This forum is supplied for demonstration purposes only and is accessible via the IBM OS/2 BBS system. What you see below is the forum as it existed on 10/30/92. The IBM OS/2 Bulletin Board System (BBS) is IBM's new electronic support offering for OS/2 Version 2.0. With OS/2 BBS you can electronically review OS/2 technical information, submit program defects to IBM, and receive information on how to solve problems. Users of the OS/2 BBS not only include OS/2 customers, but the OS/2 expertise of the entire internal IBM community worldwide. OS2BBS makes all this available via a local or toll free number in most major cities. To request a complete OS/2 BBS Information Package detailing the OS/2 BBS offering and including pricing and registration/access information, please call: 1-800-547-1283. ===== OS2MISC CFORUM created at 01:48:51 on 92/04/08 GMT (by HOPKINS at AUSVM8) IBM UNCLASSIFIED ---------------- The information in this forum is considered by IBM to be external and may be shared by everyone who is given access. Based on past experience, it will take about 45 minutes to FTP it all up here and then about another hour to load it onto VNET. If all goes well, internals should see the code dribbling in during the day tomorrow. Those closer to Kingston (VNET-wise) will get it first. Unlike past distributions, this one will be 100% spool, as there are very few local shadows of the OS2CSD disk (Almaden, Bethesda, Hursley and Kingston are the only shadow sites). So, the network load will be somewhat higher than usual (meaning it will take longer to get everywhere, so everyone should be extra patient). (Our management is quite upset at the apparent lack of feedback given to our problems in OS/2, as compared to other IBM products.) We use ETRs to report ALL problems against ALL IBM products, and it is very apparent out here in user-land that this is not being handled the same way across IBM. Note that this behavior appears to be new in OS/2 2.0... our OS/2 1.3 problems were given regular updates and we would receive private fixes as soon as they became available. (We are still supporting a set of 3 Communications Managers DLLs that correct a performance problem in OS/2 1.3... while I'm not happy the fixes haven't been incorporated into a 1.3 CSD, at least I have them.) 3) I want APARs to be updated with what PTF picks up the fix. 4) I want APARs to be updated to include pre-req/co-reqs. 5) I want APARs to be updated to indicate that a private fix is available. 6) The 1-800 number is fine, but I MUCH PREFER using IBMLink to report and track all of my problems. I worked in the "bad old days" when I had to call a 1-800 number for MVS support... and I hate to see OS/2 regressing to that structure for support of corporate clients. (1-800 numbers are fine for individual and small business users... but to be blunt, I just don't have the time or inclination to play telephone tag with people to find out the status of APARs. ALL of that information should be available and CURRENT on IBMLink.) As usual, others are more than welcome to comment. If I'm all wet I will be more than happy to retreat under my mushroom again. I can totally understand the real estate space on the screen, we had 1280x1024 working in PM over a year ago, but all of the graphics stuff didn't work. While you get about 4 VGA size screens inside the real estate, you get almost 15 VGA size screen on a 1728x2200. I would really like to see this type of support in OS/2 for the 1728x2200 mode as you can have a complete A size image, pixel for pixel on the screen (an 8.5"x11.0" image). If I have to go to a lower resolution, 1280x1024 would be my choice, but it looks like both of the 1280x1024 AND the 1024x768 modes would have to be supported. I can't remember, can I get that 1024x768 mode on the IA/A ? And if so, is it the EXACT same mode as the XGA/2 ? I would be using IA/A to develop and test on, but would have to ensure that it ran on XGA/2. This probably wouldn't be a problem, as there will most likely be both adapters at the company where I go, it's just a matter of being able to do it all on one machine. Being able to submit and track problems electronically is likely the biggest improvement in IBM service that I've seen in the 25+ years I've been using it: 1. When I call in a problem, it is VERY RARE for the resulting PMR to capture the problem exactly. This is understandable, since the Level I people are not experts in system internals. They tend to misspell my name, too (grrrr). 2. Unless I call at 4am, status updates are not always a pleasant experience (not that being up at 4am to call IS one, mind you). 