Located in Athens, Georgia, a picturesque Southern college town 66 miles (106 km) northeast of Atlanta, the University of Georgia (UGA) is the site of two venues for the 1996 Olympic Games -- with (soccer) football semifinals and finals to be played in historic Sanford Stadium where the UGA Bulldogs (the school's American football team), have thrilled hundreds of thousands with their gridiron victories; and gymnastics-rhythmic as well as preliminary rounds of volleyball to be competed in the UGA Coliseum, home to the university's men's and women's basketball teams.
