The oldest amusement park in Europe is open April to August, daily 1400-0000, and boasts wooded parkland and herds of deer as well as the usual rollercoasters (tel: (39) 633 544; fax: (39) 630 138).

Humlebæk-Louisiana station is a 36-minute train ride from Copenhagen. Drivers can take the picturesque coastal road, 'Strandvejen'. The museum is open daily 1000-1700 (Wed until 2200), admission costs Dkk55.

For a Whole Day

'Castle Tour of North Zealand':
This seven-hour tour, organised by Copenhagen Excursions (see Bus Tours section) includes a visit to Kronborg Slot in Helsingør (Elsinore), claimed as the setting for Shakespeare's Hamlet; Fredensborg Slot, the royal summer residence; and the Frederiksborg Slot in Hillrød, a Renaissance palace, built by Christian IV, now a museum.

Roskilde: A 30-minute train journey from Copenhagen, this is the oldest town in Denmark - famed for its Viking heritage, as the Viking Ship Museum on Strandengen reveals (tel: (46) 300 200, open daily 0900-1700, Dkk50). The local tourist information centre at Gullandsstræde 15 (tel: (46) 352 700) can provide details of other interesting sites, such as the Domkirke, Ledreborg Castle and the Roskilde Fjord.
