Located 21km (14 miles) northwest of the city, Tullamarine is the largest airport in Australia. It is served by more than 25 international airlines and six domestic airlines with 177 flights weekly to 30 different cities worldwide.

Major airlines:
Qantas operates both international and domestic flights from Melbourne (tel: 131 313, Australia only; web site: www.qantas.com.au), together with Ansett Australia (tel: 131 300, Australia only; website: www.ansett.com.au), which has an extensive domestic network. Other major airlines include Air China, Air New Zealand, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Garuda Indonesia, Gulf Air, Malaysian Airlines, Olympic Airways, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways and United Airlines.

Approximate flight times to Melbourne:
From London is 22 hours 30 minutes; from New York is 21 hours 30 minutes; from Los Angeles is 16 hours 20 minutes; from Toronto is 21 hours 10 minutes and from Sydney is 1 hour 15 minutes.

Airport facilities:
These include Sky Plaza shopping and food outlets, duty free, bureaux de change, ATMs, left-luggage, information desk and medical centre. Car hire companies include Avis (tel: (03) 93 38 18 00); Budget (tel: (03) 93 38 69 55) and Hertz (tel: (03) 93 38 40 44).

Business facilities:
Meeting facilities are planned for 2000.

Departure tax:
The departure tax of A$27, and a noise tax of A$3.40, are included in the air fare.

Transport to the city:
Taxis are readily available and the journey to the city centre costs approximately A$30 (journey time - 30-40 minutes). Buses, operated by Skybus (tel: (03) 93 35 30 66), run every 30 minutes (0640-2340) and then every hour; the journey to the city centre costs A$10 (journey time - 45 minutes).
