The only way I've found to move back to the top of a forum is ONE MESSAGE AT A TIME (painful!!). F6(Summarize) only goes forward from the current How can I get back to find a valuable message I've seen in something like OS2PROG DIGEST? Is there a way I can browse all the appends etc? IBMLink says it only supports function keys, not command line, when I type 'br' beside the forum name. It is a CUA host application and allows you to jump around the fora, reply/modify/create/... appends and lots of other functions. It also solves the "summary" problem you reported. IBMLink will be sending out info to all the subscribers soon. We are writing the code as fast as we can. Also, the Yorktown Heights Research lab has written an OS/2 based front-end which (being OS/2 based) has substantial usability enhancements even over my new host code. We plan to make this available also, but it will be sometime later this quarter. It allows you to download the fora, browse, and append. It requires OS/2 CM signed on to IBMLink for the download and append. Again, we are not sure when this will be available for Canada. OK. The next one : Is it possible (of course it is , but for outsiders) to have an OS/2 version of PROFS? I mean can I use it against the IBMLink a local PROFS even when on our 3090 does not have it? You should talk to your SE. IBM does provides an OS/2 version of "PROFS", it is called OV/2. OV/2 provides a "direct connect" feature which allows an OS/2 workstation to have a graphical front-end to OV/VM. I don't know what the connect mechanism is (it may require OS/2 CM). You may also get an answer in OS2APPS CFORUM. OS2CAN is for questions about the OS/2 "BBS" offering in Canada on IBMLink. I am confused by the difference between the new CFORUMS and the DIGESTs (OS2V2, OS2QANDA, and OS2CLONE). The DIGESTS seems to contain many more appends even after the CFORUMS came. What really are the CFORUMS and what really are the DIGESTs? Does "shadow" mean a copy of US Bulletin boards? Should "From Ref" and "To Ref" PF keys work? Mine don't seem to. I asked my SE but she doesn't know much about the IBMLINK OS2EEP as she uses an internal one. We are interested in finding someone else using OS/2 V2 GA and IBM TCP/IP V1.2 concurrent with a Windows application. Our experience on a model 90 with 8MB of RAM has been extremely poor performance (sometimes opening a folder takes a minute or more). Should we be using the CFORUMs to discuss our issues (OS2APP?)? Or appending to the DIGESTS? My second question is about support. We have tried the 1-800-237-5511 OS/2 Support line. Our experience with them has not been favourable at all. Our Canadian customer number is not recognized. We phoned to report GP Faults every time we try to start cc:Mail for Windows with a full inbasket. The supportline person asked if we were trying to run it in Enhanced Windows mode?! I assume what they meant was did it require enhanced windows mode. When we said it didn't they were out of information. Other calls were not very informative either. Would we get significantly better support from SystemXtra? The DIGEST files are READ ONLY mirrors from the US bulletin board (PS/2 based) system. The Ref function only works for appendable files (CFORUMs). The IBMLink help line can answer your questions on the IBMLink service. Ask your question about TCP/IP in the OS2APPS CFORUM. The TCP/IP for OS/2 developers do follow the CFORUMs. If you are a registered user of the OS/2 support line (1-800-237-5511) then you should have been given a registration number to use. Your customer number is not used for this. If you are a SystemXtra registered user (this is a different service from the OS/2 support line) then you should have a customer or registration number for that service. Here is what I think works, and I'd appreciate a response indicating if this is correct: 1. While in one of the IConf fora, picked a appen I wanted a copy of; 2. Pressed F10 (actions); 3. Put cursor on FILE (upper left screen), pressed ENTER; 4. Input 9 (print¢transfer) on drop down menu, pressed ENTER; 5. Received msg that print¢transfer would occur after leaving IConf; 6. After exiting IConf (F12, etc.) received msg about print¢transfer; 7. Msg indicated transfer to FTTerm/PC with download CMS FN FT, PC path¢FN.EXT, and instructions to press F11 to transfer; 8. After F11, new screen indicating shift to PC. The LINK manual says use ALT F9 to return, but this just closes the session. (It took a while to figure that out!) ALT F8 returns to the FTTerm menu to prepare for "RECEIVE"; 9. Input RECEIVE (PC) path¢FN.EXT, but now came the major problem. The LINK manual indicates info about FTX$ etc. The download screen on the LINK also has a lot of FTX$ info. FTTerm has a an info screen which indicates PC-path¢FN.EXT HOST-FN FT FM. Connecting to the LINK, and getting back into the IConf was straight forward - ALT F10 to go back to the LINK, F12 to exit the transfer mode, and back to the IConf. Now I know that any appen (or group