Bergen's well-equipped one-terminal airport is the second most important in Norway (after Oslo). It is located 19km (12 miles) south of the city centre. As there are no public announcements, visitors are advised to keep an eye on departure boards.

Major airlines: Braathens (tel: 5599 8250; website: www.braathens.no) and SAS (tel: 5511 4390; website: www.sas.com) are the main operators. Widerøe (tel: 5591 7860; website: www.wideroe.no) also provides services. Flight information can be obtained from the airport information desk (tel: 5599 8155).

Approximate flight time to Bergen: From London is 1 hour 50 minutes; from New York is 8 hours 50 minutes; from Los Angeles is 12 hours 50 minutes; from Toronto is 9 hours 40 minutes; and from Sydney is 22 hours 50 minutes.

Airport facilities: The information office (tel: 5599 8155; fax: 5599 8158) is located on the ground floor of the arrivals hall and can make hotel reservations. It is open daily 0700-2000. Currency can be exchanged at Bergens Banken (Monday to Friday 0700-2000, Saturday 0900-1500 and Sunday 1400-2000). There are also automatic exchange machines and an ATM. The post office is open Monday to Friday 0830-1630 and Saturday 0900-1230. Other facilities include a pharmacy, a newsagent, duty-free and souvenir shops and several restaurants, cafÉs and bars. Baggage lockers large enough to accommodate a suitcase cost NOK20 per day. Car hire companies Avis (tel: 5522 7618), Budget (tel: 5522 7527), Europcar (tel: 5522 7320) and Hertz (tel: 5522 6075) all have offices at the airport.

Business facilities: There are no airline business lounges but there is a small conference centre that has telephone and fax machines, an IBM-compatible computer and a meeting room for up to 30 people (tel: 5599 7400).

Arrival/departure tax: Included in ticket cost.

Transport to the city: The journey into Bergen takes 30-40 minutes, depending on traffic conditions. The airport bus drops passengers at the bus station, the Radisson SAS Hotel Norge, the Torget and Radisson SAS Royal Hotel in Bryggen. On weekdays the service runs three times an hour, weekend services are less frequent. Tickets cost NOK45 (concessions available). A taxi to the centre costs between NOK200 and NOK300, depending on the traffic flow. Driving from the airport into the centre of Bergen is easy, as the R580 is well signposted.
