LEGAL STATUS

The species is totally protected by law in Indonesia and Malaysia, both of which are signatories to the 1973 Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The orang-utan was listed on Appendix I of CITES in 1977. Trade in it or its products is therefore subject to strict regulation and trade for primarily commercial purposes is banned. Despite this legislation the illegal traffic of orang-utans has escalated between Indonesia and Taiwan, especially during the 199 0s.1
