CAPTIVE BREEDING
The captive breeding of the Spectacled Bear is co-ordinated by an International Studbook produced by The Lincoln Park Zoological Gardens, Chicago. This gives the lineage of captive individuals and possible pairings in future breeding efforts. In 1992, there were 87 males, 78 females and 9 Spectacled Bears of unknown sex in 65 institutions worldwide.5
A captive breeding programme is being initiated in Venezuela with the intent of reintroducing bears to augment wild bear stock in the Cordillera Merida and to preserve genetic diversity.6
