Sightseeing Bologna is a city to wander in. Any tour of Bologna should begin in the bustling Piazza Maggiore, where people-watching is as much of an attraction as the rusticated palaces and the unfinished façade of the Basilica di San Petronio. Bologna's famous porticoes line the city's streets like sentinel guards and provide a handy shelter for window shoppers. It is easy, and often a pleasure, to lose one's bearings in the hotch-potch of medieval streets that radiate from Piazza Maggiore, but for a composite view of the red rooftops of Bologna, visitors should climb the Torre degli Asinelli, one of the two towers which lean drunkenly at the foot of Via Rizzoli. Bologna has many parks and open spaces, but the best way to escape the constant buzz of Vespas is to walk the 666 arches to the hilltop basilica of San Luca and breathe in the fresh air of the Apennines.
