(22 July 1996; Day 3)
Only three of 16 scheduled Olympic yachting races were completed on Monday before a severe thunderstorm over the Atlantic Ocean forced postponement of the rest of the events at Wassaw Sound near Savannah, Georgia.
Spain's Jose Maria van der PLOEG, the defending gold medalist, edged Yuriy TOKOVY of Ukraine by .08 of a second in the men's single-handed dinghy (Finn). The race was run in 0.4 meter swells and winds of 7.2 knots.
United States skipper Jeff MADRIGALI and his crew of Jim BARTON and Kent MASSEY won the men's open class Soling race by 5.50 seconds over the Russian team of Georgiy SHAYDUKO, Dmitriy SHABANOV and Igor SKALIN. The U.S. trio beat out 21 other boats to take the early lead in Soling.
In men's open class Star, Canada's Ross MACDONALD and Eric JESPERSEN won the race, followed by Torben GRAEL and Marcelo FERRIERA of Brazil. The United States team of Mark REYNOLDS of San Diego and Hal HAENEL of Los Angeles, the defending Star class gold medalists, finished a disappointing fourth.
