LDS Family History Centers throughout the world now offer personal
computers for their patrons to use. Each computer has a copy of
the IGI (International Genealogical Index) on compact disc. The
user is able to select IGI records and save them to floppy disk in
one of two formats: as text(ASCII) files or GEDCOM files. However,
these files are hard to work with. Most people are only able to
use them in PAF (Personal Ancestral File). This is hard work due
to the thousands of 2-generation pedigree charts created by
Genealogical Information Exchange while converting the file to PAF
format.
GIPSI offers a better solution by converting the GEDCOM file into
a file capable of being used in databases and spreadsheets. Most
databases and spreadsheets allow you to search, filter, and sort
records. Thus the user may be able to have a giant library of IGI
records that are easy to work with. In this fashion one could:
obtain all records from a particular city or parish; see all
events occurring between two dates; etc. GIPSI provides services
through easy to use windows and pop-up menus.
PLEASE NOTE: GEDCOM files created from the IGI and SSDI have a
format unlike most GEDCOM files, a format GIPSI relies upon.
Files that are not created from the IGI or are not in GEDCOM 2.1
format will not work with GIPSI.
