After playing through a physical scoreless first half, Javier ARNAU converted on a penalty corner play with 20:12 remaining in the match to give Spain a 1-0 upset victory over defending gold medalist Germany at Clark Atlanta University. Spanish goalkeeper Ramon JUFRESA made several key defensive stops throughout the contest, frustrating the German offensive attack. The Germans also frustrated themselves by missing on several scoring opportunities.

"We're quite disappointed with the result of the game, but we had our chances and the Spanish goalie managed quite well," said German captain Klaus MICHLER.
NED vs. USA
United States-Netherlands battle to 1-1 tie. In
a game that lived up to its billing, the United States and the
Netherlands battled to a 1-1 deadlock in the opening match of
women's hockey competition at Morris Brown College. The Netherlands
scored on a goal by Ellen KUIPERS in the 64th minute to give the
Dutch a 1-0 lead. The United States, using intense pressure in
hopes of tying the game, got its wish when Barb MAROIS converted
on a penalty corner play with \ 1:20 remaining in the game. Final

Women's Pool Play Match #2
Australia hangs 4-0 loss on Spain Australia entered the 1996 Olympic Games with rumors circulating that this year's Aussie squad features one of the tournament's highest-powered offenses. On Saturday, Spain found out that the rumors are true. Four different players scored to lead Australia to a 4-0 win in the opening match for both teams. Michelle ANDREWS opened the scoring in the first half and Alyson ANNAN, Rechelle HAWKES, and Lisa POWELL chipped in goals in the second half. Spain managed just two shots on goal against the tough Australian defense. Final Score: AUS 4, ESP 0
Strong second half pushes Korea to 5-0 win:
Different
Olympic Games, different results. In a rematch of the bronze medal
game in Barcelona, Korea exacted revenge for its 1992 loss by
topping Great Britain 5-0 in the final women's hockey match of
the opening day of the 1996 Olympic Games. After clinging to a
1-0 lead at intermission, the Koreans exploded for four goals
in the second half, including two in a 3:00 span. CHO Eun-Jung
scored two goals for the Koreans, including one as the final buzzer
sounded. Final Score: KOR 5, GBR 0
PAK vs. USA
Pakistan Attack Dismantles Americans, 4-0: On the strength of two first-half goals by Kamran ASHRAF, Pakistan grabbed a 3-0 lead at intermission and went on to post a 4-0 men's hockey victory over the United States in Pool A action at Clark Atlanta University. Muhammad SHAHBAZ and Zaman TAHIR also added goals for Pakistan, the reigning World Cup champion and one of the favorites for the gold medal in Atlanta. Pakistan's relentless attack burst any hope the U.S.A. had of winning its first men's hockey game in Olympic history.

ARG vs. GER
Germany Posts 2-0 Win Over Argentina: Victoria SCHMORANZER VAN KOOPEREN scored off of a deflected shot in the first half and Heike LAETZSCH connected for a goal in the second half as Germany pinned a 2-0 loss on Argentina in women's hockey action at Morris Brown College. German goalkeeper Susanne WOLLSCHLAGER was outstanding in goal, making four saves, including the rejection of a penalty stroke by Vanina ONETO that would have given Argentina a 1-0 lead in the first half.

ARG vs. IND
Strong Defense Paces Argentina to 1-0 Win: After allowing its opponents just three goals on its way to the Pan American Games championship, perhaps it's no surprise that Argentina's defense was the main catalyst behind its 1-0 victory over India in the final men's hockey match of the opening day of the 1996 Olympic Games. Pablo LOMBI scored in the 45th minute to give Argentina the lead it would never relinquish. India had many possessions deep in Argentinian territory, but its scoring chances were repeatedly turned back.
