    Qualifications
Based on 1995 World Championships, held in Bogotá, Colombia in Oct 1995, wild cards and various continental championships in 1995. Each NOC selected the specific athletes through Olympic trials in the year prior to the Games.

    Competition Format
1km Time Trials: Cyclists race two at a time against the clock, not each other, for four laps, starting at opposite ends of the track. Riders’ times are ranked.
Sprint: Riders race in a best two-of-three format, jockeying for position on the first two laps to gain position for the final 200m sprint.
Individual Pursuit: Two cyclists at a time race in a 4km (men) or 3km (women) chase. Starting at opposite ends of the track, riders win by posting the fastest time or overtaking an opponent.
Team Pursuit: Same as individual pursuit, but results are based on the third rider of each four-man team. His time counts, and his team wins if he passes the other team’s third rider.
Points Race: Riders cover 25 km (women) or 40 km (men), accumulating points in lap sprints and double points in the final lap. The winner is the rider with the most points, unless a rider laps the field and is declared the winner.
