Microsoft SDK for Java

Archiving Applets and Multimedia Files

This procedure will help you create a cabinet file for delivering compressed class and multimedia files to a user's system:

  1. Ensure that the %SDKDIR%\Bin directory, which contains Cabarc.exe, is in your path.

  2. Run Cabarc.exe to build a cabinet containing all your files. See the cabarc section of the Tools Reference for this tool's command-line syntax.

  3. Optionally, digitally sign the cabinet file.

Code-signing is important because it assures users that they can trust your code before placing it on their computers. For more information on trusted code, see Guidelines for Making Java Code Trusted. For information and instructions on signing your code, see Signing a Cabinet File with Java Permissions and http://msdn.microsoft.com/workshop/default.asp This link takes you to a site on microsoft.com.

To access the applet from a Web page, use the <APPLET> tag and the cabbase or cabinets parameters. See Accessing Java Applets for more information.

When creating cabinet files that will be read by the browser from the cabbase parameter, use the default compression mode (MSZIP) and not the LZX (Lempel-Ziv) compression mode. The LZX compression mode is supported by Microsoft® Internet Explorer version 4.0, but not by Internet Explorer 3.x.
