(29 July 1996; Day 10)
Throughout the history of man, memorable quotations have outlasted empires, countries and rulers. From Julius Caesar's "Et tu, Brute?" to Abraham Lincoln's "Four score and seven years ago..." to Yogi Berra's thoughts on baseball, quotes and memorable sayings are remembered for their sincerity, cleverness and poignancy.
While not all of the quotes given by players and coaches at the 1996 Olympic Games equal those of Martin Luther King Jr., some have certainly caught the attention of reporters ... for one reason or another. What follows are some of the more memorable quotes from the hockey venues in Atlanta.
Malaysian coach Volker KNAPP on playing a game at 8:30: "Malaysians are no good in the morning. They are used to late nights. Not that we are going wild or anything like that. It is just their style to get up late."
British goalkeeper Simon MASON on his team's final preliminary match loss to Australia: "This is absolutely gutting. We've worked so hard for months and months for a place in the semifinals. One game and it's gone out the window."
Great Britain's Calum GILES on MASON's performance during the Olympic Games: "You've got to give it to Simon. He's played absolutely God-like."
Australian coach Frank MURRAY on veteran player Mark HAGER's injury caused when he hit himself in the head with his stick: "I can't believe it. He's been playing so long, you wouldn't think he would do something stupid like that."
Jonathan CLARK, men's coach for the United States on the patriotic, but uninformed home crowd: "There was one instance where the umpire blew a short corner. The crowd booed. I told the umpire that they don't even know the rules and even they got it right."
Australia women's coach Ric CHARLESWORTH on his thoughts prior to the Olympic tournament: "I thought there was only one team that could win every match. That was us."
British women's coach Susan SLOCOMBE on what might give her team confidence during a scoring drought: "We have seen some goals on video during this competition where the ball goes right between the goalkeeper's legs. If this doesn't give the girls confidence, then I don't know what will."
Spanish women's coach Jose BRASA on his thoughts after his team dropped to 0-4-1 after winning the gold medal in Barcelona: "I want this Olympics to finish as soon as possible."
