Sport The city supports two first-league football teams: FC Bayern-München eV, Säbener Strasse 51 (tel: (089) 699 310 or 6993 1333 (bookings); website: www.fcbayern.de), and TSV 1860 (the Lions). The former is the biggest club in the country and, despite losing to Manchester United in the dying seconds of the 1999 European Cup Final, is one of the most successful clubs in Europe. Two major tennis tournaments are held in Munich each year: the BMW Open takes place in the summer and the indoor Compaq Grand Slam is in the autumn. One of the biggest events of the year is the Six-Day Bicycle Race in the Olympiahalle in November. Regular horseracing events take place at the Galopp-Rennbahn in München-Riem, Graf-Lehndorff-Strasse 36 (tel: (089) 945 5230), and at the Trabrennbahn München-Daglfing, Rennstrasse 35 (tel: (089) 9300 0146). In addition to enjoying the plentiful sports facilities and parks in the city, residents and visitors can make use of Munich's enviable proximity to the Alps; heading south for hiking, mountain-biking and climbing during the summer, and for skiing and other snow sports in the winter. The Bayerischer Landessportverband eV, Georg-Brauchle Ring 93 (tel: (089) 1570 2500), can provide information on sporting opportunities throughout the state. The Sportamt, Sachsenstrasse 2 (tel: (089) 2333 32103; website: www.sport.musin.de), has details of all sports clubs and facilities in the city. Golf: Non-members are welcome at Golf München-Riedhof in Egling-Riedhof (tel: (081) 717 065). This 18 hole course is open every day except Monday throughout the year. The same applies for Golf Club München Nord-Eichenried, Münchenstrasse 57, in Eichenried (tel: (081) 239 3080). Rates are DM160 for one round. A valid golf pass stating a maximum handicap of 34 is required. Roller-blading: The young and beautiful people of Munich ditched their shoes long ago in favour of inline-skates; visitors who wish to join them can hire roller-blades for DM15 per day from Skate and Fun, Grafinger Strasse 6, Kunstpark Ost (tel: (089) 4900 1313), and from Sport Scheck, Sendlinger Strasse 6 (tel: (089) 21660). Swimming: There are 17 municipal pools in Munich, ranging from outdoor Freibäder set in spacious parkland to indoor pools with spa facilities. The Olympia-Schwimmhalle, Olympic Park (tel: (089) 3067 2290) is Europe's largest indoor swimming venue. A complementary leisure complex opened in 1999. The Müllerisches Volksbad, Rosenheimer Strasse 1 (tel: (089) 2361 3434), has an indoor pool and steam rooms all housed in a beautiful Art Nouveau building. Winter sports: The highest mountain in Germany, the Zugspitze (www.zugspitze.de) is located a one-and-a-half-hour train-ride south of Munich near the popular ski resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. A day's ski pass for the Zugspitze costs DM62 for adults (concessions available). Season passes for the whole Garmisch area are also available. |
