Rail Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM; tel: (03) 274 7435; web site: www.ktmb.com.my) operate the rail services in Peninsula Malaysia. These are fast and efficient, although prone to derailments and land/mudslides on longer journeys. Kuala Lumpur Railway Station, Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin, is one of the city's most historic and attractive buildings. Facilities include ATMs, bureau de change, left-luggage, prayer rooms, internet and tourist information (tel: (03) 274 7435). Rail services: The main lines are from Singapore (journey time - seven hours) in the south to Haadyi (journey time - 12 hours) in the north via Butterworth (journey time - seven hours); also, from Kuala Lumpur to the east coast via Kuala Lipis or Gemas. A KTM Railpass allowing unlimited travel on any berth of train (except sleeping) is available to overseas visitors (cost: RM450 for 30 days; RM210 for ten days). Transport to the city: Taxis must be pre-paid (journey time - 10-20 minutes; cost: RM7). Buses are available outside the station, while Pasar Seni LTR Station is a ten-minute walk away. |
