Description

Thank you for trying TealEcho. This is a simple application that provides a visual on-screen reference to make entering of graffiti characters more intuitive and error-free.

One of the unfortunate limitations of the PalmPilot is the fact that the display area doesn't extend down to the text entry area. Consequently, you aren't shown the actual stroke you're entering, leading to more mistakes than would ordinarily occur.

Basically, what TealEcho does is add this capability to your Pilot. When you write a letter or number into the graffiti area, your strokes are echoed as an overlay in the display area above, giving you instant feedback about your stroke. When you lift the pen, the overlay is erased, leaving just the normal display.

TealEcho uses the HackMaster System Extensions Manager by Edward Keyes (*See references below). This is a safe and standard way to add and manage extended system functionality on the Pilot.

Use the Pilot installer to install the program file TEALECHO.PRC and HACKMSTR.PRC. TealEcho will not appear as a standard program of it's own, but instead is activated through HackMaster. To turn on TealEcho, simply click on the HackMaster icon in the applications launcher, and click on the checkmark next to the TealEcho entry in the Hacks list.

Configure Window

TealEcho supports a number of options to let you customize its behavior and appearance. The TealEcho configure window can be found inside the application Hackmaster. Open it by starting Hackmaster and tapping on the '+' (plus) button next to the 'TealEcho' entry in the list of system extensions.

The following options are supported:

Use thicker line
Draws your stroke with a wider ink line for easier visibility
Clear background
Erases a rectangle behind the graffiti stroke when you write so it's easier to see
Show frame
Show an outline frame around the stroke corresponding to the graffiti area
Thick frame
When the above option is active, renders the outline frame with double-width lines
Force bg erase
Performs a null drawing operation around the drawing stroke to force the third-party system extension BackDropEZ to redraw the screen around the stroke.
Draw in corner
Draws the graffiti stroke and optional rectangle shifted to the left side of the screen, away from the user's hand.
Use LR corner
When the above option is on, shifts the stroke to the right instead for left-handed users.

Compatibility

As we cannot control the style and robustness of other products, we cannot guarantee compatibility with PalmPilot applications beyond those included from Palm Computing. However, we try to resolve compatibility issues as best we can.

Defragger
Be sure to disable TealEcho before running a memory management program like Defragger or Recycle.
BackdropEZ
Turn off TealEcho first before enabling BackdropEZ. Then, turn it back on afterwards. Also, check the 'Force bg erase' option in the TealEcho preferences screen. This should catch most screen erase problems, but EZBackdrop might still miss some in fast-changing displays.

Using the Program

Once installed, Simply write in the graffiti area. Your stroke should appear in the lower middle region of the display as you write.
