Sport Berlin is home to the German Women's Open on the clay courts of the LTTC 'Rot-Weiss' in Grunewald each May. In men's basketball, Alba Berlin (the Berlin Albatrosses) are strong in the German league and compete in Europe. Games can be seen at the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Prenzlauer Berg (tel: (030) 5343 8000; website www.albaberlin.de). The Olympiastadion (Olympic Stadium) was built for the 1936 Olympic Games and is now the site for sports events, concerts and conferences. The Hertha BSC football team (ticket hotline, tel: (01805) 437 842 (DM0.24 per minute); website: www.herthabsc.de) plays at the Olympic Stadium. In season 1999/2000 Hertha enjoyed a spell in the glamorous Champions League, but they did not qualify for the 2000/2001 competition and are struggling to recapture their Bundesliga (First Division) form. German football was given a massive boost by the announcement in 2000 that the country will stage the 2006 World Cup, with games scheduled for the capital. Golf: There are 15 club courses and ten public ones in the Berlin-Brandenburg area - information is available in the Golf Dates Berlin-Brandenburg Special magazine, available from Thiele, Schild & Co. The Golf-Zentrums Berlin-Mitte, Chausseestrasse 96 (tel: (030) 285 7001), is a central spot with equipment and training available and golfers can practice from 1000 to dusk. The public courses charge around DM35 a round, while the fees at the clubs range from DM50-DM100. Swimming: There is no shortage of places to swim in the city. In summer, locals head to the beaches on Wannsee and Tegeler See in West Berlin, or to the larger Grosser Müggelsee in the East. Public swimming pools include the indoor pool at Bad am Spreewaldplatz, Wiener Strasse 59, in Kreuzberg (tel: (030) 612 7057), and an outdoor pool next to Prinzenstrasse U-Bahn station. The Sport- und Erholungszentrum (SEZ), Landsberger Allee 77, in Friedrichshain (tel: (030) 4218 2322), is one of Berlin's largest sport centres and has a swimming pool. |
