- This forum is supplied for demonstration purposes only and is
- accessible via the IBM OS/2 BBS system. What you see below is the
- forum as it existed on 10/30/92. The IBM OS/2 Bulletin Board System
- (BBS) is IBM's new electronic support offering for OS/2 Version 2.0.
- With OS/2 BBS you can electronically review OS/2 technical
- information, submit program defects to IBM, and receive information
- on how to solve problems. Users of the OS/2 BBS not only include
- OS/2 customers, but the OS/2 expertise of the entire internal IBM
- community worldwide. OS2BBS makes all this available via a local
- or toll free number in most major cities.

- I am reasonably certain that the "New news" message did not appear. This
- was during the time your were having systems problems and new appends were
- not appearing.
-
- I liked the suggestion of only getting "real" new items when selecting
- "new items." The other suggestion of flagging those fora with new items
- is also good.
-
- Now that I am learing to navigate through this interface I find that I can
- do most everything I need to do. It just isn't as easy as I would like.
-
- The ability to navigate levels by changing the level number is useful. However,
- it requires the user to understand what the level numbers are. Also there
- doesn't seem to be a quick way to get the cursor to this field from the
- keyboard.

- SinceF10 takes you to the action bar it wouldn't seem to make any
- difference if the Action Bar were on the second line and level was a the
- home position. This might upset CUA purists who think that the action bar is su
- pposed to be on the first line.
-
- By the way, the order of the items on the action bar doesn't really make that
- much difference since you can type an e and enter to get email.
-
- If you haven't done a lot of experimenting with the interface on this BBS I
- would encourage you to try. It really is amazing the tings you can do that
- the help system doesn't tell you about.

- * NEW alerts (anything new - software, posts, etc)
- * Read and Respond (typically respond to post while reading a thread)

-
- I just noticed that Irv Spalten put some more OS/2 fixes up on CIS. Are
- their plans to put those fixes on the OS2BBS? He also mentioned some new

- I usually go to the last msg and read through in reverse order using F9.
- If I decide to exit while reading a message (or get to the 1st item),
- then two consecutive backtab key strokes will position me on the level
- field where I can type 2 to go to another forum, 1 to go to the opening
- menu, or 0 to exit the OS2BBS altogether.
-
- One note, using 0 to exit sometimes results in confusing messages which,

- Thank You for your answer, Stephen. I appreciate what you are
- striving for and applaud IBM for that dedication. However, I feel
- that once again IBM is in a situation caused not by the product, but
- the communication (ie- marketing). Perhaps it would behoove IBM to
- let the users know what is in store instead of the nebulous appends
- by internal folks talking about how great this product is that the
- general public has no access to. Another suggestion is to extend the
- service period for those people who are getting it free with GA to
- include only the time after the release date. Also, if this is truly
- an IBM official project and not another valient effort by the
- wonderful Team OS/2, isn't there also an official IBM variety project
- plan??? If so, that information should be passed along. As an EEPer
- (and OS/2 Share the Enthusiasm winner), I would like to see 2.0 truly
- achieve its great destiny. However, IBM needs to be able to
- communicate with the customers what its VERY talented development
- team (and unofficial, beyond the call of duty TEAM OS/2 people) have
- been doing. Unlike nanoSoft, IBM has the product, but not the marketing.
-
- Again, thank you for your response; please let the rest of your
- supporters know IBM's plans.

- Dave,
-
- There really isn't much more to tell about PMHPO and FORBROWS.
- They are an "official" development effort but not by the OS/2 2.0
- folks in Boca. They are being done as a joint effort under IBMLink,
- IBM Labs in Watson, and IBM Support in Dallas and Austin. They are not
- at this time considered part of OS/2 2.0 and thus have no affect on any
- "extension of service period". They are products of IBMLink and this
- BBS in particular. Any project plan or variety project plan that may
- exist would be IBM Confidential and could not be posted in the forums.

