Men's Singles Quarterfinals
No. 1 SUPRIANTO Falls to SIDEK
The top-ranked men's singles badminton player in the world, Indonesia's Joko SUPRIANTO, fell Sunday evening in Olympic men's singles badminton action to seventh-seeded Rashid SIDEK of Malaysia, 15-5, 15-12. SUPRIANTO had won the last six meetings between the two players. SIDEK capitalized on some crucial errors by SUPRIANTO to gain the victory.
In other men's singles action, fourth-seeded DONG Jiong of the People's Republic of China defeated fifth-seeded PARK Sung Woo of Korea in a pair of 15-6 games; third-seeded Heryanto ARBI of Indonesia defeated Korea's eighth-seeded LEE Kwang Jin, 15-0, 15-13; and Denmark's second-seeded Poul-Erik HOYER-LARSEN defeated defending Olympic gold medalist Allan BUDI KASUMA of Indonesia 15-5, 15-9.
SIDEK will face DONG, and ARBI will face HOYER-LARSEN in the semifinals on Tuesday.
AUDINA Upsets MARTIN, KIM Upsets YE
Sixteen-year-old Indonesian sensation Mia AUDINA, seeded eighth in the Olympic women's singles badminton tournament, defeated fourth-seeded Camilla MARTIN of Denmark, 11-6, 8-11, 11-5. In the first game, AUDINA grabbed the early lead, but MARTIN tied the game at 5-5. AUDINA then took charge, allowing only one more point. The second game went back-and-forth with MARTIN controlling a slight lead for the majority of the game. In the rubber game, AUDINA and MARTIN played closely in the beginning of the game, but once again AUDINA took control. She scored five unanswered points with the crowd chanting "Mi-a! Mi-a!" to win the match.
In another big upset, top-seeded YE Zhaoying of China fell to seventh-seeded KIM Ji Hyun of Korea in a hard-fought 11-5, 12-11 match. YE smashed only four shots in the first game and began the second game with the lead before KIM climbed closed the gap, eventually forcing YE to set the match at three points.
Second-seeded Susi SUSANTI of Indonesia, the 1992 Olympic gold medalist, had trouble putting away China's HAN Jingna, the No. 5 seed. HAN won the first game, 11-3, not allowing SUSANTI to take control. In the second game, SUSANTI gained the early lead, 6-0, before letting HAN tighten the score, 6-4. At that point, SUSANTI went on a tear, winning the game, 11-4. The third game was tight throughout, but SUSANTI took charge after HAN tied the game at 8-8, coming back to win 11-8.
In the other women's singles match, third-seeded BANG SOO Hyun of Korea trounced sixth-seeded YAO Yan of China, 11-3, 11-2.
SUSANTI will face BANG in the semifinals on Tuesday.
Asians Dominate Men's Doubles Badminton Competition
No men's doubles badminton team from outside of Asia remains in competition, as the field narrowed to four teams Sunday morning. Indonesia's team of ANTONIUS and Denny KANTONO and Malaysia's SOO Beng Kiang and TAN Kim Her defeated the final European teams.
Third-seeded ANTONIUS and Denny KANTONO rolled over Andreij ANTROPOV and Nickolaj ZUEV of the Russian Federation, 15-5, 15-1. In the second game, the serve changed hands only six times. Net errors hurt the Russian team, as they committed 18 net errors in the match and 38 total errors, in comparison to ANTONIUS and KANTONO, who had 12 total miscues.
SOO and TAN defeated Simon ARCHER and Chris HUNT, Great Britain's last remaining badminton competitors, 15-5, 15-12. In the first game, the Malaysians were up 9-0 before giving up any points. In the second game, ARCHER and HUNT gained an early lead, which they built to 9-5 before falling to SOO and TAN.
Second-seeded CHEAH Soon Kit and YAP Kim Hock of Malaysia had a hard time putting away Korea's HA Tae Kwon and KANG Kyung Jin, 18-17, 15-8. The first game alone took 41 minutes to complete and held 25 service changes. Top-seeded Rexy MAINAKY and Ricky SUBAGJA (INA) also won, defeating sixth-seeded HUANG Zhanzhong and JIANG Xin (CHN) in a pair of 15-7 games.
MAINAKY and SUBAGJA will face SOO and TAN, while ANTONIUS and KATONO will face CHEAH and YAP in the semifinals Monday night.
Top Seeds Advance in Women's Doubles
All of the top seeded women's doubles badminton pairs advanced to the semifinals on Monday. Fourth-seeded Helene KIRKEGAARD and Rikke OLSEN of Denmark defeated CHEN Ying and PENG Xingyong of the People's Republic of China, the No. 6 seeded team, in a long, hard-fought match, 15-6, 8-15, 15-5. While KIRKEGAARD and OLSEN seemed to dominate the first game, the Chinese pair came out strong in the second game, taking a commanding lead early in the game.
Another women's doubles team from Denmark, Ann JORGENSEN and Lotte OLSEN lost to top-seeded GIL Young Ah and JANG Hye Ock of Korea in a pair of 15-9 games, but not without a fight. In the first game, JORGENSEN and OLSEN grabbed an early lead, going up 9-3 before the Koreans turned up their level of play and scored 12 unanswered points. In the second games, the two teams exchanged leads through 7-7, when GIL and JANG took control.
China's QIN Yiyuan and TANG Yongshu defeated Denmark's third pair, Lisbet STUER-LAURIDSEN and Marlene THOMSEN, 15-8, 15-3; and top-seeded GE Fei and GU Jun of China defeated Indonesia's ELIZA and Rosiana ZELIN, 15-7, 15-3.
GIL and JANG will face QIN and TANG and KIRKEGAARD and OLSEN will face GE and GU in the semifinals.