3. The PMR gives one a way to conduct a dialog with the people fixing the problem, and to answer questions, etc. It's bad enough that the PMR's aren't always being updated. But the only PMR's I can see are my own. I rely on the APAR to document the status of the problem, and (if it's been solved) what I need to do to fix it. If proper status, pre- and co-reqs, etc., are not maintained, then this is not possible. What's more, if this information is not maintained, then it is difficult or impossible to tell if the problem has already been reported (and, perhaps fixed). I will tell you that I have had more trouble in this regard with OS/2 APAR's than I have had with any other IBM product I've tried to maintain. There are always cases where a reported problem is fixed by an APAR whose descriptive text says something that seems entirely unrelated. But from what I've been hearing (and some limited personal experience), this seems to be much more common with OS/2 APARs. If you are using some other system to track and document problems and fixes, then: 1. Why? 2. Will you make it available for search via IBMLink? I'd rather have to learn yet another system than to not have this information available. Please don't take this too harshly. I am only saying that some of the details can be important... Why is IBM driving up the cost of both them and me supporting OS/2 through people intensive problem handling rather than electronics. When I get a stable OS/2, I will be supporting a large number of systems. If a problem is reported, I would like to track that problem electronically like I do with VM. If a problem has already been fixed I would like to order that fix electronically. In both cases, IBM saves money and time and I save money and time. Where is Dave's big problem? IBM needs to realize that there is not an OS/2 market but OS/2 markets. What I need out of OS/2 is different than you but my service requirements are the same. The person with a single system has entirely different service requirements and maybe Dave's structure is good for them. Getting back to a problem, I have always felt that if a problem has been reported and IBM is addressing that problem, why add 1 to some counter? Leave the fixed people along so that they can fix problem rather than talley the score. It appears on OS/2, the only way to get anything is to add up the score. I don't expect IBM to care about my future, but if they want to sell OS/2 to the same people they sell ES 9000's (and it is still a hard sell for some) the same level of support must be there. Since I know what the various settings should be, a general purpose INI file editor which could Edit user INI's would be a "small" change, but very handy. I hope this gets to the right audiance. Ed Klein ----- OS2MISC CFORUM appended at 23:25:57 on 92/10/21 GMT (by DEV3543 at HONE81) Subject: Dancing Elephant Clock Ref: Append at 18:37:29 on 92/10/20 GMT (by SLAUSON at YKTVMV) I got your dancing elephant clock and was amused. My son is only 18 months old and he likes elephants a lot, mainly because he has a cassette tape of Japanese nursery rhymes with one being "Zo-San" (Zo is an elephant in Japanese). He started laughing when he saw the elephant dancing... That little story with the program reminded me of the story about the story of how the elephant was always afraid of the mouse (this is actually my story). But even due to his fear of the mouse, the elephant worked with the mouse, and together the two of them worked on what was to be the best fondue to date. It is told that this fondue was an idea of a cheese factory called the PARC Cheese factory, but the mouse took most of the credit for this idea anyway. Then one day the mouse figured he could come out with fondue by using the same cheese that was so popular to date, and they called this "Window Cheese". (Any allegorical resemblance to a GUI product from the Pacific Northwest is merely coincidental, to quote an up and coming developer...<g>). The mouse was so proud of this cheese he told everyone it was a fondue. This was a very noble effort at creating a fondue with the cheese that was available at the time. Who would have thought that you could actually create fondue with that type of cheese, everyone thought you needed a much higher quality of cheese. The elephant knew that this fondue was only a smelly piece of cheese the whole time, but from his fear of the mouse, he was afraid to say anything. And so be it, the people actually found out that the fondue was really just a piece of smelly old cheese after the wine had evaporated. They found out the honest way, by eating the fondue. You see, it takes more than a piece of old smelly cheese and some wine to make a fondue, it takes not ONLY ingredients, but it takes a chef to really create good fondue...and the elephant showed everyone this by creating a fondue that not only used good ingredients, but it showed that with a good chef with a recipe, anything is actually possible, and that ONLY with a good chef IS it possible. They called it "Elephant Fondue". The mouse was so furious that the elephant took this cheese both had worked with and turned it into a *genuine* fondue that they went off to create what they called a "New Fondue", I won't go into this now, cause this is a whole other story in itself... But now the people realized that they might not need a "New Fondue", it might be possible to enjoy the "Elephant Cheese" more than they had ever dreamed possible. Still, some of the people that were fondue experts knew that there was some pieces to the recipe that needed to be changed. And at this time, the elephant is changing the recipe to the "Elephant Fondue" as we type... It still isn't clear that the elephant can get most of the people to try this fondue, but more and more people are eating "Elephant Fondue" and will attest that it is truely genuine... And this is the very first time I remember it being done publically. I was just sitting here wondering why I feel so darned strongly about the success of OS/2, and I've come to some