 file. Then it would only overwrite the CAT_PARIS_1.JPG file. The other 2 will be left alone. Also lets pretend that instead of CAT_PARIS_1 thru 3, that the filenames were really CAT_PARIS_5 thru 10. Then if you were to use CAT_PARIS.JPG", you would STILL get the same warning message because it thinks that it is POSSIBLE that one of those files could be overwritten depending on how many output files were created. So, you can see that even though you may get a warning message, it's NOT A FACT that those existing catalog files in question will get overwritten.
PRINTER SETUP
This brings up the standard Windows Printer Setup window so you can
change to landscape or portrait mode etc...
The right hand side of the catalog window shows a preview window of what the catalog WOULD look like. Underneath the preview are 3 things you can click on.
PREVIEW PAGE
This forces the page to be re-built in case it's blank. If you want
it to automatically be rebuilt every time you change an option, you might
consider checking the box called "AUTO PREVIEW PAGE". You might also be
advised that by doing that, you will SLOW down the amount of time it takes
between changes in the catalog options. But on faster computers, it's still
pretty fast.
AUTO PREVIEW PAGE
This forces the preview window to be updated everytime a change is
made to the catalog options. This slows things down a little bit.
CURRENT PAGE
You can specify what page number of the catalog you wish to be viewing.
Of course as you increase the number of rows in the catalog, the number
of pages in the catalog will go down.
This option allows you to take the currently displayed file in the Files List Windows and make it the displayed file when you exit back to the Main Display window for TurboView.
This option exits the Files List Window and goes back to the Main Display for TurboView without changing the file that is displayed.
From this VIEW menu option, you can do all the VIEWING operations that
you can do with files.
You can choose between one of two options. You can either select DETAILED Mode which shows all the pertinant information about each file as a list of rows. Each row showing filesize, filedate, image resolution etc... OR, you can view in Thumbnail mode which just shows you a grid of thumbnail icons for you to click on. The thumbnail size can be changed by clicking on "Size Of Thumbnails" in the VIEW menu pulldown.
See also:
This makes the File List Window display the files in detailed mode. In detailed mode, you get to see many columns of info.
FILENAME
This is the name of the file.
SIZE
This is the amount of disk space taken by the file.
MODIFIED
This is the date the file was created or last modified.
COLORS
This tells you how many colors are possible in the file. 16M means
16 million.
DIMENSIONS
This indicates the Width & Height of the picture
TYPE
This specifies the file type. USUALLY this is the same as the File's
extension.
MOVIE
This tells you if the file is like a movie. For example: AVI, FLI,
FLC are all movie files and thus would show "YES" in this column. In addition
ANIMATED GIF files would also show "YES" in this column.
DB FIELD
This column by default show the NOTES field from the DataBase for the
file. If the file is NOT in the DataBase, then this field will be blank.
You can of course specify which database field you want to display in this
column. To find out how, click here.
FOLDER
This shows the PATH/DIRECTORY location for the file.
This makes the File List Window display the files in THUMB mode. In THUMB mode, you get to see many tiny pictures at once. This is handy if you are not sure what filename you want to look at, but you know what picture you want to look at :)
HINT: The thumbnail size can be changed by clicking on "Size Of Thumbnails" in the VIEW menu pulldown.
This allows you to change the size of the thumbnails. You can pick from many different sizes. You can pick from very small, all the way to very large.
This makes the File List Window display MORE files at once. This is done by getting rid of the bottom half of the Files List Window. You can of course UN-check this option to get that bottom panel back again.
This is the same as double clicking or pressing RETURN/ENTER on the current picture in the preview window. This opens up a LARGE Preview window. To learn more about LARGE PREVIEWS, click here.
From this TAG OPTIONS menu option, you can do all the operations that
you can do with tagged files, like COPY, MOVE, DELETE etc... You can TAG
ALL files by using the NO TAGS then the FLIP TAGS.
This allows you to tag MULTIPLE files at once. If you just single click on a file, then you will HI-LITE ONE file. You can easily HI-LITE many files at once using the CTRL and SHIFT keys. Once you have HI-LITED all the files you want, use this menu option to TAG them all. This places a check mark by each name HI-LITED. For more information about using the CTRL and SHIFT keys, click here.
NOTE: After you have TAGGED some files there are many operations you can do to those tagged files. Such as, COPY, MOVE, DELETE etc...
This is the opposite of the TAG SELECTED function. This takes all the HI-LITED files and removes the tag status (check mark). For more information about HI-LITEing files and using the CTRL and SHIFT keys, click here.
