The total Brown Bear population in wider Europe has been estimated at 46,000.12 A total of between 130 and 200 bears are estimated to live in the four fragmented populations remaining in western Europe. National estimates are not yet available for all parts of the former USSR, former Yugoslavia, or the two parts of former Czechoslovakia.12

Major population: There are an estimated 35,000 Brown Bears in Russia west of the Urals, and this is by far the largest national Brown Bear population in Europe. No information is available on areas of key importance for bears.12
