CRESPO Leads Argentina Into Men's Gold Medal Football Final

Argentina became the first team to advance to the gold medal game in men's Olympic football with a 2-0 win over Portugal on Wednesday before 78,212 fans at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Ga. Argentina, one of the co-favorites for the gold medal, will await the outcome of Wednesday's second semifinal match between Nigeria and favored Brazil. The gold medal game will be contested on 3 August in Athens.

Hernan CRESPO became the tournament's leading scorer on Tuesday, scoring both second-half Argentina goals. Argentina missed several scoring opportunities in the first half and held a 14-2 first half shots on goal advantage over Portugal. CRESPO finally broke both the tie and Portugal's defense in the 55th minute with a header beyond the outstretched arms of goalkeeper NUNO. Seven minutes later, CRESPO made it 2-0 on a wide goal shot past NUNO that hit the right goalpost and ricocheted into the net.

Portugal, which will play for the bronze medal on Saturday, had several scoring chances in the second half, including two within 4 minutes by VIDIGAL and NUNO GOMEZ. CRESPO's pair of goals gives him 5 for the tournament.

Wednesday's crowd for the Olympic football tournament topped the 1-million mark in attendance. A total of 1,054,887 fans have attended 30 match dates through Tuesday's semifinal.

Final Score: ARG 2, POR 0.
