Cuba Improves to 4-0 with Victory over Korea

Cuba continued its Olympic baseball offensive display to outlast Korea,14-11. Trailing by 8 runs entering the ninth, Korea rallied for 5 runs and brought the tying run to the plate before the final out was recorded as Cuba prevailed. The win improved the Cuban squad to 4-0, while Korea dropped to 0-4.

The 20-hit attack by Cuba produced runs in six different innings, including a 4-run fourth and pair of 3-run stanzas to hand Korea its fourth loss in as many games in the round-robin tournament. Center fielder Jose ESTRADA's 3-run home run in the fourth was the big blow that all but ended Korea's chances of advancing to the medal round. Cuba added 3 runs in the sixth for a7-run advantage and catcher Juan MANRIQUE provided extra insurance with a 2-run homer in the top of the seventh.

Starter Osmany ROMERO held the Korean attack in check through the first 5 innings, but tired as Korea rallied in its half of the sixth. Trailing 9-2, Korea produced a 3-run inning to pull within four. But, Korea, which had 17 hits during the 4-hour affair, failed to give up, scoring one in the seventh and five in the ninth inning off the Cuban bullpen. But, the late inning heroics were ended with the game-tying run at te plate as reliever Jorge FUMERO recorded the third and final out, leaving two runners stranded. Final Score: Cuba 14, Korea 11

USA vs. ITA

Big Innings Help USA over Italy :

The USA batted around in both the first and third innings en route to a 15-3 victory over Italy. The game ended after the seventh due to the international run-difference rule. The USA improved to 3-0, while Italy dropped to 1-2.

On the strength of a sixth-run first and a five-run third, the USA cruised to the win. After Italy rebounded in the bottom of the first inning with its first five batters reaching safely to score its three runs, USA starter R.A. DICKEY settled down to hold the Italians scoreless over his next four innings. He finished with a line that included three runs on six hits over five innings to go with two walks and three strikeouts. Billy KOCH, who pitched the final two innings, combined with DICKEY to hold Italy hitless over the final five innings.

Mark KOTSAY was one of several offensive stars for the USA, accounting for seven runs. After Jason WILLIAMS led off the game with a home run to left field, KOTSAY, 3-for-4 with a double and two home runs, followed WILLIAMS with a homer to right. Brian LOYD completed a three-homer first with a two-run shot that gave the USA a 6-0 lead. The USA squad also plated five runs in the third and two each in the fourth and sixth innings. Final Score: USA 15, ITA 3
