(23 July 1996; Day 04)
The United States Softball team has historically been dominating offensively in International play. The first three days of 1996 Olympic Games have done nothing to tarnish that reputation.
In the history of international softball prior to the 1996 Olympic Games, the United States has outscored its opponents by an unbelievable 806-85 margin. The U.S. leads its opponents 446-33, in World Championship competition and 197-7 in Pan American Games play.
The 1996 U.S. Olympic team has lived up to its historical billing. In an Olympic softball competition that has featured dominating pitching, the United States has outscored its opponents 25-1, in the first three games of competition. The 25 runs scored leads the field by far. China and Chinese Taipei have scored the next most runs with eight.
"I am blessed with good offensive balance," said Ralph RAYMOND, U.S. Coach. "I have several table setters in RICHARDSON, SMITH and TYLER. FERNANDEZ, MAHER and CORNELL are all RBI people. Then at the bottom we have a couple would could be table setters or even 'tatter' hitters."
Through the first three games, the United States has averaged 8.33 runs per game. After the first fifteen games of Olympic competition, the teams are averaging 3.00 runs per game as a whole. Without the U.S. totals, the field is averaging 1.84 runs per game.
