Olympic Hockey Recaps: 22 July (Day 3)

GER vs. IND

Germany, India Battle to 1-1 Deadlock:

In a game neither squad could afford to lose if it hoped to stay in medal contention, Germany and India struggled to a 1-1 tie in the opener of Monday's men's hockey evening session. Mukesh NANDONOORI got India on the scoreboard in the 62nd minute of play, and Stefan SALIGER knotted the score with his goal in the 66th minute. Indian goalkeeper Subbaiah ANJAPARAVANDA was sensational, deflecting all seven of Germany's penalty corner attempts. Final Score: GER 1, IND 1.


Men's Hockey Pool A, Match #6

ARG vs. USA

Argentina's First-half Landslide Dooms Americans:

Argentina exploded for five goals in the first half and crusied to a 5-2 victory over the United States in the final men's hockey match on Monday. The first-half onslaught was led by Jorge LOMBI and Fernando FERRARA, who scored two goals each. The United States rallied for two goals in the second half, with Marq MELLOR and Steve JENNINGS each finding the net. Final Score: ARG 5, USA 2.


Pool A, Match 4

Spain Surprises Again with Win over Pakistan:

Spain continued its improbable run through the Pool A favorites with a 3-0 victory over Pakistan in the opening game of Monday's men's hockey competition. Javier ARNAU starred for the Spaniards, scoring two goals, while Juan ESCARRE added the third tally. Goalkeeper Ramon JUFRESA was once again masterful in goal, stopping all four of Pakistan's shots. Spain now stands at 2-0 in Pool A with wins over Germany and Pakistan, while Pakistan fell to 1-1. Final Score: ESP 3, PAK 0.


Women's Tournament, Match 7

AUS vs. ARG

Aussies Show Power in 7-1 Triumph: The Australian women's hockey team received three goals from Alyson ANNAN and four players added a goal each as Australia rolled to a 7-1 win over Argentina in Monday's opening game at Clark Atlanta University. After staking a 3-0 lead at intermission, Australia added two goals in a two-minute span early in the second half to break the game open. Jorgelina RIMOLDI PUIG scored the only goal for Argentina. Final Score: AUS 7, ARG 1.

Match 8

USA vs. KOR

Last-Minute Heroics Lift Americans 3-2 Barb MAROIS scored on a penalty corner shot with just :06 remaining in the match, lifting the United States to a dramatic 3-2 win over Korea on Monday. After taking a 2-0 lead at halftime on goals by Tracey FUCHS and Marcia PANKRATZ, Korea rallied for two goals in the second half (one each by CHANG Eun-Jung and LEE Eun-Kyung). But with the clock ticking down, MAROIS converted on the penalty corner, giving the United States its first women's hockey victory since 1984. Final Score: USA 3, KOR 2.
