In 1999, 2.3 million passengers used Ferihegy airport, which provides good links with Western and Eastern Europe.

Major airlines: The national airline MalÉv (MA) (tel: (1) 235 3535; fax: (1) 266 2685; website: www.malev.hu) operates flights to 48 cities, including long-haul scheduled flights to New York, Toronto, Beijing and Bangkok. Aeroflot, British Airways, Air France, KLM, Lufthansa and Swissair offer regular services to Budapest.

The Duna Lounge (tel: (1) 296 8706) is also available in terminal 2A. Plenty of time should be allowed between touchdown at Ferihegy airport and meetings in the city centre.

Departure tax: Ft2790.

Transport to the city: The easiest way to the city centre from Ferihegy is by LRI's Airport Minibus Shuttle (tel: (1) 296 8555), which takes visitors to any address in the city. Single (Ft1500) or return (Ft2500) tickets can be purchased from LRI's passenger service desks or booked before departure (tel: (1) 296 8555); the service also picks up passengers at hotels or private addresses for the return flight.

Two public transport services reach Budapest in about 45 minutes: Centrum minibuses depart every 30 minutes from ErzsÉbet tÉr bus station 0530-2100 (tickets costing Ft600 are sold on the bus) and the 93 bus to K?bánya-Kispest metro station. Buses with the number 93 displayed in black serve only Ferihegy terminal one, buses with a red 93 serve both terminals. A pre-purchased Ft95 ticket, available at vending machines or tobacconists in the airport, is required.

Taxis are available at all times; the fare should cost between Ft2500 and Ft3000.
