Olympic Boxing Recap: (Day 6)

Bantamweight Boxing (54kg)/Round 2

Vichairachanon KHADPO (THA) showed his strengths again tonight as he advanced into the quarterfinals, defeating Carlos BARRETO from Venezuela. KHADPO won a 14-6 decision, scoring 6 consecutive points in the first round. BARRETO knocked down KHADPO with a right hook in the early moments of Round 2, but KHADPO came back and ended the round 9-5. In the final round KHADPO continued to dominate BARRETO.

Other boxers advancing to the quarterfinals are Hicham MAFIL (MAR), Crinu OLTEANU (ROM) and Isvan KOVACS (HUN), who is ranked third in the world.

"I am really glad I won,"said KHADPO. "I felt in the first round I could win. That's the way (style) I should bow."

Welterweight Boxing (67kg)/Round 2

The silver medalist at the 1995 World Championships, Oleg SAITOV (RUS), started the welterweight class with a win. Looking solid all three rounds, SAITOV scored with a left lead to open the bout and then strung together three more points in the last 34 seconds of the round to take a 4-0 lead. In the second round SAITOV stretched his lead to 7-1 but BAE Ho Jo (HKG) came on strong in the end, landing a left swing to close the deficit to 8-3. In the third round, SAITOV continued his dominance. The final score was 9-5.

In an upset, Vitalijus KARPACIAUSKAS (LTU), bronze medalist at the 1995 World Championships, was defeated by Kamel CHATER (TUN). CHATER stopped KARPACIAUSKAS in the first round, knocking him to the floor with a left hook. That bout was followed by Nairman ATAYEV (UZB), who is ranked third in the world. He won his bout by a score of 11-7. Daniel SANTOS from Puerto Rico, was the last boxer in this weight class that advanced on to the quarterfinals.

"The public is more open for a brave sport, " said SAITOV. "Professionally, the fight was well fought and I fought the better fight."

Heavyweight Boxing (91 kg)/Round 2

The last weightclass boxing tonight was the heavyweight class. Luan KRASNIQI (GER), a silver medalist at the World Championships and ranked No. 4, defeated Igor KSHININ (RUS) 10-2.

The last bout of the night featured Felix SAVON (CUB), who stopped his opponent with a right uppercut with 30 seconds left in the first round. SAVON was leading 6-0 at the time.

Other boxers advancing were Serguei DYCHKOV of Belarus and Giorgi KANDELAKI of Georgia.
