INTERNATIONAL CONTRIBUTION

As a member of the international WWF family, WWF-Belgium also contributes financially to WWF-International's activities. In the 1994-1995 period, over 12 million Belgian francs were channelled to WWF-International to be dispatched to different international projects.

WWF-Belgium is also represented in many regional or international conferences, workshops and organizations.

WWF European Policy Office: WWF-Belgium has provided accommodation for over five years to the WWF European Policy Office whose main tasks are the coordination of European WWF national organizations activities, lobbying of European institutions and fundraising.

The decision in 1989 to open a European office for WWF in Brussels was a recognition that more and more environmental policy is being decided at the European Union level. Particularly important for the environment are EU policies on agriculture and regional development, which together account for 80 per cent of the annual EU budget. The WWF European Policy Office organizes conferences and briefings in the European Parliament and the European Commission to try to influence policies in ways that promote sustainable development.

TRAFFIC Europe: TRAFFIC Europe is part of the international TRAFFIC Network, WWF and IUCN's joint wildlife trade monitoring programme. TRAFFIC, with global expertise on wildlife trade issues, is active on five continents. Its main objective is to monitor, investigate and report on trade in wild animals and plants to ensure that threatened species are identified and protected.

TRAFFIC Europe's regional office, based in Brussels, has received comprehensive assistance from WWF-Belgium. The regional office of TRAFFIC Europe supervises and coordinates the activities of National Representatives in the Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy and (more recently) Russia.

In Belgium, TRAFFIC assists the authorities and enforcement agencies responsible for the national and EU trade in wild species of fauna and flora, and provides training and educational materials. In addition, the TRAFFIC Europe office in Brussels collaborates with the European Commission in improving EU wildlife trade laws and their implementation.
