SCOL Worlds
The interfaces
and features you will find on SCOL sites may vary, however, when you
enter a SCOL site, a window will usually open with a main screen from
which you can visualize the world and move around within the site. Below
this window, you will habitually find the general chat box. Next to
this box is the list of users you can chat to, a pager function to chat
with the person of your choice in private, a photo of your avatar, i.e.
your personal representation in the SCOL environments, and various other
options depending on the world you are visiting.
To move about,
you must activate the "move" mode before. To do so, click on the main
screen. You then have two possibilities for moving :
- Left-click on
the main 3D screen and, keeping the button pressed, drag the mouse
in the direction in which you wish to move.
- You can also
use the keyboard. Use the arrow keys to move forwards, backwards,
left and right.By
pressing the Ctrl key + the arrow keys, you can move - horizontally
or vertically - linearly. Pressing Shift + the vertical arrow keys
controls your field of vision, for example, to look up.
There are a number
of ways of communicating in the SCOL worlds :
- You can chat
with those users displayed next to the main screen using the chat
function by typing your message in the entry field in the bottom part
of the chat box. Once you enter your message, it is immediately displayed
to the right of your name in the chat box display window, and is sent
to all those surrounding you.
- You can send
private, instant messages to any person also inside a world on the
SCOL sites that include this feature. To do so, click on the pager
button. The list of visitors inside the world is subsequently displayed.
In front of each name you will see a small icon. If this icon represents
an envelope, this means that the person has sent you a message. Double-click
on their name to display the message. Similarly, to send this person
a message, double-click on their name; an entry window is displayed.
Click on it to activate it, enter your text and click on "Send".
- Some worlds include
an audio chat system. To use this system, you must activate the listening
function by pressing the speaker button, then click on the mic key
when you speak.
Your avatar is
your personal representation in the world. It is visible in the small
window adjacent to the main screen. You can modify it according to the
list of avatars available in the selected world. To do so, click on
"Modify" next to the photo. In the window subsequently displayed, click
on "Change".
