NewsTicker | Troubleshooting: |
Q: The Ticker just "Connecting...!" or stays black. It never gets any real data. | A: You must use the Windows 95 or NT TCP/IP stack and Dialer. The NewsTicker doesn't support older 16-bit TCP/IP stacks and dialers. Setup the new stack and dialer using either the Microsoft "Plus!" pack, Microsoft's "Internet Starter Kit", or by downloading the Microsoft "Internet Explorer" (recommended).
If you are connected through a proxy server, and use Netscape 3.0x, the ticker can pick up your proxy setting automatically from Netscape. If you use Netscape Communicator or Navigator 4.0, then you must enter your proxy information into the ticker's "proxy" tab in the "preferences" dialog. Please note: The NewsTicker only supports "manual" proxies in Netscape. If the proxy info in Netscape is set to "automatic", you will need to get the "manual" name/port of your proxy from your IS/IT folks. Please also note if you use a SOCKS server, IE 3.0 or later must be your default browser. |
Q: How do I configure the NewsTicker? | Right-click anywhere on the Ticker to display the ticker menu. From here, select 'Preferences'. |
Q: When I double-click on a story in the Ticker, nothing happens. I don't see the full text for the story. | A: Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser version 3.0 Beta 1 and below didn't support the commands necessary for external programs to load pages. This has been fixed in version 3.0 Beta 2 and later. If you have this problem, you will need to either use Netscape or upgrade to the latest Internet Explorer version. |
Q: "Update Now' in the Ticker Menu is disabled. Why? | This means that the ticker is currently fetching your news, or that it has received an error it can't recover from. If your news isn't updating, you may need to exit the ticker, and re-run if you have a dial-up connection. |
Q: "The Ticker runs too slow or is "jerkey". Why? | You can set or clear the "Smooth Scrolling" option in the "preferences" dialog box. With "Smooth Scrolling" on, text in the NewsTicker is always incremented by only one position each time, and the display routine is called more often to increase the speed. This takes more CPU cycles, but produces a smoother display. If you disable "Smooth Scrolling", the display routine is called less often but the increment is the speed setting. This takes less CPU time and can be used if you notice that your machine or the ticker slows down (especially at higher speed settings and on slower machines). |
NewsTicker | Tips: |
You can make the NewsTicker run in either the Windows 95/NT 4.0 Taskbar or in its own window:
If you are NOT running IE 4.0: Just select "Taskbar Dock/UnDock" from the NewsTicker popup context menu (right-click on the NewsTicker). Once the NewsTicker is "undocked", it defaults to "Fit to Caption", a mode that puts it in the top-right of the screen where it will sit in the caption bar of maximized windows. You can modify the behavior of the undocked mode: "Always on Top" will force it to "float" above all other windows. You can also "Glue" it to the Windows desktop, and it will stay beneath all other windows. If you turn off all the above options, you get a resizeable window that you can easily size and place anywhere on the screen. You can then turn on the "Always on Top" or "Glue to Desktop" modes and it will run at your new size and position. If you ARE running IE 4.0: Just click on the slider to the left of the ticker and drag it out over your desktop (you may have to minimize other applications first). This will display the ticker in its own window. You can resize and position it anywhere on the screen you'd like. |
The ticker will stay up-to-date with the selections you make on your personal news Web Page. Just make whatever changes you want on your personal news page and the ticker will automatically stay in sync, the next time it updates. (Or select 'Update Now' to sync-up immediately.) |
You can "drag" the ticker with the mouse in either direction. This is helpful if something you want to see went by too fast. The ticker will continue to run in the direction you last moved it. |
You can quickly move to the next "topic" (eg, Sports, Weather, Headlines) in the current subject by clicking on the 'Next Topic' button. It is the arrow button on the left side of the ticker. If you'd just like to skip to the next "story", then right-click the Next Topic button. |
You can control the size (width) of the ticker in the Windows 95 or NT taskbar. Click on and drag the "slider" (the small vertical bar at the far-left side of the ticker) to the left or right to make the NewsTicker the size you'd like. If you are not running IE 4.0, it will shut down and restart at the selected size. |
If you use a dialup connection, you can select the "Hangup Modem after Refresh" option in the NewsTicker 'Preferences' dialog box to force the ticker to hangup the connection when it has retrieved your data. It will only hangup if the ticker initiates the connection (dials your ISP). If you are already connected when you run the ticker, this option will have no affect. (Note, it will dial without the usual confirmation and status dialog boxes.) Important: Do NOT check this option if you use a LAN or Direct connection! |
