Amtrak (tel: (800) 872 7245; website: www.amtrak.com) is the national railway provider and its service is generally good. The Amtrak terminal (tel: (510) 450 1081) is across the Bay at Emeryville (near Oakland), just off Powell Street. The ticket office and baggage check-in, however, are located in the Ferry Building at the end of Market Street, in downtown. Facilities include free unattended parking in the station lot, a food and espresso bar and a newspaper stand.

Rail services: Interstate trains leave from the Amtrak terminal, the central node on the West Coast line, as well as the western terminus of a line running across the Rockies to Salt Lake City in Utah and beyond. There are daily services to Sacramento, San Joaquin Valley, Portland, Seattle, Vancouver, Reno, Salt Lake City, Denver, Chicago, San Jose, Los Angeles, Anaheim and San Diego. Examples of journey times are: Los Angeles - between 8 hours 30 minutes and 12 hours, San Diego - 12 hours, Ontario - 10 hours, Las Vegas - 12 hours.

Transport to the city: There are regular connecting buses to San Francisco's Ferry Building and other downtown locations.
