-
- ECAs are distributed automatically to IBM authorized PS/2
- servicers. Other servicers or individuals may purchase a
- complete list of currently available ECAs in publication
- S230-9094 -- Industry Systems & PS/2 ECAs/Service Memorandums.
- Since this is a purchased publication, we cannot post a listing
- in an openly available forum.
-
- I'm not quite sure what you mean by OS/2 V2 affecting an ECA.
- The two you mentioned predate 2.0 so they're certainly not
- specific to OS/2 V2 and they only pertain to certain hardware
- combinations. There is an ECA for the ImageAdapter, but it too
- is related to specific hardware installations and not OS/2.
- If you're experiencing a problem, append another item with a
- detailed description and perhaps we can pinpoint the problem
- a little. Of course, I would also suggest you try your local
- service rep.

-
- Brent:
-
- Thank you, I will chase down the publication.
-
- As to V2.0 and ECAs, early 386 based PS/2s used the B1 step chip. This
- chip has problems running with a 387 and using (I think) its paging
- registers. ECA 011 (for the Mod80) and ECA 071 (Mod70) were originally
- published due to running AIX on these machines. These ECAs were
- updated for OS/2 V2.0 in mid-January. Basically, if one has a 386B1
- PS/2 with a 387 running OS/2 V2.0 the 387 will be disabled by the
- operating system.
-
- I found this out by downloading the 386STEP package from ESDTOOLS
- (also available on OS2TOOLS). The package contains a small program
- to test for the presence of a 386B1 and a brief description of the
- ECAs.
-
- Since then, on the OS2GAMES forum, when complaining about some
- snow when running in OS/2 V2.0 in MCGA mode I have been informed
- that there was another ECA on my Mod70 that replaces the EPROMS.
- This, this I have been told, might clear up the snow.
-
- As I am now starting to run into problems with my Mod70 and OS/2
- V2.0 and since IBM has issued a number of ECAs on the machine and
- since I will be sending the machine in to get the 386B1 replaced
- with a 386D0 ala ECA 071 I thought it would be best to find out
- all the ECAs outstanding and get them fixed all at one (whew! I
- am out of breath!)
-
- Once again, thanks for the information. I will talk to my SE
- about it.

- Tip on AMI BIOS and OS/2:
- Washburn & Co.
- Distributors of AMI Motherboard and BIOS Products
- 3800 Monroe Avenue, Pittsford, NY 14534
- 716-248-3627 FAX 716-381-7549
-
- Considerations in the Use of the AMI BIOS with OS/2:
-
- AMI BIOS's of modern vintage provide a Screen ID Code, visible at the
- lower left of the screen during the initial RAM count, and whi
- ch can be made to return by resetting with Ctrl-Alt-Del:
-
- AMI BIOS and AMI BIOS Plus:
- aaaa-bbbb-mmddyy-Kc
-
- AMI Hi-Flex BIOS:
- ee-ffff-bbbbbb-gggggggg-mmddyy-hhhhhhhh-c
-
- If the screen ID code is in a form other than this the BIOS is either
- extremely old, or was produced by a company with a source code
- license. In the former case contact us for update information, but in
- the latter case only the motherboard manufacturer will be ab
- le to provide further information or updates. Everex 386 BIOS's are in
- this latter category.
-
- General Rules:
-
- 1. If an IDE type hard drive is installed the date ("mmddyy") should
- be 040990 or later for use with ANY operating system, DOS incl
- uded, due to the special timing requirements of IDE drives which were
- accommodated on the date noted.
-
- 2. With any other drive type, such as MFM, RLL, ESDI or SCSI, OS/2 may
- be expected to install and operate correctly if "mmddyy" is
- 092588 or later, provided that the Keyboard Controller Revision Level
- is suitable for the version of OS/2 being used. Note also that
- in the case of SCSI hard drives a driver compatible with the version
- of OS/2 being installed is likely to be required, and a specia
- l installation procedure may apply.
-
- 3. The Keyboard Controller Revision Levels ("c" in the Screen ID Code
- Examples above) expected to produce proper installation and o
- peration of the various OS/2 versions are as follows:
-
- OS/2 1.0 or 1.1: 8, B, D or F
- OS/2 1.2x: D or F
- OS/2 1.3x or 2.0: F
-
- 4. If the Keyboard Controller Revision Level shows as 0 then the
- Keyboard Controller chip is NOT an AMI chip, even if an AMI Licens
- e Sticker was applied to it by the motherboard OEM. This means that
- its performance under OS/2 is unknown - it may or may not work
- correctly. In some cases an AMI chip can successfully replace a
- non-AMI chip, but this is NOT a general rule - often the non-standa
- rd Keyboard Controller was used to combine motherboard functions 7't
- normally part of the Controller, and substituting a standard ch
- ip will cause the board to not function at all. In this case there is
- no solution other than replacement of the board. A Revision
- Level of 9 accompanied by a non- standard ID Code also indicates a
- non-standard controller (and BIOS), and the motherboard manufactu
- rer should be contacted for further information.
-
- BIOS Updates:
-
- If a BIOS prior to the dates noted above requires replacement, note the
- following:
-
- 1. AMI BIOS and BIOS Plus series BIOS (16 character ID Code) for
- CACHED motherboards are customized for individual motherboard desi
- gns, and can ONLY be obtained from the motherboard OEM, with only THREE
- common exceptions:
-
- a) BIOS's with "aaaa" = E307 can often be replaced with a standard
- type.
-
- b) BIOS's for Northgate or Motherboard Factory motherboards EXCEPT the
- Northgate Slimline can be replaced by a standard type.
-
- c) BIOS's with "aaaa" = DAMI, DAMX, or EDAMI are usually for cached
- boards designed and/or built by AMI, and if so can be updated.
-
- 2. The complete Screen ID Code is required to properly address whether
- a BIOS update for other motherboards can be provided, and in
- the case of the Hi-Flex BIOS the complete SECOND and THIRD lines of
- the ID Code are also necessary. If not immediately visible on
- the screen they may be viewed by pressing the <INS> key during
- boot-up.

