Women's Diving 10m Platform/Preliminaries
"Air FU" Leads After First Round
Thirty-three diving competitors entered into Friday's first round of the women's 10m platform. The field was trimmed to 18 divers who will dive in the semifinals on Saturday morning. No surprise to anyone, FU Mingxia (CHN) whose nickname is "Air Fu," led after the first five dives with a total of 329.25 points. Becky RUEHL (USA) sits 5.34 points behind FU in second place with 323.91 points. In the third position is Irina VYGOUZOVA (KAZ), a huge surprise. VYGOUZOVA was not mentioned in any of the pre-dive hype as a medal contender. Three favorites Svetlana TIMOSHININA (RUS), Anne MONTMINY (CAN) and Vanessa BAKER, all failed to qualify. Mary Ellen CLARK (USA) the oldest diver in the competition and a bronze medalist in Barcelona sits in the 12th position with 253.89 points. Maria Jose ALCALA (MEX) is in 13th with 252.36. ALCALA is competing in her third Olympic Games.
In the semifinals, the divers will perform four voluntary dives from different groups with a maximum degree of difficulty of 7.6. The scores obtained in the preliminaries will be added to the scores of the semifinals. The top 12 divers will then move into the finals on Saturday evening.
