Further Distractions Underground Atlanta The void under the viaducts of central Atlanta has been imaginatively reclaimed to make a suburban underground pleasure zone aimed at the young and trendy. Accessed by a fancy glass portico in a fountained square, the maze of semi-subterranean shops makes parting with your money quite pleasurable. Handcarts of souvenirs and titbits are pushed around the streets and, for true relaxation, it is possible to take a horse and buggy ride around central Atlanta. The cheerful, colourful food court is the place to try southern snacks or find a boutique restaurant. Suite 007, 50 Upper Alabama Street Tel: (404) 523 2311. Fax: (404) 523 0507. Transport: MARTA Five Points station. Opening hours: (shops) Mon-Sat 1000-2130, Sun 1200-1800. Oakland Cemetery This Civil War era cemetery (founded 1850) has been extended to cover 35 hectares (88 acres) of downtown Atlanta. The 3000 Confederate war dead, including three generals and a Vice President of the Confederacy, are commemorated by rows of headstones and an obelisk. They are remembered annually at a special ceremony (the weekend nearest to 26 April). Also interred here are Gone With The Wind author Margaret Mitchell, golfing legend Bobby Jones, six Georgia Governors, 25 Atlanta Mayors and assorted city fathers, often marked by extravagant Victorian statuary. Separate black and Jewish sections have their own contrasting iconography, which has stories to tell tales about the history of these groups in Atlanta. The lush Potter's Field is a setting for picnickers and joggers; volunteer-guided tours are available on Saturday and Sunday for a nominal charge. 248 Oakland Avenue SE Tel: (404) 688 2107.
