Unsurprisingly for a city that grew up to receive visitors, Santiago de Compostela has some top-quality hotels, including the world's oldest. There are also some fine examples of renovated historic buildings, placing guests right inside the character of the city. In addition to arranging accommodation, this organisation also issues certificates to verify that a pilgrimage has been made.

This modern five-star hotel has 73 rooms with marble baths, air conditioning, and satellite and cable television. There is a restaurant, bar and cafeteria. It is fully equipped for business, with a business centre offering eight rooms of different sizes and provision for audiovisual services, simultaneous translation, video-conferencing and secretarial support.

The parador for Santiago de Compostela, this was originally a royal hospital/hostel for pilgrims, dating from 1499, and is reportedly the oldest hotel in the world. Arranged around four cloisters, the hotel is on the same square as the Cathedral, the town hall, the Colegio de San Xerome and other monuments, and is a landmark in itself. The 130 rooms are anything but venerable: splendidly characterful, but well maintained and fully equipped with modern conveniences.

Part of the Meliá chain, this modern hotel, in the newer part of town, opened in 1998. It is located near the station close to the Corte Inglés department store. It has nine halls and salons for meetings and functions, with the largest accommodating over 400 people.

A Santiago de Compostela classic, this modern, centrally located business-style hotel has 148 rooms and is situated near the university campus. There are several conference and function venues, able to accommodate up to 140 people. The hotel also has its own discotheque and swimming pool.

Close to the station and the Galician Parliament building, this small but high-quality hotel opened in 1997. It has 20 airy, bright rooms and excellent facilities, such as café, restaurant, hairdressing salon and meeting rooms.

Right by the Old Quarter, in an eighteenth-century manor house that was once both a bank and a Jesuit residence, this hotel was in fact only opened in July 1999. It looks out onto the Old Quarter's market place, where typical Galician produce is sold by local peasants, and the other façade overlooks the Parque de Belvis. The hotel has its own private garden, and all 36 rooms are air-conditioned and fully equipped with modern amenities. There are also meeting rooms for functions.

Close to the airport but far more than just another airport hotel, the Ruta Jacobea is an esteemed Galician institution. Its 20 rooms are housed in a fine local-style building, its restaurant is one of the best in town and it sits astride the old Pilgrim's Way. It also has three meeting rooms with full audiovisual equipment.

Just 150m (500ft) from the Cathedral, the San Clemente is a budget hotel with 36 rooms. It opened in a delightful listed historic building in April 1999. It's facilities, include café, stone courtyard,modem ports and room service.
