The Mongolian government has pledged to protect 30 per cent of its territory, an area of 49 million hectares, by the year 2010.
This will include part of the Siberian coniferous taiga forest - the world's largest forest system - and the most extensive prairie grasslands left on Earth.

WWF is determined that the
remaining days of the 20th century
will be the time when people finally decide to stop wreaking havoc on planet Earth, and take firm action to build
a better world for future generations.
As part of The Living Planet Campaign, WWF has drawn up a list of 200 ecoregions - The Global 200 - that are critical to the conservation of the world's biological diversity. If these areas can be conserved, there is hope for the natural world as we know it, and it is on
these regions that WWF is concentrating the majority of its efforts.
To succeed, we need the commitment
of governments, the business community, and ordinary people. Throughout
this report we honour just a few of the pledges WWF has received to
further its work to save the planet - we term these Gifts to the Earth. WWF
is appealing for everyone to take
their own affirmative action.
We really need your help.
