Web site: www.klia.my.com Kuala Lumpur International Airport, or KLIA, 43km (27 miles) to the south of the city centre, is a major gateway to South East Asia. It handles flights for over 40 international carriers and in 1999 the airport served over 13 million passengers. Major airlines: Malaysia Airlines (MAS) (tel: (03) 746 3000; web site: www.malaysiaairlines.com.my) is the national airline operating both international and domestic flights. Other major airlines include: British Airways, Canadian Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Garuda Indonesia, Japan Airlines, KLM, Lufthansa, Northwest, SAS, Singapore Airlines, Swissair and Thai Airways. Airport facilities: These include ATMs, bureaux de change, 24-hour shopping, duty-free, restaurants, postal services, tourist information, hotel reservations, medical service, left-luggage and prayer rooms. Car hire companies include Budget and Hertz. Business facilities: These include executive lounges, limousine service to the city and business centres (tel: (03) 87 87 29 29), which provide telephone, fax, internet, teleconferencing, postal and secretarial services. Transport to the city: Taxis must be pre-paid in the Arrivals Area at the airport; expect to pay RM65-70 for a budget car or RM90-95 for the premier service to the city centre (journey time - 40 minutes). KL City Buses (tel: (1 800) 880 495) operate a half-hourly Express Bus Service between 0645 and 2400 to the Airport Bus Terminal, Hentian Duta (journey time - one hour; cost: RM18-25). Regular feeder buses travel from Hentian Duta to Lot 10 on Jalan Sultan Ismail in the city centre between 0800 and 2430 (journey time - 30 minutes; cost: RM1). The cheapest way to travel to the city is by combined bus and train. The Stage Bus Service, which operates between 0715 and 2230, leaves the airport every 30 minutes for Nilai KTM Station (journey time - 30 minutes; cost: RM2.50). From Nilai, trains travel to Kuala Lumpur Railway Station between 0644 and 2244 every 20-30 minutes (journey time - one hour; cost: RM4.50). The completion of the express rail link from the airport to Kuala Lumpur Sentral Railway Station has been delayed until at least 2001. Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SZB) Tel: (03) 747 2169. Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport is located 20km (12.5 miles) west of the city centre and operates as a domestic terminal serving around two million passengers a year. Major airlines: Malaysia Airlines, Air Asia, Berjaya Air and Pelangi Air. Airport facilities: These include ATM, bureau de change, shops and restaurant. Business facilities: There are no business facilities, although the former terminal one building has been turned into a convention centre. Transport to the city: Taxis must be pre-paid at the Arrivals Area in the airport; expect to pay RM35-40 (journey time - 30-60 minutes). Bus number 47 leaves the airport for Klang Bus Station every 30 minutes (journey time - 45 minutes; cost: RM2). Arrival/departure tax: There is no arrival tax and tickets purchased within Malaysia usually include departure tax. Otherwise RM40 international and RM10 domestic departure tax is payable. Approximate flight times to Kuala Lumpur: From London is 13 hours; from New York is 20 hours 15 minutes; from Los Angeles is 17 hours 40 minutes; from Toronto is 21 hours 40 minutes and from Sydney is 7 hours 55 minutes. |
