Shopping

Denver is the largest shopping city in a 600-mile radius. Shopping hours vary but many shops stay open until at least 1900 and often 2200 on weekdays. Most are open on Sunday afternoons. Sales tax is 3.8%; but cannot be refunded to international visitors.

Downtown, shopping centres are based around the 16th Street Mall, a mile-long pedestrian promenade, lined with pavement cafÉs. Free buses pass along every 90 seconds. The Tabor Center at the north end of the mall has 80 shops and restaurants in a three-storey, glass building. Nearby, Denver Pavilions has 50 shops and restaurants, including the Wolfgang Puck CafÉ, Maggiano's Little Italy, Virgin Records and Barnes & Noble. By contrast, the beautiful Victorian buildings of Larimer Square, in Denver's oldest street, house art galleries, exquisite antique jewellery stores, clothing stores, restaurants, cafÉs and nightclubs.

Out-of-town shopping starts in the Cherry Creek Shopping District, with 420 department stores, galleries and boutiques divided between the tree-lined streets of Cherry Creek North and upscale Cherry Creek Shopping Center. Neiman Marcus, Lord & Taylor, Saks, Tiffany's, Rainforest CafÉ and the Tattered Cover Bookstore, the largest independent book store in America, are all to be found here.

Park Meadows
, a recent addition to the shopping scene, featuring the boutiques Nordstrom, Dillard's, Foleys and Joslins, is south of Denver off I-25 and C-470. Further south on I-25, Castle Rock has Colorado's largest factory outlet centre with more than 130 shops featuring top brand-name goods at reduced prices. The building continues with a new mall just opening at Flatiron Crossing.

Denver Antique Market
, 1212 Broadway, has 250 dealers selling everything from furniture to soda fountains (open: Monday to Saturday 1000-1730 and Sunday 1200-1700). The Mile High Flea Market at 7007 East 88th Avenue, Henderson has 32 hectares (80 acres) of junk, bargains and curiosities. It is open weekends and Wednesdays 0700-1700 and admission costs US$2 at weekends and US$1 on Wednesday.

Among the lively tents and booths of Cherry Creek Farmers' Market, the scent of garden-fresh fruit and vegetables mingles with the aroma of roasted coffee and freshly baked bread in the parking lot at the southwest corner of the Cherry Creek Shopping Center every Saturday.