- Subject: 128MB Rewritable Boot Device
-
- Since the 8595 will allow booting from alternate devices, I think one should
- be able to boot the system from the 128Mb rewitable optical device. This
- probably is not possible without some upgrade to the current system partition
- but would be a great asset to OS/2' usability.
-
- I would envision the capability of having a full-function OS/2 boot diskette
- for problem resolution; plus the ability to install OS/2 from a single
- diskette. CSD's could be distributed on this media also. Even products like
- Extended Services, LAN Server, DDCS/2, etc could be distributed.
-
- One could probably order OS/2, various other related software or libraries
- of documentation, and have a customized disk built in minutes for shipment.
-
- I was wondering if anyone inside IBM had been able to accomplish this (ie
- booting from such a device). Any information would be appreciated.
-
- Thanks! Brooks McNeely

-
- With respect to the external 5.25, we reported this elsewhere, but
- here it is again: the driver $fDD5.sys is a DOS driver; it is required
- with dual boot or MOST if the floppy drive is wanted in DOS. It is
- only used in the DOS config.sys file.
-
- EXT5DD.sys is the OS2 driver for the external 5.25 floppy. It worked
- OS2 1.x and continues to work in 2.0. It is used only in the OS2 config
- file. It does not come with OS2, but I found it on the original disk
- which came with the drive. I use identical external drives on both a
- mod 80 and a mod 70 under OS2 2.0, and both run without difficulty
- with EXT5DD.sys. On the mod 80, I also use DOS5 in MOST, so I use
- $FDD5.sys for the DOS boot.
-
- With respect to the 3510 CDROM, I have been using it on the mod 70
- under OS2 since 1.3, and through all the beta drops of 2.0, and now
- under GA. It came with a software disk. A set of these is for use
- with DOS, and others for OS2. When 2.0 came along, I noticed that
- the installation program automatically loads a generic CDROM driver.
- This is apparent after the message about selecting installation options.
- (The reboot after the 2nd use of the Install disk, I think after #5).
- Clicking on the button to the right of CDROM on the list indicates there
- are 2 choices, the default is the generic driver, the other is the IBM
- CDROM driver. I have consistently chosen the IBM driver since I have the
- the 3510. In every instance, I have had no difficulty using the drive
- with this driver. I am running a CorelDraw CDROM ToolBook Application
- on the drive using OS2-WIN and the sound and software on the drive.
- I'm also using a NEC massive clipart-drawing CDROM program. It also
- runs under Win-OS2, however, I had to get a new software driver from
- NEC so that the software on the disk would function in the Win-OS2
- environment.

-
- The 57SLC is almost a great machine. It has the slots and drive

- two years. The 90, also, is almost a great machine. My main complaints

- The 88% improvement over the SX quoted by IBM is running real-world

- I placed a message in IBM Support on 5/21/92 - still no response, so I will
- provide a brief summary here.
-
- I have a PS/2-70 A21 with a CEI/Cumulus C5640B SCSI adapter and a 100Mb ext.
- drive which is set up to be recognized at BIOS startup (i.e. no device driver
- required).
-
- When I boot the system from diskette, with both DOS 5.0 and OS/2 2.0 Install
- Disks, the external drive is recognized (eg. by FDISK).
-
- When I boot the system from the c: drive using the installed OS/2 2.0 GA, the
- drive is not recognized even though it is included in the extended BIOS. When I
- run FDISKPM, it only recognizes the internal hard drive.
-
- Can you tell me what is different between the OS/2 system installed on my hard
- drive and the OS/2 installation disks that result in this inconsistent result?
-
- CEI have stated that they do not believe that this is their problem and have
- suggested I contact IBM.

- The reason fdisk might see the unit but OS/2 2.0 not, is that

- Subject: HOW TO SUPPORT (maybe) HITACHI CDR-1750S CD-ROM
-
- The following worked for me, and allowed me to access my Hitachi
- CDR-1750S CD-ROM Drive under OS/2 2.0. Please note that there is NO
- GUARANTEE that this will work for you, and if you try it, you're on
- your own -- if you break your system, you get to keep both pieces,
- and I disclaim any responsibility.
-
- That taken care of, here's what I did:
-
- 1. During install, select installation of both the CDROM IFS and the
- IBM CD-ROM Drivers.
-
- 2. MAKE A BACKUP COPY OF \OS2\CDROM.SYS
-
- 3. Use a HEX editor (DEBUG will work in a pinch, I expect) to edit
- CDROM.SYS. Near the beginning of the module, you'll see the
- characters "TOSHIBA" followed by "IBM". Modify the "TOSHIBA" to
- "HITACHI". Save the module.
-
- 4. Installation will have added the following line to CONFIG.SYS:
-
- DEVICE=C:\OS2\CDROM.SYS /Q /I /N:4
-
- The "/I" appears to limit the driver to IBM-only support. It should
- be removed. The "/Q" suppresses installation messages. I left mine
- off so I could see CDROM.SYS start. My command line now looks like:
-
- DEVICE=C:\CDROM.SYS /N:4
-
- 5. Shutdown and reboot OS/2. The CD-ROM should be operational.
-
- This is only liable to work for SCSI-attached CD-ROM drives. I have
- no idea if it will work on other manufacturers' drives, or, indeed,
- if I'll run into problems later on (though BookManager READ/2 appears
- to run very well indeed against the files on the CD-ROM).
-
- NOTE ADDED: I've found that the "Audio Play" functions do NOT work
- using this "hack and slash" driver (which, in fact, I did not really
- expect to work). On the other hand, the CD-ROM seems to work
- flawlessly for normal data use.

