National Rail Enquiries (tel: (0845) 748 4950; website: www.nationalrail.co.uk) provides 24-hour information for all train companies in the UK. Glasgow is served by two main rail stations: Glasgow Central has train services to London and other English cities while Queen Street offers services to and from Edinburgh and the north of Scotland.

Rail services: Virgin Trains, (tel: (0345) 222 333 (enquiries); website: www.virgintrains.co.uk), operates western line services to London Euston; GNER, (tel: (08457) 484 950 or 225 225; website: www.gner.co.uk), runs services on the main eastern route to London Kings Cross via Edinburgh. There are up to 15 direct services a day and the journey takes between 5 hours 20 minutes and 6 hours. A night-train service is available on ScotRail's (tel: (0845) 748 4950; website: www.scotrail.co.uk), 'Caledonian Sleeper' (journey time - approximately 7 hours).

ScotRail also offers services to Oban, Fort William, Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness, and a half-hourly service to Edinburgh (journey time - 50 minutes) from Queen Street Station, and Carlisle, Largs, Lanark, Ayr, Kilmarnock, East Kilbride, Dumfries and Stranraer from Central Station.

Transport to the city centre: Queen's Street station is close to Buchanan Street underground; Glasgow Central station is close to St Enoch underground. Both have access to a number of bus lines and are within the city centre, and both have low-level stations on the Glasgow suburban system.
