MAIN FOCUS

The WWF Indonesia Programe's primary focus is on providing assistance to the expansion and strengthening of Indonesia's protected areas system. This is the goal it established in its new Long Term Strategic Action Plan. It is also working towards the enhancement of scientific knowledge regarding Indonesia's biodiversity and human-nature interaction among traditional communities.

Reflecting the global trend in conservation, its focus is on involving the local people in the management and preservation of natural resources. Its Strategic Plan emphasizes the need to encourage greater environmental understanding among the population. Thus, local communities play an important role in the development and implementation of WWF Indonesia's field activities. This approach inculcates an understanding of conservation issues among the people and stresses how sustainable use of natural resourc es can be of most benefit to the community.

Although many of the Indonesia Programme's projects are based in national parks and reserves in remote areas of the country, other activities are directed towards increasing awareness among Indonesia's urban population and developing a "conservation cultu re". It conducts information and outreach programmes based in its programme office in Jakarta. Policy makers, government personnel and people from the media participate in the learning process and are involved in the organization's concerns, both formal ly and informally.
