Tremarctos ornatus (F.G. Cuvier, 1825)
POPULATION
The mostly isolated and inhospitable habitat of the Spectacled Bear makes surveys and estimations of population size difficult. Accurate national population estimates are currently unavailable. Surveys within areas known to hold bears have revealed that populations are larger than is generally reported; surveys have been completed in southern Bolivia, Peru, north-eastern Ecuador, and parts of Colombia, Venezuela and Argentina.3 On the results of these surveys, it has been estimated that there are a minimum of 10,000 bears and that the true number could be several times higher.6
Major population: The most extensive and intact bear populations remain on the eastern slope of the Oriental (Andes) Range in Ecuador, Peru and northern Bolivia.3
