Accommodation There are almost 6000 hotel rooms, including B&Bs, within a three kilometre (two-mile) radius of the city centre, and around 10,500 rooms throughout the Edinburgh and Lothian region. The huge range of properties include ancient castles, elegant town houses, modern motels and traditional B&Bs where a warm Scottish welcome is assured. During the Edinburgh International Festival (three weeks in August/ September), accommodation in the city is booked up months in advance, so it is necessary to plan well ahead. Close to the centre of town, this elegant hotel was created from three Georgian houses, and has a private club ambience. All 15 rooms are spacious and have luxurious bathrooms. Close to Waverley station, the Balmoral has an imposing Edwardian exterior, with a landmark clock tower that has always been set several minutes fast so that guests do not miss their train. The architectural highlight is Adam's trademark domed cupola in the roof of the opulent Carvers restaurant, but the gourmets prefer the food at Le Chambertin, which is a favourite for business lunches. Five Edwardian terraced houses make up this elegant but cosy hotel in a smart neighbourhood, just minutes from the west end of Princes Street. The 48 bedrooms are attractively decorated using restrained colours and antiques; some have great views of Fife. The public areas have a distinct club feel to them, with the Brasserie offering excellent value, especially at lunchtime. Up to 35 delegates can be accommodated for a theatre-style conference. The classic exterior of Point Hotel belies the minimalist interior, which was designed by architect Andrew Doolan, who also owns the hotel. Those who crave clean lines, sweeping curved walls and coloured lighting will want to stay here. The white bedrooms, with black leather furniture, have a simple, oriental feel, while the bathrooms are huge. The Monboddo bar is one of Edinburgh's trendier nightspots.
