Defending Gold Medalist ROSSET Falls
Eighth-seeded Marc ROSSET of Switzerland, the defending singles gold medalist, was forced to retire from his third round match with No. 14-seed Renzo FURLAN (ITA). ROSSET trailed 6-0, 4-2 before defaulting the match because of dizziness. Also falling was No. 3-seed Thomas ENQVIST (SWE) who lost a 7-5, 7-6 battle with India's Leander PAES. Top-seeded Andre AGASSI (USA) advanced to the quarterfinals, where he'll face No. 5-seed Wayne FERREIRA (RSA), also a winner on Saturday.

Top Eight Seeds Advance to Quarterfinals
Saturday marked the first seeded matchups in Olympic women's singles play, with the top eight seeds advancing to the quarterfinals. No. 1-seed Monica SELES (USA) dispatched No. 13 Gabriela SABATINI (ARG), 6-3, 6-3, and has yet to lose a set in the championship. Also advancing in straight sets were No. 3-seeded Aranxta SANCHEZ VICARIO (ESP), No. 6 Jana NOVOTNA (CZE), and No. 8 Kimiko DATE (JPN), a winner over 10th-seeded Magdalena MALEEVA (BUL).
Men's Doubles/Second Round
Eighth-seeded Zimbabwe Team Falls
The No. 8 team of Zimbabwe's Byron and Wayne BLACK were the only men's pair upset Saturday in the second round of Olympic doubles competition. The two fell to unseeded Marc-Kevin GOELLNER and David PRINOSIL of Germany, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6). The German team will face Croatia's Goran IVANISEVIC and Sasa HIRSZON in the quarterfinal round. IVANISEVIC and HIRSZON were 7-6 (4), 6-3 winners Saturday over Mark Knowles and Roger SMITH of the Bahamas.
Women's Doubles/Second Round
Top-seeded FERNANDEZ Pair Advances
Making their first Olympic doubles appearance Saturday were top-seeded
Gigi and Mary Joe FERNANDEZ (USA), who rolled over France's Mary
PIERCE and Nathalie TAUZIAT, 6-4, 6-3. The No. 4 team of Aranxta
SANCHEZ VICARIO and Conchita MARTINEZ (ESP) were also easy winners,
defeating Croatia's Iva MAJOLI and Maja MURIC, 6-2, 6-1. The upset
of the day came on Court 7, where the No. 7-seeded team of Amanda
COETZER and Mariaan DE SWARDT (RSA) fell to Valda LAKE and Clare
WOOD of Great Britain, 7-5, 7-5.
