LI Wrests the Gold from NEMOV in Head-to-Head Battle:
The men's individual all-around gymnastics championship came down to the final rotation at the Georgia Dome. Competing on the floor exercise, Alexei NEMOV (RUS) led rival LI Xiaoshuang (CHN), by just .038. LI's final event was the high bar. In the drama that has become the trademark of gymnastics competition at these Olympic Games, the two began their routines at precisely the same moment.
LI finished a near-flawless routine with a perfect landing to score a 9.787. Moments later, NEMOV took a tiny hop with both feet on his final tumbling pass, finishing with a score of 9.700. As a result, LI took the gold, .049 ahead of NEMOV. LI made his case for the gold medal on the vault, where he scored a 9.812, the highest mark awarded this afternoon. The final scoring total for LI was 58.423. NEMOV scored 58.374.
Vitaly SCHERBO (BLR) took the bronze medal, with a score of 58.197.
