DISTRIBUTION

Until around 1600, the Great Indian Rhinoceros occurred in suitable habitat across the entire northern part of the Indian sub-continent from Pakistan to southern parts of Bhutan and Nepal, east to Myanmar and parts of Southeast Asia.11 By the middle of this century, rhinos were restricted to a few protected areas, and were dependent upon conservation measures.8 Currently the species survives in a few small populations situated in the borderlands of Northeast India, Bhutan and Nepal.6 The Great Indian Rhinoceros is now the most numerous of the three Asian species.

Range States: Bhutan, India, Nepal.
