Olympic Archery Recaps: 30 July (Day 11)

Men's Individual/1/16 Round

Top Three Seeds Still Alive

Three of the top four seeded archers advanced to the round of 16. Missing from this group is Vadim CHIKAREV (KAZ) the No. 4 seed, who was stunned by the No. 29 seed Jose ANCHONDO (MEX), 156-154. Four other upsets of note included No. 6 seeded Baljinima TSIREMPILOV (RUS) losing to No. 38 seed Tomi POIKOLAINEN (FIN), 163-164; No. 12 seeded Rod WHITE (USA) losing to No. 21 seed Paul VERMEIREN (BEL). 159-158; and No. 45 seed Lionel TORRES (FRA) upsetting No.13-seeded Hiroshi YAMAMOTO (JPN), 164-163.

On the flip side, the top three seeds, Michele FRANGILLI (ITA), JANG Yong-Ho (KOR) and OH Kyo-Moon (KOR) all advanced. OH advanced in style setting an Olympic record with 169 points. Justin HUISH (USA) the No. 9 seed and Richard JOHNSON (USA) the No. 15 seed both advanced easily.

The 1/8 round of competition will begin at 9:00 on 1 August.


Men's Archery Individual/Opening Round

Olympic Record Set Twice

Only one top seed lost in the opening round of the men's individual competition. HSIEH Sheng-Feng (TPE), seeded 57th, upset Jackson FEAR (AUS), seeded 8th, 164 to 162. Top seeds Michele FRANGILLI (ITA), JANG Yong-Ho (KOR), OH Kyo-Moon (KOR) and Vadim CHIKAREV (KAZ) all advanced. Jari LIPPONEN (FIN) seeded fifth, and KIM Bo-Ram (KOR), the 11th seed, both advanced by setting an Olympic record with 168 points. Justin HUISH, Rod WHITE and Richard JOHNSON, all of the United States advanced. The round of sixteen will be decided this afternoon.
