THE NORTH SEA PROGRAMME
-
Another long-term programme of WWF-Belgium that started in 1992. Although Belgium has only a tiny section of coastline along
the North Sea, WWF-Belgium has been actively involved in the conservation of this important biotope for many years.
Its two main objectives are to reach an Integrated Coastal Zone Management for the protection, restoration and management of coastal
habitats and to reduce marine pollution coming from land. In this general framework :
- WWF-Belgium supported scientific research on the populations of seabirds, and surveys of beached marine birds and of the
threatened breeding areas for terns along the Belgian coast.
- WWF-Belgium carries out intensive lobbying for the implementation of Integrated Coastal Zone Management, organizes
workshops on this issue and supports local initiatives.
- A feasability study on pesticide reduction was also carried out and the competent authorities have been urged to establish a pesticide
reduction programme through an intensive lobbying campaign in cooperation with other NGO's.
- The public right to know about industrial polluting emissions is essential in order to obtain a substantial reduction in emissions of
toxic pollutants. WWF-Belgium recently carried out a study that shows an alarming lack of public access to emissions information.
Consequently, WWF is lobbying for the establishment of Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers, easily accessible to the public.
- WWF-Belgium is represented in several organisations, international conferences and workshops dealing with the conservation of the
North Sea.
The fresh water biome is currently represented in WWF-Belgium's activities by two major campaigns :
