Olympic Archery Recaps: 29 July (Day 10)

Women's Archery/Individual Preliminaries

Nazaridze of Turkey Sets Olympic Record; Korean Contingent in Hot Pursuit

Scoring 168 of a possible 180 points, Natalia NAZARIDZE set an Olympic record today in her round of the women's archery competition held at the Stone Mountain Archery complex. YOON Hye Young of Korea, with a score of 167, paces the Korean entrants in this event. All three of her teammates (KIM, Kyung Wook, YOON Hye-Young and KIM Yo-Sun) also will advance to Wednesday's semifinal field of 16.

In her first match of the day, pre-tournament favorite Corenelia PFOHL of Germany was upset by Olga ZABUGINA of Belarus. ZABUGINA lost to Allison WILLIAMSON of Great Britain in her next round.

Janet DYKMAN is USA's remaining hope for a medal in this event as she slipped past Christa BACKMAN (SWE) and YANG Jianping (CHN) to take another step up the ladder.

The rest of DYKMAN's American teammates didn't fare as well; Lindsay LANGSTON survived her first round match edging YANG Chu-Chi (TPE) only to be eliminated by Joanna NOWICKA of Poland. NOWICKA had knocked Judi ADAMS (USA) out earlier in the morning.

The men's preliminaries in the individual competitions are on tap for tomorrow.
