Climate Change Endangers Nature
|
|
Introduction:
The world's national parks and protected areas are supposed to provide sanctuary from
the ravages of humankind's assault on nature, but no park boundary or
conservation law can protect an ecosystem from climate change. A new report
by the Worldwide Fund For Nature (WWF) shows that this insidious and
invisible killer is invading our most cherished natural areas, even as
governments stand by and debate the costs of action.
The giant pandas of Wolong in China, the grizzly bears of America's Yellowstone, and the tigers
of India's Kanha National Park are among the animals at risk from global
warming. Furthermore, WWF research has identified dozens of famous
protected areas that are highly vulnerable to environmental damage caused
by rapid climate change, including Coto Donana in Spain, Majella in Italy,
Kafue Flats in Zambia, Hol Chan Marine Reserve in Belize, Kakadu in
Australia, Sagarmatha in Nepal, La Amistad in Costa Rica, Moremi Game
Reserve in Botswana, and the Florida Everglades in the United States.
