What is IP Radar?

IP Radar is a Shareware program designed to help you keep track of and find your friends anywhere on the Internet the moment they connect!

How Does It Work?

IP Radar uses a proprietary method to send quick messages across the Internet. These IP Radar 'bursts' can be recognized by any other IP Radar.

When one IP Radar finds another IP Radar on the Internet, they quickly exchange information to see if you have found a friend you are looking for (who is also looking for you).

The moment IP Radar determines that it has found your friend, it notifies you and your friend of your respective IP addresses.

What Can IP Radar Do For You?

There are many advantages to knowing the IP address of an Internet user. Programs such as FTP (File Transfer Protocol) and IDC (Internet Direct Chat) allow you to communicate directly across the Internet from point to point.

Some FTP sites are private and 'go up' at varying times and using different IP addresses. With IP Radar, you can 'roam' for these sites and find them (if they want you to) whenever they are 'up'.

The Internet is Vast - Is IP Radar Fast?

YES - IP Radar is extremely fast at locating your friends anywhere on the Internet!

What makes this possible is the fact that even dial-up accounts (which offer different IP addresses each time) produce IP addresses within a fixed range. In other words, the first three digits of most dial-up IP addresses are always the same - only the last digit changes (if at all).

So to find a friend, IP Radar has to scan only the range of the last digit of your friend's IP address - and that just takes a moment!

And What About Privacy?

IP Radar is designed to enable friends who are looking for each other to find ONLY each other on the Internet. This is accomplished (and secured) using Password Pairs.

IP Radar friends are identified by their E-Mail address (or some other chosen ID name). In addition, for each friend there are TWO passwords - the password your friend must use to contact you, and the password you must use to contact your friend.

In order to make a match, IP Radar must find correct IDs and passwords on BOTH ends of the match! In addition, you may also choose which of your friends you are looking for at any time.

Getting Started

To use IP Radar, you need to create a directory on your hard drive and copy all of the files included with IP Radar into that Directory.

To start IP Radar, from Windows, you must run the program file IPRADAR.EXE. You can do this by selecting 'File|Run' from either the Program or File Manager.

Once the program is running you should see a main control form as shown below:

Setting Up IP Radar

Before, you can use IP Radar to find your friends, you must enter some information about yourself and your friends.

Identifying Yourself

In order for your friends to be able to look for you and recognize you when you are looking for them, you need to enter your name and e-mail address.

'My Real Name'
Enter your real name (or nickname) here (eg. 'Smith, John', 'Barny' or 'Jane Doe').

'My E-Mail Address'
This field is important. Whatever you enter here is what your friends' IP Radars will be looking for (eg. 'afarth@supernet.com').

Adding Internet Friends

The whole point of IP Radar is to let you quickly find your friends on the Internet. Before you can do that, you must identify your friends.

To Add a Friend...
Click on the 'Add' button on the main control form. This will bring up the 'Add Internet (IP) Friend' form as shown below:

Identifying Your Friends

'Friend's Real Name'
Enter your friend's real name (or nickname) here (eg. 'Smith, John', 'Barny' or 'Jane Doe').

'Friend's E-Mail Address'
This field is important. You must enter whatever your friend has entered on their IP Radar as their E-Mail Address (eg. 'jbarret@acmenet.com').

'Password I Must Use to Contact Friend'
What you enter here is the password that your IP Radar will be sending to your friend (eg. 'HEYJAN').

'Password Friend Must Use to Contact Me'
This is the password that you are going to expect your friend's IP Radar to send you (eg. 'HEYALLEN').

'IP Address Information of Friend'
IP Radar needs to know a bit about where to find your friend. If your friend 'dials in' to get Internet access, they will probably be assigned a different IP address each time. Actually only the last (4th) digit will be different - this is the key to how IP Radar finds your friend each time.

'Partial (Changing) Address'
You will need to know at least the first three digits of your friend's IP address.

'Complete Address'
If your friend always gets the same IP address, then you can enter all four digits and IP Radar will find them even quicker when they go on-line.

Finding Your Friends with IP Radar

Once you have added one (or more) friends, you are almost ready to turn IP Radar ON.

IP Access
In order to search the Internet for your friends you must be connected to it before running IP Radar.

Selecting Which Friends to Find

IP Radar ON works Silently and in the Background
The moment you turn IP Radar ON, your friends will be able to find you (if you are looking for them), and IP Radar will sweep the Internet to quickly find the friends you are looking for - all in the background! You can do other things while IP Radar does its job. Whenever a friend is found, both you and your friend will be alerted and given your respective IP addresses.

Turning IP Radar OFF
When you have found all your friends, you can turn IP Radar OFF by clicking the 'Radar OFF' button.
