#TPerformance Anxiety Management
#C2,R5
Sometimes our body seems as if it were in revolt during stressful times.
Coping with performance and audition fears is a subject that has to be
addressed by some of us.~H By far the most effective means of reducing
anxiety is to be fully prepared for the occasion.~N However, simply being
prepared is not enough. There are difficult concerts and stressful auditions
to deal with. Some of the coping strategies include self-talk, relaxation
techniques, diet and medication. None of the strategies can completely
eliminate the stress of stagefright. Performance stress is more an attitude,
and relaxation techniques or diet cannot change our view of performance. Yet
all of the strategies can minimize the detrimental effects.

One very effective medication is~H Propranolol (Inderal).~N Inderal belongs
within the family of medication known as beta-adrenergic blocking agents,
or "beta-blockers." It is traditionally used to treat high blood pressure,
angina, certain heart conditions, and migraines. Of interest to musicians
is its effectiveness in reducing symptoms of anxiety and stagefright. The
dosage would be determined by the prescribing physician but is normally in
the 40 to 160 mg/day range. There are patients with prior conditions that
restrict its use, however, it is~H an effective non-habit forming medicine~N
that is readily prescribed and in wide use today.
