Accommodation There are 37,000 hotel beds in Munich in 340 hotels - 17,000 of them are in the first-class and deluxe categories. The standard of service, cleanliness and hospitality is usually faultless, even in budget hotels, but room rates are among the highest in Germany and increase by about 25% during Oktoberfest and major international trade events. Alternative accommodation includes guesthouses, campsites and youth hostels. The Munich Key packages arranged by the tourist office combine accommodation in two- to five-star hotels with a number of other tourist services and discounts. It is a top-of-the-range option, which counts numerous celebrities among its former guests. The hotel has 396 rooms and suites, conference facilities for up to 1200 people and a business centre with serviced offices. Leisure facilities include a rooftop swimming pool. The Königshof boasts luxurious surroundings and one of the finest restaurants in Germany. The hotel enjoys a prime location on Karlsplatz, a few minutes from the Hauptbahnhof, and has its own underground parking. The Kempinski Hotel Airport is a startlingly modern building right in the heart of the airport complex, housing 343 sound-proofed rooms and 46 suites. TVs show up-to-the-minute flight schedules. Conference rooms range from simple meeting rooms to a huge ballroom, all with state-of-the-art technology. The business centre offers fax, computer and internet facilities, as well as secretarial, translation and interpreting services. The Hilton occupies an uninspiring modern building in a beautiful location on the edge of the Englischer Garten. There are 477 rooms and 21 suites. Free notebook computers are available and there is an Executive Floor with separate check-in. The hotel is very popular with business travellers due to its comprehensive conference facilities for up to 2700 delegates, including audiovisual equipment and translation services. There are extensive leisure facilities and three good-quality restaurants on site: the top-class Hilton Grill, the more informal Isar Restaurant and the Chinese Tse Yang restaurant. This small hotel boasts an elegant and subdued atmosphere and a lovely setting on the banks of the River Isar. The Deutsches Museum is a short walk away. Just across the road from the Hauptbahnhof, this hotel is geared towards the needs of the business traveller but would also suit leisure travellers who want to be close to the action. All rooms are en suite and some include faxes and answering machines. An early-bird breakfast is served from 0545 and free coffee is available at all hours in the Coffee Corner. This hotel is within staggering distance of the Theresienwiese, and so a perfect choice for Oktoberfest - advance booking is essential. Visitors who are sick of uniform hotel rooms in non-descript buildings should enjoy staying at this guesthouse on the edge of the Englischer Garten - the building is a converted watermill from the eighteenth century. There are 27 rooms, although some are located in a cheaper but less appealing annexe near the main building. The guesthouse serves breakfast, but visitors will have to explore the numerous restaurants and bars in Schwabing for their evening meal. |
