Olympic Cycling Recaps: 24 July (Day 5)

Men's Sprint/Qualifiers

Men's Sprint Qualifiers Set:

Men's sprint qualifying rounds began Wednesday with 24 cyclist competing for seeding. Seeding for Thursday will be as follows: NEIWAND (AUS) vs. VASSSILOPOULOS (GRE); HARNETT (CAN) vs. BAZALIK; NOTHSTEIN (USA) vs. HRBACEK (SVK); FIEDLER (GER) vs. ESCUREDO (ESP); POKORNY (GER) vs. MORENO (ESP); HILL (AUS) vs. CLAY (USA); BURAN (CZE) vs. HIMONETOS (GRE); ROUSSEAU (FRA) vs. MAGNE (FRA); AND BERZIN (LAT) vs. CHIAPPA(ITA). Competition will continue Thursday at 10:55 at Stone Mountain Park Velodrome.

Best Times: Viesturs BERZINS, 11.008; Jose MORENO, 11.017; Larbros VASSILOPOULOS, 11.060; Martin HRBACEK, 11.076.


Men's Individual Pursuit Qualification Round

Italian Cyclist Sets Olympic and World Records:

Italy's Andrea COLLINELLI rode a swift time of 4:19.153 to set Olympic and world records. The record was previously held by Graeme OBREE (GBR),who did not qualify for the quarterfinals. Only the top eight cyclists advanced to the quarterfinals to compete in two-up heats, including: Phllippe ERMENAULT (FRA), 4:21.295; Aleksey MARKOV (RUS), 4:27.074; Juan MARTINEZ (ESP), 4:27.909; Bradley MCGEE (AUS), 4:27.954; Heiko SZONN (GER), 4:29.931; Walter PEREZ (ARG), 4:30.715; and Andriy YATSENKO (UKR), 4:30.751. In the quarterfinals, ERMRNAULT overtook PEREZ while COLLINELLI overtook YATSENKO. MCGEE beat out MARTINEZ and MORKOV knocked out SZONN to advance to the semifinals on Thursday. Best Times: Andrea COLLINELLI, 4.19.699; Phillippe ERMENAULT, 4.21.2; Aleksey MARKOV, 4:27.074.

Men's 1km Time Trial

World Record Holder KELLY Did Not Finish:

A tearful Shane KELLY (AUS), 1 km 1992 Olympic Games silver medalist and world record holder, was disqualified when his foot slipped from his cycle's new straps on the start and was unable to complete the event. While he was coping with personal disaster, Florian ROUSSEAU (FRA) was recording a presonal triumph. ROUSSEAU furiously sprinted to a Olympic record of 1:02.721 as fans cheered his victory. Erin Hartwell (USA), 1992 Games bronze medalist, rode one better this Olympiad to win the silver with a time of 1:02.940. Takanobu JUMONJI (JPN) won the bronze medal with a time of 1:03.261. Best Times: Florian ROUSSEAU, 1:02.712; Erin HARTWELL, 1:02.940; Takanobu JUMONJI, 1:03.261.

ROUSSEAU on seeing KELLY's start: "When it happened, I thought it was mechanical and he would be able to start again. When I realized it woudn't happen, I knew then that I was the Olympic champion...."

"I think it (a gold medal) was in reach.... It's an Olympic dream shattered...," said KELLY of his performance.

Women's Sprint 200m Flying Time Trial

Three Cyclists Beat HARINGA's 1992 Olympic Record:

Three cyclists in this competition beat the previous Olympic record set in Barcelona by Ingrid HARINGA (NED), who ranked fourth in the trial. Michelle FERRIS (AUS) sprinted to set the new record with a time of 11.212. Felicia BALLANGER (FRA) and Oksana GRISHINA (RUS) were second and third finishers, respectively. Although Erika SALUMAE (EST) is in the top 12 who will advance to the next round on Thursday, she came in at a disappointing ninth place with 11.566. Other qualifiers include: WANG Yan (CHN), Annette NEUMANN (GER), Connie PARASKEVIN-YOUNG (USA), Tayna DUBNICOFF (CAN), Daniela LARREAL (VEN), Mira KASSLIN (FIN), and Donna WYND (NZL). Best Times: Michelle FERRIS, 11.212; Felicia BALLANGER, 11.277; Oksana GRISHINA, 11.298.
