Olympic Shooting Recaps: 21 July (Day 2)
Women's 10m Air Pistol Final Round
Russians Prevail in Air Pistol: After Olga KLOCHNEVA (RUS) clinched the gold, teammate Marina LOGVINENKO (RUS) fought for the silver in an intense shoot-off against Mariya GROZDEVA (BUL). LOGVINENKO looked disappointed with her 10.1 until she saw that her opponent had shot only a 9.9. Jasna SEKARIC (YUG) was a crowd favorite throughout the final, shooting several 10s in a row. After the ninth shot, she was only one tenth of a point behind LOGVENKO and GROZDEVA. The 9.8 she had for her last shot threw her out of medal contention.
Medalists: Gold: Olga KLOCHNE (RUS), 490.1; Silver: Marina LOGVINENKO (RUS), 488.5; Bronze: Mariya GROZDEVA (BUL), 488.5.
Men's Trap Final
DIAMOND Claims Australia's First Medal: Michael DIAMOND (AUS) shot through 150 targets, missing only one, to bring home Australia's first medal of the Olympic Games, which is also the first shooting medal won since 1900. In addition, he set an Olympic Record in both the preliminary event and the final. There was a shootoff between U.S. shooters Lance BADE and Josh LAKATOS to determine the silver. After 28 sudden-death shots, LAKATOS was declared the silver medalist. These three athletes have competed in a large number of finals together and are close friends.
Medalists: Gold: Michael DIAMOND (AUS), 149; Silver: Josh LAKATOS (USA), 147; Bronze: Lance BADE (USA), 147.
