Women's Volleyball Preliminaries / Pool B

RUS vs. CAN

Russian Federation Remains Undefeated:

The Russian Federation posted its second consecutive 3-0 sweep with a 15-1, 15-7, 15-9 victory over Canada on Monday at the University of Georgia in pool B play. Russia, which opened pool play with a 3-0 win over Germany, totally dominated Canada from start to finish. Irina ILCHENKO led the Russian attack with 20 kills and 2 blocks. Evguenia ARTAMONOVA added 17 kills and 3 blocks. Canada, which dropped to 0-2 in pool play, will now face an uphill battle to qualify for the medal round. The top four teams from each pool will advance to the medal round. Janis KELLY led Canada with 16 kills and 1 block. Final Score: RUS def. CAN 15-1, 15-7, 15-9.


GER vs. PER

Germany Sweeps Peru for First Victory:

Germany breezed to a 3-0 victory over Peru in women's volleyball pool B action at the University of Georgia on Monday. The victory marks the first of the competition for Germany after having lost to the Russian Federation 3-0 on Saturday, while Peru dropped to 0-2 in pool play already having lost to Brazil. Germany fell behind early in set one, but rallied to take control of the match and move on to a 15-11, 15-6, 15-3 win. Germany was led by Nancy CELIS who had 12 kills, 2 blocks and 1 service ace and Susanne LAHME added 11 kills, 3 blocks and 1 service ace. Peru was led by Milagros MOY ALVARADO who recorded a team-high 13 kills. Final Score: GER def. PER 15-11, 15-6, 15-3.

USA vs. NED

Cross-Battle Leads United States to Key Victory:

Tara CROSS-BATTLE recorded 25 kills and the United States rallied to post an important 12-15, 15-10, 17-15, 15-7 victory over the Netherlands. The victory improved the United States record to 2-0 in pool A play, while the Netherlands dropped to 1-1. After winning the first set, the Netherlands jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the United States rallied. After the Netherlands took a 9-8 lead the United States reeled off a 7-1 run to end the second set. The United States stormed out to a 13-6 lead in the third set only to see the Netherlands go on a 7-0 run to tie the game. The Netherlands took a 15-14 lead, but the United States fought off three set points and went on to the 17-15 win. The United States broke open a tight fourth set with a 6-0 run and went on to the 15-7 win. Final Score: USA def. NED 12-15, 15-10, 17-15, 15-7.

"We are the type of team that will bend but not break," said USA head coach Terry LISKEVYCH. "After the first set we served the ball tougher, Elaine YOUNGS stabilized the team."

BRA vs. CUB

Brazil Gains Upper Advantage in Pool B:

Brazil gained an early lead in the race for the top spot in pool B with a 15-11, 15-10, 15-4 victory over defending Olympic Games champion Cuba in women's volleyball action on Monday in the Omni Coliseum. Brazil used a superior blocking and defense effort to improve its record to 2-0, while Cuba dropped to 1-1 in pool play. Brazil used late runs in both sets one and two before dominating action in the third, and deciding, set. Final Score: BRA def. CUB 15-11, 15-10, 15-4.

"We've had a lot of trouble with Cuba in the past, but tonight was special because it's the Olympic Games," said Marcia CUNHA of Brazil. "We think that Cuba is the number one team to beat, so we practiced blocking, blocking, blocking and to never give up on a ball."

CHN vs. KOR

People's Republic of China Improves To 2-0:

The People's Republic of China took a huge step toward qualifying for the round on Monday in women's volleyball pool A play at the Omni Coliseum. China held off a rally from Korea in posting a 17-16, 16-14, 2-15, 13-15, 15-13 victory. In a match that lasted almost three hours, China capitalized on its ability to win key points in improving to 2-0 in pool play. Korea, which earned the support of the crowd after surging back after dropping the first two sets, dropped to 1-1 in pool play. Final Score: CHN def. KOR 17-16, 16-14, 2-15, 13-15, 15-13.

"I think this was a tough match," said China's head coach LANG Ping. "I think in terms of spirit we won, but I think we were slow defensively."


Women's Volleyball Preliminaries/Pool A

JPN vs. UKR

Japan Notches First Win:

Japan recorded its first victory of the Olympic Games on Monday in women's volleyball pool A play at the Omni Coliseum. Japan swept Ukraine 15-9, 15-5, 15-4 to earn a much needed victory behind Motoko OBAYASHI, who led the team with 20 kills and 2 service aces. Ukraine, which will likely have to win two of its three remaining matches in order to qualify for pool play, was led by Olena SYDORENKO, who recorded 17 kills and 1 service ace. Final Score: JPN def. UKR 15-9, 15-5, 15-4.

KUNIAKI Yoshida (JPN) Head Coach: "At the world championships we were quite off, but we have played better here. The reason for victory was our serves and that both of our attackers were phenomenal."
