Sport Traditional sports have always been available throughout Beijing but over the past decade more modern international sports have also started to attract a large audience. Numerous go-kart circuits, baseball pitches and rock-climbing teams are to be found in the city and tournaments for virtually every sport are held on a regular basis. In common with the rest of the world, football is very popular and the main football team in Beijing is Guo An whose home is the Worker's Stadium on Gongtibeilu. They are currently at the top of Premier League A and tickets can be bought at the stadium on the day or in person at ticket outlets in shopping centres and department stores. Golf: Chaoyang Golf Club, Tuanjiehuxiaoqu Shangsilu, Chaoyang (tel: (10) 65 00 11 49) has a nine-hole golf course together with a driving range. Beijing Country Golf Club, on the west bank of Chaobai River, Mapo Village, Shunyi County (tel: (10) 69 40 11 11) and Beijing Grand Canal Club, Hu Ge Zhuang, Tongzhou District (tel: (10) 89 58 29 88) both offer good 18-hole courses. Ice skating: The extreme cold in the winter allows for skating on some lakes such as Beihai, but in the summer locals go to Le Cool Ice Skating Rink at the China World Shopping Arcade. Swimming pools: Many hotels have swimming pools but often use is restricted to hotel residents or members. Try the Friendship Hotel, 3 Baishiqiao Lu, Haidian (tel: (10) 68 49 88 88) or the Yingdong pool, near the Asian Games Village (tel: (10) 64 91 04 68). Waterparks have arrived in China in a big way. There are a number around Beijing including Qingnianhu Water Park, Qingnianhu Park (tel: (10) 64 21 06 15) and Lakeview Waterpark (tel: (10) 66 01 82 52). Tennis: Indoor and outdoor tennis courts are available at the Beijing Grand Canal Club, Hu Ge Zhuang, Tongzhou District (tel: (10) 89 58 29 88). Outdoor courts are also available at the Beijing International Club on Jianguomenwai (tel: (10) 65 00 39 41); Beijing Tennis Club, on Xiannongtan (tel: (10) 63 17 56 06) and Beijing International Centre, on Tiantan Donglu (tel: (10) 67 14 23 74). |
