CAPTIVE BREEDING

At the end of 1992, there were 60 males, 94 females and one animal of unknown sex (106 captive bred) of the Bornean subspecies in 36 collections, and 83 males, 131 females (165 captive bred) of the Sumatran subspecies in 47 collections. This is a species total of 645 animals (492 captive bred) in which 142 collections are recorded which include subspecific hybrids.11 The studbook is maintained by Zoo-Atlanta, Atlanta/Fulton Zoo, 800 Cherokee Avenue SE, Atlanta, Georgia 30315 -1440, USA.11

A Species Survival Masterplan for orang-utans in North America is managed by Zoo-Atlanta, USA. Analysis of population genetics and demographics has been employed to maintain a viable captive orang-utan population. The Plan aims to maintain 90% of the pre sent genetic variability of both subspecies through the next 100 years.18
