Women's Doubles Preliminary, Round One
Few Surprises in Women's First Preliminary Round:
Although the preliminary round of the women's doubles competition got underway today with many exciting matches, there were few surprises. The Chinese team of DENG Yaping and QIAO Hong, 1992 Olympic gold medalists, received a bye to tomorrow's second preliminary round. Their teammates LIU Wei and QIAO Yunping easily advanced by defeating the Chilian team of Berta RODRIGUEZ OLATE and Sofija TEPES CANCINO, 2:0.
Germany, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, France, Hungary, the Russian Federation and Sweden all shut out their opponents in today's action. The Swedish duo Pernilla PETTERSON and Asa SVENSSON provided the most dramatic battle as they came back from a 13-19 deficit in the first game and a 7-14 margin in the second to win both.
"This first match is very important," said Swedish women's coach Ulf CARLSSON. "To play that well under pressure - sometimes we've not done that makes me quite pleased."
