Key Attractions Fløibanen Funicular Railway The Fløiban has been carrying people 320m (1050ft) up the Fløyfjell Mountain for more than 80 years. The trip takes ten minutes. Views over the city and offshore islands from the summit are spectacular. There is a restaurant (summer only) and shops at the top, as well as mountain walkways. Ulriksbanen Cable Car Every seven minutes, the cable car transports passengers 642m (2106ft) up to the summit of Mount Ulriken, the highest of Bergen's seven mountains. From the top, there is a panoramic view of the surrounding area. A popular, four-hour walk leads from here to the summit of Mount Fløien. Ulriken 1 Tel: 5529 3160. Fax: 5520 2065. Transport: From mid-May to mid-Sep, a shuttle bus runs every 30 minutes (0915-2245) from the Tourist Information Centre in the city. Otherwise, bus 2, 4 or 7 leave from the main post office or bus 50 from Bryggen. Opening hours: Daily summer 0900-2100; winter 1000-1700. Admission: NOK90 (including the shuttle bus in summer). Bryggen (Wharfside) In 1980, UNESCO listed Bergen's Hanseatic wharf area as one of the world's most significant examples of the history and culture of a medieval settlement. Although many of the buildings were ravaged by fire through the centuries, they have been carefully restored to their original state. Today, Bryggen is a lively mix of restaurants, cafÉs and artists' workshops. At the eastern end is the Torget, Bergen's picturesque market where fish, fruit, vegetables, flowers, handicrafts and souvenirs are sold. The market is open Mon-Fri 0700-1600 (Thurs until 1900) and Sat 0700-1500. Hanseatiske Museum The Hanseatic Museum is housed in one of the oldest wooden buildings in Bryggen, it was razed to the ground in 1702 but subsequently rebuilt. Admission: May-Sep NOK35, Oct-Apr.NOK20 Bryggens Museum After the destruction in of several Hanseatic houses in 1955, archaeologists excavated the area and unearthed the remains of the oldest settlement ever discovered in Bergen (dating from the twelfth century). Akvariet I Bergen (Bergen Aquarium) On the tip of the peninsula, the Bergen Aquarium contains one of the finest and most extensive collections of marine fauna in Europe. Gamle Bergen (Old Bergen) This open-air museum depicts eighteenth- and nineteenth-century town life. Transport: A seven-minute ride from the city centre on bus 19, 20, 21 or 22; or any red bus going to Sandviken. Opening hours: Daily mid-May to mid-Sep 1000-1600. Entrance to the houses can only be made as part of a guided tour that leaves on the hour, every hour. Admission: The museum area and park are free of charge, the guided tour costs NOK40 (concessions available). Mariakirken (St Mary's Church) This is Bergen's oldest building - dating from the first half of the twelfth century - and one of the most outstanding examples of a Romanesque church in the country.
