Pearson International Airport is located 27km (17 miles) northwest of the city centre. Canada's busiest and largest airport, it handles over 27 million passengers per year and is served by over 60 scheduled and charter airlines, providing service to 27 Canadian cities, 47 American cities and 42 other international cities.

Major airlines:
The national airline is Air Canada (tel: (416) 925 2311 or (888) 247 2262; web site: www.aircanada.ca), which took over Canadian Airlines International (tel: (800) 426 7000, toll free; web site: www.cdnair.ca) in January 2000. At time of writing, flights can still be booked from either company but the flight itself may be on the other carrier's plane. To minimise difficulties, exact flight details and frequent flier status should be verified in advance.

Other major carriers include: Air France, Air New Zealand, American Airlines, American Transair, British Airways, Canadian Airlines, Delta Airlines, KLM - Royal Dutch Airlines, Korean Airlines, Lufthansa, Northwest Airlines, Qantas, Swissair, and United Airlines.

Airport facilities:
Pearson's three terminals have facilities that include ATMs, bureaux de change, shops, duty-free boutiques, banks and restaurants. Transport Canada Airport Information Centres are located in terminals one and two. Inter-terminal shuttle buses link the terminal buildings. Car hire is also available from Avis, Budget, Hertz and Thrifty.

Business facilities:
Sheraton Gateway Hotel (tel: (905) 672 7000) offers a business centre. Some business facilities are available through airline executive lounges.

Arrival/departure tax:
None.

Transport to the city:
An express bus by Pacific Western runs from the airport to downtown Toronto (tel: (905) 564 6333 or 564 3232). Public transport is also provided by the Toronto Transit Commission (see the Getting Around Toronto section), GO Transit and Mississauga Transit. Fifteen private bus companies run services to and from the airport. Information desks for each company are located in the arrivals area at each terminal. Licensed limousines and taxis are also available at fixed rates, with journeys downtown taking about half an hour and costing about C$35.

Toronto City Centre Airport is situated on an island in Toronto harbour. Handling scheduled commercial, charter, private and corporate flights, the airport primarily services the nearby business community, offering flights to nearby destinations in Canada, such as Montreal, London and Ottawa.

Air Canada.

Airport facilities:
These include a restaurant and car hire from Avis and Tilden.

Business facilities:
Air Canada Lounge (business centre).

Arrival/departure tax:
C$12.00.

Transport to the city:
Air Canada shuttle service to Royal York Hotel (tel: (416) 925 2311). Taxis available at metered rates. A ferry (free of charge to Air Canada passengers) provides transportation to the airport.

Approximate flight times to Toronto:
From London is 8 hours; from New York is 1 hour 30 minutes; from Los Angeles is 4 hours 35 minutes; and from Sydney is 18 hours 15 minutes.