-
- THERE APPEARS TO BE MANY CD-ROM PROBLEMS, WELL HERE IS ANOTHER. I
- HAVE USED OS/2 EE FOR SEVERAL YEARS. THE LATEST VERSION 1.3, UNTIL MY
- 2.0 GA ARRIVED. I HAVE A HITACHI CDR-1700S CD-ROM THAT I USE
- PREDOMINATELY FOR 'COMPUTER SELECT' SERVICE AND IBM SOFTCOPY
- BOOKSHELVES UNDER BOOKMANGER/READ. I HAD OS/2 1.3 CONFIGURED IN DUAL
- BOOT MODE BECAUSE 'COMPUTER SELECT' DID NOT HAVE AN OS/2 DRIVER OR
- PROGRAM FOR THE CDR-1700S. 'COMPUTER SELECT' AND BOOKMANAGER/DOS
- WORKED WITH NO PROBLEM UNDER DUAL BOOT FOR DOS VERSIONS 3.3, 4.0,
- 4.01 AND WITH SETVER UNDER VERSION 5.0. THE TROUBLE BEGAN WHEN I
- DECIDED TO MOVE MY PRODUCTION BOX OVER TO OS/2 VERSION 2. I THOUGHT
- THAT I COULD HAVE A VDM SESSION WITH MY DOS DEVICE DRIVER AND NOT TO HAVE DOS
- ON THE MACHINE AT ALL. NOT SO....
-
- 1) THE HITACHI DEVICE DRIVER LOADED JUST FINE, BUT VERSION 2.11 OF THE
- MICROSOFT CDROM EXTENSIONS KEPT GIVING ME INCORRECT DOS VERSION.
- 2) I THEN ADDED MSCDEX.EXE FOR DOS VERSION 3.30 UNDER THE DOS_VERSION
- SETTING OF THE DOS SESSION, AGAIN NO LUCK.
- 3) I THEN SET UP A 3.3 BOOTABLE DISKETTE WITH HITACHI DRIVER, MSCDEX.EXE AND
- ALL OTHER NECESSARY FILES, INCLUDING 'FSFILTER'. WHEN I DO A STANDARD
- BOOT FROM THE DOS 3.3 DISKETTE, WORKS JUST FINE. WHEN I THEN BOOT A DOS
- SESSION FROM THE A DRIVE PROMPT UNDER OS/2, THE HITACHI DRIVER LOADS
- JUST FINE, OR SO IT SAYS. MSCDEX.EXE APPEARS TO LOAD FINE, BUT THEN
- MANY PROBLEMS OCCUR. SYS3176, DIVIDE OVERFLOW, NO FILES LISTED ON
- DIRECTORY OF CD, DRIVE NOT READY, ABORT, RETRY, FAIL, AND MANY OTHER
- PROBLEMS NOT REMEMBERED.
- 4) BOOKMANAGER ALSO GAVE ME VERY FUNNY RESULTS, SOMETIMES IT COULD NOT
- FIND FILES, WHEN IT DID, IT SAID THEY WERE INVALID AND SO ON.
- 5) I EVEN CALLED MICROSOFT, TO MY DISGUST, AND DOWNLOADED THE NEWEST
- VERSION OF MSCDEX.EXE. WORKED JUST FINE WHEN BOOTING FROM DISKETTE
- NATIVELY, BUT UNDER OS/2 STILL THE SAME PROBLEMS.
- 6) WAS TOLD THAT NEW VERSION OF MSCDEX.EXE DOS NOT LOOK FOR DOS VERSION,
- THEREFORE COULD TRY IT UNDER VDM, NOPE, STILL RECEIVED INCORRECT DOS
- VERSION MESSAGE. CHANGING DOS_VERSION UNDER DOS SETTING DID NOT WORK
- AGAIN EITHER.
-
- HELP, I DO NOT LIKE THE IDEA OF HAVING TO GO BACK TO OS/2 1.3 EE EVEN
- THOUGH IT DID WORK EXTREMELY WELL. DUAL BOOT IS A PAIN.

- Mike,
-
- First, the DOS "version" used in a VDM cannot be set. I've been
- told it is a DOS 3.3 emulation. From all of the problems that have
- been reported with DOS drivers, running DOS drivers in a VDM seems
- to be a 50/50 proposition. Some that try to execute protected
- instructions will not work in a VDM. OS/2 will not allow any program
- to execute these unless they are loaded as a "true" driver in
- CONFIG.SYS. You can get some misleading error messages though when
- this happens.
-
- Second, the MS MSCDEX CDROM driver is causing a lot of grief in the
- OS/2 2.0 world. The problems with this Windows driver were reported
- to development soon after 2.0 was available. The APAR's are PJ03358,
- PJ03365, PJ03540, PJ03983. There is a IBM CDROM driver for OS/2 2.0
- that should work fine and has the basic operations expected for disk
- access. The problem is that MSCDEX has some "special" extensions that
- some applications have made use of. MSCDEX will not work with 2.0. The
- IBM CDROM driver for 2.0 does not have the "specials" and when
- development looked into providing an emulation they found out they
- could not without violating MS copyrights. Thus the no win situation.
- Many customers are unhappy with this but there is nothing IBM can do.
- Reports from customers are that MS refuses to assist.
-
- Applications could be changed to use the "basics" provided by the
- IBM driver and then would be compatible with both. But there has
- been a lot of resistance to this approach. Also, if you are only
- a user of one of these applications, there really isn't much you
- can do.
-
- Stay tuned. There is sure to be more on this coming.

- I did some research before answering, but I'm afraid that you are
- not going to like the answer. The "official" position at this time
- is that these devices are not supported under OS/2 2.0 except under
- "virtual" boot DOS and dual boot DOS. Other people have been told
- to contact the manufacturer and encourage them to provide an OS/2
- driver. The word back from a few customers has been that SONY is
- considering it, NEC's position is no OS/2 driver.
-
- I did see some "unofficial" notes about the OEM development group
- trying to get cooperation from these companies and others in order
- to provide more driver support before the end of 1992. But this is
- very "iffy" and will depend on the cooperation of the manufacturers.
-
- If you are dependent upon the MicroSoft MSCDEX driver the situation
- gets even more complicated. Please refer to earlier appends on this
- in this forum. It appears that for the forseeable future MSCDEX will
- be strictly DOS unless MS does something to make it 2.0 compatible.

- No guarantees, but you might try patching a copy of the IBM/TOSHIBA
- CDROM.SYS driver. Change the "TOSHIBA" string inside to the first 7
- characters of your SONY CD-ROM ident string (this should be printed by
- your Future Domain SCSI host at boot time). It will PROBABLY be

- This works just fine on my HITACHI CDR-1750S CD-ROM drive, and has

- For the most part, OS2 2.0 supports video standards (or doesn't support
- them as the case may be) rather than particular video cards. Probably
- you are really asking about SVGA (a fuzzy standard) at some particular
- resolution and, if so, the answer is probably NO, at least from IBM.
- You should contact your board manufacturer for an SVGA driver for your

