Men's Tennis Singles/Second Round

Five Men's Seeds Fall in Second Round

Fourth-seeded American Malvai WASHINGTON advanced to the third round of Olympic singles play, defeating Oleg OGORODOV (UZB), 6-3, 6-4 Friday at Stone Mountain Tennis Center. WASHINGTON is now the only seeded player left in the bottom half of the draw, as No. 6 Alberto COSTA (ESP), No. 7 Arnaud BOETSCH (FRA), No. 10 Jason STOLTENBERG (AUS), No. 13 Magnus GUSTAFSSON (SWE) and No. 16 Daniel VACEK (CZE) all lost their second round matches. STOLTENBERG's teammate, Australian Mark PHILIPPOUSSIS, continues to push his way through the draw, defeating Wayne BLACK (ZIM), 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the round of 16. The 20-year-old PHILIPPOUSSIS is a potential semifinal opponent for WASHINGTON after upsetting 12th-seeded Paul HAARHUIS (NED) on Wednesday.


Women's Tennis Singles/Second Round

Pierce, Coetzer Lose; No. 2 Martinez Advances

Two more women's seeds fell in Olympic tennis play Friday, as 12th-seeded Mary PIERCE (FRA) and No. 14 seed Amanda COETZER (RSA) both dropped their second-round singles matches to unseeded opponents. PIERCE, the 1995 Australian Open singles champion, fell in three sets to Ines GORRECHATEGUI of Argentina, as did COETZER to Belarus' Natasha ZVEREVA. Second-seeded Conchita MARTINEZ (ESP) rolled into the round of 16 with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Radka ZRUBAKOVA (SVK). In other news, Tournament Referee Ken FARRAR announced a change in this weekend's women's singles schedule. The eight third round matches originally scheduled for Saturday, 27 July will be reduced to four, with the remaining four matches to be completed on Sunday, 28 July.

Men's Tennis Doubles/First Round

No. 1-Seeded "Woodies" Advance

Top-seeded doubles team Todd WOODBRIDGE and Mark WOODFORDE (AUS) survived a three-set scare Friday, advancing to the second round with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win over Arnaud BOETSCH and Guillaume RAOUX (FRA). Grant CONNELL and Daniel NESTOR (CAN), the No. 2-seeded team, also advanced, defeating Ireland's Scott BARRON and Owen CASEY in straight sets. The hastily-assembled American team of Andre AGASSI and Malvai WASHINGTON took three sets to defeat Mexico's Alejandro HERNANDEZ and Oscar ORTIZ, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. AGASSI was a last-minute replacement for teammate Richey RENEBERG (USA), who withdrew from the competition Thursday with an injury.

Two Seeds Out First Round

It was a day of upsets in the women's doubles draw, as two of the top eight seeded teams fell in the first round of play. The No. 6 pair of Gabriela SABATINI and Patricia TARABINI (ARG) lost a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 battle with France's Sabine APPELMANS and Laurence COURTOIS, while eighth-seeded Ai SUGIYAMA and Kyoko NAGATSUKA of Japan dropped a 7-6, 6-1 decision to Canada'a Jill HETHERINGTON and Patricia HY-BOULAIS. The No. 1-seeded American team of Mary Joe and Gigi FERNANDEZ received a first round bye.
