Sightseeing Cracow's Stare Miasto (Old Town) is based around the Rynek Glowny (Main Market Square), with a network of lanes surrounded by the Planty, a linear park that occupies the site of the former town walls. The Brama Florianska (Florianska Gate) is one of the surviving remnants. To the south of the Old Town, on the banks of the Wisla (Vistula) River, is Wzgorze Wawelskie (Wawel Hill) where the bishopric of Cracow was founded and where Polish Kings ruled from the fourteenth to seventeenth centuries. The tiny district of Kazimierz, southeast of the Old Town, is where the Jews lived for centuries before being forced into the wartime ghetto across the river in Podgorze.