of appens) will have the FN of the IConf and the FT CFPRINT, but what is the FM on the LINK, or should I continue to us an "*" for FM? Finally, since this works, my original question was - will the other downloads regarding CSD an OS2 tools, etc. be in a new IConf and will we download them the same way? Elliott M. But it is safer and quicker to let the batch file(s) perform the print/file transfer | commands then to re-type them in by hand. The FILEXFER batch file will always receive an updated FTX$FIRS batch file which is executed to download the files you have selected in IBMLink (with the correct filemodes, etc). Second, If you want to continue to type the commands yourself ... use a host file mode of "*". And finally, I have forwarded your question regarding CSD's and OS/2 Tools etc. to the application owner and will try to get back to you shortly. I do not know exactly how we will be handling CSD's on IBMLink but we currently support OS/2 tools through the ESDTOOLS application. I suspect what you are seeing is appends (posts) which have been "inserted". The conference system places appends in each conference in strict time-stamp order of origin, not order of arrival. Let's say I sent an append yesterday, but it got delayed in the network. Then I send another append today, and it goes straight through and gets added to the conference. Some time later, my first one arrives. Because its origin timestamp was earlier, it gets inserted before my more recent append. The tool you are using to view the conference knows that appends have been inserted, so it goes back and finds them for you. There is a way (Function key or command) to read these inserted appends and get back to where you were. I'm afraid I don't know exactly which command it is for you, but for the tool I use it is called the "RESUME" function. The situation did not happen on all of the fora - only on some of them. My usual use pattern is to browse each one that I want to read individually, going back to the menu at the end of a browse, and choosing the next one based on the last date. I usually read a forum until the blue message comes up indicating that this is the last append, press F12, etc. Last week, when I opened on fora, I noticed that I was at append 173 (approx) out of 243! Now that was not possible, since as I said I usually go to the end. So I read a few, and that's when I discovered I was re-reading old messages. I quit that one, and went to the next, which seemed normal since there were 2 new appends. After a few more, I found another that seemed once again to have put me in the "middle". There didn't seem to be a pattern from my end. Some were normal, it that they were where they should be, and a few seemed to have reset themselves. These latter ones appeared to to be the lengthy ones! When Jim's new system came on-line, I found at first that I was taken back to the begining of all fora, but then that situation changed. I also note that I've tried to delete the "disgest" fora, but they keep coming back everytime I log on! Late this week an updated version of the ICONF interface is being instal- led on IBMLink (for GA). The current version, as pointed out, only allows you to print/file transfer the Summary List (ignores selected files and acts upon the displayed list). Jim's original design printed whatever object was on the screen when F9=Print was pressed. The new interface design allows you to print both the selected objects as well as what's on the screen. The Summary List is now presented as an action list. To print selected appends place the print action code beside the selected appends and press Enter. To print the displayed Summary List you should press F9=Print. The new interface will do exactly what you want Elliott... by Summarizing a CFORUM file and positioning the print action code against the newest block of appends ... you will be able to down-load all of the new appends for review at a later time using the IBMLink print/file transfer facility. I suppose this is because I'm using a 2400baud modem (IBM internal) on my mod 70-486. I also suppose I could have pushed the file to the UW mainframe, and downloaded it to my office mod 80 on our internal Sytek network at 9600baud. In any event, this brings up the question: How often is the PS2 Assistant updated, and does one have to download all 1 meg plus each time to get the updates? Since this tool has 5 (or 6) components, would it not be more effective to have each component as a seperate downloadable file to avoid having to download the entire file again for only the updated sections one wants? Incidently, it downloaded fine (FTTerm did its thing), and following the very clear and clean instructions provided with the package by Mark Chapman, I have it running without a hitch. I'd recommend the 9600 baud route to anyone that has it available to them when downloading files of this size. ;-) I believe it is updated regularly (approximately every month) although I'm not *really* sure because I