World Online Regular subscribers have 20MB disk space at their disposal, which can be used to put a personal homepage on the web. World Online Lite subscribers have 5MB disk space at their disposal. Each homepage is allowed a maximum data traffic of 1GB per month. When the 1GB limit is exceeded, the homepage in question will be shut down for the rest of the calendar month. Should this occur, you may want to consider a different form of subscription. Furthermore, if you use a private account, you are not allowed to place information of a commercial nature on your homepage. If you wish to use your homepage for commercial purposes, you will have to switch to a business account. You do not have write permission for the CGI-bin. You are, however, able to use the CGI-scripts provided for, like our mail form script (see Using forms on your homepage).

2.     How to publish a personal homepage at World Online?

Make sure your starting page is called index.html.

Please check your links to pictures and HTML documents on the proper use of capitals and small letters. Unix is a case sensitive language: under Unix index.HTML is not the same as index.html.

Start an FTP session (for instance with WS_FTP (PC) or Fetch (Macintosh)) to your homepage server. You will find the name of the server in your subscription confirmation.

Once you are logged in, you will automatically enter your home directory. Create a directory called www here. Make sure to enter the name in small letters.

Put your HTML documents and possible pictures in this directory.

The Internet address (URL) where the HTML page can be found is http://your_homepage_server/~user_name/, in which your_homepage_server must be replaced by your homepage server and user_name by your own user name.

You are now ready to submit your page to different search engines. Almost every search engine site will offer you the possibility to submit your homepage address.

Your page will automatically be added to the overview of all homepages available at World Online. However, this may take a while.

3.     What is a web page and how can I make my own?

Top of page

HTML is the language that is used to write web pages. It is not a programming language. It uses tags, that inform your browser on how your page must be displayed.

HTML can be generated in many different ways. You can write it from scratch, with a text editor like Notepad (IBM) or SimpleText (Macintosh). Besides, most word processors can save your documents as HTML pages. For instance all Microsoft Office 97 products, like Word and Excel offer this feature, as does WordPerfect 7. For the Microsoft Office 95 products you can download a so-called assistant from the Microsoft site. This is an add-on that enables you to save your documents in HTML format.

Apart from the possibilities mentioned above, you can make use of specially designed programs to develop your HTML pages, the so-called HTML editors. During the last two years, quite a number of these programs were marketed, among which several as shareware. Basically, these editors can be divided into two categories. The first category is WYSIWYG: What You See Is What You Get. This means, that everything you see in your editor, will look exactly the same in your browser. Unfortunately, this is not always completely the case: therefore, we recommend you to test any page you write in a real browser, like for instance Internet Explorer. The second category is not WYSIWYG, but code based. This type of editor only displays the HTML code and does not attempt to show it the way your browser will. You will have to test the code in a browser. For examples of HTML editors, see the end of this document, under HTML editors.

4.     A counter on your homepage.

Top of page

World Online offers you the possibility to put a counter on your homepage. It will track the number of hits for your page. In other words, the number of people that have visited your page. If you would like to use a counter on your homepage, you will need to add the following code to your HTML document:

In your HTML document, add an image link to:

IMG SRC="http://home.worldonline.cz/cgi-bin/nph-counter?width=6&link=login_name/index.html"

Please use your user name, instead of "login_name". In this example, we presume you will want to add the counter to index.html, your first page.

The "width" stands for the number of digits the counter can display. If you want to be able to register up to 10,000 hits, use a width of 4, for 100,000 use 5 and so on.

Please note, the link must be unique, and therefore a derivation of your URL.

This is an example of what your HTML document should contain.
if your user name would be ajjanssen and you would want to put the counter on the page index.html

5.     Using forms on your homepage.

Top of page

You can offer visitors of your pages the possibility to send you information by means of a form. In order to use this feature, you will have to add HTML code, in which you enter a link to the CGI script that will handle the delivery of the information. For more information on how to write the code for a form, see the form page.

You can link to the CGI script by using the following code:
action="http://home.worldonline.cz/cgi-bin/mailform" method="GET"

This script expects a number of obligatory components in your form, using the following names:

USER: this is the e-mail address to which the information will be sent.

SUBJECT: this will be the subject of the e-mail message that will be generated.

LINK: this is a link to the page the user of your form will see, after clicking the submit button.

These components can be text fields or hidden entries, or even of another nature. Please make sure to write USER, SUBJECT and LINK in capitals.

6,     HTML editors.

As mentioned earlier, HTML editors can be divided in WYSIWYG editors and code based editors. A number of editors is listed here, but please note, this is merely a selection. Some of these programs, the ones that are shareware, may be found on our FTP server. You can find them in the category Software. If you are looking for shareware programs that are not available on our FTP site, please try www.download.com or tucows.worldonline.cz.
