Construction of the Olympic Cauldron

Day 1: 20 May 1996

Centennial Olympic Stadium in the background. Beginning construction of foundation of 111-foot tower which will hold Olympic flame.


Day 2: 21 May 1996

Centennial Olympic Games Cauldron construction.



Day 3: 22 May 1996

The cauldron will rest on this tower.



Day 4: 23 May 1996

Left:Workers unload the center bridge section onto the ground. The Olympic rings will be covered with the gold colored pieces on the right before the bridge is lifted in place on Friday.

Day 5: 24 May 1996

Left: Workers install the coverings on the bridge.

Right: Lifted by two giant cranes the bridge connecting the cauldron tower and the side of Centennial Olympic Stadium moves into place.


Day 6: 29 May 1996

Left: Workers finish up the tower where the cauldron will rest.
Right: The last piece of the tower is lifted into place.
