1. Introduction

URLsync is a database application to track your favorite internet URLs, usernames, passwords of subscribed sites and additional notes on your PalmPilot(TM). It is created with Brad Goodman's PalmFactory Development Tool.

Features include

  • easy to use
  • supports categories to organize your favorite URLs like Internet Explorer favorites folders
  • runs on any Palm Computing® organizer
  • ability to save your desktop favorites to URLSync Palm db format (if you purchase URL sync Desktop tool)

2. Requirements & Installation

The URLsync should work on any Palm device with any Palm™ OS version and takes about 20 kb of memory. Additional memory is needed to store the site information. Each site requires about 120-140 bytes without a note:

number of
sites
memory required
(approx.)

60

7.5 k
100  13 k
400  55 k

To install the application, first use a standard unzip utility to extract all the files and run the PalmPilot™ Install Tool. Select the "urlsync.prc" file provided and the next time you HotSync, the application will be loaded into your PalmPilot™. If you also install the "CatExample.pdb" and "UrlExample.pdb" files you can see what the application look like.

3. Usage

The Main Screen

Once URLSync has been installed, tap on its icon to launch it. You will see a similar screen as in figure 1.

If you installed the example database files the screen will look like figure 1.

Each line in the list represents one site and displays its description and URL. The dropdown box represents categories (favorite folders)

To change the category of the current site, you can tap the dropdown list and choose a new category.

Database Backup

Unfortunately, the databases created with the URLsync application will not be automatically backed up to your PC during a HotSync. (unless you have a backup solution like BackupBuddy NG) .You have to manually set the backup bit using one of the available free tools . My favorite is ZarfCatalog.

After that in case of a crash they will be restored automatically.

The names of the database files are UrlSyncCat.pdb and UrlSyncUrl.pdb and can be found in the HotSync Directory BACKUP
(for example c:\pilot\<your name>\backup\UrlSyncCat.pdb).

Note: If you use the URL sync desktop tool, backup bits of generated databases are automatically set and remains so. (providing subsequent backups)

4. Known bugs and Limitations

The below bugs and limitations are directly related to PalmFactory development environment and I am fully dependent to author of it. If a new version comes out without these bugs, I will release a new version of this application as well.

1-Never tap "Del" button while you creating a new record (URL or Category Entry screens). You will receive an error and you might be forced to soft reset the Palm Pilot. Instead, create the record, browse it, and delete.

2-When the Category field is pulled down, the width of the dropdown box equals the width of the currently selected category. This means is that the dropdown box does not display all of the text if a short value has been previously selected.

3-Sometimes categories shown on the URLs Entry screen (in record detail) are mangled and ends with a square character. If this is the case I advice you to select dropdown list and correct the category entry, otherwise that record will not belong to a known category.

4-Clipboard functions are not available.(You cannot use copy paste commands, but by using one of the clipboard hacks, it is possible to paste something on a field. My favorite clipboard hack is MultiClip)

5-HW up-down buttons are not functional. Instead of them use the up-down arrows on the screen.

6- Searching the database is not supported.

5. The complementary desktop tool

The "URL Sync Desktop tool" for MS Internet Explorer Users can be purchased at PalmGear H.Q. (It is a $5.0 ShareWare and fully functional for 15 days trial period )
