Web site: www.airportthai.or.th Bangkok International Airport, located 25km (15miles) north of the city centre is operated by the Airports Authority of Thailand. It is a major gateway in South East Asia and one of the region's busiest airports catering for over 80 international carriers. In 1998, over 25 million passengers used the airport and the new international terminal has relieved congestion and handles passengers efficiently. Major airlines: Thai International (tel: (02) 280 0060; web site: www.thaiair.com) is the national airline and Bangkok Airways (tel: (02) 391 2454; web site: www.bkkair.co.th) and Angel Airlines (tel: (02) 953 2260; web site: www.angelairlines.com) operate domestic flights and a limited number of international routes in the region. Other major airlines include: Air China, Air France, Alitalia, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Garuda Indonesia, Gulf Air, Japan Airlines, Lufthansa, Malaysian Airlines, Northwest, Qantas, SAS, Singapore Airlines, Swissair and United Airlines. Approximate flight times to Bangkok: From London is 13 hours 20 minutes; from New York is 19 hours 15 minutes; from Los Angeles is 17 hours 45 minutes; from Toronto is 21 hours 25 minutes and from Sydney is 8 hours 40 minutes. Airport facilities: These include 24-hour shopping, duty free, restaurants, snack bars, postal services, bureaux de change, tourist information, hotel reservations, left luggage and medical service. Car hire companies include Avis and Budget. Business facilities: These include executive lounges, conference room, limousine service to city and rental of mobile phones. Arrival/departure tax: There is no arrival tax but B500 (international) or B30 (domestic) tax is payable in cash on departure. Transport to the city: Taxis can be pre-paid at the Arrivals Hall in the airport; expect to pay B350-400 to the city centre (journey time - 40-90 minutes). Airport buses (tel: (02) 645 0555) operate three different routes into the city every 15 minutes (0500-2400). Route A-1 goes to the Silom Road business district; route A-2 goes to Sanam Luang and route A-3 to Sukhumvit Road (approximate journey time - one hour; cost B70). Thai Airways offers a minibus service between the airport and major hotels, departing as soon as it is full (journey time - 45-90 minutes; cost B100). A bus/riverboat shuttle service operates every 30 minutes (0600-2100) to the Oriental, Royal Orchid Sheraton and Shangri-La hotels. A bus takes passengers to the river for the boat trip to the hotels (total journey time - one hour; cost B700). The riverboat service is mainly for the use of hotel guests, but others may use it if there is space. Bangkok Airport Express trains operate every 90 minutes (0800-1900) from the railway station adjacent to the airport (journey time - 35 minutes; fare B100).