-
- I'm not sure if this has been mentioned in the numerous comments
- regarding the usability of this BBS. When you look at the summary
- list of any of the Digests they show details about the person who
- moved them over to this BBS. The Subject line which is contained in
- each entry is not shown.
-
- Without this it seems that the Digests are totally useless on the
- OS2BBS. You can't use search since it only looks at the
- subject line shown in the summary. So how would you find a comment
- about an ATI card (for example)? Am I missing something? Is this

- Is it possible to add the functionality contained in PMHPO to Communications

-
- Since I feel like complaining today:
-
- I am finally becoming more practiced in my use of this BBS system.
- My access is via CM using a corporate link with IIN, then through
- IBMLink.
-
- I frequently read OS/2 Tech Q's & A's on IBMLink as well as ANnouncements.
- Can anyone tell me why I page back and forth on IBMLink using F10 and F11,
- and on the OS2BBS I have to use F9 and F10. F11 usually doesn't cause
- me much problems on OS2BBS, but F9 on IBMLink always aggravates me, since
- that usually puts me at some kind of Print function screen.
-
- I can't believe that two such similar functions on two related (perhaps
- only incestuously) offerings use overlapping and different keys.
-
- This is another source or irritation that I hope PMHPO will defuse.

-
- I vigorously second the complaint.
-
- Having on IBMLINK 2 sets of PFK definitions that I can't change and have to
- switch between (IBMLINK proper and PROFS) is bad enough. Adding another for
- the OS2BBS is adding insult to injury.
-
- From a human-factors standpoint, there should only be the ONE SET OF PFK
- DEFINITIONS, and it should be based on the basic IBMLINK set. Granted, the
- three applications (IBMLINK, PROFS and OS2BBS) have partially-disjoint
- function sets. Where the functions overlap, *USE THE SAME KEYS*!
-
- Standards are truly wonderful. That's why we have so many of them.

-
- Your complaints are well noted. Here at IBM, there is a strong push to move
- all application to have a standard set PF key settings. The latest release
- of PROFS under OV/VM has an option to go to the new PF key settings of
- F7 & F8 for forward and back. Currently, the OS2BBS uses F7 & F8. As new
- releases come out, other applications will have this ability.
-
- Again, it has been realized that this is a major usability problem for people
- who use many different applications, and we are moving to standardize this
- situation. Thank you for your input here.

- I have seen a number of multi-screen messages and wondered how these folks

- Tracy,
-
- If we use OS/2 2.0 as an example, it appears that IBM measures success by how
- much of a customer's time can be wasted.
-
- That metric should make the GA - Beta 1 OS/2 2.0 code a howling success. The

- New in this case means folowing some strange algorithm which is seeded with

- When you get to the text entry screen, press F5-Refresh. That will pop

- That's true. You get one shot, and one shot only, to view "New" items.
- If you do a Show New and only look at half of them, the other half
- will not be treated as new the next time. Basically, the system will
- remember the time that you last viewed a forum. Anything before that

- I would like to be able to download a zipped file with all of the messages
- for a conference for some predetermined period of time, such as a weeks worth.
- Even if the contents were a day delayed (zipped overnight) it would be much
- less time consuming than paging through messages on this board, tagging and

-
- Also, is there any easy way to reply to someone's message, or even follow

- Leo,
-
- Welcome to the most confusing and poorly documented user interface on the face
- of the earth. Actually there is more thanone user interface. I access this
- BBS via IBMLINK and if that is your access path then the following information
- may help you.
-
- To reply to a message:
-
- While the message is on the screen type E for Email and you will get the
- 3270 equivalent of a Dialog Box. This window has two choices 1 for append
- a new message and 2 reply to the current message.
-
- For rapid navigation:
-
- In the upper right quadrant of the screen there is a one character field that
- indicates the level of the current panel. You can enter a number in this
- field. For instance 0 will log you off, 1 takes you back to the top level
- menu, 2 takes you back to the Forum selection screen.
-
- Another bit of information:
-
- If your cursor is located in front of a selection item pressing enter will
- select that item. Entering a number will select the item with that number.
- Entering a letter which corresponds with the capitalized letter of an item
- in the action bar at the top of the screen selects that item.
-
- I don't know why the helps for this system don't give this information.
-
- Now that I have this much of the interface figured out it really isn't that
- bad. I just don't have nice thoughts about IBM for forcing me to go through
- the pain of learning this by trial and error!

