Olympic Yachting Overview

Kingston, Acapulco, Long Beach, Nova Icaria, Savannah. The names sound more like tourist destinations than Olympic venues, but to followers of international yachting the names are as Olympian as Montreal, Mexico City, Los Angeles, Barcelona and Atlanta.

Away from the "Olympitropolis" of sporting activity in the heart of Atlanta, the yachting venue at Savannah is anything but serene. More than 400 athletes are expected to compete in 12 intense days of multi-race sailing in 10 medal events featuring eight boat classes.

Of the eight events at the Olympic Games, the Laser, Soling, Star and Tornado classes are open events, allowing men and women to compete together. Men and women compete in separate events in the IMCO One-Design and 470, while men only compete in the Finn and women only in the Europe.

Two new boats hit the waves for the first time at the Centennial Games with the IMCO One-design replacing the Lechner while the Laser takes the place of the Flying Dutchman.
