    Nations qualify based on results of the 1996 continental championships. USA automatically qualified as host country.

    Competition Format
    Each match shall consist of one period of 5 minutes. The match may end in less than 5 minutes if either wrestler scores a fall or technical fall. In order to be declared the winner by points at the end of the regulation 5-minute period, a wrestler must have scored a minimum of three technical points.
