Survey and Identification of Conservation Areas and Critical Habitats
( Project BT0013 )
his project has provided technical assistance over the last three years to FSD to help establish an effectively managed system of protected areas, create a database on the wildlife and ecology of Bhutan, and propose procedures for monitoring the use of Bhutan's natural resources. With technical assistance from NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center, in the US, surveys were conducted and a database for subsequent planning was established. Rapid ecological surveys were conducted in Thrumsing La National Park, Phipsoo Wildlife Sanctuary and Khulongchhu Wildlife Sanctuary.
A GIS database using PC ArcInfo has made it possible to monitor the use of natural resources and conservation status of Bhutan's protected areas, forests, water catchments, endangered and rare species, and habitat types. The database allows the rapid manipulation of data for specific outputs such as protected area management plans and assessing the impact of various land uses on wildlife.
