Road The letter 'E' (plus a number) designates main roads, while lesser roads are indicated by the letter 'R' (plus a number). Traffic drives on the right and overtakes on the left. The speed limit is 90kph (56mph) on motorways, 80kph (50mph) outside towns, 50kph (31mph) in populated areas and 30kph (19mph) in certain residential streets. All passengers must wear seat belts. Motorcyclists must wear helmets. All vehicles must travel with headlights on at all times. The maximum legal alcohol to blood ratio for driving is 0.05%. Both national driving licences and International Driving Permits are valid in Norway. Third party insurance is mandatory and a Green Card is recommended. The Norwegian Automobile Federation (NAF) (tel: 2234 1400) operates an emergency breakdown service which can be used by anyone who is a member of a major international motoring organisation. Emergency breakdown service (toll free): NAF 8100 0505 Routes to the city: Bergen is connected to Sandvika, 15km (nine miles) west of Oslo by the E16, which runs Bergen-Voss-Flåm-Hol-Gol-Hønefoss-Sandvika. There is a shorter route but this necessitates a ferry crossing. Driving times to Bergen: From Oslo - 8 hours 30 minutes; Stockholm - 17 hours 15 minutes; Copenhagen - 24 hours 15 minutes. Coach services: Norway Buss-Ekspress (tel: 8154 4444; website: www.nor-way.no) operates services between Oslo and Bergen, with buses departing daily at 0930, 1415 and 2200. Return buses leave Bergen at 0730, 1130 and 1930.The journey takes about 11 hours. Seats cannot be pre-booked. A single ticket costs NOK580, a return NOK1160. There is a free connection between Bergen bus station and the city centre. |