- higher than VGA resolution because it has a mode hardware compatible

-
- By "IBM's new Multimedia" card, I presume you mean ActionMedia II,
- developed jointly between IBM and Intel ? If so, the card will run fine
- in 486 PS/2s though I have not actually seen a 70-486 so can't be
- completely positive about this box.
-
- The card uses Digital Video Interactive (DVI) technology to capture and
- display real time video/audio and can be used with VGA or XGA systems.
- Various audio algorithms are supported up to CD rates and quality and
- video in either RTV (Real Time Video) or PLV (Professional Level Video -
- an asymmetric compression/decompression algorithm where the video is
- compressed off-line but which gives far higher image quality than RTV)
- can be played from hard disk or CD-ROM. Still image support with JPEG
- compression/decompression is also provided.
-
- Drivers are provided to allow operation under OS/2 1.3. These are not
- yet supported under 2.0 but my experience suggests that code will
- run fine in this environment too. Along with the basic device drivers,
- configuration program and confidence test, there is also an application

-
- Despite programming these cards, I can't admit to being a real expert

- It is nice that the IBM Lab tests clone PC-s for compatibility, but

- Like Sound Board:
- M Audio capture and ... Vendor:IBM Native OS2 support available: NOW
- Drivers provided by:IBM ....
- SounBlaster Pro: Vendor: OS2 Support,MVDM support,drivers from,
-
- Some of the drivers are provided by IBM, some vendors .
-
- Same with the SCSI cards, with the Harddisks, video adapters,...

- While I realize that your format was just for example, the fact that
- you listed the ATI Ultra video card with compatibility 'NO' leads me
- to ask a couple of questions:
- 1. How is 'compatibility' defined? For example, does it mean 'totally
- compatible' which implies that all OS2 functions work right out
- of the box or does it mean 'operates in modes x, y and z' or
- even 'operates just like it does in DOS or WINDOWS'? Gives rise
- to different answers sometimes.
- 2. The ATI Ultra has a hardware mode believed to be fully compatible
- with the 8514/A sold by IBM. Therefore, any supplied OS2 8514/A
- driver should run fine with the ATI Ultra. (Note that this is
- ME speaking, not IBM; in other words, this is done by ATI not by
- IBM). Does this not make the Ultra 'compatible' with OS2?
- Just wanted to make sure that the 'example' was not taken literally.

- It's just the way operating systems choose to work (old DOS legacy).
-
- A: First diskette drive
- B: Second diskette drive (or alias for first)
- C: First partition on first disk
- D: First partition on second disk (or second on single hardfile)
- D: First partition on third disk (or second on first disk of two)

- The algorithm allocates a letter to the first partition of each disk

- I appreciate the reasons for desiring a list of this type. Personally,
- I would find such a list useful. However, even ignoring issues of
- available money and resources, there are a lot of problems in the
- compilation of a list of this type. One of the most difficult relates

- I don't know what IBM's plans are in this area but at least some movement

- Sorry that I can't be more immediately positive on this issue but I
- assume that, over time, additional focus will come to this area both
- from IBM and from OEMs. The biggest problem at the moment is in
- developing OS2 as a big enough market to compel OEMs to provide OS2
- support for their hardware. For the moment, I suggest that applicable

- Geza, I too like your idea, however there is a question I have. You
- may recall in early EEP days I was asking questions about using
- an HP ScanJet Plus with OS2. With each EEP drop, I still couldn't
- get it to work. When GA came along I still couldn't get it to work.
- I spent $$$ on long distance to HP tech support in the US, and what I
- was told 1) that I needed an OS2 driver - they didn't have one and
- had no intention of issuing one; 2) the HP software only works under
- M$ Windows and won't work in OS2WIN. With a few interchanges on this
- IConf with others, I was able to "tweak" some addressing, and now
- this non IBM and non OS2 hardware and software works seamlessly
- from the OS2 WPS desktop!
-
- My question is - if the manufacturer of a hardware component gives

-
- It seems to me that if IBM would assign someone to monitor these

- That's wrong. The way the partitioning works, as I understand it is as
- follows:
-
- A,B: Floppies
- then they go in the order of all primary partitions on the first hard
- drive, all primary partitions on the second hard drive, ... then it goes
- to all logical partitions on the first hard drive, all the logicals on
- the second, etc. So if you had two hard drives, the first one set up
- with a primary and a logical partition, it looks like this:
-
- C: primary
- D: logical
-
- Then, if you add a second hard drive with only a primary partition,
- it'll become this:
-
- C: primary 1
- D: primary 2
- E: logical 1
-
- However, if you add the second hard drive with only one logical partition
- on it, it'll become this:
-
- C: primary 1
- D: logical 1
- E: logical 2
-
- At least this specific setup is the one on my machine here.

- You're in luck. There is a company, Sigma Data, that sells a CPU
- 486-33Mhz plug-in that will double to quadruple (depending on how
- you look at it) your processing power. This requires no slot as
- you replace your 386 chip with it. Irv Spalten from IBM Boca has
- been gushing quite eloquently regarding it as he has one and has
- been installing them all over the place. It also runs OS/2 very

-
- P.S. If you wondering why this is cheaper and slower than AOX this
- option only replaces the CPU and not the memory subsystem as
- does AOX. Thus, bus and memory accesses are at the original
- machine speed.
-
- P.P.S. It comes with an empty Overdrive socket so that you can give
- yourself another speed boost by plugging in a 66DX2 when they
- become available (get a heat sink!)
-
- P.P.P.S One "perculiarity" that Irv noticed is that when you install
- it you should re-run your reference disk to tell the machine that
- you now have a math co-processor -- remember it's built into the
- 486! The install docs were not too clear on this.

- Had you tried using your CD-ROM drivers in a DOS VDM (or WINOS2)?
- Or under a booted DOS session? It may not be as convenient as native
- OS/2 access, but it is usually easier than booting to DOS.
-
- It is a matter of priority (and limited resources). Should we

- drivers you don't need? DOS doesn't come with any CD-ROM drivers.