interesting conclusions. OS/2 is a great product. It's exactly the "real" operating system I've been longing for ever since the first time I was exposed to DOS. But it's certainly not the first great product that's come out of IBM. But I really think that the "old" IBM (unless you happened to get to SHARE or have some other way to get to know the people involved) always showed this blank, very dignified corporate "face" to the world. They always kept the "dirty little secrets" hidden away behind layer upon layer of "corporate communicators". And it's really hard to get passionate about a dignified, serene, "above it all" corporate behemoth. Remember how shocking it was when we went to the sessions on the 3390 and somebody actually EXPLAINED why there was a delay?? I can recall (and I know you can too) when something like that would have been absolutely unthinkable. But now we're seeing the human side of IBM, and we get to "meet" the people who are involved in getting products out to the world. And we find that they're just people, and that they have the same problems and concerns that we all do. And we also get to see how proud and excited they are about the work they're doing -- and it really rubs off! Of course, one knows intellectually that this was always the case -- but IBM, I think, did just too good a job of hiding it. I find that this openness is the thing I like most about the "new" IBM, and I really think it's a lot of why I care so much. Sure it could be carried to extremes, and I don't want to see that happen either. But I LIKE this part of the "new" IBM very much, indeed. And I like and respect the people I've "met" as part of this process. And it's not just OS/2, either. If somebody had told me even five years ago that I would be excited about IBM documentation, I would have thought they were certifiable! But now I'm doing requirements for the SHARE Technical Communications Project, and loving it. And, again, I think that the fact that the "new" IBM is showing its human face and getting customers involved in the process is a lot of the reason why. To all of the IBM'ers out there, keep it up! For years, dealing with IBM (especially IBM support) was an unavoidable chore. Now, by and large, it's getting to be a pleasure (at least MOST of the time!). Not that everything is perfect (nothing ever is), but it's IMnsHO ever so much better than it's ever been. Anyway, I seem to be in a really good mood today, and I've gone on longer than I likely should have with this. But, darnit, I LIKE this new IBM, and I wish them well. I have every expectation that this will be VERY tasty soup! Bob Beilstein, Manugistics, Inc. I do not want to go back to the old 800 number, I am used to track and understanding my own problems. I have found with VM only about 6 problems in the last 3 years that where unique. By either ordering a PTF, waiting for a put, or tracking the status of an APAR until a PTF was available, was quite enough. The problem with a shop with good technical expertise is that they usually know more than Level 1 and most of the time level 2. My time is money, I do not like to spend it explaining details that have been previously reported. I do not like to spend it verbally tracking down someone who can tell me about the tracking status of an APAR. And I don't like to spend it tracking down someone to order a PTF from that I could electronically order in 30 seconds. What I am trying to tell Dave Whittle is that IBM has developed a very effective system of problem management that reduces both their's and my cost please use it. I understand why the one and two machine shops need something different, but why saddle those of us that are developing large OS/2 farms with that type of system. I hope Dave is listening in on this discussion. You and I are trying to help him and IBM statisfy one important segement of the OS/2 market place. By my estimate their are 25 to 40 OS/2 submarkets. Those submarkets require at least 3 distinct problem resolution and fix deliverly techniques. Two of these are being approached: 1) the BBS critical fix delivery, and 2) the phone in guy that needs an answer and 125-150 bucks a year is not much. The one method being ignored is that need by those of us developing large OS/2 farms. There is more to be said about this, but I still have a few more things to do tonight. Since I have an SVGA monitor (1024 x 768 NI) I also went thru adding the SVGA driver using selective install and my GA diskettes as directed in the Service Pack readme file. At this point my system would no longer boot. After the full screen OS/2 logo it would run chkdsk, clear the screen, and freeze with the cursor in the upper lefthand corner. Ctrl-Alt- Delete was not detected. After a cold boot from diskette I tried to do a "DIR" on the OS/2 2.0 HPFS partition and got the message "Drive was improperly stopped. Run CHKDSK /F", which I did. A second try at "DIR" gives the message "Incorrect internal file identifier." Chkdsk with a /F:3 parameter also was no help. It would come right back and the drive is not accessible. Eventually I found that if when it boots from hardfile if I catch it with Ctrl-Alt- Delete immediately after it finishes running chkdsk and before it goes to never-never land that I could boot from my two floppy set and get to that partition with a "DIR" command. I