- It's getting to the point that I don't look here first; I can check other

-
- Please continue making constructive comments as you have. That will continue

- Don't know about the IBMNULL, but if the "spell check" file is the
- dictionary, then it certainly was not posted there officially by
- IBM - the dictionary is not part of OS/2, or any OS/2 fix.
- The dictionary that EPM uses is shipped as part of a number of IBM
- products, but unfortunately OS/2 is not one of them. If the
- dictionary is indeed out there on a BBS, it is not a legal copy.
-
- Otherwise, as far as I am aware, this BBS should get official fixes
- as soon as any other source. There may be other fixes out there that
- have been provided to individual customers to fix a specific problem,

- Check the rest of this Forum and you will find several people have been
- asking/begging/pleading for this ability ever since the BBS went into
- operation.
- Another often-asked-for feature is be the ability to "SENDFILE" an item from
- the file section of this BBS to either an IBMMAIL id or to a userid at our
- local site, bypassing the (SLOW) download to the PC.
- These are things that have been available to IBMLINK users for years.
-
- IBM: Here's another option that you might consider -- create an option or
- command that we could use to send a file through Internet. I realize you
- probably could not allow access FROM Internet (using the GET command), but
- maybe you could give us a command to issue while logged on to this BBS to
- initiate sending a file to another Internet address.
-
- Almost anything would be faster than the download to the PC (which is almost
- always followed by an immediate upload to the local mainframe).

- I'm not 100% sure of what exactly the IBMNULL driver you found is, but there is
- not a new IBMNULL driver. After checking around I found that the drivers
- will be made available for download for those people who purchase PS/2's
- preloaded with OS/2 and do not have that driver on diskette. Apparently these
- drivers found there way to the outside world without going through the normal
- distribution channels. I know that the IBMNULL driver made it's way to
- Compuserv but it was not placed there by Irv Spalten who normally puts the
- official IBM items there and acts as the distribution point to the rest of us.
- Irv informs me that he is pursuing these and should have them available to us
- soon, but the net result is that he is not aware of anything "new" about it.
-
- Regarding the EPM file, no spell check support has been distributed for OS/2.
- Whatever file you got from the other BBS is of questionable origin or legality.
- There is a file (LEXAM.DLL) that is shipped with other products, but we
- cannot make that file available separately. There are also IBM Internal
- versions but we are not allowed to distribute these either. There happens to be
- some new code coming out very soon which is supposed to support spell checking
- and we are already on the distribution list to receive it (refer to the "ETPM
- availability?" discussion in E-EDITOR CFORUM). As soon as it arrives it will
- be made available to you.
-
- The net of this is that we do provide the latest OFFICIALLY RELEASED versions
- of the code, fixes, and so on. As soon as we get it, we make it available
- here. "Unofficial" files are still going to find their way onto the BBS's of
- the world. Irv, myself and others try very hard to keep an eye on this and
- stay "in sync", but it is simply impossible to know about every file that any
- IBMer or customer may have put on some BBS somewhere. If you do find something
- out there that you think should be here, please let us know. We'll certainly
- try to track it down, make it available, AND try to make sure that it goes
- through the normal process the next time so that everyone will benefit from it.

