Women's Bronze Medal Game

NED vs. GBR

Dutch Register Shootout Victory Over Great Britain For Bronze Medal

After a scoreless tie in regulation, the Netherlands edged Great Britain 4-3 in a penalty stroke shootout to earn the women's hockey bronze medal, marking the first time since 1988 that a shootout had been needed in medal competition. British goalkeeper Joanne THOMPSON and her Dutch counterpart, Jacqueline TOXOPEUS, stopped numerous shots throughout the evening, and matched each other through the first four rounds of the shootout. On the fifth, Suzan van der WIELEN pushed her shot past THOMPSON. Kathryn JOHNSON's tying attempt was blocked by TOXOPEUS, giving the Dutch their third medal in the last four Olympic Games. Great Britain finishes the tournament with a 3-3-2 mark, while the Netherlands ends the Olympics at 4-2-2.

Final Score: NED 0, GBR 0 (NED 4, GBR 3 in shootout).

"It was a little bit tense. They were stronger up front," said Dutch team manager Sophie VON WEILER. "This (medal) is what we aimed for. The final game (Australia versus Korea) has the two teams who should be playing. They are the best two."

Women's Gold Medal Game

AUS vs. KOR

Aussies Capture Gold Medal With 3-1 Triumph Over Korea

Before 12,136 fans at Morris Brown College, Alyson ANNAN recorded two goals and Katrina POWELL tallied a score to lead Australia to a 3-1 verdict in the women's hockey gold-medal game. Ironically this was the second gold-medal match appearance for both countries, with the last time being in 1988 in Seoul when Australia registered a two-goal triumph (2-0) to take the gold. CHO Eun-Jung scored in the 31st minute for Korea to tie the game 1-1 at halftime, but the second half belonged to the Aussies and their ever-present offensive attack. ANNAN's second goal came on a penalty stroke in the 44th minute, and POWELL rifled home an insurance goal in the 63rd minute. ANNAN set two Olympic Games records during the match. Her two goals were the most ever scored in a gold-medal match, and her eight points during the tournament tied her with gold-medal opponent CHANG Eun-Jung for the most points scored in an Olympic tournament. Australia finished the tournament as the only undefeated team (men or women) at 7-0-1. Korea ended at 4-2-2.

Final Score: AUS 3, KOR 1.

The United States was defeated for the seventh consecutive game as Malaysia registered a 4-0 men's hockey victory to earn 11th place at the 1996 Olympic Games. Malaysia's win upped their record to 1-4-2, while the United States ends the Olympic tournament at 0-7.

Final Score: MAS 4, USA 1.

"I think our target was gold. If you don't come here to win, you are a tourist," said Malaysia coach Volker KNAPP. "But a more realistic goal for us was to come in anywhere from 5th to 8th."
