Olympic Equestrian-Three Day Event Recaps: 26 July (Day 7)

Equestrian Individual Three Day Event/Final Results

Kiwis Jump Clear, Finish 1-2

Blyth TAIT and Ready Teddy of New Zealand turned in a double-clear round in Friday's stadium jumping phase to retain first place and capture the individual three day event gold medal. Fellow Kiwi Sally CLARK and Squirrel Hill had put the pressure on TAIT moments before he entered the ring when CLARK turned in a double-clear round, leaving a 3.6-point margin between gold and silver. Bronze medalist Kerry MILLIKIN and Out and About of the United States had dropped a rail for a 5-point deduction, but was able to hold onto third place ahead of Jean TEULERE and Rodosto of France with a three day total of 73.70 points.

Final Results (penalty points): Gold - Blyth TAIT/Ready Teddy, New Zealand, 56.8; Silver - Sally CLARK/Squirrel Hill, New Zealand, 60.40; Bronze - Kerry MILLIKIN/Out and About, United States, 73.70.

"When I heard the 'klunk' (of Ready Teddy hitting fence 10), my heart made the same noise," said Blyth TAIT of New Zealand. "I did exactly what you aren't supposed to do and looked back and (the rail) was still there." NOTE: Had the rail fallen, TAIT would have dropped to second.
