Olympic Stadium Features to be Added
During the 1996 Olympic Games, Olympic Stadium and the area through which spectators
approach will have a dramatically different look -- reflecting the completion of all work
on the facility, installation of The Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games (ACOG) "Look
of the Games" and changes in traffic routing to allow creation of pedestrian corridors:
- Olympic Cauldron -- rising 132 feet, the massive structure that will hold the Olympic
flame will stand just outside the north end of the stadium. A 190-foot bridge will
connect it to the stadium.
- Field of play -- ACOG torch logo painted in the center grass.
- Entry points -- decorative shade structures over magnetometers and access control
facilities for security.
- Astrovision screen -- an additional Astrovision screen will be installed on the east
side of the stadium for spectators in the north bowl of the facility.
- National flags -- the flags of each of the 197 nations participating in the Games
will stand atop the stadium canopy. Flags with the Olympic rings and flags with the ACOG
torch logo will line the top of the seating at the north end of the stadium.
- Tabled seating for media -- painted teal with graphic "Look of the Games" elements.
- Concourses and railings -- draped with Olympic banners and fabric coverings.
- Stadium exterior -- encircled with Olympic flags, swagging and multi-colored clusters
of banners and medallions.
- Between Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium and Olympic Stadium -- transformed into a huge
plaza with tented pavilions, 500-foot-long shade area, fabric-covered fencing,
stencil-painted graphics on the street surface and formal plantings in the shape of the
Olympic rings.
- Capitol Avenue and Fulton Street -- a 60-foot entry portal that serves as the gateway
to the two stadia. Capitol Avenue to Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard converted to a
pedestrian corridor lined with Olympic banners.