- I'm not quite sure if I understand the exact problem here, but to answer your

- Subject: PMHPO vs. INPCS-HPO
-
- Well, I just tried out PMHPO and have the following comments about it:
-
- 1. It will never replace INPCS-HPO. INPCS-HPO is faster, cleaner and
- I can cut/paste using the DOS Window. It also supports multiple
- connections (sessions) and I have documentation for it.
-
- 2. PM-HPO locked up several times on me for no reason requiring that
- I terminate the session (CLOSE).
-
- 3. PM-HPO has no documentation. Only supports one session. Has no
- prompted automation (userid/password/application) as INPCS-HPO
- does.
-
- In general I do not see the reason for the effort to develop PM-HPO when
- INPCS-HPO is available, documented, supported, and with minimal effort
- can have its' keys re-mapped so that the jump sequences are compatible
- with OS/2. While I really want IBM to be successful and have tried over
- the years to encourage it where I can - I really don't understand this
- reinvention/replication of effort that I see for things that don't really
- need to be done when there are other areas that need to be addressed.
-
- Note that I also tried using PM-HPO at the office and it failed every time
- when I attempted to connect using my RolmPhone 240D and modem pool. Nothing
- worked. BUT INPCS-HPO did and does work with the RolmPhone and pool.
-
- Why not just release INPCS-HPO 1.1.1 to the users of this bbs and get onto
- other issues....?

- Subject: PMHPO ver 1.1
-
- In last weeks FTN on the OS2BBS (#92191) I thought I heard that we would be
- able to download messages to read offline without the arduous process of
- searching through them using F10 and tagging individually all the ones of
- interest. If this is true, please explain how it is done. The readme file
- for PMHPO does not cover this procedure.
-
- I would also like to know how to remap the keyboard so that the PS/2 enter-key
- functions as enter and the right-ctrl key functions as newline. This has
- been straight-forward in the past and we have done it for years (since 3270
- terminals were replaced by the PS/2 and 3270 emulation in the mid-80's).
-
- Lastly, in setup for INPCS-HPO it was able to store the "lnk1" and "userid"
- parameters so that all I needed to remember and type in was my password.
- Those items do not appear in the setup panel for PMHPO and I wondered how
- you save them.

-
- Since I do hardware/software evaluations I am constantly working with
- short-term loaner PC's, and doing frequent format and installs on the
- associated hardfiles. In last weeks FTN on PMHPO the presenter said
- that he could not think of a reason why you would ever want to re-download
- messages that you had previously received. I can. In a future release
- I would hope that you would consider including a mechanism for adjusting
- the download message pointer. (I am hoping that when we do message
- downloads from day to day we will just pick up what's new, and ideally
- it should be in compressed form since my error correcting 9600 bps modem
- will not work with IBMLink and I am forced to use an older 2400 modem.)
-
- Second, in the FTN the presenter mentioned automatically erasing appends
- when you send them up to the BBS. Again, he could not think of a reason
- why you might want to keep them. When I compose a solution to a problem
- that I want to share on the BBS, I also want to share it within our
- organization and with the local OS/2 users group. But I don't want to
- re-key it and I would like to zip it into an archive. I wish IBM would
- consider a rule that whenever a developer says he cannot think of a
- reason anyone would ever want to do or not do something, that they would
- have him implement it as a toggle.

- screen it won't download. It sounds like you're at the right place but I just
- needed to check.
-
- One thing to try is to change the default timeout value of the Receive. If by
- chance you have a bad connection or something, the download might be slowed
- down due to retransmissions and the command times-out. You can change this by
- adding the option TIME(x) where x is the number of seconds to wait. The
- default is 120.
-
- Ex: RECEIVE SHOWTOPC.BAT SHOWTOPC BAT A (ASCII CRLF TIME(240)
-
- If this allows the download to work, you'll need to modify the SHOWTOPC.BAT
- file to add the TIME parameter to each Receive command, or you'll need to
- manually issue the Receive commands yourself. Just type the contents of
- SHOWTOPC to see what the actual Receive commands would be.

