Walking Tours
One of the most popular walks is the four-hour guided tour to Mt Esja. This is only possible in July and August; tours are run by Iceland Nature Tours, Dalvegur 22, Kópavour (tel: 564 2060) and cost IKr1500. For those wishing to venture further afield, two outdoor touring clubs: Ferdafélag Iceland, Mörkin 6 (tel: 568 2533; fax: 568 2535) and Outdoor Life and Touring Club (Útlivist), Hallveigarstígur 1 (tel: 561 4330), offer a selection of day walking tours , which leave by bus from the central bus station (BSÍ).

Bus Tours
A variety of excursions are available ranging from half-day tours of the city to several days of glacier exploring. Allrahanda Excursions, Hyrjarhófdi 2 (tel: 540 1313; fax: 540 1310; e-mail: allrahanda@allrahanda.is; website: www.alrahanda.is), offers a selection of day and half-day tours in and around Reykjavik. Reykjavik Excursions, Vesturvör 6, 200 Kópavogur (tel: 564 4777; fax: 564 4776; e-mail: main@re.is; website: www.re.is), runs tours around the city and its environs as well as to places further afield. Whale-watching tours are offered from April to October by H I Tourist Service, Ferdapjónusta Sudurnesja, 232 Keflavik (tel: 421 7777; fax: 421 3361; e-mail: hring@ismennt.is; website: www.arctic.is/itn/whale). All tours leave from the central bus station (BSÍ) or, by arrangement, from travellers' hotels. BSÍ (see the Public Transport section) also offers city tours and whale-watching tours.

Horse Tours
The Icelandic horse is a strong but gentle animal that has adapted perfectly to the terrain; consequently horseriding is a popular way of visiting sights outside the city and is suitable even for people with no riding experience. Eldhester, Vellir, 810 Hveragerdi (tel: 483 4884; fax: 486 5577; e-mail: info@eldhestar.is; website: www.eldhestar.is), offers one- to two-hour tours for IKr2000-3000, half-day tours for IKr4000 and whole day tours for IKr6000.
