Accommodation

For a little town, Avignon offers a wide range of luxury to budget hotels. The problem is that all of them are in high demand; the peak months are May, July and September; the build-up to Christmas is also popular. During the Avignon Festival (5-31 July 2000), booking months in advance is recommended. The Tourist Office offers information on special dormitory accommodation during the Festival, but it is worth considering hotels outside Avignon - accommodation in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, Ile de la Barthelasse, Le Pontet or Angles is nearby and remains peaceful during festival fever. On a positive note, hotel rooms in Avignon are usually plentiful in August.

Hotel and gîtes reservations throughout the Vaucluse can be made by telephone (tel: (04) 90 82 05 81). Hotel tax (tax de sÉjour), fixed at between FFr7-8 per night, is usually added to the bill.

The hotel boasts a Michelin-starred restaurant (see the Restaurant section); meeting room in the vaulted cellar, cooking courses, boutique and even a Roman well.

Jacques Chirac is a regular client at the Hotel d'Europe, situated in the former residence of the Marquis of Graeson, built in 1580. Open since 1799, this is Avignon's oldest hotel. Meals and Sunday brunch (except in August) are served within La Vieille Fontaine or in the charming courtyard shaded by a 250-year-old plane tree. All of the 44 rooms are decorated with antique furniture; the three suites overlook the Palais des Papes. The Stuart Mill Centre provides six meeting rooms; secretarial support is available on prior request. In addition to the private car park, the hotel provides limousine and car hire, and guided tours.

A peaceful atmosphere pervades at the 80-room Cloître St-Louis. The otherworldly cloisters, with their sixteenth-century façades, and the quiet garden contrast nicely with the sleek modernity of the new wing, added in 1991 by the French architect Jean Nouvel. Provençal restaurant St-Louis and covered car park are for guest use. If the two vaulted meeting rooms (10-200 people) do not suffice, the hotel can organise the hire of the nearby conference hall.
