Denmark Announces New Gift

Since 1990, Denmark's goal has been to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% in 2005 compared to 1988 levels. In 1996, the government presented it's latest update of its overall energy plan entitled "Energy 21." This new plan re-states the 20% cut in 2005 target, and establishes "a new framework for energy planning" aimed at achieving a 50% reduction of CO2 by 2030 compared to 1990-levels.

The 1996 plan introduces a wide array of instruments - some implemented later, some not - and establishes a national target for renewable energy sources of 12-14% of total gross energy consumption in 2005. In order to achieve this, the government intends to continue the development of renewable energy sources with the aim of increasing the share of renewable energy sources in total energy supplies by 1% each year. This also applies beyond 2005 eventually leading to a renewable energy sources coverage of 35% of energy supply in 2030.
