Accommodation Of the 5000 rooms in Cannes, almost half are deluxe or four-star. The four 'palaces' - the Belle Epoque Carlton and Majestic, Art Deco Martinez and ultra-modern Noga Hilton - dominate La Croisette and have their own private beaches. Their bars, restaurants (the best in the city), bistros and sometimes even swimming pools are open to the public, although security tightens during the International Film Festival. Also available are inexpensive modern chain hotels situated by the Cannes-La Bocca AÉrodrome to the west, 17 rÉsidences (residential hotels) offering self-service accommodation and 3000 flats and apartments. During the International Film Festival and in summer, prices and demand rise steeply and it is necessary to book well in advance. Accommodation can be booked via a central reservation number (tel: (04) 08 10 06 12 12) 0900-1900 Monday to Saturday. Majestic Hotel 14 La Croisette, BP 163, 06407 Cannes Tel: (04) 92 98 77 00. Fax: (04) 93 38 97 90. E-mail: majestic@mcn.mc Cost: FFr1290-4600. The Majestic, still furnished in the Belle Epoque style, is the closest palais to the Palais des Festivals. The hotel lacks the warmth of the Martinez but is a favourite with GÉrard Depardieu (who reputedly likes to eat with the chef in the kitchens). All of its 304 rooms (with 23 suites) have been renovated. The hotel offers boutiques, bureau de change, hairdresser, sporting and fitness facilities, two restaurants, including the gourmet Villa des Lys, and the Bar des Stars. Eight meeting rooms are available for conferences and seminars and the Croisette Salon has a capacity of 430-1000 people. Hôtel Martinez 73 La Croisette, 06406 Cannes Tel: (04) 92 98 73 00. In spite of being the largest hotel in Cannes, this palais creates a personalised atmosphere where one feels immediately 'at home', especially in the intimate Amiral piano bar. The Palme d'Or restaurant has two stars in the Michelin guide. There is a conference area of over 2500 sq metres (27,000 sq ft) divided into 15 salons. Famous guests include the Archduke Franz-Joseph of Vienna and Christopher Reeve. Carlton Intercontinental 58 La Croisette, BP 155, 06406 Cannes Tel: (04) 93 06 40 06. Fax: (04) 93 06 40 25. Stars pose in Le Bar des CÉlÉbrities or withdraw to the privacy of the hotel's 338 rooms, which include 28 suites. Its 229 rooms (including 47 suites) are designed in an octagon around a large open hall surmounted by a pyramid, upon which sits the rooftop swimming pool. The restaurant, La Scala, offers excellent views onto La Croisette, while Le Panorama serves snack lunches by the swimming pool.
