Olympic Boxing Recaps: 28 July (Day 9)

Flyweight / 51 kg.

The boxers that qualified for the quarterfinals are from Russia Albert PAKEEV, from Colombia Daniel REYES, Maikro ROMERO from Cuba, and Elias RECAIDO from the Philippines.

PAKEEV (RUS): "(My strategy was) to go ahead s much as possible. You never what can happen, but I was striving for the best. I feel it will be harder next time."

REYES (COL): "I initiated my opponent to get him to fight and then I attacked and attacked."


Light Welterweight / 63.5 kg

The first bout Cuba's Hector VINENT , ranked number one in the world, and reigning world champion. His opponent has just as many bragging rights, ranked number four in the world and silver medalist at the World Championships, Nurhan SULEYMANOGLU from Turkey. VINENT, a Southpaw led off the bout with a left cross and only 25 seconds lapsed in the first round. He continued to dominate SULEYMANOGLU shutting him out in the first 8-0. In the second round SULEYMANOGLU managed to score his first point, VINENT, however, kept up his combinations for a 15-1 lead. VINENT'S left hook started the third round. Two right swings followed by a left hook and a right pushed VINENT at the end to leave SULEYMANOGLU scoreless in the third as well. The final score was 23-1.

Other boxers that advanced include Russia's Edward ZAHROV, from Kazakstan Bolat NIYAZYMBET, and from Ireland Babak MOGHIMI, who upset Gerry LEGRAS, ranked number five in the world.

SULEYMANOGLU: "He's a very strong fighter and he has a long reach. It's hard to score on him. But all that fighting for one point? I don't think that's fair."


Light Heavyweight / 81 kg.

Pan-American champion Antonio TARVER started out the light heavy's, and improved immensely from his last performance as he stopped his opponent, David KOWAHO (SLE) in the first round. TARVER was shutting his opponent out 8-0 when the referee stopped the contest.

The other boxers that advanced include Puerto Rico's Enrique FLORES, Canada's T.A. Ross, and from Kazakstan Vasilii JIROV.

TARVER (USA):"I wanted to come out and show people why I am a world champion."

FLORES (PUR):"I listened to my corner the entire fight. From there I invented my fighting."
