Nightlife As Bergen is so small, there is no particular nightlife district - although the most popular areas include Bryggen and Ole Bulls plass. Bars tend to close at around 0200, while the nightclubs (which usually charge an entrance fee of about NOK50 or more), stay open until about 0300. It is not necessary to dress up for a night out on the town - locals dress casually. The consumption of beer and wine is legal from the age of 18 years, while spirits may not be drunk until the age of 20 years. There are no casinos, as gaming is illegal. Prices are comparatively high in bars, clubs and restaurants - a night on the town is not a cheap option in Norway. Bars: There are two of the now obligatory 'Irish' pubs in town, Scruffy Murphy's on Torget and Finnegan's, Veiten 3, while the English Pub in Øvre Ole Bulls Plass offers yet another type of theming. The Dickens Bar on Ole Bulls plass is a cafÉ during the day and a pub at night. The Børs CafÉ, Strandgate 12, began life as a beer hall in 1894. Børs means stock market and the price of beer fluctuates according to demand. Clubs and live music: Banco Rotto, Vågsallmenning 16, used to be a bank, but it is now a cafÉ by day and a trendy bar by night. There is live music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Rick's CafÉ og Salonger, Veiten 3, is a bar, disco and live music venue rolled into one. Logen in Ole Bulls plass stages revues and cabaret throughout the year. Nightclubs Maxime, Ole Bulls plass 3, and Det Akademiske Kvarter (Academic Quarter), Olav Kyrres Gate 49-53, both promote pop and rock concerts. Det Akademiske Kvarter stages jazz and classical performances. Den Stundesløse, Ole Bulls plass 9-11, offers jazz, blues, roots and gospel, while the Garage Rock Club, Christiesgate 14, stages regular rock concerts. |
