Walking Tours : Like most American cities, Memphis is not really geared towards pedestrians and it is only the downtown area that can be explored on foot. Memphis Explorations offers a walking tour of 'Elvis' Memphis' on Saturdays from April to October. The tour lasts three hours and includes more than 20 Elvis sites including his teenage home at Lauderdale Courts (tel: (901) 761 1838; web site: www.elvistyle.com). Tours start at the Elvis statue on Beale Street and leave at 1000. They cost US$10 per person plus trolley fare.

Bus Tours : Blues City Tours (tel: (901) 522 9229) operates daily tours of Memphis. The trips last half a day and include all the main attractions, with pick-ups available from all hotels. A general city tour costs US$18 and a Graceland tour costs US$25-33. Gray Line (tel: (901) 384 3474) coaches offer several tours including a 'Memphis City Tour' costing US$22 and an 'Elvis Tribute Tour' costing US$35. Pick-ups are available from all Memphis hotels. Tours last three hours.

Other Tours : A trip on the Mississippi is one of the most relaxing tours available. Memphis Queen Line (tel: (901) 527 5694) runs 90-minute sightseeing cruises in traditional paddle-boats. Tours leave from the cobblestones at the foot of Union Avenue on the river and cost US$12.50. American Dream Safari (tel: (901) 527 8870) runs specialist tours of Memphis in a 1955 Cadillac. As well as offering half-day city tours, they offer extended tours to help visitors explore the area in more detail. A city tour costs US$50 and a 'Delta Day Trip' costs US$175 (two people minimum). Memphis Explorations (tel: (901) 761 1838) run driving tours of Memphis, including a full-day trip to Tupelo to see Elvis' birthplace. Prices on request.
