POPULATION

Through effective protection, the total wild population of the Great Indian Rhinoceros has increased from 600-700 individuals in 1975 between 1,806 and 2,091 individuals in 1995 (table 1).9,16 The remaining populations of rhinos are relatively well studied; recent estimates have been established for each group (table 2).

Major population: With at least half of the total population of Great Indian Rhinoceros, Kaziranga National Park (India) remains the key reserve for this species. Strict protection has allowed the rhino population to expand, currently at a rate of approximately 5% per year (table 2.).
