Qualifications
Teams qualify based on their finish at the IX Water Polo World Cup in September 1995, or at the Olympic Games Qualifying Tournament. The host country automatically qualified.

Competition Format
Pool play determines the eight quarterfinal teams, whose winners advance to medal rounds. Each game consists of four 7-minute periods.
Game Tie Score: Ties are allowed in pool play, but not in final round matches,
which must have a winner. In this case, a 5-minute overtime period is played.
Pool Play Tie: If teams are tied in the pool-play standings, the tie is broken by goal differential.
