THE FORESTS & TIMBER CAMPAIGN

A major campaign of WWF-Belgium launched end 1994 and due to continue and expand in the years to come.

Its main objective is to reach sustainable management of the world's forests through:

  • the development of forest certification and timber labeling procedures adapted to Belgium, within the general framework of the International Forest Stewardship Council.

  • an intensive lobbying of the timber trade sector in Belgium. About half of the timber importers and wholesalers in Belgium have already agreed to join the 'Club97', whose members have undertaken to sell timber from sustainable sources from 1 January, 1997.

  • a major information and awareness campaign aimed at the general public and professional timber users.

Recently, a joint mission of WWF-Belgium and representatives of the Belgian timber trade sector made a field visit to Cameroon, a major timber exporter to Belgium. The visit aimed at creating a working group in that country that influences the authorities and all parties concerned with the timber industry into developing a labelling system for Cameroon timber.
