Men's Modern Pentathlon
Previous Olympian Pentathletes Favored
For the first time in Olympic history, all five events (shooting, fencing, swimming, riding and running) of the men's modern pentathlon will take place on the same day - Tuesday,
30 July.
The participants with previous Olympic experience are expected to fare the best in this grueling test of strength and endurance. Christophe RUER of France, age 31, is competing in his third consecutive Olympic Games. Another Olympic veteran, Michael GOSTIGAN, will be representing the United States for the fourth time. GOSTIGAN's best finish was fourth in the 1992 Barcelona Games.
Per-Olov DANIELLSON of Sweden , Sebastien DELEIGNE of France and Vjacheslaus DUHANOUS of Lithuania all were competitors four years ago in Barcelona.
"Playing golf is one of the ways I prepare for the Games,'' GOSTIGAN said. "It takes the worries off my mind."
