Germans Win Team Jumping Gold
Despite the fact that Germany's first rider of the day, Franke SLOOTHAAK on Joly, retired on course after a fall from his horse resulted in a cut vein on his right wrist, the German show jumping team walked away with the gold medal on Thursday. The team total after two rounds was a score of just 1.75 faults, a mere seven seconds worth of time penalties. The United States became the only country to win medals in each of the three disciplines when the team turned in a silver medal performance of 12 faults, while Brazil earned their first equestrian medal, a bronze, on a team score of 17.25 faults.
Lars NEIBERG/For Pleasure, Franke SLOOTHAAK/Joly, Ulrich KIRCHHOFF/Jus de Pommes and 1992 individual jumping gold medalist Ludger BEERBAUM on Ratina competed for Germany. The United States was represented by Anne KURSINSKI/Eros, Leslie BURR-HOWARD/Extreme, Peter LEONE/Legato and Michael MATZ/Rhum, while Brazil's Alvaro MIRANDA NETO/Aspen, Andre JOHANNPETER/Calei, Luiz Felipe AZEVEDO/Cassiana and Rodrigo PESSOA/Tomboy captured the bronze.
Final Results: GER, 1.75; USA, 12.00; BRA, 17.25.
"I knew when (Ulrich KIRCHHOFF) went clear, I could have a fence down," said Ludger BEERBAUM, the last to go for Germany. "After (U.S. rider Michael) MATZ had a rail, there was less pressure."
