The Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français (SNCF) is the national railway service (website: www.sncf.com). The main train station, located at 20 place de la Gare (tel: (08) 3635 3535), is France's sixth largest railway station. A post office (18 place de la Gare), money exchange and car hire services (Budget, Europcar and Hertz) are available at or near the station.

Rail services: There are good links to many European cities and direct links to France's major cities. The new high-speed TGV-est, currently under construction, will enhance the existing service (2006 planned completion date). The journey times to Strasbourg: from Frankfurt - 2 hours 50 minutes; Paris - 4 hours; Brussels - 5 hours; London - 6 hours; Bordeaux - 7 hours 30 minutes; Marseille - 9 hours.

Transport to the city: The tram, taken in the direction of Illkirch, leads to the city centre.
