This April the Supreme Court of India has admitted a petition to save the tiger from extinction. The petition, filed by Mr Navin Raheja, a member of the Tiger Crisis Cell of the Environment and Forest Ministry, states that on an average one tiger is poached every day in India and if no effective steps are taken, the tiger could get extinct in the next couple of years. The petition maintains that Project Tiger has failed to protect the tiger. The tiger being at the apex of the country's biodiversity, its extinction will lead to ecological decay that will affect future generations. An interim order has recently been issued to state governments, asking them to protect the tiger more effectively.
