    Qualifications
    Teams qualify by being one of the top seven countries at the 1995 World Championships, or by regional/continental zone. The United States automatically qualified as host country. Individuals qualify by being one of the three fencers on one of the eight teams already qualify by World Cup rankings, or by continental zone.

    Individual competition is direct elimination (15-touch bouts). Team competition is direct elimination (relay format).

    Olympic History
    Fencing was contested at the 1896 Olympic Games and is one of the few sports to have been held in every Modern Games. The French, Germans and Italians have mastered the sport and have dominated along with the Hungarians and Soviets. Aladar GEREVICH of Hungary won six gold medals in team sabre, and from 1924 to 1964, Hungary’s sabre teams won 46 consecutive matches and seven gold medals.
