  71. Where is there a comprehensive list of all publications availiable for OS/2
  72. I am particularly confused about what comes with ES, LS, Developers Tool
  73. Kit and what is seperately purchaseable.  I have the base product, but most
  74. of that documentation is designed for online.  I have been told things such
  75. as how REXX interfaces with EHLLAPI is in a manual not online, but am not
  76. sure what manual or if I will get it when the ES packages start to roll in
  77.

  90. It was my understanding that was a listing of applications, what I'm
  91. looking for is a listing of IBM publications. For Release 1.3 there
  92. were User's Guides for Communications Manager and Administrator's
  93. Guides for Data Base Manager and a number of programming guides.(A few examples
  94. )Some of them were distributed with the base package, some were extra add
  95. on purchases.  With the move to online documentation, the items with
  96. the base package have all but been eliminated, but there still seems
  97. to be a need for some of the more technical reference manuals. Maybe
  98. part of my confusion is because so far I only have a full package on
  99. OS/2 Base, and electronic version of ES and LS. But if there are
  100. items to be seperately ordered, I would like to get the order going.

  109. Your local marketing rep should be able to get a listing to you
  110. if retail comes up dry. I'll see about an append with a list of docs

  163. all the information I need.  Now if I can just sort back through 8 months
  164. of announcement letters. When is the paperless office supposed to get here?

  196. The documentation list is great!  However I tried to place an order via
  197.  pub order, and most were not available (ie unknown)!  Is this merely a timing
  198. problem with update of puborder data base, or something else?
  199. All s04g... documentation but 1037, 1038, 1022, 1046, 1045, 1032, 1033, 1034,
  200.  1041, 1042, 1043, 1035, as well as s01g... were not defined.

  210. I've also had problems with the document.  What I would like to see is a
  211. complete list of manuals with the following information:
  212.    Part number - IBM's order number (e.g. G362-0007)
  213.    Available status flag - Y or 5/31 or something
  214.    Brief description - similar to the existing document but without truncation
  215.    Original product document flag - Y or N flag (i.e. would indicate that the
  216.        manual comes with the appropriate product - I don't need 2 copies!)
  217.  
  218. I would like to see a longer version of this document which contains more
  219. information such as the type contained under the publication section in
  220. IBMLink.  I tried to use the search method and retrieved 34 pages worth!!!!!
  221.  
  222. Also, the document should be broken out into the OS/2 2.0, ES, and LS sections
  223. as it is now.
  224.  
  225. If you look in the OS2DOS forum, there is a reference to GG24-3731 manual
  226. - OS/2 V2.0 Volumne 2:DOS and Windows Red Book.  Please include all manuals
  227. under development.

  234. Will OS/2 publications be made available on CD-ROM (in BookManager
  235. format)?

  237. I'm terribly disappointed that the manuals didn't make it to the
  238. "Starter Kit" CD's, but I really hope that you at least put out a
  239. product-specific CD-ROM with the base system, LS and ES programming
  240. manuals on it.
  241.  
  242. It is a bit disconcerting when a set of hardcopy manuals for OS/2
  243. costs significantly more than a computer to run it on!  Besides, I
  244. like softcopy manuals (though I very much prefer it if I can use
  245. BookManager READ/DOS or /2 to read them).

  418. We have been using OS/2 since version 1.1.  We have always been able to receive
  419. documentation, usually in the form of "red books", to assist us in configuring
  420. our LAN.  Additionally, during the EEP, we received drafts of documentation whi
  421. ch seemed to pretty thoroughly describe processes, procedures, etc. (although
  422. a lot of info was left out due to the draft status which is expected.)  We are
  423. in the process of re-designing and planning to upgrade our network to 2.0 and
  424. have found the need for additionaly information such as that which we have alwa
  425. ys found in "red books" and the like.  However, when we called our SE to get a
  426. current copy of IBM Extended Services for OS/2 Network Administration Guide
  427. S04G-1001-00, we were told it would be $76.00.  It is now our understanding
  428. that the majority of pubs listed in another item in this section (those whose
  429. pub number begins with "S" (for sell)) we will now have to pay outrageously for
  430. .  It seems to us that this documentation is necessary to set up and maintain a
  431.  LAN running OS/2, Database Manager, etc.  What happened to the "red books" we
  432. use to get N/C?  Are we missing something?  Is there documentation we should
  433. have received with our upgrade but didn't?  Please don't tell me that you're go
  434. ing to sell me a tool then charge me extra for the documentation and planning
  435. guides to use it.

  464.  Of course, in their defense, they do have a lot of costs to amortize
  465. over a small number of units -- not the mention the production,
  466. materials and storage/shipping costs for paper manuals.

  468. I'm rather annoyed that the OS/2 manuals were not made available for
  469. IBM's "Online Library Starter Kit", but I hope that they at least put
  470. out a product-specific CD-ROM SOON!

  472. CD-ROM's have the advantage of low cost (in any reasonable quantity,
  473. a CD-ROM costs maybe $1.50 a unit, including the jewel case).

  475. Frankly, what I'd really like to see would be OS/2, the DTK and all
  476. of the manuals on a single REASONABLY-PRICED CD-ROM.

  491. you upgraded from EE is the ES Network Administrator's Kit...the intent
  492. was clearly NOT to charge our loyal customers.  New license? You need to
  493. purchase this package for a fee.

  785. I found "The Design of OS/2" an interesting read. However, I feel it
  786. would have been better named "The Evolution of OS/2".

  788. Under that title, the book would fulfill its promise. Instead I was
  789. put off by the Shared Time mechanisms the authors used to explain the
  790. Design of OS/2 1.3 and 2.0. I was not at all interested - but if you
  791. are a current 1.3 fan or want to know the "guts" of what has changed
  792. -- this book is for you.