- Leo, the presenter was in error when he said that FORBROWS automatically

- The offline forum tool is called FORBROWS. It is a separate program
- from PMHPO. We hope to release it soon, but have held off because
- most users will need PMHPO as a pre-req for OS2BBS host communications,
- but the HLLAPI interface within PMHPO occasionally experiences problems

-
- I had this same problem converting from INPCS to PMHPO. I traced the problem
- to XON/XOFF flow control in my UDS modem. It seems that PMHPO inadvertently
- enabled XON/XOFF flow control via the modem commands stored in HPODIAL.DAT.
-
- I edited HPODIAL.DAT to contain the appropriate modem setup strings for my
- modem and then the mysterious lockups went away. I also tried setting the
- modem speed to 19.2 Kbps, but that didn't work. :)
-
- I would suggest two enhancements to the Setup dialog: Allow speeds higher than
- 9600 bps and allow more than the four predefined and undocumented modem
- definitions stored in HPODIAL.DAT. By undocumented I mean that it took me
- awhile to determine the HPODIAL is where the user defines the "User Defined"

-
- In my 27+ years of doing this job, it has been become apparent, and perhaps

-
- How about formalizing the suggestion as a policy, IBM:

-
- It sure would have saved me months of trouble.

- Wayne,
-
- I whole-heartedly agree. I've been using INPCS-HPO for a long time and would
- like to see PMHPO catch up with it. In particular:
-
- 1) Keyboard remap, color definition, etc.
- 2) Support for multiple sessions.
- 3) Configurable 3270 emulation (mod 3, 4, 5).
- 4) Option to display modem dialog.
- 5) Predefine the values of the various fields on the IN logon screen.
-
- An improvement that could/should be implemented is the ability to define
- more than one USER DEFINED modem-type in the HPODIAL.DAT file. I support
- INPCS-HPO at our company and I would love to be able to maintain a single
- HPODIAL.USR file that contains profiles for the various modems we use. As it
- stands now, I have numerous files (one for each modem-type).

- job of overviewing FORBROWS, the part where he said that we could not

-

- Well, maybe not all. After you complained I did some detailed looking and
- discovered one of your appends (and five from other folks) which have not
- properly posted. Each has a common characteristic ... a set of five (or
- more) dashes beginning in column 1. e.g.:
-
- |
- |-----
- |
- |<---The left edge of a piece of virtual paper.
-
- In several cases folks were reposting appends from one forum to another. In
- these cases the first line of the reposted appends contains the five dashes.
- These five dashes act as a separator in the conferencing software and
- posting these appends intact would have confused certain conference
- operations. It is exactly this sort of behavior that led to the rejection
- of these appends to begin with. In one case (yours), the append simply had
- five dashes in it, presumably used to separate the body of the append from
- a postscript.
-
- I plan to make a modification to the software that doesn't simply reject
- appends with five dashes in column one. Thanks for making noise on this
- one.

-
- Can anyone tell me if there is a way to cause PMHPO to display everything in
- monochrome rather than use colors? I use an IBM 8514/A Adapter with an IB
-
- 8507 19" monochrome screen. The color red does not show up on my screen at all
- and this makes things rather difficult to see. (I assume it is red this time.
- that is what was missing last time I swapped monitors to find the problem).
-
- I figure that I can manually change the colors in the OS2BBS configuration
- from the BBS side, but that does not help with IBMLINK. If there were a
- /mono switch or similar it would be a great help.
-
- I have searched help and gone through all the options but cannot find any
- assistance.
-
- Please pick colors that are visible on the 8514/8507 combination! Thanks.

- Subject: PMHPO Download problems
-
- I seem to have one more problem with PMHPO that is causing download to not
- work correctly.
-
- I double-click the "BBS Download" object and SHOWTOPC.CMD is correctly
- downloaded. The pc then runs SHOWTOPC, and it issues a receive command
- such as...
- RECEIVE HPFS.ZIP A :HPFS ZIPBIN Z1 (
-
- However... The HOST screen contains a partial IND$FILE command, missing
- the file name HPFS.ZIP. All the receive commands end with an error code
- of 3 or something like that (I documented this in a prior message to the
- General Q&A forum but it looks like this is a better place to ask!)
-
- The only way I HAVE been able to download from IBMLINK or OS2BBS has been
- with Extended Services Ascii terminal emulation (VT100). That works fine
- but VERY SLOWLY.
-
- PMFTRM is also slow, and only the download is intermittent, often scrambling
- the IND$FILE command. (Starting in column 60 or so and wrapping back to col.
- 1?)
-
- PMHPO is GREAT speed wise, I really like this 9600 connection, but no
- download ???
-
- Any suggestions????? Thanks

