Sport Dallas prides itself on being a big name in professional sport, although this reputation is really carried solely by the Dallas Cowboys Pro Football team (tel: (972 579 5000; website: www.dallascowboys.com). The season is August-December and the Texas Stadium is in the western suburb of Irving. The Dallas Stars Professional Ice Hockey team are a good side despite Dallas being anything but a winter city (tel: (214) 467 8277). They play at the Reunion Arena, which is also home to the Dallas Mavericks Professional Basketball team (tel: (972) 988 3865). The pro baseball team is the Texas Rangers (tel: (817) 273 5100), whose season is April-October. Their Ballpark in Arlington complex also has a museum and acres of parkland. The still-developing sport of soccer is represented by the Dallas Burn Major League Soccer team who play at the Cotton Bowl (tel: (214) 979 0303). The other soccer team is the Dallas Sidekicks who are based alongside the Cowboys at the Texas Stadium. Horses are very much part of the Texas psyche. Suburban Mesquite is home to the Championship Rodeo (tel: (972) 285 8777) in April-October and thoroughbred horseracing is held at Lone Star Park (tel: (972) 263 7223). The Dallas City Parks & Recreation Department (tel: (214) 670 4100) can provide more information on the city's 550 recreational facilities and its 406 parks. Recreation centres: Dallas has 43 recreation centres, each with a variety of traditional recreational activities, including athletics, sports, summer playground camps and cultural events.
