Group A, Match 8

ARG vs. ESP

Four-Minute Span Nets Spain Sole Possession of Top Spot:

In a battle between the surprise leaders in Group A, Spain received 2 second-half goals in a 4-minute span to knock off Argentina, 2-1. Jorge LOMBI gave Argentina a 1-0 lead on a penalty corner shot in the first half, but the second half belonged to the Spaniards. Juan ESCARRE scored in the 61st minute, and Javier ARNAU followed with a goal in the 65th minute. The win moved Spain into sole possession of first place with a 3-0 record, while Argentina fell to 2-1. Final Score: ESP 2, ARG 1.


Group A, Match 9

GER vs. PAK

Germany Downs Pakistan, 3-1:

Germany's Andreas BECKER scored twice on penalty strokes and Sven MEINHARDT added a goal as Germany took care of Pakistan 3-1 on Wednesday night at Morris Brown College. Muhammad KHALID accounted for Pakistan's only score on a penalty corner play in the 62nd minute. The game, featuring two of hockey's most prolific programs, was billed as a battle for not only international bragging rights, but also as a match which might have possible medal round implications. Germany, the defending gold medalist, improved its record to 1-1-1, while Pakistan dropped to 1-2. Final Score: GER 3, PAK 1.


Men's Hockey / Match 7, Pool A

IND vs. USA

India Posts Shutout of United States, 4-0:

Dhanraj PILLAY scored twice, and Ramandeep SINGH and Sanjeev KUMAR contributed a goal each as India pinned a 4-0 loss on the United States in the opening game of Wednesday's men's hockey play at Morris Brown College. The Americans managed just one shot on goal, and were continually frustrated by the Indian defense. The loss was the third consecutive for the United States in Pool A action, while India upped its record to 1-1-1. Final Score: IND 4, USA 0.