- If I list 'new items' or 'all items', then pick some item to look at, and keep

-
- I will try the 4800 link next time. This time I selected the first 12 items
- in this forum for download, then picked download, "A" session, selected all
- 12 entries, and when prompted, double-clicked the BBS Download ICON.
-
- SHOWTOPC was successfully transmitted - 113 bytes
- Then it tried to receive the $$show$$ file. The IND$FILE command was
- again scrambled... the file type was TX, and I received an INDFT01N
- missing or invalid CMS file ID. (or something like that .. had to write fast)
- and when I tried a 2nd time, OS/2 BBS aborted and I had to re-establish from
- IBMLINK.
-
- Same session, same execution of PM HPO, I went throug the whole procedure
- again. This time the receive command goes code 0, and never tries to
- place anything in the PMHPO window.
-
- I am going to delete PMFTRM and try to make sure that there is nothing on my

- it IS out there...) I have a 70-A21, 16Meg, and am going through a Rolm

- lying around, changed PMHPO to 4800, stopped and restarted it, and then
- dialed back in. (1-800-727-5611 Worcester MA).
-
- Again tried tagging first 11 entries of this forum, download from session
- A, selected all 11, and when prompted double-clicked BBS-Download.
-
- The get for SHOWTOPC worked fine. When SHOWTOPC executed, the get command
- was truncated at the A:$$SHOW$$ TX
- The "T" in TXT was missing as was the (ASCII CRLF. I believe that the receive
- command is correct and that the problem occurs between the receive and the
- ind$file GET. Since it deletes itself I can't be sure.
-
- Received the INDFT01N error message - invalid or missing CMS file type.

- At this point I am at a complete loss. If there are any other suggestions or
- any traces or diagnosics that I can do to help resolve this problem, please
- let me know and I will be more than willing to try some more.

- Subject: Permier(e) OS/2 Bulletin Board System?
-
- I read a comment on this BBs from an IBM'er about wanting this BBS to become
- the premier OS/2 bbs. IBM has a long way to go before that is true. The idea of
- this board, in its present form, developing into the premier OS/2 Bulletin
- board is frighting. If it does, then OS/2 will be a failure.
-
- I say the above not out of anger but out of sadness. Os/2 is currently
- superior to any operating system currently available on the market (yes, i
- have used UNIX), but to stay that way things need to improve. There are
- many problems IBM needs to solve (including OS/2 CSD's) but let us stick
- here to problems with this BBS.
-
- 1) The interface here is slow and involved. It took the worst qualities of
- IBMLINK without giving us some of the work arrounds. Why did IBM try to
- re-invent the concept of a BBS when there have been many tried and true
- interfaces developed over the years. See your cousins over on the NSC-BBS out
- of Atlanta. Their interface is not the best I have seen but it is light years
- ahead of this one. This interface would appeal to only to IBMLINK users who
- have never seen anything else.
-
- 2) You are charging customers fot his board, unless they are a favored customer
- or a technical co-ordinator. Make it easy, quick, and low cost for them to use
- it. I do not mean lowing your charges, I mean lowering the online time it
- takes to use this board.
- A) Create a option that would allow a user to set up in his profile those
- forma (formums to non Latin majors) which he wishes to follow. A sign-on
- time accumlate all new message in these forma into a file and zip it for
- down loading. AUTOMATICALLY.
- B) Provide an offline message reader that would allow users to track a thread.
- I go to sleep sometimes while this board on IBMLINK is changing screens.
- C) Provide an offline message preperation facility with in the offline message
- reader, so that costly connect time is not taken up with typing.
- D) Provide a upline load for the message prepared offline so that they can be
- appended to the proper forma. Upline loads could be restricted to appends
- only.
- E) Speed up the file transfer software. IND$FILE has peeked for me at 152
- characters a second. On NSC BBS I have run XMODEM at 170 characters a
- second and YMODEM at 220 characters a second. This amount to 36 minutes
- difference on the download of a 1Mb file. Remember time is money to our
- friends paying connect charges.
-
- 3) Work out some way of attracting individuals (especially creative ones) to
- to this board. People like Jack Haight on the NSC BBS are non-IBM'ers but
- are doing more than 99 percent of IBM in promoting OS/2. (yes, Jack I have
- seen you here too). Some of this one person connections may develop into
- the Word Perfects and Novells of the future (note the UTAH plug). She sould
- be considered in you efforts. OS/2 belongs with the masses not just with
- the Fortune 1000. Remember the little person, her three main concerns are
- cost, cost, and cost.

