Men's Singles -- First Round

Agassi Gets Singles Competition Underway:

Top-seeded Andre Agassi (USA) had his hands full in his first-ever Olympic contest, battling nearly two-hours with Sweden's Jonas BJORKMAN before advancing to Thursday's second round with a 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5) victory. AGASSI had a match point at 6-5 in the second set , but BJORKMAN held serve in the final game to force the tiebreak. Earlier in the day, eighth-seeded Marc ROSSET looked every inch the defending gold medalist, breezing through to the second round with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Hicham ARAZI (MAR) on Center Court. The upset of the day was Australian Todd WOODBRIDGE's 6-2, 6-4 defeat of ninth-seeded Jan SIEMERINK (NED). Seeded Player Results: No. 1 Andre AGASSI (USA) d. Women's Singles -- First Round

Seles Leads Top Women Tennis Players to Second Round:

The women's singles seeds had little trouble at Stone Mountain on Tuesday, as all the top players advanced to Thursday's second round with relative ease. Top-ranked Monica SELES made the most of her first Olympic tennis appearance, defeating CHEN Li of the People's Republic of China, 6-0, 6-4 on Center Court. Also posting victories were No. 3 seed Arantxa SANCHEZ VICARIO (ESP), and sixth-seeded Jana NOVOTNA (CZE), who moved through to the second round after an injury default by Romania's Ruxandra DRAGOMIR. Seeded Player Results: No. 1 Monica SELES (USA) d. CHEN Li (CHN), 6-0, 6-4; No. 3 Aranxta SANCHEZ VICARIO (ESP) d. Dominique VAN ROOST (BEL), 6-1, 7-5; No. 6 Jana NOVOTNA (CZE) d.
