Sweden Outlasts Americans, 23-19:
Sweden went on a 6-2 run at the end of the match to defeat the United States 23-19 in the men's handball opener for both squads at the Georgia World Congress Center on Wednesday night. The United States rallied from a 17-14 deficit to tie the game with just under 11:00 remaining, but Magnus WISLANDER and Johan PETTERSSON scored two goals each in the deciding run to ice the game for the Sweden. Final Score: SWE 23, USA 19.
GER vs. BRA
Germany Offense Too Much for Brazil, 30-20:
Germany opened up a 13-7 lead at halftime, then put on the offensive fireworks in the second half to pull away from Brazil and log a 30-20 victory in men's handball at the Georgia World Congress Center. A 6-1 start that included goals by five different players set the tone for what would be a very balanced and very potent German attack. Final Score: GER 30, BRA 20.
ESP vs. FRA
France Wins Close Call With Spain, 27-25:
In a game that was close throughout, France's Stephane STOECKLIN scored with :06 remaining, sealing a 27-25 verdict over Spain. France, the defending bronze medalist, led by 10-9 at halftime with Gueric KERVADEC contributing four goals before intermission. Spain's Talant DUJSHEBAEV also totaled four goals before halftime. Final Score: FRA 27, ESP 25.
CRO vs. SUI
Final Shot Misses to Give Croatia Victory, 23-22:
Switzerland's Marc BAUMGARTNER missed a shot at the buzzer, allowing Croatia to escape with a 23-22, come-from-behind victory in Pool A competition. Croatia, which earned its first-ever Olympic handball victory, trailed at the half 14-12. BAUMGARTNER led Switzerland with five goals, while Daniel SPENGLER and Roman BRUNNER added four each. Patrik CAVAR paced Croatia's scoring attack with eight goals. Final Score: CRO 23, SUI 22.
"Our 5-1 defense was really good," said Croatian coach Velimir KLJAIC. "Switzerland thought they could win with a passive offense, but they made too many mistakes."
ALG vs. EGY
Egypt's Second-Half Surge Produces Win:
After trailing at halftime 9-7, Egypt rode the scoring of Amero EI GEIOUSHY to a 19-16 men's handball win. Of Egypt's 12 second-half goals, EI GEIOUSHY produced seven, including seven out of eight scores, and four consecutive, during a critical stretch in which Egypt took the lead for good. Ahmed BELAL scored to give Egypt a 15-14 advantage that it would not relinquish. Algeria's Redouane AOUACHRIA scored four consecutive goals after intermission to pace his squad. Final Score: EGY 19, ALG 16.
KUW vs. RUS
Defending Gold Medalists Open With 32-20 Win:
Russia, playing with an all-star squad that includes members of the previous two gold medal winning teams, opened men's handball Pool A play with a convincing 32-20 win over Kuwait on Wednesday. Oleg KULESHOV scored on all seven of his attempts, while Valeri GOPIN accounted for five tallies for the Russians. Kuwait was led by Salah ALMARZOUQ, who had six goals. Final Score: RUS 32, KUW 20.
"I liked our attack. It was really fast. The match was alive and active and the fans liked it," said Russian coach Vladimir MAXIMOV.
