Getting started
with the iGetter Download Manager
All you need to do to install
iGetter is simply start it up. iGetter will check for its components every
time it is launched, and automatically reinstall anything that's missing.
After starting, iGetter is ready to download. Just insert a URL and iGetter
will make everything possible to download your (MP3, hqx, sit, etc.) file
downloads.
Integration with Browsers
iGetter integrates with Internet browsers, catching
mouse clicks of hyperlinks. iGetter uses the plug-in technology for
integration, that every URL with defined in the preferences file extension
will be caught by iGetter. To set the file type that iGetter will download,
you must define its extension in the 'Integration' panel in iGetter Preferences.
By default iGetter has defined the most popular file types downloaded on the
Internet - sit, bin, hqx, zip, gz, tgz.
Bellow are listed Internet browsers supported by iGetter:
- Internet Explorer,
Netscape, Opera,
iCab 2.6 - iGetter automatically will catch the download URLs from these
browsers according to the defined file types in the iGetter Preferences.
If iGetter successfully caught a download, in your browser will appear 'The
download was caught by iGetter. Click Back button to keep browsing'.
If you use IE please upgrade your browser to version 5.1 or later. Because
of known bug IE 4.5 and 5.0 doesn't return the right URL for downloading
to iGetter plug-in. For these versions of IE iGetter doesn't work properly
with framed web pages.
If your browser has other plug-in configured to handle the appropriate for
downloading with iGetter file type, you may need to reconfigure the browser
preferences manually. To do that you can follow the steps bellow (If
the 'Integrate with in Internet Browsers' option is checked, iGetter will
start catching of download URLs without any configurations to your browser.
The following explanation is only for the cases when your browser already
handles the desired file types and iGetter has not opportunity to catch
download URLs.):
- Internet Explorer
4.5/5.x - From the Edit menu choose 'Preferences'. At the 'Receiving
Files' group choose 'File Helpers' panel. Find the file extension type
(or MIME type) and push 'Change' button. In the Handling group choose
for 'How to handle' option 'View with plug-in' and for plug-in choose
iGetter Plug-in.
- Netscape Communicator
4.x - From the Edit menu choose 'Preferences'. Then go to 'Navigator'
group and choose Applications panel. Find the MIME type and push 'Edit'
button. For the 'Handled By' choose Plug-in option and for the plug-in
iGetter Plug-in. (Netscape 6.x doesn't need any manual configurations.)
- Opera - From
the Edit menu choose 'Preferences'. Choose File Types group and find
the extension for configuring. Push 'Edit' button and for Action group
choose 'Use Plug-in' option and for plug-in choose iGetter plug-in.
- iCab 2.6 - From the
Edit menu choose 'Preferences'. Choose Browser group and select the
Plug-ins menu item. Be sure that the 'use plug-ins' option is checked
and then find iGetter plug-in in the table. Check the check box before
it and also for the file extensions that you want iGetter to catch.
- Internet Explorer,
iCab 2.x - In
addition, iGetter integrates with IE 4+ and iCab 2+, through a contextual
menu for hyperlinks. To download any file just choose "Download
with iGetter..." using the contextual menu with any hyperlink on
the web page.
There is an extra contextual menu function named "Download all with
iGetter...". Using this function, you can process all links of
a current web page to the iGetter queue. See
more about this function.
Adding URLs to iGetter
You can add a URL address by one of the following methods:
- In addition to
the automatically catching of URLs from your browser you can drag a selected
hyperlink and drop it on the iGetter Main Window (you can drop it directly
to any Folder filter) or on the iGetter
Target Icon Window. Also, you can do the same with every URL location file
or clipping file.
- iGetter can catch
every URL address copied to the clipboard. See
more for configuration of this option.
- You can paste a URL
address by choosing Paste from iGetter's Edit menu.
- You can add a new
URL by choosing New URL from the File menu.
Here
is a detailed explanation of the New URL Window:
- There are two general modes
for adding a URL:
- First you can add a
download to iGetter without forcing it. That means you just want
to add the URL for later downloading. You can activate this mode either
by unchecking the 'Download now' option in the New URL Window
or by unchecking the 'Start downloading immediately
' option in Preferences.
- Alternatively, you can
force download immediately when you add a file to the iGetter queue.
That means the download will be forced to begin downloading immediately,
no matter how many other downloads are active at the time. You can activate
this mode either by checking the 'Download now' option in
the New URL Window or by checking the 'Start downloading
immediately' option in Preferences.
- Number of segments
- here you can specify the number of segments for the new download. By default
this number is determined in the Acceleration panel in Preferences. Read more
about segmented downloading here.
- Choose download folder
and file name (Path/Name) - the path field determines the download
folder for this file. This field remembers your last used download folder.
With the choose button you can quickly set the folder filter where this download
to be placed or browse for the new folder.
With checking of 'Add this folder to filters' you can add the
specified new folder to Folder filters.
In the Name
field you can set the name of the new file.
