Number of members:
84
Main business areas:
Timber retailers, DIY chains, Timber importers.
Commitment:
The members actively support the FSC international system for the certification of timber and forests, or any equivalent system recognised by the WWF, based on standards of "sustainable forest management" and taking account of economic, ecological and social aspects of forest management.
The members undertake to progressively strengthen the proportion of certified timber in their transactions. The objective is for 50% of the timber traded to be certified by the year 2000. Above all, this will involve members exerting pressure on their suppliers, either directly or through their trading partners, in order to obtain certified timber. They will also make efforts to increase the awareness of their customers both of the existence of the present commitment and of the availability of certified timber.
The long term objective is to trade only timber that can be shown to have originated from well-managed forests, based on the independent monitoring of forest management by properly accredited certification bodies.
The members undertake to provide the WWF every six months with a report detailing the efforts they have made to reach the objective and specifying the quantities of wood and their origin, as well as progress made in the area of certification and the objectives to be attained. This information will be handled confidentially.
The members of the Club '97, or their representative, will meet at least twice a year with the WWF in order to conduct an assessment of the progress made.
The members undertake to place labels only on timber from forests that have been certified according to a process of independent and international certification that has been recognised by the WWF. They will not place any other label on the timber in order to avoid confusion on the part of the consumer.
