The phenomenon of transgenderism spans a wide spectrum of
preferences and behaviors. Some of the most common ones are briefly described in general here.
A crossdresser is one who wears the clothing of the opposite sex.
Most psychiatrists no longer consider transvestism or crossdressing to be a mental illness or even an unacceptable behavior. Most crossdressers are normal, heterosexual males, and will marry and father children. Not all crossdressers are heterosexual, of course. The percentage of gay crossdressers is probably reflective of the gay population of society as a whole, about 10%. Most gay crossdressers (in fact, most crossdressers, both gay and straight) are portrayed as drag queens, who use crossdressing as a means of attracting men. While this is the case with some, most gay crossdressers enjoy dressing as the opposite gender for the same reasons as straight ones do. Sexual orientation and crossdressing are two completely separate facets of an individual's personality. The crossdesser is happy to be the sex or gender he or she is. They just like to wear the clothes and take on the personality of the opposite sex. The true crossdresser likes to project the most realistic image that they can.
A transsexual is a person who feels in their heart and soul that
they are the opposite sex male or female trapped in the body of the opposite sex. The transsexual will usually have the desire for sex reassignment surgery. Any consideration of such surgery is preceded by professional consulting and a period of 'real life experience' that is, living and working full time in the opposite gender role. |
