  1. Winsmile - Copyright 1993 Wellsoft.  Winsmile is shareware.

  3. Welcome to Winsmile!  Winsmile builds your self-esteem by
  4. displaying affirmations on your computer screen.  You can
  5. adjust the font size, the sound, the timing, and other
  6. features to your own liking.  You can even make your own
  7. affirmation files.
  8.  
  9. Affirmations are short, positive statements, usually in the
  10. first person ("I" statements).  The use of affirmations is a
  11. proven time-tested method of self-help. 
  12.  
  13. If you have downloaded Winsmile from a BBS: it may be
  14. necessary to first unzip the Winsmile files to a floppy
  15. disk, and install Winsmile from the floppy disk.
  16.  
  17. It's easy to install Winsmile:
  18.     1. Insert Winsmile disk #1 (there may be just one)
  19.        into your computer.
  20.     2. From Windows, if you haven't already, bring up the
  21.        Program Manager.
  22.     3. Click on "File".  ("File" is in the upper left corner
  23.        of Program Manager.)
  24.     4. Click on "Run".
  25.     5. In the command line box:
  26.           1. If your Winsmile disk is in drive A, then type
  27.              A:SETUP.
  28.           2. But if your Winsmile disk is in drive B, then type
  29.              B:SETUP.
  30.     6. Winsmile will install itself.  The only decision you need
  31.        to make is whether to install the sound files.  (If you
  32.        have a sound card that can play .WAV files, or if you're
  33.        not sure, then install the sound files.)
  34.     7. When Winsmile is installed, run Winsmile by double-
  35.        clicking on the Winsmile icon in the Program Manager.                                            
  36.     8. From anywhere in Winsmile, you can get help by pressing the
  37.        F1 key.

  39. TIMING
  40. When Winsmile is first installed, each message is displayed for
  41. 8 seconds.  The time between messages is set to 20 seconds.  This
  42. way shows you how Winsmile works.  Once you're comfortable with
  43. Winsmile's operation, you may want to set the timing between
  44. messages to a much longer time, typically 5 minutes or more.

  46. SOUND FILES
  47.     You can play the sound files if
  48.         1. Your computer has a sound card capable of playing
  49.            .WAV files, and
  50.         2. Your Windows has software that enables the sound
  51.            card to play .WAV files.
  52.     The rule is: if your Window's Media Player will play .WAV
  53.     files, then Winsmile can play its .WAV files.
  54.     If Winsmile can't play its .WAV files, then it will beep
  55.     instead.  (You can always turn the sound or the beep off.)

  57. MAKE YOUR OWN AFFIRMATION FILES
  58. Winsmile's affirmations are in a file named AFIRMS20.TXT.
  59. AFIRMS20.TXT is a simple text file - you can edit it, or
  60. make your own with any word processing program (like Window's
  61. Notepad or Write).  Put a blank line between each affirmation
  62. or message.  Remember to save your file as a .TXT file
  63. in your Winsmile directory.

  65. You can also use Winsmile to remind to of anything you would
  66. like to be reminded of.  An example of this is in file
  67. REMINDER.TXT.

  81. DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE - WHAT IS SHAREWARE?
  82. Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
  83. before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue
  84. using it, you are expected to register. Individual programs
  85. differ on details -- some request registration while others
  86. require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
  87. registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue
  88. using the software to an updated program with printed manual.

  90. Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software,
  91. and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
  92. exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
  93. programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are
  94. of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs
  95. and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
  96. distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy
  97. and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
  98. specific group. For example, some authors require written
  99. permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their
  100. Shareware.

  102. Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
  103. should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
  104. whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes
  105. fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.
  106. And because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware
  107. has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the
  108. product, you don't pay for it.

  111. Users of Winsmile must accept this disclaimer of warranty:
  112. "Winsmile is supplied as is.  The author disclaims all
  113. warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation,
  114. the warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any purpose.
  115. The author assumes no liability for damages, direct or conse-
  116. quential, which may result from the use of Winsmile."

  118. Winsmile is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge
  119. to the user for evaluation.  Feel free to share it with your
  120. friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of
  121. another system.  The essence of "user-supported" software is to
  122. provide personal computer users with quality software without
  123. high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
  124. continue to develop new products.

  126. If you find this program useful and find that you are using
  127. Winsmile and continue to use Winsmile after a reasonable trial
  128. period, you must make a registration payment of $24.95 to Wellsoft.
  129. The $24.95 registration fee will license one copy for use on any one
  130. computer at any one time.  You must treat this software just like
  131. a book.  An example is that this software may be used by any
  132. number of people and may be freely moved from one computer
  133. location to another, so long as there is no possibility of it
  134. being used at one location while it's being used at another.
  135. Just as a book cannot be read by two different persons at the
  136. same time.

  138. Winsmile will print a registration form for you, or you can use
  139. the included text file REGISTER.FRM.

  141. Commercial users of Winsmile must register and pay for their
  142. copies of Winsmile within 30 days of first use or their license
  143. is withdrawn.  Site-License arrangements may be made by con-
  144. tacting Wellsoft.

  146. Anyone distributing Winsmile for any kind of renumeration must
  147. first contact Wellsoft at the address above for authorization.
  148. This authorization will be automatically granted to distributors
  149. recognized by the Association of Shareware Professionals (ASP) as
  150. adhering to its guidelines for shareware distributors.  Such
  151. distributors may begin offering Winsmile immediately.  Wellsoft
  152. must still be advised so that the distributor can be kept up-to-
  153. date with the latest version of Winsmile.

  156. friends for evaluation.  Please encourage them to register their
  157. copy if they find that they can use it.  All users will receive
