THE SPRINGS CAMPAIGN

This is another important national educational project, launched in 1994 with the financial and scientific support of the mineral water brand SPA Monopole, and involving over 25,000 first-grade schoolchildren. Classes are encouraged by WWF-Belgium to visit freshwater sources (springs and wells) in their area, and given the necessary preliminary information and equipment to go and check the quality of the water (and more specifically, its nitrate content). Furthermore, high school children are encouraged to start their own projects on water quality.

The response of the schools is enthusiastic, and up to more than 800 springs and their nitrate levels have been recorded and mapped after each field campaign. These campaigns take place twice a year -- in March to coincide with World Water Day, and in October. The extensive press coverage of this colourful and lively event also helps increase the public's awareness of the importance and complexity of good management of the fresh water resource.
