Getting Around Public Transport Transports en Commun de la RÉgion d'Avignon (TCRA) (tel: (04) 32 74 18 32) supplies public transport throughout 'Grand Avignon' (the Avignon Region), including services to Les Angles, Villeneuve-lès-Avignon and Le Pontet. The major bus stops in central Avignon are in front of the main post office (poste), place Pie and rue de la RÉpublique. The system runs 0700-1900 Monday to Saturday (less frequently on Saturday). The restricted Sunday service (labelled with a number followed by a 'D' for dimanche) runs 0800-1800. Line 30 runs on weekdays, weekends and bank holidays. During the Avignon Festival, there is a special late-running service. Tickets may be pre-purchased or bought on-board the bus, and must be stamped on boarding. Information and bus tickets are available at the Point d'Accueil, avenue de Lattre de Tassigny (tel: (04) 32 74 18 32), located between the railway station and the Avignon Tourist Office. Tickets are also for sale at tabacs, newsagents and shops displaying the TCRA logo. One ticket costs FFr6.50; a carnet of ten tickets costs FF50. A monthly pass costs FFr175 (concessions available). Taxis The taxi service is centrally run by Taxi Radio Avignonnais (tel: (04) 90 82 20 20; fax: (04) 90 86 61 69). The major taxi rank is located in front of the train station; others are at Raspail, St-Lazare and St-Michel. Taxi journeys around central Avignon are paid for by the kilometre at FFr7.52 (0700-1900) and FFr11.28 (1900-0700 and bank holidays). In contrast to Parisian taxis, luggage is carried for free. Tips are welcome but not expected. Limousines The only company in Avignon that provides a limousine service is ATPM (tel: (06) 03 15 74 05; fax: (06) 90 15 02 17; e-mail: sergepages@atpm.fr). Rates are FFr2500 per day with chauffeur. Driving in the City The Old Town is small enough to be covered on foot and parts of it are pedestrianised. However, for those who choose to drive, conditions are good, roads rarely traffic-clogged and there is a special pleasure to be gained in driving through the portes (gates) of the ancient city walls. The main (supervised and 24-hour) car parks are located by the station, at 7 avenue Monclar, and underneath the Palais des Papes square. In peak season, an additional car park opens at the foot of the Pont St-BÉnÉzet and on Piot Island (with a shuttle bus to the city centre). It is best to choose these supervised spaces, as car break-ins are all too frequent; alternatively, there are good car parks west of the city centre. Car Hire The minimum age for car hire varies from 21 to 25 years; drivers must possess a national driving licence that they have held for at least one year. Providers include: RentaCar, 130 avenue Pierre SÉmard (tel: (04) 90 88 08 02), Sixt, 3 avenue St-Ruf (tel: (04) 90 86 06 61), and VÉo, 51 avenue Pierre SÉmard (tel: (04) 90 87 53 43), all are centrally located. Daily rates for a small car start at about FFr250. Bicycle & Scooter Hire Transhumance Voyages (tel: (04) 90 27 92 61) hires out motorbikes (FFr310-980 per day), scooters (FFr150-310) and bicycles (FFr30-120), in high season (April to October), from the bus station on boulevard St-Roch. |