have not been tracking it specifically. Unfortunately, no, we can not break it up into it's component parts ... It comes to us from the United States and I believe they have bundled it together so that the component parts do not get "out of sync" with each other. I'll pass on the suggestion though and who knows maybe next time it will come unbundled ? Letter action codes are no-longer supported. The CUA Folks suggested we use numbers as action codes. The benefits are mainly for NLS support and for consistency across panels/applications. (IE. if we use "S" for SUMMARY in panel A, what should we call SEND, SORT, SEARCH, SAVE, etc. in panels B, C, etc.). Now it will be a different number for each unique function and it will be the same number in both English and French. I tried again with PMFTERM. I have an auto logon sequence that works fine in FTTERM, but doesn't seem to work in PMFTERM. For some reason, it seems to hang after it puts in the "19". So I tried to do a manual log on, and the "enter" key doesn't seem to do anything. I forgot to try the "enter" on the 10 key pad - maybe that's what it's looking for. So now I'm still using FTTERM. I also note from the doc with PMFTERM that you can use ¢w (wait), but there is no "pause" as in FTTERM. Elliott M. When you summarize, and pick items for print, you get a print of the summary list. In order to get individual items printed, you have to be in browse. Your "profile" consists of CFORUM, and DIGEST, file names and associated time stamps of when you last viewed the specified file. The application uses this information to calculate position - where you were in the file ... periodically the files (from the United States) have been reset with new time stamps. This causes the software to think that you are positioned at append number one. Why they (U.S.A.) reset the time stamps periodically I am not sure but there is probably a good reason as it affects everyone the same way. I have sent a note to them to request/determine the reason. This has happened already with some of the CFORA. What happens internally is the pruned bits are kept compressed and can be obtained if required. Don't know if a similar scheme will operate here, but converting the pruned bits from EBCDIC to ASCII and compressing with PKZIP so that they could be downloaded,, unzipped, and forabrowse'd sounds like a good idea to me. Alternative would be to extract useful info from pruned appends and summarise in some other form such as OS2TNT. This is how I have my configured. I have an internal CDROM drive and an external CDROM drive and an M-AUDIO card (on loan). I have stereo output from the external CDROM drive going into a Y connector and into the M-Audio input. From the M-Audio output I have a Y connector and a pair of cables going to a stereo amplifier and speakers. I can "click" on the DigitalAudio icon (MMPM/2) and play .wav files, and click on the MIDI icon (MMPM2) and play .mid files - both with out any problems. I've played the sample files from MMPM/2 and some on M$ BookShelf CDROM, but I can't execute the BookShelf CDROM and get the program to play anything! I don't know how to tell BookShelf that MMPM2 is there. There are other MMPM/2 icons - volume control, media setup, media install, etc. MMPM/2 works, and after install, it adds to the config.sys and the help libraries. On a related subject, the OS2BBS, which I call via a LD number, in order to download files announced and discussed in the Fora - According to Irv S, in a Fora response, he says, he believes we we have access on the OS2CAN BBS to all of the software he puts on the Atlanta BBS and CompuServe. Is his belief accurate? My experience says no. For example, I've signed on twice looking for the SoundBlaster drivers for MMPM/2. I don't think it is fair to have to pay LD charges believing that something is there, when it isn't. Is there a time lag between what is available in the US and what is available in Canada? Are some announced things not licenced for use in Canada - I thought we were told early in use of the Fora, that there would be no differences between countries. Is there a way to inform us on the LINK when new files are added to the OS2BBS, since we are unlike the US facility which has both the Fora and the BBS on the same conferencing facility? Elliott M. In the meantime I now have a copy of the beta CDROM - and it is wonderful. Hats off to the team who put this together. I'm on the link with PMFTERM, and using the beta code for "regular" work. On another fora he indicates that the 800 number told him they do not ship to Canada. I've got the CDROM copy. I finally figured out what my problem is with PMFTERM. The "enter key" on the enhanced IBM Keyboard doesn't function as "enter". So I haven't been able to get signed on. This is explained in a relase note from the author. It's strange, since the LINK computer recognizes the main "enter" key after putting in a "19", but only responds to the key pad "enter" key after the password. Elliott M.
