This year's table tennis competition has the makings of an historic event as past Olympians, current world champions and many young, rising stars vie for the gold medal.
The Olympic table tennis competition will include men's and women's singles and men's and women's doubles. Participants will include 1992 Olympic men's singles gold medalist Jan-Ove WALDNER (SWE), known for his shot making and inventive all-around game; KONG Lingui (CHN), 1995 men's singles world champion; and NAM Kyu Yoo (KOR), the 1988 Olympic men's singles gold medal winner. Also watch for three-time national champion Jim BUTLER (USA), WANG Tao (CHN), 1992 Olympic men's doubles gold medalist; and TAEK Soo Kim (KOR), 1988 Olympic silver medalist in men's singles.
Competitors in the women's singles will include DENG Yaping (CHN), 1992 Olympic women's singles and doubles gold medalist and 1995 world women's singles and doubles champion; QIAO Hung (CHN) 1992 Olympic singles silver medalist and gold medalist in doubles; and Marie SVENSSON (SWE), 1994 European singles champion.
Action begins 23 July in the Georgia World Congress Center with men's and women's doubles competition.
