Olympic Boxing Recaps: 26 July (Day 7)

Light Flyweight 48 kg.

Cuba's Olympic Games winning streak finally came to an abrupt halt Friday as Mansueto VELASCO from the Philippines defeated Yosvani AGUILERA, 14-5. VEALSCO built a 4-0 lead early in the first round, jabbing with his right hand and crossing with his left. AGUILERA did not score his first point until 11 seconds remained in the first round. In the second round, AGUILERA scored first but could not catch VELASCO who continued stack points on his lead, and take an 8-4 lead as the second round ended. VELASCO continued his domination in the third round, confusing AUILERA with his southpaw stance.

Other boxers advancing to the quarterfinal round include Hamid BERHILI (MAR), Rafael LOZANO (ESP) and Lamsara LAPAINI (INA).

BERHILI (MAR): "I knew I was too far ahead," said BERHILL. "I didn't want to get hit with a mistake that would knock me out of the medal rounds. I just wanted to rest for the next round."


Lightweight/60 kg.

In lightweight action, Hoeina SOLTANIA (ALG), ranked number nine in the world, defeated Agnaldo NUNEZ(BRA), 11-1 qhile defending world champion Leonard DOROFTEI from Romania continued on his journey toward a gold medal, with a win over Sergey KOPENKIN. Another Cuban boxer lost tonight as Koba GOGOLADZE of Georgia stunned Julio GONZALES VALLADARES with devastating lefts to the head in the first round, handing the Cuban a pair of standing eight counts en route to his victory. GOGLADZE led 4-1 after the first round and took a 9-3 advantage into the third round. GONZALEZ VALLADARES fought back and took the third round, 6-5 . It wasn't enough however as GOGLADZE won 14-9. Korean Soo-yung SHIN also advanced to the quarterfinals.

"Cuba has strong boxers. I was very glad to beat Cuba.," said GOGOLADZE. "I prepared for this fight and thought a lot about how to fight him. I was stronger and stronger in each round. He was a good boxer and a good opponent."


Middleweight/75 kg.

In the middleweight class USA's Roshii Wells concluded the day with a win to run the USA's Friday record to 3-0 on the day. The bronze medalist at the 1995 World Championships, Dilshood YARBEKOV from Uzbekistan defeated his opponent Ludovik PLACHETKA from Czechslovakia in the tiebreaker. The other winners included from defending world champion and Pan-American gold medalist Ariel Hernandez of Cuba and from Russian Alexander LEBZIAK.


Boxing Light Flyweight (48kg)/ Round 2

The second round of the light flyweight class began with the reigning world champion Daniel Petrov BOJILOV (BUL) defeating Nshan MUNCHYAN (ARM), 11-5. MUNCHYAN opened the scoring midway through the first round with a strong right, but BOJILOV scored the next 3 points to take a 3-1 led at the bell. BOJILOV started the second round scoring 2 points, but MUNCHYAN came back ending the second round, 6-3. MUNCHYAN came out rejuvenated in the third round and scored 2 points in the first 30 seconds to trim BOJILOV's lead to 6-5. BOJILOV then used his reach to his advantage and controlled the rest of the bout.

Other boxers that advanced include Thailand's Smorot KAMSING, from Ukraine Oleg KIRYUKHIN, and USA's Albert GUARDADO.

"I started to take control of the fight in the first round which gave me the needed confidence to win," said BOJILOV (BUL). "I felt that if I fought that way in all three rounds I would win."


Boxing Lightweight (60 kg)/ Round 2

Michael Strange (CAN) a bronze medalist at the 1995 Pan-American Games, and ranked number eight in the world, defeated Armenia's Mikhak GHAZARYAN in Friday's opening lightweight bout. GHAZARYAN opened the scoring in the first round with a straight right, but STRANGE rallied and took a 3-2 to end the first round. In the second round, the two boxers traded blows evenly before STRANGE took the edge at 8-6. In the third round, STRANGE moved skillfully around the ring as the blocked most of GHAZARYAN'S punches. STRANGE took the bout 16-7.

Other lightweights advancing to the quarterfinals include Oktavian TONTCHEV (BUL), Veongviact PHONGSIT (THA) and Terrance CAUTHEN (USA).

"My coaches and I decided to switch to a counter punch," said STRANGE (CAN). "I wasn't worried about being down a point after the first round because I had a great training camp. He was running out of gas and I was getting stronger. I'm in great shape."


Boxing Middleweight (75 kg) / Round 2

The silver medalist at the world championships, Tomasz BOROWSKI from Poland came back and defeated Hirokuni MOTO from Japan to continue his quest for the gold medal. MOTO ended the first bout leading 1-0. In round two was when BOROWSKI stunned MOTO with a quick right and then a left with under a minute remaining. MOTO recovered from the standing eight count, and the round finished with MOTO still leading 4-3. BOROWSKI used the momentum gained in round two to score the first six points of round three. His two-fisted attack and fancy combinations led to a 9-5 lead before MOTO was even able to score a point in the final 30 seconds of the bout. BOROWSKI won the bout 11-6.

Turkey's Malik BEYLEROGLU, Algeria's Mohamed BAHARI, and Ireland's Brian MAGEE also advanced.

"(Winning) is a very good feeling and being able to advance to the next round feels good," said BOROWSKI (POL). "I knew from the beginning that I was in control. I am very confident."
