ASSIDOMON AND WWF A PARTNERSHIP FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM
A MESSAGE FROM CLAUDE MARTIN, DIRECTOR GENERAL OF WWF INTERNATIONAL, AND LENNART AHLGREN, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF ASSIDOMON

30 June, 1998

As we enter the 21st Century, the need to develop sustainable industries which match conservation and economic needs is greater than ever. Forests, indisputably, are the earth's most fantastic renewable resource. All our lives are built around the many products these complex and amazing ecosystems provide. WWF and AssiDoman want to ensure that for generations to come, we can wonder at the beauty of forests, marvel at their astonishing biodiversity and benefit from the incredible array of products forests give us.

WWF and AssiDoman share a vision. We believe that a partnership between the world's largest independent conservation organisation and one of Europe's leading forest products companies can achieve a future for forests where a significant part are protected and the rest is used responsibly and sustainably for the benefit of Man.

That is why WWF and AssiDoman are forming an exciting new partnership to find solutions to the problems of loss of forest quality in Europe and global deforestation. As two major organisations with a very real interest in forest conservation, we believe that together we can make a difference.

Both WWF and AssiDoman share common goals. We believe that, besides ensuring enough forest lands as protected areas, promoting and developing environmentally sound forestry practices throughout Europe, with independent certification by the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) is an essential way forward. In order to safeguard the forests' future and produce the paper and wood products which are an essential part of every day life, a partnership between conservation and industry is of paramount importance.

By working together, WWF and AssiDoman over the next three years will be setting out to persuade timber producers throughout Europe (and beyond) to produce more FSC certified timber and adopt less damaging, more sustainable methods. This is an incredibly exciting and ambitious task but we believe WWF and AssiDomdn, working together in a unique partnership, can more than meet the challenge.

The partnership has already identified a number of key areas for our activities to take place and over the coming months we will ensure that everybody within both organisations is fully abreast of our mutual plan of action.

WWF and AssiDoman are producing a brochure which explains why we are the right organisations for this job and how we are going to achieve our goals.

Together we can make the difference and leave all of our children a living planet. We hope we can count on your support
