Hotels are of a high standard of quality in Lisbon, and are graded from one to five stars. Some of the most interesting properties are located in the area around the Rossio. There are also numerous pensions and guest houses in the city's most colourful quarters. The busiest times are during Easter, the festivals and in mid-summer, when it is strongly advised to book in advance. A room tax of 5% is usually included in the hotel bill.

The Ritz, with private balconies in most of its 284 rooms, is located on a hill near Parque Eduardo VII. Fantastic views of Old Lisbon can be had from the penthouse fitness centre and the Varanda restaurant and terrace. The hotel offers 1477 sq metres (18,891 sq ft) of meeting and function space, in addition to a well-equipped business centre and secretarial and translation services.

One of Lisbon's most elegant hotels, the Lapa Palace overlooks the River Tagus from a hilltop location surrounded by greenery in the west end of the city. The nineteenth-century building has well appointed interiors highlighted by azulejo tiles, a gastronomic restaurant, as well as one by the poolside in summer. Its 24-hour business centre complements the six conference rooms (the largest has a capacity of 200) and 86-seat auditorium, which has simultaneous translation facilities.

Albergaria Palácio Belmonte

Just outside the castle walls, this newly opened hotel offers terrific views over the Alfama and River Tagus from its terraces. The eight suites and three apartments in this former count's residence (built in 1503) are spacious and enhanced by azulejos and modern art. Amenities include a swimming pool and gardens, making for a romantic getaway in the heart of one of the city's most fascinating quarters. Advance booking is essential.

The Radisson is the closest hotel to the airport, and just a few minutes walk from Campo Grande metro station. It has 221 large guestrooms and 11 meeting rooms, including a ballroom. Other facilities include a cocktail bar, the Bordalo Pinheiro restaurant (serving Portuguese and international cuisine), and fitness and business centres.

On a quiet street near the shopping centres at Saldanha and the Parque Eduardo VII, this four-star hotel offers 153 clean and modern rooms. Meeting rooms (the largest holds 110), the Cozinha do Real restaurant, a café and a bar round off the hotel's facilities.

Hotel Métropole

This recently renovated hotel has retained its 1920s feel and is ideally situated on the Rossio. Its 36 rooms are individually decorated with antiques, and many have wonderful views over the square and neighbouring Baixa quarter. Amenities include a bar and function room with a capacity for 30 people.

Facing right onto one of the centre's main squares, the Eden occupies a former theatre which has been modernised yet retains many of the original Art Nouveau features. The interior courtyard makes for a wonderful escape from the city, as does the rooftop swimming pool.

Directly opposite the Expo98 site, this hotel is well situated near the new International Fair of Lisbon for conference-goers. It offers 116 guestrooms with kitchenettes, as well as a bar, restaurant, business centre and four meeting rooms.
