XIONG of China Takes Slim Lead Into Finals

The final 12 competitors for the finals in the men's 3m springboard competition have been decided. XIONG Ni (CHN) will take a slim 1.71 point lead over Mark LENZI (USA) and Dmitri SAOUTINE (RUS) into Monday night's final. LENZI is the defending Olympic champion in the event. Scott DONIE (USA) sits in the fourth position with 223.86 points while YU Zhuocheng (CHN) is a close sixth at 223.41. If XIONG wins the gold medal Monday, it will be the Peoples Republic of China's first gold medal in the 3m springboard competition in Olympic history.

The finalists will take the scores they accumulated during the semifinal round and add them to their final round dives to determine the final diving standings. With the divers entering the final, only 1.71 points separates the top five positions.
