Calgary International Airport is located 17km (10.5 miles) northeast of the city centre. The busiest airport in Alberta and the fourth busiest in Canada, Calgary International is the transport hub for southern Alberta. It handles over seven million passengers every year and features the largest civil aviation runway in Canada. It is served by over 40 scheduled and charter airlines, providing service to 24 Canadian cities, 13 American cities and 23 other international cities.

Major airlines:
The national airline is Air Canada (tel: (403) 265 9555 or (888) 247 2262; web site: www.aircanada.ca), which took over Canadian Airlines International (tel: (800) 426 7000, toll free; web site: www.cdnair.ca) in January 2000. At the time of writing, flights can still be booked from either company but the flight itself may be on the other carrier's plane. To minimise difficulties, exact flight details and frequent flier status should be verified in advance.

Other major carriers include AirBC, Air Transat, American Airlines, British Airways, Canada 3000, Continental Airlines, Delta, JAL, Lufthansa, Northwest, United Airlines and WestJet.

Approximate flight times to Calgary:
From London is 8 hours 30 minutes; from New York is 4 hours 50 minutes; from Los Angeles is 3 hours; from Toronto is 4 hours and from Sydney is 15 hours.

Airport facilities:
These include duty-free shops, banks, ATMs, baggage storage, an electronic hotel finder (French and English), an oxygen bar, bureaux de change, medical clinic, post office, restaurant, food court, bars, visitor service centre and car hire (Avis, Dollar, Hertz, Thrifty, National Tilden and Budget).

Business facilities:
These include credit-card operated internet and e-mail services. Some business facilities are also available in airline executive lounges.

C$10 (included in ticket price).

Transport to the city:
The Calgary Transit bus service runs to the city centre every 30 minutes. A variety of other shuttle services are available. Airport Direct (tel: (888) 642 5252), Airpot Shuttle Express (tel: (888) 438 2992), Greyhound (tel: (403) 265 9111) and Brewster (tel: (800) 661 1152) service the city centre. Brewster, Airport Direct and Banff Airporter (tel: (403) 250 2084) service Banff. Taxis are available at metered rates, costing around C$25, with journeys taking about 20 minutes.
