Accommodation Stockholm has risen into the top ten of international conference destinations; unsurprisingly, since the world descends on it each year for the Nobel Prize ceremony. Over 8000 of Stockholm's 220 hotels are less than 20 minutes walk from Central Station. Peak seasons are May to September and around the Nobel Prize ceremonies in the first two weeks of December; off-peak seasons are October to November and January to April, when the cold Baltic winter descends. Stockholm's finest hotels are among the world's best, while at the budget end of the market, youth hostels have taken to the water in style. A room tax of 12% is included in the price of the hotel room; service charges are also included. Hotellcentralen (tel: (08) 789 2425; fax: (08) 791 8666; e-mail: hotels@stoinfo.se ; web site: www.stoinfo.se) in Central Station is Stockholm's official hotel booking agency. Grand Hôtel Stockholm Södra Blasieholmshamnen 8, 103 27 Stockholm Tel: (08) 679 3500. Fax: (08) 611 8686. E-mail: info@grandhotel.se Web site: www.grandhotel.se Cost: SKr2395-3060. One of the Leading Hotels of the World, the Grand lives up to the sublime simplicity of its name. Reigning serenely on the quayside opposite the Royal Palace since opening in 1874, it has hosted more Nobel prize-winners than any other hotel; as well as presidents, film stars and celebrities of every description. Its first-class Swedish-style Veranda restaurant gives a beautiful view of the palace, Parliament and the Opera, while the Cadier Bar is perfect for lounge lizards. Discreet classic elegance is the keynote of its 307 rooms, including 21 suites. The vast Vinterträdgården and the mirrored Spegelsalen can hold the largest and most distinguished congresses. Lady Hamilton Hotel Storkyrkobrinken 5, 111 28 Stockholm Tel: (08) 234 680. Fax: (08) 411 1148. E-mail: info@lady-hamilton.se Web site: www.lady-hamilton.se Cost: SKr2090-2290. The Lady Hamilton is located in the heart of Stockholm's historic Old Town. It is also at the heart of Stockholm's medieval past: the building dates from the 1470s, and the even older well in the basement has been converted to a bathing pool. The 34 rooms contain fine Swedish antiques, as well as modern amenities. There are three conference rooms and a bistro/breakfast room giving superb views of the cobbled street outside. Lydmar Hotel Sturegatan 10, 114 36 Stockholm Tel: (08) 56 61 13 00. Fax: (08) 56 61 13 01. E-mail: info@lydmar.se Web site: www.lydmar.se Cost: SKr1700-2900. The Lydmar with its Whizzing Thirties lobby is a lynchpin of the Stockholm arts and music scene, beside the nightlife mecca of Stureplan. The hotel hosted the Stockholm Film Festival in 1994 and 1995. Its Lobby Restaurant serves up jazz and soul performances and contemporary art shows as well as highly regarded food, while diners who prefer more peace and quiet can choose the Matsalen. Its 56 rooms were renovated in 1997. Scandic Hotel Continental Stockholm Vasagatan, Box 120, 101 22 Stockholm Tel: (08) 51 73 42 00. Fax: (08) 51 73 42 11. E-mail: continental.se@scandic-hotels.com Web site: www.scandic-hotels.com Cost: SKr1400. Flagship of the Scandic Hotels chain, the Continental enjoys a perfect location: right beside Central Station and the terminus for airport buses. It also has genuine character, and was completely renovated in 1987. The Scandic chain prides itself on its recycling policy, and virtually all items in its 268 rooms can be recycled. Business facilities include one business centre and eight conference rooms. Sheraton Stockholm Hotel & Towers Tegelbacken 6, Box 195, 101 23 Stockholm Tel: (08) 412 3400. Fax: (08) 412 3409. E-mail: sheraton_stockholm@sheraton.com Web site: www.sheratonstockholm.com Cost: SKr1200-2925. The Sheraton is Stockholm's biggest hotel and its premier conference venue. Situated on the waterfront at Tegelbacken near Central Station, the Sheraton has ten separate business venues with capacity of up to 400 guests. Its 459 rooms, including 11 suites, are being equipped with access to advanced IT facilities to complement their substantial amenities. Other attractions include its notable restaurant, the Liberty Kitchen, and an authentically German-style pub, Die Ecke. Clas på Hörnet Surbrunnsgatan 20, 113 48 Stockholm Tel: (08) 165 130. Fax: (08) 612 5315. Cost: SKr1090-1345. Unbeatable for character, this tiny eighteenth-century inn has ten much sought-after rooms furnished with Swedish antiques, as well as three dining rooms that serve some of the best food in the city. Rooms are individually named and delightfully decorated. Although a little far from the centre, it is more than worth the trip. Mälardrottningen Hotel Riddarholmen, 111 28 Stockholm Tel: (08) 243 600. Fax: (08) 243 676. Web site: www.malardrottningen.gs2.com Cost: SKr825-1900. Stockholm has developed quite a tradition of 'floatels', but this one is in a different bracket to the romantic youth hostel af Chapman (see below). Once Barbara Hutton's yacht, the Mälardrottningen is now a small hotel moored by the Old Town opposite the City Hall, with an excellent restaurant. The saloons even double as conference or business venues. The 59 cabins are small, but for character and location the Mälardrottningen is hard to beat. af Chapman Västra Brobänken, Skeppsholmen, Stockholm 111 49 Tel: (08) 463 2266. Fax (08) 611 7155. E-mail: info@chapman.stfturist.se Cost: SKr170-210. A budget hostel with more than a difference, af Chapman is in fact a beautiful nineteenth-century three-mast ship (with attached shore facilities), moored opposite the Royal Palace. Fabulous views, unique ambience and low prices: early booking is advised to guarantee one of the coveted 136 berths. |
