What is the 1995+ Group?

The WWF 1995 Plus Group is a timber and timber product buyers' group first set up by the World wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in 1991. It is a partnership between WWF and a rapidly growing number of UK companies. There are currently 85 members.

Members of the WWF 1995 Plus Group account for a quarter of the UK's consumption of forest products and together have an annual turnover of over £ 2 billion. They include B&Q, Homebase, Do It All, Wickes, Boots the Chemist, Tarmac, Tetrapack and W H Smith.

What is the 95+ Group's target?

Members of the Group are committed to improving forest management around the world by buying substantial and increasing volumes of their wood and wood product requirements from well-managed forests. They are united in the view that currently only the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) provides an independent system of forest certification to agreed standards which is globally applicable, and which includes product tracing and labelling.

Over 1000 FSC-labelled product lines are now on sales, and the next twelve months will see a marked increase in both the availability and the in-store visibility of such products.

'As our aim is to become a sustainable business we have set ourselves environmental targets, one of which is to use only certified wood in our products and shop fittings by the year 2000. To help us achieve this target The Body Shop has joined the WWF 1995+ Group. Our customers expect the highest environmental and social standards from The Body Shop and we aim not to disappoint them.'
Debbie Budden, The Body Shop

'Both Sainsbury's and Homebase have found membership of the 1995+ Group to be very beneficial.......The buyers' group has become a powerful force in the market place and rarely can so many companies have shared a common environmental goal, that is, FSC endorsed products.'
George White, J Sainsbury plc
