Georgia
The Caucasus is a region of outstanding biodiversity and one of WWF's
Global 200 Ecoregions. In order to conserve the outstanding natural
sites of the country, WWF is focussing its work to establish
protected areas and multiple use areas with sustainable
development. Georgia government has decided to set aside 20% of the
country as protected areas by the year 2000. This includes the
development and implementation of management plans for specific
protected areas, the training of staff, the improvement of protected
area legislation, and support to NGOs to improve public involvement
and participation in the planning and implementing conservation and
sustainable development activities such as: controlled use of
medicinal plants, supply of alternative energy resources, erosion
control. In addition, environmental education activities have been
developed to raise awareness of conservation issues, especially in
and around priority protected areas. This involves the establishment
of education centres in Kazbegi, Bakuriani and Tbilisi.