  794. The book takes you through the "major" considerations: Dos support,
  795. Windows, 16bit OS/2 to the present 2.0GA.

  797. I found the discussion of memory tiling, etc. within OS/2 worth a
  798. second (and a third!) read. Some of this material has appeared in the
  799. GA technical library - but THE RED BOOK is concise and compiled (Red
  800. it is - stands out on the shelf!).

  864. "Red Books" are the colloquial name for System Center technical bulletins,
  865. which have been around (in the IBM mainframe world) for a long time.
  866.  
  867. There are these places in IBM called "System Centers" that contain staffs
  868. of very knowledgeable people who apparently spend all of their time
  869. dinking around with our systems and software, learning how they *REALLY*
  870. work (in contrast to what the official publications claim).  They
  871. periodially issue "bulletins" on various topics that capture the
  872. knowledge and practical experience that these people have acquired.
  873. These technical bulletins have distinctive red covers; hence, the name
  874. "Red Books".
  875.  
  876. These Red Books are usually invaluable.  Also, they typically have a
  877. limited "run", so get 'em while they're hot (and still available).

  935. As a customer, I think I should mention to other customers that IBM gives
  936. a great bargain on publications to those who have a customer number. For
  937. those who don't know, your SE keeps up an "SLSS" which is a list of
  938. publications which are sent to you automatically. At first this is usually
  939. just a list of those manuals which went with products that you ordered.
  940. But he can add anything that you like if you know the "order number".
  941. This includes dictionaries, magazines and the "red" and other color books
  942. mentioned. One of the first things that I do when I go to a new site is
  943. to ask for the latest SLSS list for that customer number.
  944. As a starter, you should get the manuals which explains all of this:

  1216. tests by IBM.  Support is not exclusive to just this list however. OS/2 2.0 is

  1288. Please put that on your list. Remember soft copy is not a luxury to a large
  1289. number of us, but a necessity. Tracking through the maze of manuals on ES is
  1290. enough to drive one crazy. They could be structured better. IBM still
  1291. produces some of the most unusable hard copy manuals in computer land.
  1292. Placing the manuals in to soft copy form at least reduces the cross
  1293. reference problem.
  1294.  
  1295. Poorly structured IBM manuals have always been part of the given like the
  1296. sun setting at night. Soft copy at least has given us a light to try to
  1297. grasp.

  1384. I wasn't aware of that.  I thought they were the same but I guess not.
  1385. In the Getting Started booklet of the Online Library Starter Kit it says
  1386. "With the IBM Library Readers, you can read and search only the IBM books
  1387. in the IBM Online Library......  The IBM Library Reader cannot read any
  1388. books that you may have built with the IBM BookManager BUILD/MVS or
  1389. BUILD/VM licensed programs."  Basically, the only way to get it to work
  1390. with Library Read is to get the file(s) on one of the CD's (at least that's
  1391. the best info that I've found so far).  That's a bit outside my control so
  1392. I guess you have to stick to using READ or use the INF version.  Learn
  1393. something new everyday......

  1427. BookManager READ and Library Reader are essentially the same (the LR
  1428. books are "marked" in some manner, and LR will refuse to open any book
  1429. that is not properly "marked"; other than than, LR and BookManager READ
  1430. are the same).  BookManager READ is available on all of our platforms (I
  1431. believe) except for AIX and ACP/TPF, so this is about as "strategic" as
  1432. they come.  (BookManager BUILD is available for VM and MVS, and an OS/2
  1433. version has been announced.)

  1435. There has already been too much discussion about how and why VIEW managed
  1436. to crawl out the door, and whether VIEW's daddy can beat up READ's daddy.
  1437. Personally, I'd rather argue the merits of editors...

  1508. want to have to buy and support a plethora of different tools
  1509. for the same job; especially not for different offerings from
  1510. the same vendor.

  1512. Since IBM bundles VIEW with every copy of OS/2 it is my hope
  1513. that all the soft-copy manuals that come out will be available
  1514. in .INF format so we can use that tool.  We do not own Book-mgr,
  1515. nor have I read anything to indicate there is more than a
  1516. farthings worth of difference between the products.  If I am
  1517. off-base, someone please enlighten me, but even with single-copy
  1518. pricing in the $600-$1,000 range it is hard for Book-manager to
  1519. compare with VIEW.  (We get the .INF build function bundled with
  1520. the developers toolkit.)

  1528. You need the BookManager READ/2 license only for books you create
  1529. yourself.  IBM's online docs come with the "IBM Library Reader/2"
  1530. which will (in theory) read any IBM-produced book.  This program may
  1531. be freely copied throughout your enterprise (even taken home for use
  1532. on home machines) without violating the license terms.
  1533.  
  1534. Moreover, the docs also come with a DOS reader as well, so you don't
  1535. even have to use an OS/2-capable machine to view the docs.
  1536.  
  1537. Furthermore, the OS/2 docs (if supplied in .BOO format) are readable
  1538. on a VM, MVS, AS/400 or RS/6000 system also (though the reader
  1539. software is not free). Conversely, you can use READ/2 or READ/DOS to
  1540. read online docs from any or all of these platforms.

  1542. Actually, there is even a way for you to be able to read your own
  1543. docs using the free readers -- and that is to have IBM publish it for
  1544. you (I have this from an IBM'er who works in that department in
  1545. Boulder).  I'm told terms are VERY competitive.

  1547. Since the DOS and OS/2 readers are free, and come right along with
  1548. the docs, the fact that VIEW comes with OS/2 as a help processor is
  1549. somewhat less interesting, I think.
