Project Executant for the Development of Protected Areas in the Forests of the South East
The Cameroon Programme Office (CPO) of WWF - World Wide Fund for Nature - is presently operating 25 conservation projects, focusing on forests, species and wetlands, with the aim of improving sustainable management of natural resources and socio-economic development. The various projects vary in character from studies and project development to integrated conservation and development, awareness, capacity building and policy development projects. This project aims at the creation and management of three protected areas in the Lobeke, Boumba-Bek and Nki forests which cover 6,380kmē of biologically important moist evergreen and semi-deciduous closed forest also including swamps and wet savanna. Much of the large mammal population is still intact with high densities of elephants, western lowland gorillas, chimpanzees and bongos. WWF-CPO is seeking a project executant who will have overall responsibility for the coordination of conservation and management activities in three proposed protected areas. This project is funded by GEF and WWF. The post is to be based on site. The contract is for one year with the possibility of renewal.
Duties:
- coordinate the remaining activities (biological and socio-economic surveys) required to collect data necessary for the development of management plans for each of the three areas, the treatment and analysis of the results thereof and the development of draft management plans for each area;
- contribute to the official gazettement of the three areas;
- coordinate the definition of appropriate and sustainable management mechanisms for the three areas, in close cooperation with local communities and governmental and non-governmental partners, and the implementation thereof;
- coordinate all necessary research activities in the three areas and the development and implementation of long-term monitoring programmes for each of the areas;
- under the supervision of the WWF Regional Coordinator for the Central Region, ensure the project's compliance with technical and financial reporting and monitoring/evaluation requirements.
Requires:
- advanced degree relating to tropical ecology and/or management of forest resources;
- minimum 5 years experience in the development and implementation of forest management strategies and in park management, with strong background in community-based resources management;
- management experience and excellent communication skills;
- fluency in written and spoken French and working knowledge of English;
- computer-literacy;
- willingness and ability to work in a remote area;
- availability within three months.
