Mixed Doubles Quarterfinals
KIM and GIL Upset HERYANTO and TIMUR
Indonesia, considered one of the powers in international badminton, no longer has a mixed doubles team in Olympic competition. The country's top pair, second-seeded Trikus HERYANTO and Minarti TIMUR, was upset by fifth-seeded KIM Dong Moon and GIL Young Ah of Korea, 15-4, 15-13. Indonesia's other remaining team, Nimpele FLANDY and Rosalina RISEU, lost to China's fourth-seeded team of LIU Jianjun and SUN Man, 15-2, 5-15, 15-7.
While KIM and GIL dominated the first game of their match against HERYANTO and TIMUR, the Indonesians built a strong lead in the second game, up 10-5 at one point. Then, KIM and GIL smashed nine unanswered points. HERYANTO and TIMUR staved off match point and climbed within one point, but KIM and GIL put it away 15-13.
Top-seeded PARK Joo-Bong and RA Kyung Min of Korea defeated No. 7 TAO Xiaoqiang and WANG Xiaoyuan of China, 15-7, 15-9. In the second game, PARK and RA were up 14-5 and held off China's late run.
Third-seeded CHEN Xingdong and PENG Xingyong of China defeated Michael SOGAARD and Rikke OLSEN of Denmark in a hard-fought emotional match, 15-10, 6-15, 18-15. In the second game, CHEN and PENG got off to an early lead, 6-2, but let up on the pressure, allowing SOGAARD and OLSEN to win on 13 unanswered points.
In Tuesday's semifinals, PARK and RA will face LIU and SUN, while KIM and GIL will face CHEN and PENG.
Indonesia's MAINAKY and SUBAGJA Seeing Gold
Top-ranked Rexy MAINAKY and Ricky SUBAGJA of Indonesia are going into the gold medal match of the Olympic men's doubles badminton tournament.
Throughout the tournament, the Indonesian pair won all of its matches easily. MAINAKY and SUBAGJA received a bye in the first round, defeated Denmark's Michael SOGAARD and Henrik SVARRER 15-10, 15-7 in the second round, and thumped China's sixth-seeded and fourth-ranked HUANG Zhanzhong and JIANG Xin in a pair of 15-7 games in the quarterfinals.
The semifinal score was even more disparate. MAINAKY and SUBAGJA trounced SOO Beng Kiang and TAN Kim Her of Malaysia, 15-3, 15-5.
In Wednesday's gold medal match, MAINAKY and SUBAGJA will face the winner of Monday evening's semifinal match between Malaysia's CHEAH Soon Kit and YAP Kim Hock and fellow Indonesians ANTONIUS and Denny KANTONO, seeded second and third, respectively. SOO and TAN will face the loser in Tuesday's bronze medal match.
