Scotland's fastest growing airport is located 12km (eight miles) west of Edinburgh. Over 100 million pounds is being invested in developments to the airport, which are due to be completed in April 2001; some facilities may relocate as a consequence.

Major airlines: Since the demise of British Caledonian, Scotland does not have its own national airline. British Midland (tel: (0845) 755 4554) flies to a large number of destinations from Edinburgh. Other airlines include Aer Lingus, Air France, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, British European, Braathens, Crossair, easyJet, Go, Gill Airways, KLM UK, Lufthansa, Sabena, SAS, Scot Airways and Tyrolean Airways. There are more than 25 flights to London's five airports every day, with regular flights to other major cities in the UK and overseas. Direct transatlantic links are provided from Glasgow International Airport, about one hour from Edinburgh.

Approximate flight times to Edinburgh: From London is 1 hour 15 minutes; from New York is 8 hours 35 minutes; from Los Angeles is 11 hours 55 minutes; from Toronto is 8 hours 40 minutes and from Sydney is 22 hours 10 minutes.

Airport facilities: Facilities include bureaux de change, an airport information desk, an office of the Edinburgh Tourist Board, a hotel reservations desk, a left-luggage/lost property office, shops (including a newsagent and several gift shops), duty-free shops, first aid, bars, restaurants and the following car hire firms: Avis, Budget, Europcar National and Hertz.

Business facilities: British Airways, British Midland and Servisair all have executive lounges with telephone, fax and computer log-on facilities.

Departure tax: £20 that is always included in the price of the flight.

Transport to the city: Lothian Buses run from the terminal forecourt to the city centre terminus at Waverley Bridge (situated above Waverley railway station) via Haymarket station. These run every eight minutes between 0900 and 1700 and roughly every 10-20 minutes at off-peak times. A single fare costs £3.30 and the journey takes about 25 minutes. The Airsaver (£4.20) covers a single fare, plus same-day, unlimited travel on Lothian Buses once in the city centre. Taxis (tel: (0131) 344 3344) are available from a rank in front of the terminal. The journey to the centre takes 20 minutes and costs about £15. Access to the city by car is along the A8 Edinburgh-Glasgow road.
