Afonso MARTINS scored goals in each half to lead Portugal to a
2-0 shutout of Tunisia in first round Group A play at Robert F.
Kennedy Memorial Stadium in Washington, D.C. MARTINS' first goal
came at 12:39 with help from teammate Paulo ALVES while his second
score came at 67:08. Tunisia's Adel SELLIM missed an opportunity
early in the second half to tie the match on a penalty kick that
hit the crossbar in the upper right-hand corner of the goal.
Portugal finished with a 14-8 advantage in shots on goal over
Tunisia. Final Score: POR 2, TUN 0
ESP vs. KSA
Defending Champion Spain Defeats Saudi Arabia: Defending Olympic champion Spain downed Saudi Arabia 1-0 in the first round of Group B play at the Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando. The match's only score came in the 79th minute when Oscar GARCIA headed a crossing pass from Gaizka MENDIETA past Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Hussain AL-SADIG. Spain, the top European seed, came close to scoring before the decisive goal, banging two shots off the goalposts while forward Sanchez MORIENTES missed twice from point-blank range before GARCIA'S header finally found the mark. Saudi Arabia's best scoring opportunity came in the 69th minute when Hamzah FALATAH beat Spanish goalkeeper Juan MORA with a curving volley, but defender Santiago DENIA cleared it off the line with a header.

FRA vs. AUS
France Shuts Out Australia: Robert PIRES and Florian MAURICE each scored goals in guiding France to a 2-0 victory over Australia. The first round Group B match was played at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Fla. PIRES scored Frances' first goal in the 12th minute. The goal came off a corner kick that went through a defender's legs and deflected off Claude MAKELELE to PIRES. MAURICE's score came when the forward found himself alone against Australian goalkeeper Frank JURIC in the 75th minute. MAURICE's shot glanced off JURIC's left foot, but had enough topspin to reach the empty net. Australia had to play most of the match with 10 men when Daniel TIATTO drew a red card during a collision with MAKELELE near the midway point of the first half.