-
- There was a problem with the Interleave on the early 160's that made them
- appear SLOW. A later reference diskette fixed that.
-
- Let me add a few words about system upgrades (for what it is worth). I am
- no expert, but I have had plenty of experience. First, I have the PC Mag's
- Benchmark 6.0 for a reference point. Secondly, I have two system side by
- side for comparison.
-
- The two system I upgraded was a 50Z that initially had a 20 MHZ 386SX put
- into it and then upgraded to a 25 and 33 MHZ. The other was the 20 MHZ
- Mod 70 that was upgraded to a 486 33 MHZ.
-
- System performance is a CHAIN! Eventually, you will only be limited by
- the weakest link in that chain. No matter HOW FAST you make other
- components, you will be restricted by that link. It could be the bus
- speed, disk access speed, processor speed, display speed, memory speed,
- or your typing speed.
-
- My Benchmark testing showed that in ALL cases, ONLY processor operations
- were speed up, which I had expected. Visual indications were another
- story altogether. On the 50Z, the switch from 20 to 25, compared to the
- Mod 70 running at 20 MHZ was clear. The 50Z was slower that the Mod 70
- when BOTH we running 20 MHZ (both have the same display and disk), and
- this was clearly due to the 16 versus 32 bit memory path. When running
- DOS, both ran about the same, but when Expanded memory or OS/2 was run,
- the 50Z was slightly slower. Moving the 50Z to 25 MHZ under DOS it was
- again CLEARLY faster that the 70, but using more memory made it only
- marginally faster...
-
- Upping the system to 33 MHZ did make is faster, but I have no overall way
- of measuring it, but I do NOT think it is 1/3 faster overall, but the
- processor speed did indeed get 1/3 faster in the tests.
-
- Upgrading the 70 to a 486/33 was blinding and quite clear that I had a
- significant improvement in speed, but as shown by the BENCHMARK, I was
- in no way improving my disk access.
-
- As an aside, I was given a DOS on upgrade for my 50Z's disk to an 11 MS
- drive, from the 28 MS one. I noticed another leap forward in DOS speed,
- and this was again proven by BENCKMARK.
-
- My BIGGEST deterrent now is the VGA display and my disk speed.
-
- In somecases the upgrades will be just what the doctor ordered, in others
- it might not be as apparent. Caveat Emptor.

- I wish I had a real answer for you. This is PERSONAL CHOICE, and you
- better look at your pocketbook too. Are there other parts to 'replace' in
- the equation? With what? How much? What is the old machines resale value?
- What is you time worth to backup and restore?
-
- Bottom line, with an upgrade, in 10 minutes you are running faster...
- Open the case, remove processor, pop in the credit card sized upgrade,
- run reference diskette, and boot the system.
-
- What are you doing? Do you NEED something faster than a 486/33 MHZ? How
- do you know what you need?
-
- Best way is to try one, test drives do have a use here.
-
- Going up to a 486/33 will cost you $1K or so (quantities may reduce that
- price, check with Sigma for specifics). My 50Z is worth less than $1K
- with a 286 in it and a 121 MB drive including the VGA display. In MY case
- for $400 I got a 386SX/33 OS/2 2.0 capable machine. I would have had to

- SB card too. I was COST effective for me as that is all I needed.

- The bus is NOT the problem, it is the other components.
-
- A 80-071 is running the original 8bit VGA, upgrading to the current XGA

- Art, I did compare via PC Magazine PC BENCHMARK 6.0 the 486/33 on a
- MOD 70 to a 486/33 9X system, not physically. All I can say is that the

- looking to run programs faster on a 70, you want the upgrade. If you are
- looking for Mod 9X's speed, depending on your usage, you may be greatly
- disappointed. I may still have the data around somewhere. Depends on how
- much you are willing to spend to upgrade to. I'm happy, but I think if
- price was not an issue, I would opt for an XGA equiped 95. Upgrades do
- usually get you a GOOD performance boost for a few dollars versus a

- In addition, the rumoured 32-bit OS/2 V2 graphics engine should provide
- a much greater improvement for a 32-bit XGA card than a 16-bit 8514/A.
- I don't challenge your views, but there are other factors to consider.

- I'd give the XGA another try with the 32-bit GRE and XGA drivers.
- The XGA should be much faster than the 8514/A, so the performance
- loss sounds like a software driver issue.
-
- Re Model 90 vs. Sigma Data upgrade - I'd be very surprised if the
- model 90 wasn't much faster. Even without second-level cache,
- Model 90/95 access to memory should be much faster (not accessed
- at microchannel bus speeds).

- If display performance is critical we do have a solution.
-
- The IBM Image Adapter/a is vastly superior, performance wise, to
- both 8514/a and XGA. The 3MB version supports displays up to

- Jim,
- I know what you mean about computers being tough to set up. It took me
- a while to get my (originally) non-SCSI machine working with CD-ROM.
-
- Heck with making computers as easy to use as stereo systems -- I spent an
- entire weekend trying to set up our Dolby Pro Logic setup with the TV,
- VCR, and cable system. Ugh. Can't we make computers *easier* than that?
-
- Maybe part of the problem is that I always want something that is kind of
- advanced, that everyone else hasn't tried. Anyway, back to the subject.
-
- I agree with you that BookManager is most fun a windowed environment. If
- your shop is using it (like ours is), I'd use it in OS/2 V2. Lots of
- folks in this & OS2INST CFORUM have installed many kinds of CD-ROMs with
- OS/2 V2, and are using BookManager READ/2 just fine.
-
- There *are* other platforms with nice graphical interfaces, but none of
- them have BookManager. That alone encourages me to go with OS/2. I even
- have books from Oxford Press, some Yeats poetry, and photos on READ/2!

- Art,
- I have little experience with PMX or TCP/IP, because they made my PS/2
- run so slow that I stopped using them. Even without any TCP sessions
- established or X-Windows running, it'd be *very* slow. In fact, just
- waiting for the software to load seemed to take half the morning. This
- is on a Model 80, 386DX-20, 160+80MB SCSI.
-
- As for video, there are no "32-bit XGA drivers". What XGA offers is:
- 1) 32-bit Micro Channel bus for faster video data transfer
- 2) Video co-processing, offloading the CPU workload
- 3) New improved microcode for the XGA hardware (new drivers)
-
- The other big improvement (especially for XGA) is the new OS/2 Graphics
- Engine (OS/2 V2 GRE). It improves internal processing and data transfer
- across the Micro Channel bus.
-
- I hope this clarifies my previous append.

- Second, the MS MSCDEX CDROM driver is causing a lot of grief in the

- monitor on an AST Bravo 4/33 (486DX 33Mhz) machine. I am running OS/2
- version 1.30.1.
-
- OS/2 is configured for XGA mode and the OS/2 Desktop looks good (1024 X
- 768), BUT when I open the DOS compatibility box, the screen turns
- completely white and there is no cursor.
-
- I was able to convert the DOS box to normal by issuing a MODE CO80
- command (no echo to screen while in its white mode), but this command
- does not work in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, so every time I reboot, I must
- enter the command manually.
-
- I tried adding MODE CO80 to CONFIG.SYS, but only get an error on that
- line.
-
- What do I need to do to re-adjust the MODE automatically?
-
- Thanks,

- Those modems have buffered chips and use it, so that the processor does

- works within the interrupt maximums, and a Modem that minimizes the

- ing has reveled that communications sessions are in general unreliable if other
- DOS programs are in the background in other sessions, suggesting tht all comm.

