Top seeds the People's Republic of China and Brazil lead the list of qualifiers for the women's volleyball quarterfinals beginning on Tuesday (30 July) at the Omni Coliseum.
China and Brazil both completed pool play with perfect 5-0 marks. China was the pool A champion, while Brazil captured the number one seed in pool B.
China will open medal round play against Germany who qualified as the fourth seed in pool B with a 2-3 record at 12:00. Brazil faces Korea, who finished fourth in pool A with a 2-3 record, in its opening round match at 22:00.
The United States finished as the number two seed in pool A with a 4-1 record, but must face defending Olympic Games champion Cuba at 19:30. Cuba, which also captured the 1995 World Cup Title, struggled to a 3-2 pool play record but were the prohibitive favorites entering the tournament.
The Russian Federation finished second in pool B with a 4-1 record, which included an upset of Cuba on the final day of pool play. Russia will face the Netherlands, the third seed in pool A, at 14:30. The Netherlands finished 3-2 in the competition.
The four winners will advance to the semifinals to determine the medal winners, while the four losers of the quarterfinal matches will meet to determine places five through eight.
