I just got done FAXing my order to the distribution center -- so hopefully I'll see the disks soon! One question (for my planning purposes): The announcement said that I would need to reformat. Is this merely to delete all vestiges of the old system, or will I need to reformat other HPFS partitions as well?? Ref: Append at 20:33:03 on 92/09/17 GMT (by XXNOVA24 at TORVMCOP) Well, that was an experience. First I ran out of disk space, then I hit a bad sector on one of my diskettes but I finally got it loaded! Here are some numbers you might consider for your installation: Installing the OS/2 beta with the Graphics Engine and all installation options took 31 meg excluding the swapper. This is with an XGA display and FAT partition. This INCLUDES WINOS2 3.0 support. WINOS2 3.1 is installed separately. I suppose you can choose not to install WINOS2 3.0, but I haven't tried that. WINOS2 3.1 took about 8 meg. You might find it interesting that the beta diskettes allow you to install WINOS2 3.1 on a partition other than your boot partition. This is what I had to do to get it installed.... (I had a 36 meg boot partition, which filled up. Fortunately I didn't have to start all over, just the WINOS2 installation) I have no idea about sharing ES/LS between a GA system and the Beta system. If it's possible to "share" between two GA systems, then you might be able to do it. All I can say is that you should definitely keep your GA production system available. I've heard that ES runs on the beta, but it's better to be safe than sorry. :-( I hope that helps. If you install the beta release into a logical drive you have to reference those directories in your LIBPATH and PATH of the GA product (of course AFTER the pointers to the equivalent beta-product directories). Otherwise you have to copy all EPW* files and the file R0CSDD.SYS to a directory accessible by the beta code, and put this new directory into your PATH and LIBPATH. I also reinstalled the 2.0 GA code, modified the desktop, then install 427 over the top of the GA and let it retained the desktop changes I made. I then installed 427 (what do we call this Release for short ??) over a model 70 that has ES and LS 3.0 on it - using diskettes - and it went well also. They Rem'd out the drivers and stuff, but a few keystrokes later I was into the network and on my terminals. I have the DISPLAY.DLL to do 132 characters, and it doesn't seem like the 427 one will give me 132. The font seem to have return to what they were back in 1.2, this is an improvement (at least to me it is). My ComMgr ICON has a back hole in it. My Model 70 seems to be running much faster (FAT file system) but that may be because I cleaned off so much garbage. I tried to follow the instructions for setting up the session setting for WIN 3.1, but my sessions setting for WIN/OS2 are grayed out. Oh well, enough of this, I think I'll go over to the RS/4000 and play with a real operating system for a hour or two. .. Overall, this release does seem faster, in a day or two when I get my Imaging working again I will know better - this may be slightly premature, but it looks like the OS/2 people did a nice job. Two problems did crop up. (1) The WILD mouse reappered. I checked the date of MOUSE.SYS against the XMSE MOUSE.SYS and applied that one. Same problem. The base OS/2 & GRE beta code is dated mid-August (mostly) and the WinOS2 beta disks are mid-September. There have been some GA selective fixes released since those dates so obviously not all of the lastest fixes are in the beta code. My recommendation would be to try the beta code as-is. Boca probably wants to know how well THIS code works, not some combination of Beta & GA fixes. As you are using 8514, you won't have the benefit of a 32bit seamless driver. <yet>. The 32bit Graphics Engine Beta includes: A fully 32 bit C/SET2 implementation of the OS/2 Graphics Engine and Graphics Programming API. The VGA and XGA device drivers have also been converted to 32 bit. Programming benefits include greater portability and flat model memory addressing. The ability to run windows applications seamlessly on the the OS/2 desktop has been added in XGA configurations. Expanded system limits include: * Up to 16K PS/DC handles * Up to 64K Bitmap handles * Up to 64K Region handles * Up to 64K Font Handles * Polylines with > 64K (data) of points. ie support for very large arrays of points ie very complex drawings. (Theoretically up to 128,000,000 points). * GPI paths of up to 8,000,000 points (was 1400 points) * Almost 6 times the number of MLEs * Shared resource limits approx equal system limits due to support for flat memory model. No longer relies on 8000 LDT entries per process (bitmaps, fonts etc). New entry point GpiPolygon (for high speed drawing of polygons). Compare the font used in an OS/2 window prompt with that of a full screen command prompt. You will notice that while the spacing is the same the fonts are of different weights. If you compare this to the GA version of OS/2 2.0, both window and full screen use the same font type. The change to the Beta version might have been intentional but it is not obvious. I compared the settings of the GA to the Beta and they appear to be the same. I will continue testing the Beta version and shortly post my results Jerry Sitbon (718) 357-4369 ----- OS2GRWIN CFORUM appended at 04:27:11 on 92/09/30 GMT (by IL14503 at OS2CUST) Subject: WIN 3.1 - NO Boot Hardware: Grid 386 @ 20mhz with 8Meg of memory UltraStor ULTRA 12F ESDI Controller with 314Meg ESDI drive OS/2 V2.0 works fine with this setup. I installed the beta 32bit graphics engine and this worked fine also. I ran the WINSTALL program and installed the WIN3.1 disks and now the system will not boot. From listening to the disk, it seems to start loading the operating system but then you can hear the drive seeking back and forth to what seems like opposite ends of the disk. After hearing the disk seek back and forth for 10 attempts, the computer goes silent and the screen is blank. As a long shot, I tried replacing C:\OS2\IBM1S506.ADD with the APAR'ed driver I was using on OS/2 2.0 but the results are the same (disk seeks back and forth for 10 times then quits). Any ideas?? rgds Brad Harrison Smith Meter Inc. 1602 Wagner Ave. Brad Harrison / Smith Meter Inc. ----- OS2GRWIN CFORUM appended at 11:47:33 on 92/09/30 GMT (by IL26761 at HONE83) Subject: I was asked by someone on the NSC BBS to post this. OS/2 2.0(1) and WIN/OS2 32GRE Install went without trouble. Saw changes to the config.sys that did not affect too much. Toshiba CD-Rom came up as a drive E, with no way to access (double click opened and closed window real quick). Looked at the config.sys, saw what drivers and used the old ones from OS/2 2.0, which fixed the problem. Install of WIN/OS2 32GRE went well, except for the SoundBlaster portion of it. Needs a file (supposedly on disk 3, but not on any of the 30 that were sent) called VSBD.386. Without this, no sound through the SB is possible (this includes standard WAV's). Otherwise Install went fine. Upon initial use, DOS was unable to run COMM programs (BBS style). Made major changes in the EXE's (nice feature of different AutoExec's mad this possible). Tried to use COMMO in OS2/DOS, found that it would not D/L without error. Had to shutdown MEMSIZE to get error free D/L's and found that NOTHING can be running in the background (at least not accessed) during a D/L as it will cause the D/L to abort. I have had this problem with ALL the "New" COM drivers, and I plan on trying the "original" (3-30-92) drivers, as they seemed to allow BG D/L's while running other processes. Initial use also seemed faster than the 3-30-92 version, although the windows on the WPS seem to open a bit slower. Good Job on the overall package though. Jack Hiatt Marc Life Atlanta Ga.
