Women's K1 Slalom/Training Run

HILGERTOVA Runs Clean in Women's K1 Slalom Training Run

Stepanka HILGERTOVA of the Czech Republic turned in a clean run for the best overall time Friday in the women's Olympic canoe/kayak slalom singles training run at the Ocoee Whitewater Center in Tennessee. HILGERTOVA, one of three competitors making clean runs on the rugged Ocoee River course, turned in a time of 166.24 and was not penalized through the 25 gates -- six gates which are upstream -- of the 415m whitewater run.

Anne BOIXEL of France turned in the fastest run of 160.67, but picked up two 5-second penalties for the second best total time of 170.67. The third best effort came from gold medal favorite Kordula STRIEPECKE of Germany who finished with a clean run in 172.58. The only other clean run turned in by the 30 competitors in women's K1 came from Elena KALISKA of Slovakia who finished in seventh place overall, clocking 180.46.

The Czech Republic was well represented in Friday's training run. Besides HILGERTOVA, two teammates finished among the top six. Marcela SADILOVA finished fourth in 178.25 while Irena PAVELKOVA was sixth in 178.80. The top United States finisher was Cathy HEARNS in 12th place, 23.32 seconds behind the leader. The women's slalom event will be contested Saturday, just one of four medal events being held outside the state of Georgia.

"It's tough," said Elisabeth MICHELER-JONES (GER), gold medalist at the 1992 Olympic Games, regarding the Ocoee River course. "It's harder than Barcelona. It flows different than an artificial course. There's more forward paddling and more strokes to use."


Men's C1 Slalom, Training Run

JANDA Runs Fastest Men's C1 Slalom Training Run

The Czech Republic's Pavel JANDA turned in a flawless training run on Friday to post the fastest finish in the men's Olympic canoe singles (C1) at the Ocoee Whitewater Center. JANDA made a clean run through the 25 gates in a time of 157.30. Three of the top four finishers made clean runs during Friday's training run. Soeren KAUFMANN and Martin LANG, both from Germany, made clean runs to finish third and fourth, respectively. KAUFMANN clocked in at 160.72 while LANG was covered the 415m Ocoee River course in 162.68.

Emmanuel BRUGVIN of France, top-ranked in C1 slalom, finished second with a total time of 159.93. BRUGVIN had one, 5-second gate penalty. The fastest time turned in by the 30 competitors was 152.08 by France's Patrice ESTANGUET, who picked up three, 5-second penalties and finished eighth overall. The United State's top medal hopeful, David HEARN, finished ninth in the training run with a total of 168.72. Men's C1 medal competition will take place with two runs on Saturday.

Men's C2 Slalom, Training Run

Polish Duo Runs Clean in Men's C2 Slalom

The Polish team of Krzysztof KOLOMANSKI and Michal STANISZEWSKI ran a clean run of 162.46 for the fastest training run in the men's Olympic canoe doubles (C2) on Friday afternoon. KOLOMANSKI and STANISZEWSKI executed the 25 gates of the Ocoee Whitewater Center course flawlessly in 162.46. The real competition in C2 will take place Sunday, 28 July, as two runs will take place to determine the medal winners.

The Swiss team of Peter and Ueli MATTI also made a clean run in 168.27 for the second-fastest time recorded. Frank ADISSON and Wilfrid FORGUES of France finished third in the training run, penalized on one gate for a total time of 172.00. The United States team of Horace HOLDEN and Wayne DICKERT finished in 194.95 for eighth out of 15, two-man teams competing in the C2 slalom event.

Men's K1 Slalom, Training Run

Ireland's Wiley Turns in Fastest K1 Slalom Training Run

Ian WILIEY of Ireland turned in the fastest time in the men's Olympic kayak singles (K1) Friday afternoon at the Ocoee Whitewater Center. Wiley ran a clean race in a time of 146.40, just .63 seconds ahead of Fedja MARUSIC who also raced clean. The top six finishers covered the course clean, that is, they received no penalties for hitting or missing one of the 25 gates on the course. David FORD of Canada finished the training run in third place with a time of 148.00.

The top two favorites for the gold medal in K1 -- Scott SHIPLEY of the United States and Jochen LETTMANN of Germany -- finished in the top 10. LETTMANN finished in seventh while SHIPLEY was in eighth. SHIPLEY, the 1995 World Cup champion, is USA's top prospect for a medal in the four slalom events. The 44 competitors in men's K1 will battle for the gold medal on Sunday, 28 July.
