There is a harbour in northeast Reykjavik, but it only serves cargo ships.

Ferry services: The Smyril Line company (tel: 562 6362; fax: 552 9450) operates a weekly passenger and car-ferry service during the summer between Torshavn in the Faroe Islands, Bergen in Norway, Hanstholm in Denmark, Lerwick in the Shetland Islands and Seydisfjordur in eastern Iceland. Alternatively, direct sea journeys to Reykjavik can be made with the cargo shipping company Eimskip (website: www.eimskip.is) on its vessel Bruarfoss. The ship sails every two weeks between the harbour in northeast Reykjavik and the Faroe Islands, Hamburg, Aarhus, Copenhagen, Helsinborg, Gothenburg and Frederikstad. Bookings can be made with Iceland Travel Ltd (tel: 585 4000; fax: 588 0202).

Transport to the city: It takes about 15 hours by bus from Seydisfjordur to Reykjavik and timetables almost certainly make an overnight stay in Seydisfjordur necessary.
