KIRCHHOFF Wins Second Jumping Gold

As the next-to-last rider to go in the final round of individual show jumping competition, Germany's Ulrich KIRCHHOFF piloted Jus de Pommes to a clear round with one time penalty to become the first rider of the day to finish both rounds with no jumping penalties and win the gold medal. A jump-off ensued to decide the silver and bronze medalists. Of the seven competing in the jump-off, Alexandra LEDERMANN and Rochet M was the first to go, and turned in a clear round in a time of 41.46 seconds. Four rides later, Willi MELLIGER and Calvaro of Switzerland turned in the only other clear jump-off round in a time of 38.07 to edge LEDERMANN for the silver. Germany finished as the top medal-winning team at the equestrian venue, winning four medals, all of them gold.

"Our Chef d'equippe told me that nobody had gone clear," said Germany's Ulrich KIRCHHOFF of the second round. "I went in with a clear round first in my mind, and kept my horse balanced on his feet."
