Tours of the City Walking Tours Walking tours of central Hong Kong are apt to involve elbowing one's way through crowds of shoppers or tripping over filipina maids. But the Hong Kong Tourist Association does have a couple of itineraries, with Heritage and Architectural Walks in Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. Guides and a rental audio commentary system are available for HK$50. The walks take from two to four hours. The HKTA Visitor Hotline (tel: 25 08 12 34) or any tourist office can provide details. Other operators also run HKTA-approved tours, such as Gray Line Tours (tel: 23 68 71 11) or Splendid Tour and Travel (tel: 23 16 21 51). Walkers wishing to range further have plenty of well-trodden routes for penetrating the rural New Territories and backwoods of Hong Kong Island, such as the 100km (60-mile) MacLehose Trail, the 50km (30-mile) Hong Kong Trail, or even the 3.5km (2.2-mile) Peak Trail. But water bottles are essential for anyone trying these in the summer. Bus Tours The Hong Kong Tourist Association offers numerous themed tours, including a Heritage Tour, a Come Horseracing Tour, a Healthy Living Tour, a Morning Tea and Tai Chi Tour and a Land Between coach tour round the more scenic and folksy areas of the New Territories. Tours typically last about five hours and cost from HK$275 to HK$490. For details, visitors should contact HKTA Events and Tours Department (tel: 28 07 63 90 or 25 08 12 34). Boat Tours Boat tours are provided by several companies. Watertours (tel: 21 18 62 35) provides a variety of harbour and island tours from HK$200 to HK$630, while Star Ferry provide ferry tours (tel: 21 18 62 41) for HK$180. Other Tours Tram tours (tel: 21 18 62 35) are available on an open-topped luxury tour tram for HK$180. |
