Christmas Comes..."Holiday Gift Pack" helps spread Xmas cheer.Christmas comes but once a year, as the sages say! Ah, but as prepared as you may be for the onslaught of the holiday season, imagine your surprise when you realize that this article is not about coffee or about Christmasrather, it's a subtle way of explaining the benefits of style sheets! Style sheets are used on this page in many ways. For starters, we use them to set the headline font to 40-point Times. Internet Explorer 3.0 is the only browser that lets you specify text in point sizes. Notice also the amount of space between the lines you are reading. This is known as "leading" and is crucial to creating pleasing text layouts. Thanks to Internet Explorer 3.0, designers can finally use leading on Web pages! We've also indented every paragraph a quarter of an inch, for ease of reading, and given the text a right-hand margin of a quarter of an inch, thus separating the columns of text without padding the table cells. Now we're going to continue this discussion in the right column, which is not really an article about coffee distribution methods. Please look over there now. |
New DistributorsSumatran Sunrise now routed through New Jersey. This is actually not a real article. It is a continuation of the style sheet discussion from the left column. Isn't that devious? Anyway, note that this entire section of the page is indented one-tenth of an inch on both left and right sides. With style sheets, you can finally specify measurements in standard unitsinches, points, or centimetersas well as in pixels. You can even specify font size in inches, points, centimeters, or pixels, if such is your desire! Other style sheet features include the ability to highlight text by placing any graphic or color behind it and the ability to control the color and underlining of links such as this. And many more features are on the way! Finally, not only do style sheets give you much finer control over how pages are laid out, they allow you to centralize your style information. If you are familiar with HTML, open the View menu and click Source. You'll see that the appearance of this entire page can be changed simply by modifying the STYLE section at the top of the document. |
