- What is NewNews?
-
- NewNews is a small utility that displays news bulletins to the user, but
- only if the bulletin's date is after the last time the user has logged in.
- You can take a quick look at NewNews by starting SEENEWS.BAT.
- This displays the sample news file NEWS.TXT.
-
- This version of NewNews can only be used with Remote Access V2.xx.
- You may use and distribute NewNews freely as long as NO changes are made
- to any file, and the contents of the original archive are obtained!
-
- What is new in version 1.1?
-
- In this release of NewNews you can choose two alternative colour-sets:
- With commandline option /Plain NewNews will display only black/white and
- gray, with /A you get an alternative color-set.
-
- I used the new RADU version gamma-3, maybe this works better at
- some systems.. I hope!
- I dropped the ALT-E function, if you think that is a pitty, please say so.
- The EXE is quite a bit smaller without it...
-
- Also in this release: The Online-message display-routine from UserQuest.
- Get the feel of UserQuest: write an on-line message to a user that is
- reading your bulletins, you'll be surprised!
-
-
- How do I order this fantastic program?
-
- You simply DON'T, because you've already got it.
- It's totally free, but comes as is. No guarantee is given that the
- program does what it should do, or that it does what you want it to do.
- Use it at your own risk, if the program breakes in two or more pieces, you
- own them all. If the program, or any file that came with it, ruines your
- system or causes any other trouble in any way, the author can NOT be held
- responsible for it, nor can he be held responsible for anything that happens
- or doesn't happen while using the program or even while NOT using it. :-)
-
-
- How to Install it?
-
- Just create a Type 7 menu option in Remote Access
- You might want to add the *M option so RA will swap before calling the
- program, but this was not nessecary at my system.
- NewNews looks for the file NEWS.TXT in your RA TXTfiles directory.
- This file must contain plain ascii text in this format:
-
- DD/MM
- Header
- Text
- /***/
-
- There is a sample NEWS.TXT in the package for all you nerts that didn't get
- the format (Sorry guys:-)).
-
- Next:
- You can create a NEWS.ASC in the TXTfiles directory,
- in witch you put a line like this:
- C:\RA\DOORS\NEWNEWS.EXE|
- This will cause RA to start my Door at the same point the NEWS.ASC is
- beeing displayed. The DOOR does the rest.
- Make sure you haven't got a NEWS.ANS or NEWS.AVT in that directory!
-
- The disadvantage of this method is that if users log in using IEMSI they can
- disable the news, there is a suggestion in the RA.DOC, but I forgot; it had
- something to do with a ASC/ANS/AVT file that is displayed if the user
- DOESN't want to see the news. Was it ALTNEWS.A?? ?
- Maybe you can make an extra ASC with that name that looks like this:
-
- | You are a complete and utter stupid fool to think you could get around
- | the news-bulletins at my system!!!
- |
- | Press [ENTER] to see it anyway, if any:
- | C:\RA\DOORS\NEWNEWS.EXE|
-
- And of course you can display this nice message in the desired language,
- can anyone send me any rude swear words in other languages? (joke)
-
- To be complete, I'll tell you how I've installed NewNews myself:
- I have a TOP menu that has two _automatic_ functions:
- - Shell and start a batch file DOALL.BAT with a type 7 menu option
- - GOTO menu MAIN
-
- With this batch file I do several things, like for instance
- running NewNews. The adventage is that RA will only swap once
- and can do several things!
-
- Oh, and then there are some commandline options I have to mention:
- /All This will display all bulletins to the user, this is used to put
- on the BBS as an option 'Read the bulletins' or something.
- The user can quit reading after every bulletin by pressing [X].
- /Use FILE Use FILE instead of the NEWS.TXT in the TXT directory.
- But FILE must be a complete path plus filename, e.g:
- /Use C:\RA\ALTNEWS.TXT
- /Plain Will startup with almost no colors, it's still ANSI, but B&W.
- /Alt Will startup with an alternative colorset, a bit lighter.
-
- And there is an extra function I built in that has nothing to do with the
- news, here it is:
- You can display a ASC/ANS/AVT-file (NOTICE.A??) to a user, if he or she
- has a securitylevel lower than a particular level, and after a
- particular number of calls.
- There are two commandline options used here:
- /Level X
- /Times X
- /Modulo X
- The X must be a number, e.g. /Level 101 /Times 20 will show the file
- NOTICE.A?? to all users with level 0 to 100 that have called your system
- more than 20 times.
- The /Modulo option is to show the text once every X times only.
- What is this for? Well, I use it to display a text like 'You have called
- this BBS .. times, and still you haven't become a donator!' :-)
- This function is executed just after the news.
-
- And finally:
- Good luck with this utility, please also consider using UserQuest, the
- ultimate User Questionnaire door for RA 2.xx. This questionnaire has many,
- many features, like a Sysop tool that shows all new users and what they
- entered, but there is so much more, you should see it yourself!
- UserQuest is shareware, and a lot beter than this util that was written on
- a rainy afternoon between the soup and the vegetables :-).
- You can download, or Freq your copy of UsrQuest at my system, it is called
- USRQ_B*.ARJ.
-
- If you want to freq it, you can use the magic name USERQUEST.
- Please take a look at it *** if you dare! *** :-)
-
- Bye,
