There are some wonderful hotels in Zurich, helped no doubt by the views over the lake and mountains. Many of these exemplify the high standards of service for which the Swiss are renowned. There are about 10,000 beds in over 100 hotels, suited to a variety of budgets. Zurich's finest hotel is located at the end of fashionable Bahnhofstrasse and is set in its own private park on the edge of the lake. Baur au Lac has 125 rooms, as well as six meeting rooms with a capacity of up to 200 guests. There is a private nightclub and the vintages from the well-stocked wine cellar can be purchased in the hotel's wine store. Among the bars and restaurants, Le Pavillon stands out for its Mediterranean feel and riverside terrace (from May to October), while Le Restaurant Français continues to delight gourmets throughout the colder seasons.

This lovely hotel, overlooking the lake, opened early this century. Its 56 rooms offer five-star luxury, and the banqueting rooms and bar are elegantly appointed. The hotel's French restaurant offers the modestly named hors d'oeuvre chaud - a culinary masterpiece developed for Prince Aga Khan III during his wartime stay here.

For a century, this elegant hotel with its striking towers has offered guests a quiet, green retreat with terrific views over the city and Lake Zurich. The Dolderbahn funicular railway leads down to the city, from where the centre is a short tram ride away. There are 183 rooms and suites, conference and banqueting facilities and a 24-hour business centre. Leisure facilities are outstanding: walking trails, a nine-hole golf course, tennis, swimming pool and an ice rink.

Located in the green hills near the airport, the Hilton is a short, free bus ride from the airport. Its 279 rooms are complemented by meeting facilities for up to 320 guests; computers and printers are available. In addition to the café and bar (with evening piano music) there are restaurants serving French and Swiss cuisine.

This gaily painted, three-star hotel, with 33 rooms, occupies a historic building near the Kunsthaus, just to the east of the Old Town. Alfresco dining is possible in the garden restaurant.

One of the most convenient hotels to the Messe, the Swissotel also has some of the best hotel conference facilities in the city. Its 19 meeting rooms have a capacity of 800 - a few of these are on the 31st floor, with the Alps as a backdrop. The hotel offers 347 rooms, a business centre, leisure centre with swimming pool, three restaurants and a piano bar.

The five-star Marriott lies just opposite the Hauptbahnhof on the banks of the River Limmat. Many of its 260 rooms and suites enjoy panoramic views of the lake and mountains. Meeting rooms for up to 400 are supplemented by a business centre. There is also a health and fitness centre with swimming pool. The White Elephant serves Thai cuisine, while La Brasserie is more traditional; the Riverside Bar offers a good place to relax.

Just across the River Limmat from the Hauptbahnhof, this comfortable hotel offers 62 renovated and refurbished rooms in the centre of the city. The breakfast buffet is included in the room price.
