AUS vs. KOR

Australia Completes Preliminaries with a Win

Australia overcame a seven-run deficit to defeat Korea 11-8 in the final game of the round-robin preliminaries of the Olympic baseball competition at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. Korea finished 1-6, while Australia was 2-5 in the seven-game preliminaries.

After Korea jumped ahead with 7 runs in the first three innings, Australia rallied in the fourth to take the lead with the aid of three consecutive doubles by Peter VOGLER, Jason HEWITT and Steven HINTON. Andrew SCOTT added a two-run home run later in the stanza as Australia battled all the way into the lead. After Australia pushed across a ninth run in the seventh, Korea ended its drought as CHOI Man-Ho hit a home run 451 feet away into the third deck in leftfield to pull Korea to within a run at 9-8.

HINTON added a run for Australia with a RBI double in the eighth, coming around to score as the throw went to the backstop to build a three-run cushion at 11-8. Shane TONKIN pitched the final six innings in relief to earn the win as Australia prevailed.

Final Score: AUS 11, KOR 8.

ITA vs. JPN

Japan Advances to Medal Round with Win Over Italy

Japan got a strong performance from its pitching staff to advance to the medal round of the 1996 Olympic baseball tournament with a 12-1 win over Italy. Italy finishes with a 2-5 overall record, while Japan advances to the medal round with a 4-3 mark. By virtue of a win over Nicaragua, which also was 4-3 in round-robin action, Japan earns the No. 3 seed and will play the United States on 1 August at 19:00.

Japan starter Koichi MISAWA combined with Jutaro KIMURA and Masahiko MORI, who provided 4.1 innings of scoreless relief, as Italy was held to just six hits. The lone Italian run came on a Ruggero BAGIALEMANI RBI double in the fourth. Luigi CARROZZA went 3-for-4 on the day for Italy.

With the exception of the third inning, Japan scored in every inning to build a lead that would result in the international run-difference rule in the eighth. Makota IMAOKA hit a two-run home run in the final inning to put Japan over the 10-run mark, ending Italy's medal round aspirations.

Final Score: JPN 12, ITA 1.

USA vs. NED

USA's DICKEY Throws Three-Hitter to Shutdown the Netherlands

R.A. DICKEY threw a three-hitter and four players hit home runs as the USA defeated the Netherlands handily 17-1. The USA finished 6-1 in the round-robin preliminaries to earn the No. 2 seed in the medal round. The Netherlands completes its play with a 2-5 record.

DICKEY allowed only a solo home run by Edsel MARTIS among the three hits by the Netherlands. The USA scored 17 runs on 18 hits off four Dutch pitchers. The USA would provide all the support necessary for DICKEY in the first as Jacque JONES and Matt LECROY each homered as part of five-run opening inning. Travis LEE and Brian LOYD added round-trippers later in the contest as the USA ended the game after seven by the international run-difference rule.

Eight of the nine USA starters had at least one hit and seven scored in the ballgame. JONES and LECROY finished with four hits apeice and also scored four runs.

Final Score: USA 17, NED 1.

"At 8:45 this morning it didn't look as if anyone would be ready to play," said USA head coach Skip BERTMAN. "But when the bell sounded, as usual, ours guys were ready."
