Speed up Remote Control
On the server side (Remote Control Server = User Machine)
The worst speed problem is the Windows video mode.
65K (or more) colors screens are usually responsible for quite long response time.
If possible, set the Windows Video mode to 256 colors (8 bits color).
Typically, users don't need more for their usual tasks.
Moreover, if the slave machine is a server, it does certainly not need more than 256 colors!
The problem with 65K (or more) colors screen is that it takes a lot of time to convert it to a 256 (or less) colors screen
Unless the slave machine is a high performance machine (ie: P300 + a good video card/drivers),
you will notice a significant speed difference between 256 colors and 65K colors screens
Set the Windows desktop wallpaper to "Nothing".
Avoid having bitmaps on the screen as possible (especially "nice" bitmaps with a lot of different colors),
because they slow down the process.
On the client side (Remote Control = Administrator Machine)
Keep the "Internet Mode" option checked in the Network Options menu.
In very rare cases, you may notice the speed increases with the option UN-checked.
This option significantly reduce the traffic.
In the View, color menu, select the 16 colors mode or the 256 colors mode
(Remark: if the slave machine is on a LAN, and has a 256 or more colors video setup, and/or has a high resolution (1024x768 or more), try to select the 256 colors mode. It may be faster than the 16 colors mode)
Use a WinNT 4 machine if possible, since multi-threading support is more robust, and usually gives better results...
Use a P200 or better machine if possible. (P300 + good video card + 17" display are highly recommended...)
Avoid the "stretch mode", which may take a lot of resource.
Put the "Progress Line" on, and check the statistics displayed in the bottom of the Remote Control window.
The statistics show the number of bytes retrieved for a screen + the elapsed time (in milliseconds) for a screen. This information should help you selecting the fastest "color mode".
Avoid selecting the 65K color mode in the View/Color menu of Remote Control... unless you are watching nice pictures on the remote machine...
(Remark: if you activate the 65K color mode, make sur that your PC is configured for 65K colors or more)
If you select the 256 color mode in Remote Control, it is usually recommended yo configure Windows for 65K colors or more (the reason is management of system palettes, which slows down processing)
