GER vs. USA

Germany Clinches Semifinal Berth With 3-0 Victory Over Americans

On the strength of three first-half goals, Germany claimed a spot in the men's hockey semifinals with a 3-0 win over the United States on Sunday. Carlton FISCHER scored the first two German goals on penalty corner plays in the 11th and 22nd minutes, and Christian BLUNCK added the final tally. Germany has clinched second place in Pool A with a 3-1-1 mark, while the United States finished pool play at 0-5.

Final Score: GER 3, USA 0

"We wanted to be the spoilers today," said Ben MARQUIN of the United States. "We had an air of confidence today we haven't had."

ESP vs. IND

India Offense Finally Awakens, Shocks Spain 3-1

India's offense, which had scored just five goals in its previous four games, burst out of its slump, scoring three times to shock previously undefeated Spain 3-1 in men's hockey on Sunday. Prior to Sunday, the Spanish defense had allowed just two goals in four games. Gavin FERREIRA scored twice and Sabu VARKEY added a goal to account for India's scoring, while Xavier ESCUDE scored the lone goal for Spain.

ESP vs. NED

4-2 Win Moves Dutch Into Second-Place Tie

The Netherlands used two first-half goals from Wietske de RUITER and a goal each from Carole THATE and Myntje DONNERS to record a 4-2 win over Spain in the next-to-last preliminary match for both squads. Spain received goals from Luci LOPEZ and Sonia BARRIO in the defeat. With the win, the Netherlands moved into a second-place tie (with Korea) going into its preliminary showdown with first-place Australia on Tuesday night.

Final Score: NED 4, ESP 2.

ARG vs. KOR

Draw With Argentina Helps Koreans Stay In Second-Place Tie

CHANG Eun-Jung of Korea scored the only goal of the second half to help her squad tie Argentina, 2-2. Her penalty corner shot erased Argentina's 2-1 halftime lead, and gave Korea, now 3-1-2, a share of second place in the standings heading into its final preliminary game on Tuesday against Germany. Argentina, now 2-3-1, received goals from Sofia MACKENZIE and Maria Paula CASTELLI, both on penalty corner plays.

Final Score: ARG 2, KOR 2.


Men's Hockey/Pool A, Match 13

PAK vs. ARG

Pakistan Scores Six Straight Goals, Puts Away Argentina 7-2

Rodolfo PEREZ put Argentina ahead 1-0, then Pakistan exploded for six straight goals en route to a 7-2 triumph. Pakistan's Ahmed SHAHBAZ contributed three goals while Muhammad SARWAR chipped in a pair of goals. Pakistan now stands at 2-2-1 with five points, while Argentina falls to 2-3 and four points. Both teams have been eliminated from medal contention.

Final Score: PAK 7, ARG 2.

"We need to have more patience," said Argentina captain Alejandro DOHERTY. "We played well in the beginning and then we fell apart."


Women's Hockey/Match 21

GER vs. GBR

Britain's Second-Half Rally Dooms Germans, 3-2

Jill ATKINS scored two goals in the second half, including the game-winner with just 1:23 remaining in the match, to rally Great Britain past Germany 3-2 in Sunday's opening women's hockey game. Jane SIXSMITH scored on a field goal with 9:37 left to tie the match, erasing Germany's 2-0 halftime lead. The victory pushed Great Britain, at 2-2-2 and six points, past Germany, now 2-3-1 and five points, in the standings heading into Tuesday's final preliminary matches.

Final Score: GBR 3, GER 2.


Women's Hockey / Match #22

USA vs. AUS

Australian Women Rock United States 4-0

Australia used a rapid-fire offense and a suffocating defense to record a 4-0 women's hockey victory over the United States on Sunday. Four different players scored a goal in the first half for the Aussies, now 5-0-1 in the Olympic Games and the top seed heading into medal play. Australia had 18 shots in the game, while the Americans managed just one. The United States is now 1-3-2.

Final Score: AUS 4, USA 0.
