Website: www.aia.gr Athens International Airport (Hellinikon Airport) is located 16km (nine miles) from the city. There are two air terminals: the East terminal is served by international and charter flights, while the West terminal is served exclusively by Olympic Airways flights. A new international airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) with an annual capacity for 16 million passengers is currently under construction and is due to open in March 2001. Major airlines: Greece's national airline is Olympic Airways (OA) Syngrou 96 (tel: (01) 926 9111 or 966 6666 (reservations) or 936 3363 (flight information); fax: (01) 926 7154; website: www.olympic-airways.gr), runs international and domestic flights from the East terminal at Athens airport. Olympic flies to major cities in Europe and the Middle East, and also to Boston, New York, MontrÉal, Toronto, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Bangkok, Johannesburg, Melbourne and Sydney. Its domestic flights cover destinations throughout mainland Greece and the islands. Other international airlines serving Athens include Air Canada, Air France, British Airways, Delta Airlines, KLM - Royal Dutch Airlines, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines and Swissair. Approximate flight times to Athens: From London is 3 hours 15 minutes; from New York is 10 hours 10 minutes; from Los Angeles is 18 hours 35 minutes; from Toronto is 12 hours and from Sydney is 22 hours 5 minutes (plus stopover and transfer). Airport facilities: These include duty-free shops and boutiques, bars and restaurants, a pharmacy, a post office, EOT tourist information (East terminal), tourist police, banks and bureaux de change (Acropole and Hermes in the East terminal are open 24-hours), and an OTE centre offering telephone, mobile phone and fax services. Car hire providers include: Avis, Budget, Eurodollar, Europcar, Hertz, Holiday Autos and MotorRent. 24-hour parking is available. Business facilities: There is a business lounge at the airport but this does not have dedicated business services. Arrival/departure tax: None. Transport to the city: An Olympic Airways express bus runs to the city centre from the West Terminal every 30 minutes. Express bus 90 or 91 run from the East and West terminals to Syntagma Square or Stadiou Street in Athens every 40 minutes 0500-0000 and every hour 0000-0500 (journey time - 30 minutes). Bus 122 or 133 run from the West terminal to the centre 0540-0000. Several buses go to the port of Piraeus: bus 19 operates around the clock from the East and West terminals; bus 101 runs 0500-2245 from the East terminal only; bus 110 runs 0500-2200 from the West terminal. Taxi services are available; meters start at Dr200 plus a surcharge of Dr300 from the airport. Each piece of luggage over 10kg is charged at Dr55. |