- Chris, I think the problem was just a throughput statement. We always had
- provided a boost for COMM programs in the DOS box and it didn't matter
- where they were, FG or BG. There are new DOS Settings to shut off a DOS

- Irv,
-
- I thought about the 9600 bps limit for DOS sessions after I sent the message.
- The model (SatisFAXtion 400) that I'm looking at is 14.4 kbs and that may pose
- the problem for DOS sessions in the background. I think that it is important
- to note that the tone of the Intel information provided by their BBS seemed to
- emphasize the limitations of using their product under OS/2 versus the advan-
- tages. When I spoke with a rep., and inquired whether 14.4 kbs was stable
- under Windows the reply was of course that it was wonderfull. I find this hard
- to believe when characters were droped and connections broken using only 2400
- baud on my system!
-
- Intel does state that they respond to enhancement requests in proportion to the
- number that are received and that they are currently waiting on providing OS/2
- support (directly) for their products. OS/2'ers should call all current and
- prospective vendors to place such requests!

- Using the Practical Modem 14400FXSA V.32bis with IBM OS/2 2.0
- -------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Contrary to what is in the README file of OS/2, this modem can function
- perfectly well with OS/2. This document is intended as a guide to help
- users configuring their systems to use the PM14400FXSA with OS/2. By
- following the tips listed here, you should be able to most DOS, Windows
- and OS/2 communications software working with the modem as an OS/2 task.
-
- The user is assumed to have a working knowledge of OS/2 and the
- PM14400FXSA modem.
-
- This document is split into the following sections:
-
- 1. MODE parameters
- 2. CONFIG.SYS commands
- 3. Using Quick Link II Fax
- 4. DOS settings
- 5. 8250 UARTs
-
- =========================================================================
-
- 1. MODE parameters
- ------------------
-
- The following MODE parameters can be used as guidelines in helping the
- user determine optimal settings for use with the PM14400FXSA. Note that
- only serial ports with a hardware FIFO buffer or DMA capability support
- the ENHANCED parameter, and only serial ports with DMA capability support
- RXDMA and TXDMA.
-
- For DOS programs that can support hardware (RTS/CTS) handshaking:
-
- BAUD=57600
- Some systems do not reliably support 57600 baud DTE speeds. In these
- cases, try a slower speed such as 38400 or 19200. The minimum DTE
- speed to allow v.32bis (14400 bps) connections is 19200 baud.
-
- IDSR=ON,ODSR=ON
- These settings are needed to allow automatic protocol-override mode.
- The PM14400FXSA should be set for &S0, which is the factory default.
-
- NOTE: Sometimes, using these settings, the application may "freeze."
- If this happens, use IDSR=OFF,ODSR=OFF instead. If the application
- drops characters with IDSR=OFF,ODSR=OFF, try using BUFFER=ON instead
- of BUFFER=AUTO as outlined below. In general, BUFFER=AUTO gives
- best results at high serial port speeds.
-
- OCTS=OFF,RTS=OFF
- These settings tell OS/2 not to monitor the CTS line or to control
- the RTS line. Instead, OS/2 will allow the DOS application to
- monitor CTS and control RTS. The PM14400FXSA should be set for &K3,
- which is the factory default. If the application loses data while
- other tasks are running, you can let OS/2 take control of the RTS
- line with RTS=HS.
-
- DTR=OFF
- This setting tells OS/2 not to control the DTR line. Most programs
- use the DTR line to hang up the line and force the modem into command
- mode. Normally the PM14400FXSA should be set for &D2.
-
- BUFFER=AUTO
- This setting tells OS/2 to run in automatic protocol-override mode.
- This provides maximum serial port performance, and is the optimal
- setting for using the PM14400FXSA at high baud rates.
-
- ENHANCED=ON
- This setting tells OS/2 to run in enhanced mode, which will enable
- the FIFO mode or DMA mode of serial ports that allow such operations.
-
- RXDMA=AUTO,TXDMA=AUTO
- This setting tells OS/2 to use DMA to receive or transmit data over
- serial ports that support DMA mode operations. If no DMA channel is
- available, FIFO mode is used instead but the data transfer will still
- occur.
-
- DOS programs that do not know how to use hardware handshaking should use
- similar settings, except OS/2 itself should be allowed to perform the
- hardware handshaking. This is done by setting OCTS=ON,RTS=HS.
-
- Some DOS programs (such as those under WIN-OS/2) work better with
- BUFFER=OFF.
-
- OS/2 programs can usually manipulate these settings without having the
- user set them. However, most OS/2 programs will function best with
- OCTS=ON,DTR=ON,RTS=HS and the other above settings.
-
- =========================================================================
-
- 2. CONFIG.SYS commands
- ----------------------
-
- MODE settings for the system can be set automatically in CONFIG.SYS. To
- do this, place the following line in between the
- DEVICE=C:\OS2\COM.SYS (or COMDMA.SYS)
- and
- DEVICE=C:\OS2\VCOM.SYS
- lines:
-
- RUN=C:\OS2\MODE.EXE COM1:57600,N,8,1,BUFFER=AUTO,ENHANCED=ON (an example)
-
- (Your drive may not necessarily be C:.)
-
- Additionally, communications tasks may gain better performance by setting
- MAXWAIT=1 in CONFIG.SYS. IOPL=YES may also be required for certain
- combinations of MODE parameters.
-
- In some extreme cases, PRIORITY_DISK_IO=NO may be required to avoid
- losing data with DOS communications software.
-
- On certain systems, OS/2 will not recognize all serial ports on the
- system. (This often happens with ISA systems with COM3 and COM4.) To
- have OS/2 support serial ports, the DEVICE=C:\OS2\COM.SYS line needs to
- be modified. The parameters are as follows:
-
- DEVICE=C:\OS2\COM.SYS (n,a,i)

- where n is the COM port, a is the I/O address, and i is the IRQ level.
-
- Multiple ports may be defined this way, such as:
-
- DEVICE=C:\OS2\COM.SYS (3,03E8,5) (4,02E8,10)
-
- would define COM3 at address 3E8 on IRQ5 and COM4 on 2E8 on IRQ10.
-
- ISA systems can have problems in sharing IRQ lines. In general, it's
- best to avoid using two devices at the same time with the same IRQ level
- on ISA systems.
-
- Micro Channel and EISA systems use level sensitive interrupts and can
- normally share IRQ lines reliably.

