Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758
DISTRIBUTION
The Asian Elephant once ranged from the Tigris-Euphrates river system in the west, throughout Asia south of the Himalayas, east to China.3 The species now generally occurs as scattered isolated populations within much of the former range, and extends from south India and Sri Lanka eastward through Assam and extreme South Yunnan to Vietnam, and south to the islands of Sumatra and Borneo.
It is uncertain whether the population on Borneo is a relict or the result of re-introduction.11 Feral populations of the Asian elephant exist on some of the Andaman Islands.11
Range States: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam.
