Maikro ROMERO (CUB) narrowly escaped defeat to beat Bolat DZUMADILOV (KAZ) 12-11.DZUMADLIOV led 5-2 in the first and 8-5 in the second. It was ROMERO'S strong third round that gave him the win. ROMERO took control in the third round, outscoring DZUMADILOV 7-3, as he pressed the attack and was finally able to score inside. ROMERO tied the bout at 10-10 with a right cross and took the lead with another right cross with 45 seconds left in the bout. ROMERO is the third Cuban boxer to win gold.

Thailand's Somluck KAMSING came out on top Sunday as he won the featherweight gold medal making only the second time in Olympic history a Thailand boxer won a gold medal. KAMSING defeated two-time world champion Serafim TODOROV of Bulgaria. Both boxers had a slow first round. KAMSING led at the bell 2-1. However KAMSING came alive in the second as he stretched his lead to 5-2. In the third round, KAMSING stretched his lead to 6-2, 32 seconds into the final round. TODOROV scored the next two points bringing the score to 6-4. After KAMSING scored, TODOROV closed within 7-5 with 47 seconds left. KAMSING finished the scoring and took the bout, 8-5, with a left hook with 10 seconds remaining in the match.

"I'm very , very happy." said KAMSING. " I have fought with my opponent before and lost. We got the same score but the opponent side won (Tiebreaker) because he boxed more. We have the same style. Today I beat my opponent. I'm very, very, happy."
Hector VINENT (CUB) made it four gold medals for the Cubans, as he easily decisioned Oktay URKAL of Germany. VINENT led the first and second rounds with the score of 14-7 entering the final round. URKAL tried to rally in the third but it was too late. He landed two quick blows to close the score to 14-9, but VINENT pulled away for the final victory, 20-13.

"Before this all started, I used to think a bronze would be nice but silver is even better," said URKAL (GER). "It is very difficult for us to get here because we have to fight qualifying matches even in Germany. They are even tougher than the European qualifying matches."
Ever since the 1948 Games the USA has always won at least one boxing gold medal. David REID kept the streak intact. REID defeated Cuba's Alfredo DUVERGEL, the reigning world champion, in a bout that had the entire capacity crowd on their feet. DUVERGEL opened the scoring with a left-right combination to take a 2-0 lead 30 seconds into the round. REID tied the score at 2-2 with 1:23 left in the round with two rights. DUVERGEL threw a flurry of punches at the end of the round to increase his lead to 5-2. DUVERGEL dominated the second round shutting out REID 8-0, and handing REID a standing eight count 50 seconds into the round. DUVERGEL led 15-5. Thirty-six seconds into the third round REID knocked DUVERGEL to the floor with a right hook. The referee stopped the fight as DUVERGEL staggered trying to recover. At the time the bout was stopped the score was 16-7 in DUVERGEL'S favor.

Vasilii JIROV, bronze medalist at the world championships, now has an Olympic gold medal, after defeating Seung-Bae LEE (KOR). JIROV controlled the entire bout. In the first round JIROV got off to a fast start scoring the first three points , and then outscoring LEE, 5-1, in the second to stretch his lead to 9-3 at the bell. In the third JIROV seemed to score at will. LEE received a standing eight count after JIROV connected with a left hook with 57 seconds left in the bout. The final score was 17-4.

"I'm very happy to win the fight and the gold medal," said JIROV. "I have a lot of experience and it showed in this fight."
Vladimir KLICHKO of Ukraine defeated Paea WOLFGRAMM of Tonga to clinch the gold medal. The first round was slow for both boxers, at the bell WOLFGRAMM led 1-0. In the second round KLICHKO found his aim early and landed two rights to take a 2-1 lead. But WOLFGRAMM seemed to stun KLICHKO with a right cross with 1:33 left in the round tying the bout. WOLFGRAMM went ahead 3-2 with a left hook with 31 seconds left in the round. KLICHKO took the third round and the bout as he shut out WOLFGRAMM 5-0. WOLFGRAMM was boxing with a broken right wrist and broken nose. KLICHKO won 7-3.
