Road Road Very few visitors to China attempt to drive around the country as most signs are in Chinese characters and, apart from the main Expressways and First Class Roads, the standard of the roads is varied. The driving of other road users is haphazard at the best of times and foreign drivers involved in accidents are always deemed to be at fault. Emergency breakdown service: There is no breakdown service in China. Drivers have to rely on assistance from other passing vehicles. Routes to the city: Main routes out of Beijing are denoted by city names such as the Beijing-Tianjin-Tanggu Expressway, Beijing-Shijiazhuang-Taiyuan Expressway, Beijing-Shenyang Expressway and Beijing-Chengde-Zhangjiakou First Class Road. Driving times to Beijing: from Tianjin - 2 hours; Chengde - 3 hours 30 minutes; Taiyuan - 6 hours. Coach services: Coach travel is very slow and rather uncomfortable combined; combine this with frequent breakdowns and limited routes , and it is much better to use the train. There are a number of bus stations in Beijing and each one serves just a few destinations so it is important to go to the correct one. There are few facilities at the bus stations and tickets should be bought in person at the ticket office. Zhaogongku (tel: (10) 67 22 94 91) serves Hangzhou, Harbin and Hohhot; Dongzhimen (tel: (10) 64 67 49 95) serves Chengde and Pinggu and Xizhimen (tel: (10) 62 18 34 54) serves Harbin and Shenyang. |
