Atlanta's airport, Hartsfield, is the national and international gateway to Atlanta. Situated 14.5km (nine miles) south of the city, the airport underwent a programme of improvement in the run-up to the 1996 Olympic Games and now handles 72 million domestic passengers plus five million international passengers annually - which makes it the busiest airport in the world.

Major airlines:
Atlanta is the hub and home base of Delta Airlines (tel: (800) 221 1212; web site: www.delta-air.com); their flights constitute an estimated 60-70% of Hartsfield's traffic, connecting Atlanta to all major US cities, the Caribbean and Mexico, Europe and other international destinations. Other important domestic carriers include Continental, TWA, United Airlines, US Airways; while international carriers include British Airways, Japan Airlines, KLM, Lufthansa, and Swissair.

From London is 9 hours 15 minutes; from New York is 2 hours 20 minutes; from Los Angeles is 4 hours 45 minutes; from Toronto is 2 hours 15 minutes; from Sydney is 14 hours.

Airport facilities:
These include fast-food outlets and licenced restaurants; retail shops supplying everything from alcohol to stationery, a post office, an interdenominational chapel, bank, ATMs, bureaux de change, tourist information and car hire operators, including Alamo, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, National and Thrifty.

: Hartsfield has an executive conference centre (tel: (404) 761 6116; fax: (404) 530 4251), with meeting rooms, computers, tele-conferencing and audiovisual equipment. The centre can supply limousine services and catering for groups.

Transport to the city:
The five airport concourses are linked by nine underground trains, which run on a five-kilometre (3.5-mile) track with 13 stops; indicator boards advise the train's route. This connects with the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transport Authority (MARTA) airport shuttle services, which run daily 0500-0100, from the airport to downtown and throughout the metropolitan area. Travel time is 15 minutes to Five Points (city centre) and a single journey costs US$1.50. Schedules may be obtained from Traveler's Aid (tel: (404) 848 4711), the MARTA Airport Station, and the International Information Counter. Taxi services take 15 minutes to Five Points; fares vary from US$18 to US$24 according to number of passengers and the amount of luggage.
