Cuba Advances to Semifinals
Cuba advanced to the women's volleyball semifinal round with a 15-1, 15-10, 15-12 victory over the United States in quarterfinal action on Tuesday in the Omni Coliseum.
Cuba used a smothering blocking effort in posting the sweep of the United States. Cuba established the tempo for the match early as it blocked seven balls in its 15-1 thumping of the USA in the first set. Cuba finished the match with 20 blocks compared to seven for the United States.
Cuba advances to the semifinals where it will meet Brazil, which defeated Korea in the other quarterfinal match. The United States now falls into the classification round to determine places five through eight.
Magalys CARVAJAL was brilliant for Cuba, posting one of the finest all-around matches in the tournament. She had 16 kills, 9 blocks and 1 service ace. The United States was led by Tara CROSS-BATTLE who recorded 11 kills and 2 blocks.
Final Score: CUB def. USA 15-1, 15-10, 15-12.
"We played with good technique especially with our service," said Cuba head coach Eugeno GEORGE. "I think we played a good match and deserved the victory."
BRA vs. KOR
Brazil Moves into Semifinal Match
Brazil advanced to a semifinal meeting with Cuba by beating Korea 15-4, 15-2, 15-10 in a quarterfinal match on Tuesday in the Omni Coliseum.
The Brazil-Cuba match is a rematch of their earlier pool play contest when Brazil swept Cuba 15-11, 15-10, 15-4 in the Omni Coliseum.
Korea, which will now face the United States in a classification contest, proved to be no match for the powerful Brazilians. Brazil controlled the contest from the opening set with Korea providing a challenge in only the third set.
Final Score: BRA def. KOR 15-4, 15-2, 15-10.
CHN vs. GER
China Remains Unbeaten
The People's Republic of China advanced to the semifinals with a 15-12, 15-8, 15-8 victory over Germany in quarterfinal action on Tuesday in the Omni Coliseum.
China, which entered the quarterfinals as the top-seeded team, will now face the winner of the Netherlands-Russian Federation match in the semifinals.
China has been the surprise team thus far not dropping a match after entering the competition.
SUN Yue paced China with 18 kills, 2 blocks and 1 service ace. LAI Yawen contributed 14 kills and 4 blocks. Germany was paced by Nancy CELIS who had 15 kills and 1 block. Germany, will now drop into the classification matches which will determine places five through eight.
Final Score: CHN def. GER 15-12, 15-8, 15-8.
"This was a quarterfinal match for us and we had prepared very well," said China head coach LANG Ping. "We will carry on the spirit of fighting and we will not be afraid of strong opponents."
RUS vs. NED
Russian Federation Rallies for Victory
The Russian Federation kept its medal hopes alive by rallying past the Netherlands 10-15, 15-7, 15-9, 15-10 in quarterfinal action on Tuesday in the Omni Coliseum.
Russia was baffled early on as the quicker Dutch moved the ball quickly and scored consistently by beating the big Russian block. In the last three sets, Russia adjusted its blocking scheme and began to dominate the Netherlands at the net.
Evguenia ARTAMONOVA, who collapsed from exhaustion after the conclusion of the match, finished with a match-high 29 kills. Russia also received 25 kills from Elena GODINA. The Netherlands was led by Erna BRINKMAN who had 16 kills and 1 service ace.
Russia now advances to the semifinals where it will meet the People's Republic of China, while the Netherlands will meet Germany in a classification match.
Final Score: RUS def. NED 10-15, 15-7, 15-9, 15-10.
"As far as tension goes, today was much more tense," said Russia head coach Nikolai KARPOL. "The pressure was far greater today. Eventually we managed to put an attack together. We blocked and hit better in the last sets. We felt fatigue at the end because the American climate requires a lot of energy to play."
