Australia's Freeman Fastest Qualifier for Semifinals
Cathy FREEMAN (AUS), known for her quick start, turned in the fastest time in Saturday's women's 400 meter quarterfinals. Freeman ran 50.43 on a wet Olympic track, towing Grit BREUER (GER) to the day's second fastest time of 50.57. Marie-Jose PEREC (FRA), the fastest in the world this year, also easily advanced, winning her heat in a relaxed 51.00. The United States, Jamaica, and Nigeria each qualified three runners for the semifinals.

Men's 800 Meter Runners Get Unanticipated Rest Day
The men's 800 meter heats were cancelled today due to the number of entries. The first round of the men's 800 meters will take place on Sunday.
Deal Top Qualifier on his Final Throw
Lance DEAL (USA) hit 78.56 meters on his third attempt and will be ranked number one for Sunday's hammer throw finals. DEAL, the United States record holder, moved past Igor ASTAPKOVICH (BLR), who was just 4 centimeters back. Notable non-qualifiers included Vadim KHERSONTSEV (RUS), who was 15th, and Karsten KOBS (GER), who was 18th.
