Ben Gurion International Airport is located near the Mediterranean coast about 20km (12.4 miles) southeast of Tel Aviv and about 50km (31 miles) west of Jerusalem. It is Israel's principal hub for international and domestic air traffic, with two terminals designed to handle up to twelve million passengers each year.

Major airlines: Israel's national airline is El Al (tel: (03) 971 6854 or 6954). Other major carriers with flights to and from Ben Gurion airport include Air Canada, British Airways, KLM - Royal Dutch Airlines and SAS Scandinavian Airlines.

Approximate flight times to Jerusalem: From London is 4 hours 30 minutes; from New York is 11 hours; from Los Angeles is 16 hours; from Toronto is 10 hours 30 minutes and from Sydney is 14 hours.

Airport facilities: Facilities include banks (24 hour), restaurants, duty-free shops, general shops and tourist information (24 hour). Avis, Budget, Eldan, Hertz, Eurodollar, Europcar and Thrifty all provide car hire services.

Business facilities: The Solan lounge (tel: (03) 979 2323) is available for general users of the airport, with fax facilities for hire. Passengers with Israel's El Al airline can use the King David lounge (tel: (03) 971 6892), while passengers with all other airlines have access to the Jet Set Club lounge (tel: (03) 971 2302).

Arrival/departure tax:
IS195 (included in the airfare).

Transport to the city:
Buses operated by the Egged Co-operative (tel: (03) 694 8888) to Jerusalem leave the airport every 30 minutes (0630-2210). The bus stops are located in the central plaza of Ben Gurion airport opposite parking lot number 1. Route numbers for Jerusalem are: 405 (direct), 423, 945 and 947. Tickets cost IS18.20 and can be bought on the bus (journey time - one hour). Taxis are located near the airport reception hall. Taxi fares to Jerusalem cost IS120-150 depending on traffic. The Nesher Company (tel: (02) 623 1231) runs a cheaper, shared taxi service between Ben Gurion Airport and Jerusalem, charging a fixed rate per passenger. For an extra charge, the taxi will take passengers and their baggage to anywhere in Jerusalem.
