LEGAL STATUS

Asian Elephants occur in many protected areas and are legally protected in most countries of their range. The species is included in Appendix I of the 1973 Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Trade in the species or its products (including ivory) is subject to strict regulation by ratifying nations, and trade for primarily commercial purposes is banned.
