Norwegian State Railways (NSB) (tel: 2315 0000 (booking line); fax: 2315 3679; website: www.nsb.no) operate clean and comfortable, although rather slow, trains. Four run daily between from Oslo and Bergen, with a journey time of approximately seven hours. From autumn 2001, a fast new type of train called Signatur is to be introduced, cutting the journey time to about 4 hours 30 minutes. Heavy luggage is best sent in advance and seats on express services must be reserved at extra cost before travelling.

Rail services: The ScanRail Pass offers 21 days of unlimited travel on railways and selected ferries throughout Scandinavia. InterRail tickets are valid in Norway and Bergen is linked to many European cities via Oslo. Bergen's railway station is at Strømgaten 4 (tel: 5596 6900; fax: 5596 6061).
