Nightlife Nightlife After hours in Delhi is strictly five star - with prices to match. The best parties are, as anywhere else, the most exclusive and therefore concentrated in a social round of embassy parties and functions. It is notoriously difficult to get a drinks licence here, which is why much of the city's nightlife centres around the bars of the deluxe hotels in and around the Diplomatic Enclave at Chanakyapuri. Well-heeled Delhiites dress up to congregate in the glamorous 24-hour cafÉs and restaurants, which feature floor shows and musical performances, or to dance in the air-conditioned comfort of the hotel discos. Outside of the hotels, Chanakyapuri's chic complex of Santushti is one of the most stylish places to be seen. Watering holes are clustered in the tourist haven of Connaught Place, as well as at Hauz Khas Village, Defence Colony, Vasant Vihar (where rich Indian kids try to look cool at TGI Fridays), and a handful of places in Khan Market and South Extension. A breezier - and far cheaper - time can be had doing lazy rounds of the rooftops at Pahar Ganj, a far more casual and laid-back night out. The Dollar may go a long way in terms of Indian Rupees, but night owls should be wary when ordering wine - some places slap on a tax of up to 100%. Bars: Anyone who has been to Delhi returns to tell stories about the Rodeo bar on A-Block of Connaught Circus, because of its Indian waiters dressed as cowboys, and mock saddle seats at the bar. On G-Block of Connaught Circus, are Saqi, at Hotel Alka, and Maikada at Hotel Marina, both with outside terrace. In the Diplomatic Enclave, there is the Maurya Sheraton's Bali High, on Sardar Patel Marg; the Polo Lounge, at the Hyatt Regency on Bhikaiji Cama Place; and the Garden Bar at the Ashok, 50b Chanakyapuri. In Hauz Khas Village, a good location for deer-spotting is the rooftop of Park Baluchi, inside the Deer Park. In Defence Colony Market, Moets comes well recommended, while Vasant Vihar has TGI Fridays, Golden Dragon, at C-Block Market, and Xs, at Mini Mahal, C-Block Market. Clubs: There are about half a dozen discos which have become regular haunts of elite Delhiites - most are in the luxury hotels, and several have select membership, as well as a dress code. One of the most popular is CJ's at Le Meridien, Windsor Place, Janpath, while Some Place Else at The Park, 15 Parliament Street, appeals to the local crowd with its English pub-style aspirations. Oasis, at the Hyatt Regency on Bhikaiji Cama Place, is quite lively in a flashy kind of way, and Annabelles, at the Inter-Continental, Barakhamba Avenue, Connaught Place, and Wheels, at the Ambassador, Sujan Singh Park, both have an enthusiastic following. Live music: The Jazz Bar at the Maurya Sheraton, Sardar Patel Marg, features a live jazz show every evening by Indian musicians, while the Tavern at the Hotel Imperial, on Janpath, also has in its restaurant-cum-bar. |
