The student population keeps Strasbourg's nightlife vibrant. Many of the regular hotspots are clustered around the Cathedral and along rue des Juifs, but it is worth considering other options: an evening tour on a bateau-mouche or the son et lumière performances at the Cathedral in the summer.

Bars: Bars stay open until at least 2330 and often until 0400. Le Zurich, 59 rue de Zurich, is a sparse but comfortable café. Decorated with faded photographs, it has a certain old-world charm, and draws a mixed bunch of people who gather to chat, read the paper or play cards. The relaxing Académie de la bière, 17 rue Adolphe Seyboth, open daily until 0400, serves over 70 varieties of beer. Zum Schluch, 3 rue de l'Outre, is a large, friendly and centrally located bierstub, while the Quai des Bières at the pont du Corbeau, is best visited for happy hour 1730-2000. Murphy's House, 9 rue des Frères, is an Irish pub complete with Celtic music and pop.

The Elastic Bar, 27 rue des Orphelins, is one of the trendiest bars, a step ahead of the popular Tapas Café, 16 rue de Bain Finkwiller. Designed by cutting-edge architect Jean Nouvel, Le Palais de la Bière, 29 rue des grandes Arcades, open daily 0730-0300 and later at weekends, is a hyper-trendy, three-levelled bar that serves good tapas and snacks. Perennial favourites include Les Aviateurs, 12 rue des Soeurs, L'Annexe, 29 quai Finkwiller and La Java-Le Village, 6 rue du Faisan. More dignified evenings are in order at the Hilton Hotel, avenue Herrenschmidt, which draws the business community with its ever-so-British Churchill Bar.

Clubs: The two-level bar-club Le Café des Anges, 42 rue de la Krutenau, open Tuesday-Saturday 2100-0400, seems to be perpetually 'in' and plays salsa with tango, as well as jazz and groove. Another youthful hot spot is Le Sous-Sol, 1 rue du Miroir, which moves to the sound of house, techno and speed garage, gay night is Monday, but it's open to all for the rest of the week. Traditional North African dance music Zouk is the favoured sound and rum the preferred drink at Le Bambou, 366 route de la Wantzenau. The hottest nightspot of the moment is the recently opened Golden Gate, 63 rue du Fossé-des-Tanneurs, the heart of the picturesque Petite France (Tuesday-Saturday 1130-0200 and Sunday 1600-2230). A techno crowd fills the place out every evening.

Casino: Casino de Niederbronn is the region's one and only casino, situated to the north of Strasbourg, at place des Thermes, Niederbronn. Games include the traditional roulette and blackjack, as well as slot machines. Dress should be smart to ensure admittance.

Live music: La Salamandre, 3 rue Paul-Janet, (Wednesday-Sunday 2100-0300) is a small, popular venue that hosts some 40 concerts each year. Acts that have recently appeared include Indochine, the eccentric Nina Hagen and Youri Buenaventura. With just 500 seats and reasonable prices, early booking is advisable (tel: (03) 8825 7942). Another top venue for live performance is La Laiterie, 10 rue du Howald (tel: (03) 8823 7237). Le Griot at the impasse de l'Ecrevisse, just opposite the Hôtel de Ville on place Broglie, is one of Strasbourg's best jazz clubs.
