Qualifications
Nations qualify based on results of the 1996 continental championships. USA automatically qualified as host country.
Competition Format
Each match shall consist of one period of 5 minutes. The match may end in less than 5 minutes if either wrestler scores a fall or technical fall. In order to be declared the winner by points at the end of the regulation 5-minute period, a wrestler must have scored a minimum of three technical points.
If both wrestlers have the same score or neither has obtained the required minimum 3 points at the end of regulation time, the referee immediately orders the bout into an overtime period of 3 minutes. The overtime continues until the first technical point is scored, to the extent that this will enable the winner to attain the required minimum 3 points. In a situation where neither wrestler has scored the three required points and the wrestler with no points executes a move that places his opponent in the immediate fall position, the fall is declared valid.
