Field training: Rwanda

The training of PNV guards, guides and ORTPN HQ staff was outlined in IGCP Update 2, and covered the following topics:

  • ecology of PNV;

  • biology of mountain gorilla;

  • health aspects associated with gorilla tourism;

  • role of a guide in support to gorilla tourism;

  • importance of environmental awareness;

  • working with communities adjacent to protected areas;

  • demining activities in PNV;

  • a field visit to two other protected areas in Rwanda: Akagera NP (savanna in NE Rwanda) and Nyungwe Forest Reserve (part of the afromontane forest habitat chain that includes the PNV and SW Rwanda). This exposed PNV staff to different ecosystems as well as a range of conservation, research and tourism programmes. For many, it was their first trip outside of PNV.
