Excursions

For a Half Day

Taunus:
The line of hills to the north and west of Frankfurt provide a wooded setting for a number of famous spa towns, including Wiesbaden, the capital of Hesse, and Bad Homburg, where hot saline springs are set in a beautiful park. From the attractive town of Königstein the road continues to the Grosser Feldberg (881m/2890 ft) - the highest point in the Taunus. Bad Homburg can be reached by S-Bahn 5; but the rest of the area is only accessible by car.

Whilst in the area, it is recommended to visit the Open-Air Museum Hessenpark (tel: (06081) 588-0; fax: (06081) 588 60), in Neu-Anspach which shows an original village of traditional half-timbered houses from the in- and outside. Some of these buildings including the mill and the granary can even be hired for conferences

For a Whole Day

Heidelberg:
An hour's train ride south of Frankfurt lies one of the most visited towns in Germany. Heidelberg fulfils all expectations, with its romantic setting on the banks of the Neckar, its Gothic and Renaissance castle and the oldest university in Germany. The picture-perfect town is enlivened by numerous lively festivals and popular student taverns. For further information contact the local tourist office (tel: (06221) 14220; fax: (06221) 142 222).

Rhein and Main tours: In spring and summer, boat operators offer river trips to destinations on the Main and Rhein (Rhine) rivers west of Frankfurt. Points of call include the legendary Lorelei and the wine village of Rüdesheim. Although times and schedules vary, boats generally depart from the Eisener Steg bridge. Information is available from Frankfurt Personenschiffahrt (tel: (069) 281 884; fax: (069) 284 798).