This reverses all of the tags(check marks) for all the files in the FILES LIST. So if a file was tagged, it will become UN-tagged. If it wasn't tagged, then it will become tagged.
This makes it so that NO files are tagged. It removes all of the check marks from all files.
NOTE: If you use this option then use the FLIP TAGS option, you effectively are TAGGING ALL FILES :)
From this SORT BY menu option, you can do all the operations that you can do with sorting files. Sorting the FILES LIST is very handy for many reasons. For example: If you wanted to see all the black & white images together and all the 16 color images together, then you could SORT BY COLORS. If you wanted to see all files that were MOVIE type of file<even animated GIFs>, then you could SORT BY MOVIE. If you had lots of files from many different folders in the FILES LIST and you wanted to see what files were in what folder, you could SORT BY FOLDER.
NOTE: Please note that this sorting is a NON-DISTURBING sort method. For example: You could sort by SIZE and then the FILES LIST would be sorted by file size. THEN, you could sort by TYPE and then all the BMPs would be together and all the JPGs would be together etc... At this point you might say "So What?". The purpose of a NON DISTURBING sort routine is this. NOT only will all the BMPs be together, but if you took a closer look you will see that within the BMPs, they are STILL sorted by SIZE. This is because the last sort you did was by size :) This is very handy and a lot of programs that do sorting don't do this for you.
HINT: If you sort by the SAME column header as the last time
you sorted, then the list will be sorted by the column, BUT IN REVERSE
ORDER. So, if you sorted by Filename twice in a row, you will notice that
all the "Z"s are at the top and all the "A"s are at the bottom.
This allows you to SORT the FILES LIST by the TAGS status. IE.: All tagged files will be grouped together. So, if you had tagged several files throughout the list and they are all spread out all over the place AND you want to SEE all the tagged files together, then use this option.
This allows you to SORT the FILES LIST alphabetically by the file's FILENAME column.
This allows you to SORT the FILES LIST alphabetically by the file's FOLDER column. This is the directory in which the file is currently stored.
This allows you to SORT the FILES LIST numerically by the file's SIZE column. This is the amount of disk space taken up by the file.
This allows you to SORT the FILES LIST by the file's DATE column. This is the date that the file was created or last modified, at the time the file was put into the FILES LIST.
This allows you to SORT the FILES LIST by the file's COLORS column. This is the color format of the file. It can be usually any of the following. 2, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 16M. The 16M means 16 million colors and is in 24 BIT format.
NOTE: 24Bit is commonly referred to as TRUE-COLOR files. And 256 color files are commonly referred to as 8bit files.
This allows you to SORT the FILES LIST by the file's DIMENSION column. This is the dimension of the file. It basically shows you the WIDTH & HEIGHT of the file.
This allows you to SORT the FILES LIST by the file's TYPE column. This is the type of file. It usually contains the files' extension. If it's a FLC then it will show that it is an FLI type, because FLI & FLC are the SAME format. Also, if it is a JPG, JPEG, JPE file then it will just show JPG.
This allows you to SORT the FILES LIST by the file's MOVIE column. This indicates if the file can be played as a video clip. So, AVI, FLI, FLC would all show "YES" in this column.
NOTE: ANIMATED GIF files would also show "YES".
This allows you to SORT the FILES LIST by the file's DB FIELD column. By default when files are added to the FILES LIST, if it has an entry in the Notes DataBase then the "NOTES" field from the DataBase will be put into this field. Otherwise it is left blank.
NOTE: You can change what field from the DataBase is used to get loaded into the column. To see how, click here.
From this PREVIEWS menu option, you can control how the LARGE PREVIEW windows work. There are a few main functions that can also be controlled by function keys. The main TurboView window and the Files List Window both have the "PREVIEWS" menu option. Click here for Previews details.
From this OPTIONS menu option, you can control all the special option
settings in TurboView
This brings up the HELP file pages from your local hard drive. This is the most commonly used method of getting help.
This brings up the TurboView's README.TXT file into Notepad. So you can see the history of changes.
This brings up the TurboView Order Form screen. You can enter all the info needed to register the program and then you select if you want to print the order form so you may mail it into us, or you can select to EMAIL the order info to us. Once you have completed the registration instructions and we recieve payment, then we will email you back with a registration key file. This allows you to use TurboView with full features and no nag screens.
This brings up the HELP file pages from the INTERNET. Although you may never need to use this option, the WEB based HELP files will be the most current and UP-TO-DATE.
This brings up the TurboView's ABOUT box. This tells you the version of the program and the date it was created<compiled>.
