Nightlife Much of Bangkok's nightlife is concentrated in the two red light districts of Bangkok - Patpong (between Silom and Surawong Roads) and Soi Cowboy (Sukhumvit), named after the first bar that opened here called the Cowboy Bar. Bangkok's sex industry is as blatant and booming as ever. However, in addition to the numerous sex clubs and massage parlours, there are many excellent cocktail bars and restaurants and at night the area is always thronging with people. There are no regulations concerning licensing hours and most venues are open all day and late into the night. The dress code is very relaxed, although a few of the nightclubs do enforce smarter dress. As in any city, nightlife venues come and go and news of the latest hotspots can be found in the city's listings magazine, Bangkok Metro. Bars: The Bull's Head, Sukhumvit 33/1, is popular with many ex-pat residents of Bangkok. The DJ there plays pop music from the last 30 years, so it is great for an evening of nostalgia. For a relaxing drink head to the Hare & Hounds Pub on Soi Cowboy and the Old Dutch, at Sukhumvit Soi 23. Irish pubs are popular in most cities in the world and the homely Delaneys on Convent Road is no exception. A stylish watering hole is The Barbican on Soi Thaniya, Silom Road, with a good selection of drinks and good food. Casinos: Gambling is illegal in Thailand. Clubs: CM2 is a huge, rather expensive place, incorporating a disco, bar and restaurant in the basement of the Novotel Hotel on Siam Square. Devotees of techno regularly pack Lucifer at Radio City on Patpong Soi 1. One of the smarter venues, with a strict dress code, is Taurus next to the Four Wings Hotel on Sukhumvit Soi 26. Live music: Ad-Makers at 51 Soi Lang Suan (off Ploenchit) has live bands that play to international standards and the crowd often sing along. Slightly more refined is That's It on Soi Saladaeng 1 (off Rama IV). For fans of blues and jazz an excellent venue is Blues-Jazz at 25 Sukhumvit Soi 53. The Hard Rock CafÉ on Siam Square Soi 11 have resident live bands playing every night except Sunday. Fans of country and blue grass music should head for Harmonics on the corner of Sukhumvit Soi 55 and Thonglor Soi 18. |
