Rhythmic Gymnastics/Individual Semifinals
Favorites are the Qualifiers for Finals
The competition in the rhythmic gymnastics preliminaries went as expected Saturday in the University of Georgia Coliseum, with the sport's top names scoring the best for four routines. In Sunday's finals, the scores start again at zero, so there still could be some surprises on the medals stand as the top 10 gymnasts compete.
The winner of the semifinal round was Ekaterina SEREBRYANSKAYA of the Ukraine, whose four-event score was 39.332. She opened Saturday's competition with the highest individual score to date, a 9.933 with the ball, and scored a 9.916 with the rope and 9.900 with the ribbon. She overcame a drop in her clubs routine which scored a 9.583.
Close behind is Elena VITRICHENKO, also of Ukraine, at 39.266. VITRICHENKO's ball routine scored a 9.900 and her ribbon performance scored 9.866. Ianina BATRYCHINA of the Russian Federation, who scored an impressive 9.866 with the ball, is in third at 39.232.
"I'm glad for how I've done," said Maria PETROVA of Bulgaria, who qualified in fourth. "Today I was a bit tired, but I think I did well. I would like to perform well tomorrow like today, and even better of course. There are many tough competitors, like VITRICHENKO."
