The Port of Melbourne is the largest general cargo port in Australia and among the top 25 busiest ports in the world. It is located four kilometres (2.5 miles) southwest of the city centre and is also the departure point for ferries to Tasmania.

Ferry services:
The Spirit of Tasmania, operated by TT-Line (tel: (03) 92 06 62 11), departs for Devonport from the Inner East Berth at Station Pier three times a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, returning on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday (journey time - 14 hours overnight). There is an additional sailing at weekends from mid-December to the end of January and a single fare for an outside cabin is A$175 per person. There is a high-speed Devil Cat also owned by TT-Line, which provides a catamaran service between the Port of Melbourne and George Town near Launceston on Tasmania. The catamaran departs in the morning from Melbourne on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and returns from George Town in the afternoon on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. The six-hour journey costs A$125 one way. If taking a car, the driver's fare is A$185 with the cost of the vehicle being dependent on its length.

Transport to the city:
Tram 109 goes to Collins Street. Buses (Skybus) depart from Spencer Street train station (Bus Bay 45) on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 1600 to connect with the overnight ferry; and meet the incoming ferry at 0845 on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday. The one way fare is A$4 and return fare A$7 (journey time - 15 minutes).
