Mongolia

Mongolia is at the ecological crossroads of Asia, where the great Siberian taiga forest meet the vast Asian steppes, and the arid expense of the Great Gobi Desert. It is a mountainous country and includes 2 of WWF's Global 200 Ecoregions, the Altai-Sayan with the Great Lakes Basin and the Daurian Steppe. WWF supports the establishment of a system of protected areas and was instrumental to help increase the coverage to 11% since 1992. This includes 5 new national parks. Recommendations for 4 more national parks are in preparation for the Daurian region and the Khangai range. WWF is also contributing to the conservation of endangered species such as the snow leopard and the Mongolian Saiga antelope. All activities are developed and implemented in cooperation with local people under the auspices of the Mongolian government. New initiative involve capacity building programmes for NGOs education and public awareness activities. Recommendations for setting aside 30% of Mongolia by 2015 as conservation areas or biosphere reserves have been adopted by the government.
