The airport is located 13km (eight miles) to the west of the city centre. GLA is Scotland's busiest airport and the fourth busiest in the UK.

Major airlines:
Among the airlines serving GLA are Aer Lingus, Air Canada, American Airlines, British Airways, British Midland, Continental Airlines, EasyJet, Icelandair, KLMuk, Lufthansa, Go, Air Malta, Scotairways, Air France and Sabena.

Airport facilities:
Include bureaux de change, ATMs, left luggage facilities, shops, duty-free shops, post office, buffet, bar, cafés, restaurants, tourist information and baby-care rooms. Wheelchairs, toilets and telephones for the disabled are available. The following car hire firms are represented: Alamo, Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and National.

Business facilities:
Payphone, payfax and modem facilities are all available. The Glasgow Airport Business Centre (tel: (0141) 847 5450; fax: (0141) 847 5499) offers meeting rooms, conference facilities, an IT suite and full secretarial support.

Transport to the city:
There are rail connections to Glasgow Central station from Paisley Gilmour Street station which is three kilometres (two miles) from the airport. Local buses to Paisley depart every 15 minutes during the day and every 30 minutes in the evening (travel time - approximately ten minutes). The M8 motorway links the airport with the city. Shuttle buses to Glasgow's city centre are provided by Fairline Airport Express (tel: (0141) 553 1313; cost: £3 one way, £5 return) and Scottish Citylink (tel: (0990) 50 50 50 (UK only); cost: £3 one way, £5 return). Buses depart every ten minutes up to 1700 and every 15 minutes in the evening (travel time - approximately 20 minutes) and drop passengers off at various stops, including the rail and bus stations. Metered taxis are available 24-hours a day from the front of the main terminal building; a ride to the city centre costs approximately £17 (travel time - approximately 20 minutes). Cab Fly (tel: (0141) 848 4588) is the taxi management company for the airport.

Glasgow Prestwick International Airport (PIK)

Billing itself as 'Scotland's Independent Airport', PIK is located on the coast 52km (32 miles) to the southwest of Glasgow and offers limited scheduled services as well as charter flights.

Major airlines: Ryanair runs nine flights a day to London Stansted, three to Dublin, two to Paris and one to Frankfurt. There is also an extensive summer and winter holiday charter programme to the western Mediterranean and the USA.

Airport facilities: Facilities include a tax- and duty-free shop, a newsagent, a gift shop, cafés and bars. Car hire is provided by Avis, Hertz, Europcar and National.

Business facilities: There is a business and VIP lounge, and the Aviator Suite has facilities for social functions, conferences and receptions.

Transport to the city:
Prestwick Airport owns its own rail station, which is connected to the airport by a covered walkway. ScotRail trains depart every 30 minutes for Glasgow (journey time - 45 minutes). The A77 (which becomes the M77) is the main road route to the city (journey time - 40 minutes). A coach service is provided by Stagecoach Western every 30-60 minutes (journey time - 50 minutes). People flying from Prestwick Airport are entitled to a 50% reduction in their ScotRail, Stagecoach or Citylink fares to the airport from anywhere in Scotland.

Approximate flight times to Glasgow:
From London is 1 hour 15 minutes; from New York is 6 hours 50 minutes; from Los Angeles is 11 hours 40 minutes (plus transfer); from Toronto is 6 hours 40 minutes; and from Sydney is 23 hours 5 minutes (plus stopover and transfer).
