Qualifications
Teams qualify by being one of the top seven countries at the 1995 World Championships, or by regional/continental zone. The United States automatically qualified as host country. Individuals qualify by being one of the three fencers on one of the eight teams already qualify by World Cup rankings, or by continental zone.
Competition Format
Individual competition is direct elimination (15-touch bouts). Team competition is direct elimination (relay format).
In the event of a tie, fencers bout for an additional minute with one fencer given priority by a random computer drawing. The first fencer who scores a touch wins. If still tied at the end of the minute, the fencer with the priority wins.

The French, Germans and Italians have mastered the sport and have dominated along with the Hungarians and Soviets. Aladar GEREVICH of Hungary won six gold medals in team sabre, and from 1924 to 1964, Hungary’s sabre teams won 46 consecutive matches and seven gold medals.
| The volunteer staff of the 1996 Olympic Games totaled 50,152. They worked an estimated 850,000 shifts. |