tried to xcopy my os2 desktop to a fat partition or a floppy but it wouldn't allow it saying they do not support extended attributes. We do seem to have some install problems, and others have been reported Internally and we are investigating. Some are OLD problems that the user just encountered, and some were user error. Some are attributable to errors in making the diskettes even. Some MAY be valid, but we have not been able to determine if this is SP induced yet. At this point, all I can say is if you do use it, hold back the comments until we really ship it out. Of course, real constructive comments are always welcome... Each chapter is introduced by a picture or a quote which has absolutely nothing to do with software, but perfectly sums up the general concept he is trying to get across. It is a beautiful piece of work. The chapter on setting schedules is introduced with a picture of the menu of a fanous 5 star restront in Paris (Maxim's ,I think). A section in french is circled. My current bedtime reading is the Intel 80386 book and "The Design Of OS/2" by Deitel & Kogan, so given a few sleepless nights I should be able to give a better answer to this. It has nothing to do with our lack of desire to provide you with support--it has everything to do with our inability to handle the needs of all customers with the same support systems. OS/2 is just not there yet (if ever) with the same support system you're accustomed to for MVS. You may see it as a giant step backwards, but other customers see an 800 # as a giant step forward. I would re-iterate that your SE is responsible for ensuring your satisfaction--I'm very sorry I'm unable to do so. I'm also very sorry if you were led to believe that the support structure for OS/2 was identical to the support mechanisms in place for MVS. I will, however, forward your append to our support management to ensure that it gets the attention it deserves. Thanks for taking the time to provide me with the information I need to do that. In fact, it's the exact same 800 number in Tampa that all of us "big iron" types have been using for years. We have (because of IBMLink) just recently been able to avoid the 800 number (something, IMnsHO, anyone in his or her right mind has wanted for EVER), and search the RETAIN database ourselves. And, because of ETR, the problem reports that get into RETAIN nowdays at least bear some superficial resemblance to the problem I'm reporting (another reason to dislike and avoid the 800 number call entry process). This, therefore, represents a giant leap backwards into the dark ages of support. I'm really not particularly happy about this... Bob Beilstein, Manugistics, Inc. The Eastern one is Tampa, the Midwest one is Chicago, and the Western one is Boulder. Now to address the question of why the RETAIN system APAR's are different from MVS, VM etc. verse the OS/2 system--- The Developers on MainFrames use RETAIN, as their TOOL to perform their Administrative task. The OS/2 developers use a different tool that is NOT mainframe (RETAIN) source. You also have to understand that until just the last year the support organization was split between two (2) different Divisions, one was NSD (National Support Division) who owned the RETAIN system, the other was the individual Development Divisions. Who may or may not use the RETAIN system. (If you have a product that isn't a mainframe base why would you want it to act like a mainframe?) With the realignment of business units or the regrouping of the various identities of the various product types, some of the "systems" may not be valid for other "companies". I know that this is not a complete answer to your concerns, and please bear with us. THERE is work going on to "fix" some of the problems, This BBS is one way that we are trying to meet the customers needs and concerns. AND no it will not be a quick fix, nor a easy one. You all have talk about how great the Main Frame support is, all I ask is that you think back 15 to 20 year ago and remember what it was then, verses now. And then look at how quickly we are trying to enhance the OS/2 support. Two years ago it was call back and only defect support. We are changing and I thank you for your comments and complaints, its the only way we have to gauge how far we need to go to improve the way we do support. Because our network is world wide and because blockages can occur, the time of you posting is taken from the time of the machine you wrote it on (not PS/2 but the host server). This means that when your posting arrives at the conference machine (commonly called the Master) it gets slotted into the conversation at the time you originally wrote it (all times are in GMT). Now if your local host machine has a problem with its concept of the current time (i.e. some silly sysop set the clock wrong) then you can get the behaviour you saw. About this time last year we had an emergency re-IPL of our local machine and someone forgot that we had passed back into GMT and set the clock for BST (British Summer Time), for about a week (until the next IPL) I took great delight in answering questions before they had been asked <g>. It seems the service pack is there and a lot of people are trying to get to it and there are only a limited number that can sign on at one time and because a large number are trying to