The Question

Given your current situation, what can you realistically do to help improve the way the society views this community?

Nicole Asahi

A major problem is stereotypes. Society has certain images of a crossdresser, usually not very flattering ones.

I should try to debunk these stereotypes whenever possible. When transgender issues are touched upon in a conversation, I can offer accurate information and level headed reasoning to expose the fallacies of the stereotypes.

Also, if I am out en femme and "discovered," I should remain calm. I am not doing anything wrong; I do not have to feel embarrassed or guilty. Remaining calm and dignified avoids reinforcing the popular belief that crossdressing is an activity to be ashamed of.

How can a closeted crossdresser improve society's view of our community. Easy. Just smile.

Smile inside when I reflect on my dual nature. Smile when I'm more compassionate than my male friends. Smile when I accept myself as right.

Smile outside when the small touches bring my feminine self to life. Smile when read, displaying my grace and confidence. Smile when meeting others, demonstrating that the world still holds magic and small wonders.

A simple smile. It demonstrates that our community is happy, well-balanced and caring. It's not a lot, but to those who see it, a smile can mean everything.

My position, (currently 3" taller than normal), it seems that society must already be looking up to our community's members. The common thread that runs through our diverse population is recognition that there is more to being human than society's strictly defined gender roles. As a teacher and professional person, I call these roles into question every day and exemplify the great peace, completeness and compassion that our community members know. Whether I am in male or female attire, I represent our community's best traits by setting that example, questioning 'norms' and changing society one person at a time.

The best that I can do to assist our community is to always present myself as a kind and caring person. Treating people with respect is the best way to earn their respect. We are all human beings for all of our differences and similarities. If being accepted by society regardless of differences is our ultimate goal, then why shouldn't we accept people for theirs as well? All my life, I have tried to treat people with respect. I know I can't change the world but I hope that my attitude might influence some of the people I meet.

My decisions are mine. They effect other people, but they're mine alone. No one can make my decisions. I am TG - I am what I am. How I present myself and the issue have to be true to me. But, because they effect how other people view me, the whole issue and everyone in my position, I bear a responsibility to be as honest as I can and as truthful as I need - for me, for all of us.

....Thou canst not be false to any man.
