SEREBRYANSKAYA Runs Away with Individual Title
Ekaterina SEREBRYANSKAYA of the Ukraine earned the highest score awarded in each of the four rhythmic gymnastics events, totaling 39.683 points to easily win the gold medal in the individual all-around competition Sunday at the University of Georgia Coliseum.
After SEREBRYANSKAYA scored 9.950 on the first three events, rope, ball and clubs, it became apparent that the competition here was for second place. Ianina BATYRCHINA of the Russian Federation overcame a drop in the final event, the ribbon, to score 39.382 and take the silver medal. Her total was a mere .052 ahead of bronze medalist Elena VITRICHENKO if the Ukraine at 39.331. BATYRCHINA was able to win the silver with personality-driven performances of 9.916 with the ball and 9.933 with the clubs.

"This is not just any competition," said gold medal winner Ekaterina SEREBRYANSKAYA (UKR). "This competition goes on under the eyes of the gods from the moment the torch is lit. This is the grand finale of four years of hard work. For three days we have had great psychological physical pressure. We are not machines. We are children who want to be rhythmic gymnasts."
