Men's Hockey/Pool B, Match #11

RSA vs. GBR

British Break Into Win Column, Tie For Second With 2-0 Decision:

Great Britain received goals from Jon WYATT and Calum GILES on penalty corner plays to earn its first victory of the Olympic Games, a 2-0 decision over South Africa. South Africa and Great Britain had entered Saturday night's game with identical 0-0-3 records. With the win, the British are now in a second-place tie in Pool B with Australia, setting up a critical confrontation between the two countries Monday morning.

Final Score: GBR 2, RSA 0.

"We had to get the win today," said British goalkeeper Simon MASON. "It was a big win. We've got to be happy with it, really."


Men's Hockey/Pool B, Match #12

NED vs. KOR

Dutch Continue to Lead in Pool B With 3-1 Win Over Korea:

The Netherlands solidified its lead in Pool B with a 3-1 victory over Korea in the final game of men's hockey on Saturday at Morris Brown College. KIM Young-Kyu got Korea on the scoreboard in the 19th minute to give his team a 1-0 halftime lead, but Taco VAN DEN HONERT scored twice and Teun de NOOIJER added a goal in the second half to give the Netherlands the win. With a 3-1 record, the Dutch are on top of the Pool B standings with 7 points. Korea is now 0-2-2.

Final Score: NED 3, KOR 1.


Day 8, Game 1 (Classification 1 of 2)

Germany vs. Netherlands

Germany Defeats Netherlands

Germany overpowered the Netherlands in the second half to come away with a 9-6 victory in classification water polo action at the Olympic Games on Saturday morning.

Dirk KLINGENBERG scored a game-high three goals in leading Germany to the win. Davor ERJAVEC also pitched in with a pair of goals. Leading the Netherlands was Harry VAN DER MEER, who is currently the co-leader in the scoring column in the tournament with 15 goals (tied with Romania's Vlad HAGIU), had two goals in the game.

The two teams were tied at the intermission with three goals each but Germany broke open the game in the second half, outscoring the Netherlands 6-3. KLINGENBERG and ERJAVEC both scored their second goals of the game in the third quarter, putting Germany up 6-4. KLINGENBERG added his third goal of the game in the final quarter, giving Germany its largest lead of the game, 8-4.

Germany improves to 2-4 in tournament action and will play in the ninth place game at 9:30 on 28 July. The Netherlands will play in the 11th place game at 8:00.

Day 8, Game 2 (Classification 2 of 2)

Romania vs. Ukraine

Romania Wins First Game of Tournament

Romania jumped out to a quick start and never looked back en route to an 11-8 victory over Ukraine in a classification game at the Olympic Games water polo tournament.

Vlad HAGIU, the team captain, led Romania with a game-high four goals. He is currently tied for the scoring lead in the tournament with the Netherlands' Harry VAN DER MEER with 15 goals. Vadym ROZHDESTVENSKY and Tolik SOLODUN each scored two goals for the Ukraine.

Istvan MOLDVAI gave Romania a 6-1 lead with under 3 minutes to play in the first half, but the Ukraine came back with two goals in the last two minutes to cut the lead to 6-3.

Romania maintained a four-goal lead throughout most of the second half but went up by five (11-6) midway through the final quarter on Nicolae FULGEANU's second goal of the game.

The Ukraine polished off the game scoring with goals by SOLODUN, his second, and Andriy KOVALENKO.

The Ukraine (0-6-1) will play the Netherlands at 8:00 on 28 July. Romania (1-5-1) will play Germany at 9:30.

Final Score: ROM 11, UKR 8.


Pool B, Match #10

MAS vs. AUS

Australia's CHOPPY Scores Three Times, Leads 5-1 Win:

Baeden CHOPPY scored three times in a 6:00 span in the first half, to cap his team's four-goal outburst in the first 10:00 of the match, and lead Australia to a 5-1 victory over Malaysia on Saturday. Stephen DAVIES started the scoring for the Aussies, now 2-1-1, with a penalty stroke goal at the 32:43 mark of the first half, and Paul LEWIS added a field goal in the second half to finish the scoring. Malaysia now stands at 0-2-2.
