Gaelic football - a cross between soccer, rugby and a street brawl - is played at Croke Park; rugby is at Lansdowne Road; soccer is at Tolka Park or Lansdowne Road; and race meetings are at Fairyhouse and Leopardstown. The whole town goes a little crazy during the national hurling and Gaelic football finals (September) and the Dublin Horse Show (August) - both are outstanding events in the city's sporting calendar. Fifteen Acres, Phoenix Park, has a racecourse and is also a popular venue for Gaelic football, cricket, soccer and water polo. Greyhound racing, at Harold's Cross and Shelbourne Park, is a local passion.

Golf: Within an hour of Dublin there are over 50 courses. Most are private but some are pay-and-play courses. Sillogue Golf Course (tel: (01) 842 9956), is one of the best value at Ir£6.50 for nine holes and Ir£10 for 18 holes. Pre-booking is advisable. The 18 hole course at Luttrellstown Castle Golf Club (tel: (01) 808 9988; fax (01) 808 989; e-mail: enquiries@luttrellstown.ie; website: www.luttrellstown.ie/golfclub.htm) is also open to the public and the Green Fees are IR£50 Monday to Friday and IR£55 Saturday and Sunday.

Health club: Crunch Fitness at UCD, Belfield (tel: (01) 260 3155), is open to the public Monday to Friday 0700-2200 and Saturday and Sunday 1000-1730 and charges Ir£6 per visit.

Squash: Most courts are members only. Spheres Squash Club, 14-18 Drimnagh Road (tel: (01) 455 1021), charges Ir£6.50 per hour for non-members. Irish Squash (tel: (01) 450 1564) can provide more information.

Swimming: Most pools are in Dublin's suburbs. St Paul's College Swimming Pool, Rahen (tel: (01) 831 6283), is north of the centre and costs Ir£3.20. A full list is supplied in the Golden Pages.

Tennis: Apart from parks with courts, Spawell, Wellington Road, Templeogue (tel: (01) 490 4401), is one of the few courts open to the public. Tennis Ireland (tel: (01) 668 1841) can provide further information.
