Nightlife The best way to see Lyons' architectural heritage is by night when over 100 sites are illuminated. Like most international cities, Lyons has everything one can expect when it comes to nightlife. It has bars, clubs, café-theatres, a casino and many other features. Old Lyons, the banks of the Saone, the Presqu'île and Croix Rousse are the liveliest districts of Lyons at night. There is a wide variety of bars or pubs scattered all over the city and it is not always easy to choose between Irish, English, Latino, Cuban and exotic amongst the range of watering holes. There are also traditional Lyonnais bars. Cyber cafés are becoming ever more popular in Lyons, and these are generally open quite late. Bars can serve alcohol until 0300 and the minimum age for drinking is 18 years. The average price for a draught beer is about FFr13, and between FFr10 and FFr20 for a glass of wine in most bars in Lyons. Bars: The Albion, rue Ste-Catherine, is a popular English-style bar, with a giant screen for sporting events, a dartboard and a wide selection of draught beers. There are also concerts Friday to Sunday from 2130 (jazz, soul, rhythm and blues). The St James Pub, rue St-Jean, is a traditional Irish tavern, with Irish music, a dartboard and pool tables. Latin-style pubs, such as Café Cuba, place Tolozan, the Crystal Pub, quai Romain Rolland, or Le Moana, quai Pierre Scize, guarantee exotic decor and drinks. For a more traditional Lyonnais feel, there is Le Bar à Vin, rue de Crèqui, Café Prosper, rue Mulet, Le Cave des Voyageurs, place St-Paul, or Café du Soleil, rue St-Georges, is a typical Lyonnais café, with references to the famous local puppet Guignol in its decor. Casinos: There is one casino in Lyons, Le Lyon Vert, on avenue du Casino. It is open every day 1000-0400 and offers about 400 fruit machines, as well as blackjack, stud poker tables and roulette wheels. The luxurious surroundings entail a smart dress code. Clubs: There are many nightclubs in Lyons catering for all tastes, although smart dress is advised (no jeans or trainers). L'Alibi, 13 quai Romain Rolland, offers disco music on Tuesdays, ladies' night on Wednesdays and is the place for those who want to party. Another happening place is L'Odyssée, which is a disco set in a vault on place Carnot. The music is mainly jazz, blues, rock or funk. Live music: Le Bar de la Tour Rose is located on rue du Boeuf in an old Jeu de Paume dating from the thirteenth century and has an authentic chimney, panelling and comfortable sofas for decor. It holds jazz concerts and readings on Fridays and Saturdays at 2130 and serves traditional beverages, as well as cocktails and cigars. Gnome et Rhône, avenue de Saxe, with its garage-style decor with fuel pumps and motorbikes, hosts rock, funk and blues concerts. Eden Rock Café, rue Mercière, is an American-style café with rock, blues and country concerts. |
