PALIANI, NDOU, and Others Advance:
The boxers that advanced on to the second round of the featherweight class were Russia's Ramaz PALIANI, Republic of South Africa's Phillip NDOU, Thailand's Kamsing SOMLUCK, Nigeria's Daniel ATTAH, Hungary's Janos NAGY, Argentina's Pablo CHACON, Mauritius' Josian LEBON, and Germany's Falk HUSTE.
NDOU (RSA): "It is a pleasure for me (to fight under the South African flag) because I am representing my country. Lord help me win my next fight."
THOMPSON/MAGEE Bout Highlights Round 1:
The boxers that will advance into the second round in the 75kg
weight class include Hungary's Juan Pablo LOPEZ, Japan's Hirokuni
MOTO, Georgia's Akaki KAKAURIDZE, Algeria's Mohamed BAHARI, Cameroon's
Bertrand TETSIA and Brazil's Ricardo RODRIGUEZ.
The bronze medalist at the 1995 World Championships
Japan's Hirokuni MOTO was defeated by China's Tao CHEN by a score
of 15-10. By far the best bout of the afternoon was between Canada's
Randall THOMPSON and Ireland's Brian MAGEE. Although MAGEE led
throughout the bout, THOMPSON put up a tremendous effort and the
crowd definately showed it with standing ovations after each round.
MAGEE: "The crowd gave me a boost, especially in the last round."
THOMPSON: "I think that we stunned each other
once. I just couldn't get out of the way in time. I like fights
like that. It just didn't go my way."
The featherweight class continued tonight as there were seven more boxers that advanced onto the second round. The best fight of the night was between Kazakstan's Bakhtiyar TILEGANOV and USA's Floyd MAYWEATHER. MAYWEATHER came into the ring a little anxious but said that the crowd hyped him up. He led 6-1 in the first round. The bout was stopped in the second round because TILEGANOV had a bloody nose.
"I am in the Olympics," said MAYWEATHER. "I have achieved a goal by just a short term goal. I truly believe that with the help of God, my coaches, and my father I can win a gold."
The boxers that advanced on to the second round include USA's Roshii WELLS, Uzbekistan's Dilshood YARBEKOV, who was the bronze medalist at the 1995 World Championships, Czech Republic's Ludovik PLACHETKA, Cuba's Ariel HERNANDEZ, who was 1992 gold medalist, Germany's Sven OTTKE, who is the reigning European champion, Russain boxer Alexander LEBZIAK and Australia's Justann CRAWFORD.
