Nightlife With the tourist boom, the nightlife scene in Cracow has picked up, with intimate cellar bars in and around the Main Market Square, and a number of spots in the Kazimierz area, around ulica Szeroka, drawing crowds. The distinctions between cafÉs, restaurants, bars and clubs tend to blur a bit, especially later in the evening. There are a lot of student bars - not surprising, given the huge student population in the city. Live music tends to be rock or jazz, but there are occasionally more off-beat shows. Bars have tended to close fairly early in the past, but more and more are opening until 0200 or even 0400. When there is one, the cover charge is around Z5-15. Bars: A casual, young crowd is drawn to the cheap prices and festive atmosphere at the Jaszczury Student Club, Rynek Glowny 8, and the Free Pub downstairs at ulica Slawkowska 4. U Louisa, Rynek Glowny 13, draws a mixed crowd, some of whom are there for the internet access. On weekends, there are often live jazz and blues bands. Stanczyk Pub also has jazz on Friday and Saturday nights. Its location in the cellar of the Town Hall Tower on the Main Market Square makes it easy to find. Casinos: There is a branch of Casinos Poland in the Hotel Continental at aleja Armii Krajowej 11. The hotels Forum, ulica Marii Konopnickiej 28, and Pod Roza, ulica Florianska 14, also have casinos that are open to the public. Clubs: Cracow offers an increasing number of late-night dance venues - some of the more interesting ones are further out from the centre and can be a bit difficult to find. The first stop for many visitors (and many local students) is Pod Jaszczurami, Rynek Glowny 7/8. Open until 0300, the usual disco nights are supplemented by live bands on Tuesday. Kulturalny, ulica Szewska 25, is a bit more agreeable and draws a local student and arty crowd to the dance floor. The popular RFM-FM radio station is associated with Club Wolnosc, ulica Krolewska 1, where DJs and occassional live bands get things grooving in one of the city's bigger dance venues. Live music: Jazz is popular in the city, and some of the cellar bars make for the perfect environment to hear bands play. U Muniaka Jazz Club, ulica Florianska 3, runs until midnight Wednesday to Sunday. Podium, ulica Bracka 4, is a decent cellar venue for blues and rock at the weekend. Ch?opskie Jad?o, ulica Agnieszski 1, is an excellent venue for live performances of folk music. Many of the city's bars and clubs have live music one night a week. |
