Women's Archery Ranking Round
HERASYMENKO Tops the Bracket as Archery Competition Opens
Lina HERASYMENKO of the Ukraine won the first-ever Olympic Games ranking round women's archery competition, scoring 673 out of a possible 720 points. HE Ying (CHN) scored 669 to stand in second place, two points ahead of Natalia NAZARIDZE (TUR) at 667. Today's 72-arrow ranking round established the positions of the archers in the tournament's elimination brackets. Competition in the bracket begins tomorrow, 29 July, at 9:00.
Strongest as a team were the South Koreans, who tied the world record for a team in the ranking round with 1,984 points. HERASYMENKO's individual mark and the team total by the South Koreans set Olympic Games records because ranking rounds have not been previously contested.

"It was a surprise for me to finish first," said HERASYMENKO. "But I knew I would be one of the first ten people. My form was excellent and I didn't have any problems today."
Korea, Italy Dominate Men's Ranking Round
Michele FRANGILLI of Italy took a narrow victory in the men's archery ranking round competition, scoring 684 of a possible 700 and finishing ahead of two archers from Korea, JANG Yong-Ho at 682 and OH Kyo-Moon at 681. This is the first Olympic Games in which the ranking round format has been used; the round establishes the elimination bracket. The elimination competition begins tomorrow, 29 July, at 9:00.
In the team competition, the efforts of JANG and OH, along with 11th-place finisher KIM Bo-Ram at 668 points, put the favored Korean team in first place at 2031. Italy finished the ranking round in second with 2000 points.

"I was a little surprised," said FRANGILLI. "When I shoot I am more concerned about my technique than I am watching the scoreboard. My goal when I came here was to finish in the first 15, but of course it is not bad finishing first."
