What is Downloading? and how do I go about it?

Downloading means copying data (which can be programs, pictures etc.) from one computer to another. Clicking a link on a web page is just one way of starting a download. Below, a demonstration of a download is given.

  • After clicking a link to start the download, the window shown here on the left will appear asking you what you want to do with the downloaded file. By clicking OK, you agree to save the file to your hard disc and the file on the remote computer will be transferred to your computer.

  • Next, you will be asked where on your computer you would like to save the file. You may choose any location on your hard disc and continue by clicking Save. The folder My Documents was chosen in the example shown here on the left.

  • Now the download will commence and data on the remote computer will be transferred to your own. This window will give you the following information:
  • Approximate time remaining: - The duration of the download.
  • Downloading to: - The location where the file will be stored.
  • Transfer rate: - The download speed.

  • The download has completed, the file is now saved to the folder you indicated as its destiny. To open the file, you can click Open at the bottom of the screen. You can click Open Folder to go to the folder where the file is stored.
