Q1. What's in a name?
Noah Webster was a famous lexicographer.
Q2. Program fails to install.
Some databases are quite big. Please verify that you have enough free memory
on your PalmPilot. If there is not enough memory synchronization will fail.
Q3. I use Macintosh and I got garbage on the screen or program crashes.
A few Mac users reported that what they got on the screen
is garbage or the program crashes. This is most likely fault of the unpacker
program used to unzip noah.zip.
Some unzippers have settings to convert text files to Mac text files.
This alters the content of files and corrupts them.
This option can be set to "convert if file is recognized as text"
but unfortunately .prc and .pdb files are often (wrongly) recognized as text.
To fix that change your unzipper program settings to "never convert text files".
This tip comes from a user (thank you, Lutz Pietschker). It worked for him.
You can also try other unzipping program (eg. Zip It or Stuffit Expander).
Q4. Does Noah Lite support Springboard memory extension for Visor?
Yes. Here's a little instruction on moving Noah to Visor 8meg Flash ROM
module, kindly provided by John Novak (thanks, John!). In his own
words:
Getting it up there was a bit convoluted, and I used the Backup springboard
module to simplify the process:
- Make a backup of the Visor onto the Backup Springboard. This is done by
inserting the module and pressing one button.
- Delete stuff from the Visor until there is about five megs of empty space.
- Using the desktop, install both the Noah application and the full
dictionary.
- Hotsynch the Visor.
- Insert the 8 meg flash ROM into the Visor, and use the File Mover
application on the Springboard to move both Noah and the dictionary onto the
Springboard. This takes a little time.
- Replace the 8 meg Springboard with the Backup Springboard, and Restore. An
error message warning you that the Visor has been hotsynched since the last
backup will appear; this is okay.
You now have what is effectively a five-megabyte dictionary Springboard.
Noah will reside quite happily on the Springboard and can be run from there, so you
don't waste RAM.
Q5. Does Noah Lite support TGRpro's compact flash?
Noah Lite runs on TGRpro just fine but it doesn't know how to use it's compact
flash memory. There are not plans to provide direct compact flash support
for Noah Lite.
Q6. The database is too big.
Noah Pro has better compression (databases take less memory)
as well as more databases.
Q7. Can I make my own database?
Only Noah Pro allows you to
create your own databases.
Q8. What are advantages of Noah Pro?
Here's a detailed explanations. In short:
- Better compression - saves memory for other programs
- Devil's Dictionary, satirical dictionary by Ambrose Bierce
- Much more databases
(7 more, 11 in total)
- Ability to
create your own dictionaries
- Many user interface enhancements:
- on-screen keyboard works
- history of 5 last accessed words
- ability to scroll either by tapping or using hardware buttons
- ability to scroll by line, half a page or a page
- persistent preferences
Q9. I like Noah's icon.
Noah's icon has been made and kindly provided by
Matt Sephon
(matt@ewtoo.org).
Q10. I have a question that is not answered here.
