Rail SocietÉ Nationale de Chemins de Fer (SNCF) is the national rail carrier (web site: www.sncf.fr). Avignon belongs to the regional network (Transports Express RÉgionaux - TER) of Provence-Alpes-Côtes d'Azur, which has benefited from 23 additional trains since 1998 and increased security at the recently renovated Avignon station. The year 2001 will bring a new TGV service to Avignon-Courtine, an ultra-modern station that will be built on the southern edge of the city. This will bring Paris within 2 hours 40 minutes of Avignon. Avignon station (tel: (04) 90 27 81 63) is located on boulevard St-Roch. Facilities include left-luggage, porter and disabled service, bistro, newsagent and ticket reservations (tel: (08) 36 35 35 35). Bilingual signs and multi-lingual announcements ease the way for foreign visitors. As throughout France, tickets must be validated prior to boarding. Rail services: There are direct links to Paris (3 hours 20 minutes), Lille, Nantes, Rouen, Brussels and Geneva. Transport to the city: The station is centrally located on major bus routes. There is a taxi rank in front of the station. |
