Olympic Volleyball Recaps: 3 August (Day 15)

Women's Volleyball Bronze Medal/Match 41

BRA vs. RUS

Brazil Captures First Medal; Ends Russian Streak

Brazil captured its first-ever medal in women's volleyball competition with a 15-13, 4-15, 16-14, 8-15, 15-13 victory over the Russian Federation in the bronze medal match on Saturday in the Omni Coliseum.

Despite being regarded as one of the best teams in the world for the past eight years, Brazil's best Olympic Games finish prior to Saturday was fourth-place in 1992. The medal caps an accension to world power that began in 1980 when the Brazilians finished seventh in their first Olympic Games competition.

The loss by Russia ends the longest, and most remarkable streak in women's volleyball history. This marks the first time that Russia, excluding its boycott in 1984, has not placed first or second in an Olympic Games dating back to the first competition in 1964. Entering the Atlanta Games, Russia had captured gold on four occasions and silver three times.

The game featured many dramatic turns as Brazil won each of its sets by a total of two points, while Russia averaged a 9-point victory in the two sets that it won.

Ana MOSER led the Brazilians with 21 kills and 3 blocks, while Ericlela BODZIAK finished with 14 kills and 2 service aces. Russia was led by Elena GODINA who had 20 kills and Elizaveta TICHTCHENKO had 17 kills, 8 blocks and 2 service aces.

Final Score: BRA def. RUS 15-13, 4-15, 16-14, 8-15, 15-13.

"I think this is the best team we've ever had," said Brazilian attacker Ana ALVARES. "It's hard to compare because it's different times. Today it's more professional, a lot of emphasis on practice and working hard."
