The Cameroon Programme Office (CPO) of WWF - World Wide Fund for Nature - is presently operating 25 conservation projects, focusing on forests, species and wetlands, with the aim of improving sustainable management of natural resources and socio-economic development. The various projects vary in character from studies and project development to integrated conservation and development, awareness, capacity building and policy development projects. Following the recent adoption of a restructuring plan along the recommendations of a mid-term evaluation, the Korup Project, financed by the European Union and WWF, will be developing a number of activities aimed at the conservation and protection of the large range of fauna and flora species present in Korup National Park, Cameroon's only rainforest National Park. These activities include coordinating the development of the Park's management plan and of resettlement programmes, as well as promoting and implementing community-based and sustainable management of natural resources. WWF-CPO will undertake the implementation of a mid-term strategic action plan defined during the restructuring process and is seeking a Project Manager who will be responsible for the overall coordination of the technical and financial management of the Project and ensure control of all financial commitments and expenditures in accordance with budgets and procedures. The post is to be based in Mundemba (South West Province). The contract is for one year, renewable.
Duties:
- ensure proper management, coordination and administration of the project on a day-to-day basis; ensure the development of operational strategies to meet objectives and results set out in relevant project document, coordinate the activities of all units and ensure proper coordination with governmental and non-governmental entities acting in the area, be responsible for the hiring and evaluation of non-governmental national staff, approve terms of reference and coordinate the work of consultants;
- ensure adequate and timely technical and financial reporting and coordinate the development of appropriate monitoring systems to measure the project's performance;
- maintain good relationships with neighboring communities and local authorities in the Project's area;
- liaise with the WWF-CPO Central Office and the Project's Steering Group to plan and implement the project;
- assist WWF-CPO and the Steering Group in the preparation of a project proposal in order to secure long-term funding for the Project.
Requires:
- extensive experience in the management and administration of large projects at the senior level, including minimum ten years experience in West or Central Africa, preferably with experience in dealing with large donors such as USAID or the European Union;
- fluency in English with good knowledge of French;
- computer-literacy;
- familiarity with theories and practice of development;
- highly-developed management and diplomatic skills;
- willingness and ability to live and work in a remote area.
