Rail

Amtrak is the country's official passenger train company (tel: (800) USA RAIL or (215) 824 1600; web site: www.amtrak.com). Trains run to Memphis Central Station (tel: (901) 526 0052), which is located at 545 South Main Street. The station was built in 1914 and recently received a US$24 million renovation. It serves as a major passenger terminal and there are plans for retail outlets to open here.

Rail services:
Rail services are limited. However, the City of New Orleans train does connect Memphis with both Chicago and New Orleans. The journey from Memphis to Chicago takes 10 hours 30 minutes and a one-way ticket costs around US$93. It takes 8 hours 45 minutes to reach New Orleans and costs around US$55 one way.

Transport to the city:
The area around the station is quite rundown and visitors arriving by train are advised to take a taxi to their destination.