- 3. Using Quick Link II Fax
- --------------------------
-
- This is the program that ships with the PM14400FXSA.
-
- Quick Link II Fax should work reliably under OS/2 with the above settings
- for DOS programs that support hardware handshaking. QL2FAX should itself
- be set for 57600 baud and RTS/CTS flow control.
-
- Quick Link II Fax may produce SYS3175 or SYS3176 errors when running in
- a DOS session. If this occurs, running QL2FAX in a stand-alone version
- of DOS under OS/2. For information about running other versions of DOS
- under OS/2, look in Appendix E of the OS/2 Installation Guide (page 97).
- (Note that you cannot normally run the OS/2 MODE command in a stand-
- alone version of DOS running under OS/2. Set up the serial port before
- starting the stand-alone version of DOS.)
-
- NiteFax may cause strange behavior if loaded and the system is left at a
- command prompt. The following batch file (NITEFAX2.BAT) should allow
- proper NiteFax operation as a DOS task:
-
- @ECHO OFF
- CLS
- CALL NITEFAX
- ECHO.
- ECHO.
- ECHO All incoming faxes are received and automatically printed.
- ECHO.
- ECHO To turn off NiteFax, press any key.
- PAUSE >Nul
-
- You can now load NiteFax from an icon using NITEFAX2.BAT. By pressing
- any key, the DOS session is closed and NiteFax is terminated.
-
- Users that run QL2FAX from a stand-alone version of DOS may want to make
- the following text file (EXIT_VDM.DBG). When run through DEBUG, it
- creates a file called EXIT_VDM.COM that will end any VDM (Virtual DOS
- Machine), including stand-alone versions of DOS. This is useful since
- the EXIT command will not end DOS sessions running stand-alone versions
- of DOS.
-
- a100
- ; Enter the following: DEBUG <exit_vdm.dbg
- ; This will create the file EXIT_VDM.COM.
- ; This program will terminate a VDM. It will
- ; work in both OS/2 DOS Emulation and VM-Boot.
- mov ah,4D

-
- 4. DOS settings
- ---------------
-
- DOS programs that perform communications may experience a performance
- increase by setting HW_TIMER to ON. Some programs can also benefit from
- setting IDLE_SECONDS to 60 and IDLE_SENSITIVITY to 100.
-
- Setting HW_ROM_TO_RAM to ON may increase performace on some systems, as
- can settinging COM_HOLD to ON.
-
- Remember that in multitasking operating systems such as OS/2, giving more
- CPU time to one task (by boosting the IDLE settings) may decrease
- performance in other tasks.
-
- Running a program as a full screen application can improve performance as
- well.
-
- =========================================================================
-
- 5. 8250 UARTs
- -------------
-
- OS/2 may have poor performance for high-speed serial port communications
- on systems that use an 8250 UART. Performance can be greatly improved by
- using a 16450 or 16550 UART. The 16550AFN can provide a hardware FIFO
- buffer as well.
-
- =========================================================================
-
- Note: This document was researched and created by an IBM employee who works
- with OS/2 on a daily basis. It was created on his own time, using his
- own computer and does not represent anything 'official' from IBM. He
- is kindly sharing his knowledge and insight with others on how to get
- the PM14400FXSA modem and Quick Link II FAX to operate properly under
- OS/2 version 2.0.
-
- When there is additional information developed on this topic it will
- be posted as an additional file or as a revision to this file.

- I called SofNet (PMFAX) and they said the PP 14400FX IS supported, it's just
- not on the list. PP board does NOT have IRQ selection available just the 3,4
- defaults. The FAX portion is currently Class 1, but will be EPROM upgraded for
- no charge to Class 2 when available. This will probably have the biggest
- impact on DOS users - allowing more reliable background receives(?) - OS/2 will

-
- One observation - I'm motivated to upgrade my modem now, to make the Service
- Pack download practical, but those of us who dial in are lucky to have 9600 bps
- and ALL compression must be OFF for PMHPO. Anticipating >30 Mb of data - will

- Does anyone have any experience with the video boards which claim that
- they will accelerate windows? Specifically:
- Are there any that work with OS/2?
- Do they need drivers/patches which are not generally available, etc.
- Do they actually speed up the windows sessions under OS/2?
- Do they speed up the rest of OS/2 or would it just tolerate them?
- ....
- The reason that I am looking at boards is that I have a Realtek board,

- The BIOS was originally copyrighted by Quadtel if anyone has heard of that.

- Irv,
-
- I appreciate your honesty! I guess it's pointless then to post the Service Pack
- here as far as dial-in customers are concerned. FTP is an option that I will
- take advantage of as soon as I can obtain a STABLE system. Right now, like
- many others I'm holding off on all decsions that constitute OS/2-specific
- solutions - both hardware and software until a have something that does not
- crash DAILY. I've tried for the last six months and am now hanging by a thread
-
- As you can see, the availability of the Service Pack is of vital importance to
- anything else I will do relating to OS/2. If all is well after this update,
- then I'm sure that the last six months will soon fade away and I can begin to
- recover all of the lost productivity since GA. If not, then I go back to DOS,
- put OS/2 2.0 on the shelf and wait for the next (free) upgrade! BTW, I have
- set up LS 2.0 over the base code - so this is already somewhat of an investment
- financially.
-
- I noted your resonse in another forum that you doubted that the SP would patch

-
- It's a very strange mixture. It has a full 486 instruction set (and
- comparable performance), but without a maths coprocessor, so I guess
- that makes it "486SX-like" (if you want a maths coprocessor, you use
- a 387SX). Unlike any Intel 486, it has a 16-bit external data path,
- and 24-bit addressing (like the 386SX).
- This makes access to memory a little slower, and also limits memory to
- 16Mb. Internally, it is fully 32-bit, and has a 16K cache (twice the
- size of an Intel 486) which should help to offset any performance
- penalty of the 16-bit external data path. Most versions are
- clock-doublers like the DX2, running 20/40Mhz (in the older PS/2 56/7)
- or 25/50 (in the newest 56/7 SLC2s).
-
- Why buy it? Well, in an IBM machine, if 16Mb is enough for you, you
- can get similar performance to the i486SX 33 PS/2 76 and 77 for a
- lower price (with 16-bit motherboard, the system is cheaper to make).
-
- One more thing, unlike the Intel 486, the SLC2 is a low-power chip with
- built in power management (like the Intel 80386SL) so is great for
- portables. The recent ThinkPad machines, which use a 25Mhz non-clock
- doubled version of the chip, show this up well with their good
- battery life specs.

