Top Seeds Advance to Singles Third Round
Top-seeded Andre AGASSI (USA) advanced to the men's singles third round with a 6-4, 6-4 victory Thursday over Slovakia's Karol KUCERA. No. 3 seed Thomas ENQVIST (SWE) survived a close call, coming back from match point down to defeat unseeded Sargis SARGSIAN (ARM), 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4. ENQVIST's match took more than four hours to complete because of rain delays that also pushed back AGASSI's match until early evening. Defending gold medalist Marc ROSSET (SUI) survived a close match with Denmark's Frederik FETTERLEIN, advancing to the third round with a 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 victory.
No. 15 Seed Hingis Falls in Straight Sets
Fifteenth-seeded Martina HINGIS became the first upset casualty of the women's singles tournament Thursday, falling 6-4, 6-4 to Japan's Ai SUGIYAMA in the second round of Olympic tennis at Stone Mountain Park. The 15-year-old HINGIS is the reigning Wimbledon doubles champion and was a singles quarterfinalist at the Australian Open in January. Top-seeded Monica SELES (USA) defeated Patricia HY-BOULAIS (CAN), 6-3, 6-2, and faces 13th-seeded Gabriela SABATINI (ARG), a 6-4, 6-0 winner over Mexico's Angelica GAVALDON, in the third round.
Agassi Expected to Compete in Olympic Doubles
Top men's singles seed Andre AGASSI (USA) is expected represent the U.S. with teammate Malvai WASHINGTON (USA) Friday in the continuation of the first round of men's doubles play. AGASSI will fill in for an injured Richey RENEBERG (USA), who defaulted his first round singles match Wednesday with a hamstring injury. Croatia's Goran IVANISEVIC and partner Sasa HIRSZON upset the fourth-seeded Swedish team of Jonas BJORKMAN and Nicklas KULTI, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4), in their first round doubles match. IVANISEVIC, the No. 2 singles seed, was ousted in singles on Wednesday by Marcos ONDRUSKA (RSA).
No. 5 Australian Team Defaults
The fifth-seeded team of Nicole BRADTKE and Rennae STUBBS (AUS) was forced to default its first-round doubles match with China's CHEN Li and YI Jing-Qian, after STUBBS fell ill at the Athlete's Village. STUBBS's condition was described by The Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games (ACOG) medical services staff as not serious. Switzerland's Martina HINGIS and Patty SCHNYDER advanced to the second round after defeating Slovakia's Karina HABSUDOVA and Radka ZRUBAKOVA 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. HINGIS won the 1996 Wimbledon doubles title with Helena SUKOVA (CZE).
