Men's Extra Lightweight (60kg)/ Finals

Nomura Nabs Third Olympic Gold for Japan

In the final match of Judo competition in the Centennial Olympic Games, Tadahiro NOMURA (JPN) defeated Girlaino GIOVINAZZO of Italy to win Japan's third gold medal and its eighth overall.

Richard TROUTMANN of Germany decisioned Nikoley OYEGIN of Russia to share the bronze medal with Dorjpalam NARMANDAKH of Mongolia. The Mongolian secured his bronze Final Results medal by winning his match against Narik BAGIROV of Belarus.

Final Results: Gold - Tadahiro NOMURA (JPN); Silver - Girlaino GIOVINAZZO (ITA); Bronze - Dorjpalam NARMANDAKH (MGL), Richard TROUTMANN (GER)


Women's Extra Lightweight (48kg) Finals

KYE Shocks Tamura to Win Olympic Gold

KYE Sun of the People's Democratic Republic of Korea put an abrupt halt to Ryoko TAMURA'S incredible streak of 84 straight victories today in the finals of the Women's 48kg Division. KYE, the 16-year-old gold medalist was able to score early and then maintain her poise in the closing moments of the gold medal match against TAMURA to send shock waves around the judo world. TAMURA had to settle for the silver medal.

Sharing the bronze medal were Yolanda SOLER of Spain andAmarillis SAVON of Cuba.

Final Results: Gold - KYE Sun (PKR); Silver - Ryoko TAMURA (JPN); Bronze - Amarillis SAVON (CUB); Yolanda SOLER (ESP)

Men's Judo Extra Lightweight (60kg) / Preliminaries

Japan Back on Track for the Gold Medal

Todahiro NOMURA of Japan leads the field of four semi-finalists after Friday morning's preliminary rounds of the men's extra lightweight (48kg) division. Joining NOMURA in the hunt for Olympic gold is Girlano GIOVINAZZO of Italy, Richard TRAUTMANN of Germany and Mongolia's Djorpalam NARMANDAKH.

Nazim GUSEYNOV (AZE), the winner at the 1992 Barcelona Games, will now be one of the favorites to come back in the bronze medal rounds. He was upset by Ricardo ACUNA of Mexico in the third round of Friday's competition. KIM Jong-Won of Korea and ACUNA are strong contenders in the repechage matches to determine the bronze medal winners.

Japan's Tamura Aiming for Olympic Gold Medal

Ryoko TAMURA (JPN), lost in the finals of the 1992 Olympics, and appears determined to redeem herself in Atlanta. Rolling through her first round opponents, she is now considered to be a heavy favorite in Friday's finals. She will facing challenger Amaris SAVON (CUB) in the semifinals. The winner of the match will be square off against the winner of the bout between KYE Sun (PRK) and Yolanda SOLER of Spain.

Among those with a hope of an Olympic bronze medal still burning are Hillary Wolf of the USA, Giovanna TORTORA of Italy and France's Sarah NICHILO.

Friday marked the final day of judo competition in the Games of the XXVI Olympiad.