- I have just a couple quick questions:
-
- (1) Specifically, we are look at purchasing several Toshiba XM3301 drives,
- with the Future Domain MCS600 SCSI controller. Is anyone using this
- configuration successfully?
-
- (1) We called Toshiba and the representative that we talked to said that
- the only SCSI cards they could promise that their drive would work with
- under 2.0 was the the MCS300 and MCS600. However, the mailing that comes
- with the PDK CD-ROM says that you can hook a Toshiba drive directly into
- the IBM SCSI. Is anyone using this configuration successfully? This is

- Accelerator cards use a coprocessor to speed graphic performance.
- The key thing is that they require video drivers to use this capability.
- Those that are described as "windows accelerators" of course will have
- windows drivers available. If OS/2 drivers were available for them,
- you should expect similar performance advantages. Three accelerator
- cards that I am aware of are:
- - those using the S3 chip. Windows drivers are available. OS/2 2.0
- drivers are not (yet at least) available that I am aware of.
- - those using the ATI Mach 8 processor, such as the Graphics Ultra
- and 8514 Ultra. Windows drivers are available. No specific OS/2 2.0
- drivers are available, but since the card is register-compatible
- with the IBM 8514/A adapter, you can use the standard OS/2 8514
- drivers. Seamless 32-bit 8514 driver is not yet available but
- is on the way.
- - Those using the new IBM XGA-2 chipset. This is available in
- microchannel version from IBM and AT bus version from Radius.
- It has a full complement of Windows and OS/2 drivers, including
- 32-bit OS/2 and seamless Windows drivers.
-
- Performance reviews that I have seen generally show the ATI cards to be
- faster than the S3 cards for Windows, though both companies are in the
- process of introducing "next generation" products I believe. IBM has
- performed some performance benchmarks on the XGA-2 that show it to
- have comparable performance to the ATI card for windows. OS/2
- comparison was not made due to lack of a 32-bit driver for this card.
-
- I have an ATI card on my 1987-vintage PS/2 at home and it runs OS/2 2
- fast and flawlessly using the 8514 drivers. If I were making a purchase
- today, I would seriously consider XGA-2 because of the better driver
- availability. It is also competitively priced.

- Gleb,
-
- OS/2 will not allow programs (including DOS programs) to directly
- address devices or physical memory locations. Programs are "mapped"
- into memory and what looks like a physical address (or extended
- memory) to the program is actually mapped by OS/2 to regular memory.
- Thus to your software the device is not responding because the
- address that it thinks the device is at is actually just normal
- memory.
-
- In order to do what you want under OS/2 you will need to create
- an OS/2 device driver for the device (that follows all the rules
- and interfaces for an OS/2 driver) and load it at CONFIG.SYS time.
- Then a separate piece of code is written to run as a program and
- issues read/write (or other) requests to the device which are
- then handed to the device driver by OS/2.
-
- I am no expert at writing drivers for OS/2 and cannot offer
- much more help than this. I do not know which IBM manual or redbook
- describes writing device drivers for OS/2, or if one is even
- available yet for OS/2 Version 2.0. But I can do some digging
- and find out which manual or redbook if you would like me to.

- Todd,
-
- What you are finding is pretty much what I have happening here also. Can't
- test the NT side as I don't have a copy of that one YET. The only
- explanation I have ever seen is: /Q quiet, do not issue status msgs. /I
- ignore manufacturer info, doesn't seem to work. /n: have seen several posts
- as to what this one is, thought at first that it was SCSI id of device, but
- not really sure at this point.

-
- Thanks Stephen.
- Just today I figured out that the general problem with the network
- software/hardware was the use of DMA!!!. Shared memory mode, memory mapping
- and even communication in both directions works fine! I can even erase and
- re-program the EPROM on the ETHERNET "credit card". When I skipped the part
- of the test program responsible for DMA - everything went fine! But I MUST
- use DMA mode under OS/2, because I'm not a customer - I must test these
- cards in all modes.
-
- I found 3 things:
- A) Lots of advice (in FORUMs) suggested disabling DMA on miscellaneous
- networks cards under OS/2.
- (It works, but is it the ONLY solution for DMA problem?)
-
- B) Some information about 'VDMA.SYS' ('\OS2\MDOS\VDMA.SYS'):
- "The virtual DMA device driver VDMA.SYS supports access to DMA ports from
- DOS applications in virtual machines". This is perfect .....!!!!
- The question is: how can I run it? Adding "DEVICE=VDMA.SYS" to CONFIG.SYS
- returns error "Cannot start! ..."-DOS session can't be started.
- The same thing happens when I run a virtual DOS session from A:.
-
- C) DMA problem of software/hardware designed to work under DOS - appears to
- be quite common under OS/2 and sometimes even under DOS when XMS drivers
- are active. README file from the 386MAX XMS package (for DOS) advises the
- user to disable DMA on some network cards.
-
- ========================== Here are my questions: ===========================
- 1) Does anyone know a "software" way to allow the use of DMA on
- network cards under OS/2?
- 2) If VDMA.SYS can help, how could I run it?
- 3) I can program the EPROM on the card under OS/2, but it goes 10-15 times slowe
- than under DOS. What's the possible reason and solution for it?

- Jack/Todd:
- I have found the following on the CDFS.IFS parameters for IFS=:
-
- /P (p) : 1 or 2 debug output port
- /K (k) supplemental volume descriptor in KANJI
- /C (c) : n default 2 number of 64K segements to use for sector cache
- /M (m) : n default 8 Maximum number of file sectors to read at one time.
- /Q (q) do not display signon message.
-
- I can find not reference to the CDROM.SYS parameters.
- Also APAR PJ05568 might describe this problem, you might want to check it.