download, downloads are cancelling after a few diskettes and so on and so on and so on. IBM has brought the art of turning simple exercises into disasters to an art form. Who the heck, in IBM is responsible for advanced planning? My opinion is that the OS/2 effort is being run by a secret MS undercover agent dedicated to subverting OS/2. My branch tells me they would be happy to make me a copy of the service pack but that it would take a couple of hours of 2 SE's time at a couple of hundred per hour. Or about $800 for the service pack. Now you are acting like MS: screw it up and then charge the user to fix it. OS2BBS support line says try back in a few days and maybe I can get on OS2BBS. Am I supposed to wait till mid-November to order it on diskette (for 24.95 plus tax) and receive it in time for Christmas. Hank Henderson, if you read this, now you know why I (amoung others) have been talking about support level. I can not commit a business plan with this type of nonsense. Let me put Dave Whittle in right here so that when he scans the forums he will see this. Is there anyone out there from IBM that even cares if they keep AIMS as a customer? Here is just a partial list of my difficulties with IBM a the past 6 months: 1) I have been waiting for over a week to get paper work on a 370 memory upgrade. This morning I find out IBM has lost the quote and all the paper work. 2) I have tried to research PNA and X25NET products but IBMLINK will not answer the questions and my branch had to be instructed as to what the product were and where in the sales manual they were. I have given up and gone to outside IBM for help. 3) I received a bad tape on a VM PASO and was told by level one support I was installing it wrong. The first emergency tape replacement arrived after the second one. I have over 15 years with VM. The level one guy couldn't spell VM. 4) On my first call to IBM for OS2 support, I was told OS/2 could not handle the DOS programs I wanted to run and I should install DOS with Windows. I handled the problem myself using IBMLINK and a little common sense. I developed a work arround for testing and was waiting or the service pack for production. 5) On my second call to IBM for OS/2 support, I was told the problem I was having must be in my head because it could not possibly be real. I will admit on my third call, I did get real support and help. I guess IBM is into baseball where .333 is a good average. 6) Forget it, I am tired of typing. I am not in the job of working with IBM to make there systems better. I will work with IBM as long as it is in my companies interest to fix and improve IBM's products. If it cost me one penny with no benefit, I do not talked to a vendor, I find a new vendor. How can I consider 6000's, 6611's, 5822's and other IBM products? Am I sure that with these I would not be caught in another OS/2 situation? Maybe what I am yelling (and yes flaming) on here is a small point, but the last straw broke the camels back. I am just a small account in a small branch not big enough to warrent IBM's attention. It appears to be time to find another vendor that actual cares about my account. For those of you who are having problems trying to download, try to be patient for another 24 hours. The number of downloads requested yesterday as soon as the Service Pak was available obviously flooded the network beyond its capacity. I know that doesn't help, but no company has ever tried to provide this type of immediate access on such a large scale before. On the other hand, the suggestion that AIMS should pay $800 for 2 SEs to download the Service Pak is outrageous. IBM management should investigate the situation at the branch office and make appropriate adjustments in both policy and policy makers. This is not the type of support needed to make OS/2 a success. Note that each download must be done serially. Even though I'm token ring attached at 56KB, each file transfer takes about 3 minutes. 5) Steal hundreds if diskettes from the mailroom. Why ? Because all of my customers want the SP, but none of them ever have diskettes available in advance to swap. 6) Run LOADDSKF to build the actual diskettes. Also run CHKDSK to make sure that the diskettes were built OK. 7) Run COPYDISK multiple times to build the multiple customer copies. It usually takes about 2 minutes per diskette. Now, having become an expert in this, I have been able come up with a few tricks that make the process a bit easier than what's shown above: A) I have multiple host ID's, thereby enabling me to split the work among multiple sessions. This also means that I can download a couple of disk images at a time. B) I'm my own LAN administrator and have my own file server, which gives me the storage space I need to hold the 18+ MB of data. C) I give myself multiple LAN userid's, come in at 7:00AM and sign on to my LAN from as many machines as possible. I then build the images by accessing the server from all of my requesters. D) By this time, it's closer to 8:00AM and other folks start to straggle into the office. In order to keep them away from their workstations so that I can keep copying diskettes, I give them each a dollar and send them down to the cafeteria for a cup of coffee ! Please note that this append is not being posted to elicit sympathy or convince you that I'm the most splendid SE in the world.
