Large Colonies of the world-wide endangered Dalmatian Pelican and European White Pelican breed in the Danube Delta.
WWF aims to stop the increasing destruction of the Danube, to protect the remaining natural areas, to preserve biodiversity, and to reduce everyday pollution which threatens the drinking water supply for millions of people.

WWF projects in Germany, Austria, the Slovak and Czeck Republics, Hungary and Bulgaria, as well as in the Danube Delta, demonstrate model forest and meadow management, ensure the survival of endangered and threatened species of animals and plants, restore drained wetland areas and demonstrate and promote sustainable economic development. The projects are carried out in cooperation with governments, WWF national and regional offices, and local partner organizations. The successful ten year fight to designate the "Nationalpark Donau-Auen" east of Vienna is a milestone in the Green Danube campaign. With the opening of the park in October 1996 an important part of the Danube has been preserved. Preservation of further key areas are now needed.
