A stream format file contains information a player needs to decode a multicast stream. You only need to generate this file if you want to wait to begin encoding until after the server initiates the connection with the encoder. (If you begin encoding before the server initiates the connection with the encoder, it is not necessary to generate a stream format file, because the server automatically detects the stream format.) After generating the file, you must deliver the file to the server administrator. As part of setting up the multicast announcement for the broadcast, the server administrator identifies the file as containing the stream formats for the stream. A stream format file has an .asf file name extension.
