Olympic Cycling - Road Recaps: 21 July (Day 2)

Women's Road Final

Longo Cruises to Road Win:

Jeannie LONGO-CIPRELLI (FRA), winner of 20 world championship medals, finally has added an Olympic Gold to her impressive collection. She finished with a time of 2:36.13, 25 seconds ahead of Imelda CHIAPPA (ITA) and 31 seconds ahead of Canada's Clara HUGHES. In what was predicted to be a sprint to the flat, straight approach to the finish, turned into a race for the silver after the relentless LONGO-CIPRELLI built a insurmoutable lead. The 1992 silver medalist in Barcelona attacked the long course with her typical race strategy savvy, hanging in the middle of the pack until approximately the 1:40 mark when she, CHIAPPA and HUGHES broke away from the pack and maintained a comfortable margin of 25 seconds. In the final 10 minutes, LONGO-CIPRELLI powered away from her pursuers to win easily. Medalists: Gold: Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli (FRA) 2:36.13; Silver: Imelda CHIAPPA (ITA) 2:36.38; Bronze: Clara Hughes (CAN) 2:36.44.
