Men's Sprint/Quarterfinals and Semifinals
Excellent Cyclists Highlight Exciting Competition
Sprint competition continued today with the sprint quarterfinals, in which the top cyclists rode with precision to knock out their top competition. Semifinal results yielded Marty NOTHSTEIN (USA) at the top of the race for the gold. NOTHSTEIN clocked in times of 10.950 and 10.650 in best two of three competition against Darryn HILL (AUS) in the quarterfinals. NOTHSTEIN was followed by Curt HARNETT (CAN). The two will be joined by German favorite Jens FIELDER and Australian Gary NEIWAND in the finals. Finals will be held Sunday, weather permitting, at Stone Mountain Velodrome.
Italy a Sure Bet for the Gold
As expected, world and Olympic record holder Antonella BELLUTTI (ITA) topped the individual pursuit competition, clocking a time of 50.312. She will face Marion CLIGNET (FRA) Sunday, for the gold medal. Judith ARNDT (GER) will battle Yvonne MCGREGOR (GBR) for the bronze medal.
Winners: BELLUTTI (ITA), 50.312; CLIGNET (FRA).
Viva La France!
France's Felicia BALLANGER rode to a gold medal today in the women's sprint competition. Australia's 19-year-old sensation, Michelle FERRIS, earned the silver medal. The 1991 world sprint champion, Ingrid HARINGA (NED) and the 1992 silver medalist, Annett NEUMANN (GER) competed against each other in the bronze medal race with HARINGA triumphant to win the bronze.
Winners: BALLANGER, 11.903; HARINGA, 11.782.
France Captures Gold
France wins the gold in the team pursuit competition while the Russian Federation receives the silver and Australia captures the bronze. Earlier Saturday, the quarterfinal results yielded the Ukraine team over the Russian team, the Australian team triumphed against the U.S. team, the Italian team over the Spain's team while the French team rode to a swift victory over New Zealand.