- :PANTS DOWN
- ohmygosh, we did it again. Looks like we set all the flags for
- boundary checking on all the systems except the one that barfed.
- Kinda like pouring a gallon into a thimble on this one.
-
- :PANTS UP
- All 'lost appends' should be inserted by now; please let me know if
- any disappeared.
- Anyway, the problem has been identified, corrected, and will be
- corrected with some of our more sophisticated routines to tell us
- when it's choking.
-
- This way, we can shut it down for a couple days to check it out and....
- NO, WAYNE, please, NOT THE BASEBALL BAT....AHHHHHHHHHGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!
- :HOHO OFF
- :COMMITTMENT TO FUTURE ON
- We will NOT EVER 'shut down' the system without notifying everyone in
- advance. Movie theatres would go out of business fast if they cleaned
- the projectors in the middle of the 7:00 show.
-
- Speaking of Premiere: (where'd that come from? <grin>)
- We are now in the process of aligning the service strategies together
- to ensure that the postings here are the right ones, current, and
- include up-to-date fix packages from the OS/2 development groups.
- We, IBM, have always concentrated on the quality of Service Delivery
- for our products with a couple key notes. Service strategies that
- have excelled in the past are not going to work the same way they used
- to. Customers need better access, faster turnaround time from report
- to fix-in-hand, and we are committed to this philosophy.
- The hurdle we're faced with is that the service strategy for High-end
- systems is based on a Preventive Service concept, but the service
- strategy for Personal Systems has been based on a Corrective Service
- platform. No news is good news; call and we'll address any problem you
- give us. Today's technology requires access to virtually all available
- information, and with the superior skill base we see in the market
- place, we now know that the customer has the capability of choosing
- the right fix, the first time, PROVIDED THAT WE CAN GIVE YOU THE INFO
- YOU NEED TO FIND THE FIX!
- I've done a bit of homework on the cost/price/net return on both ends
- of the computer industry, and have found that we can easily fulfill
- a Preventive Service strategy for Personal Systems technology. The
- only drawback is the price we'd pay for this service. A preventive
- maintenance contract with all the trimmings (ratio pretty close)
- would come to around $7400 for OS/2 with a $1960 upgrade fee from
- release to release. Acceptable in today's market? >>>>> N O T ! <<<<<
- So, we've got some work to do for you, and here's some things that
- are coming:
- * comprehensive listings of problems (APARs): opened and closed
- with closing codes for tracking. Updated at 8 business hour intervals.
- ++++ now you can find a match to a known, reported problem right here
- on the OS2BBS. Download when ready, put it on, go back to work.
- * provide a COMPREHENSIVE download library of the items that you
- need to fix the problems you encounter without having to wait for us
- to give it to you. Up to date, complete, right from Development.
- Future additions will include Software/Hardware Vendor solutions.
- ++++ you find it, you download it, you put it on, you go back to work.
- * enhancements to the IBM Support Problem Reports that will change
- the response time from days/hours to minutes/seconds. (full tilt 11/1)
- ++++ if you can't find what you need, we'll get it for you, figure
- out what WE needed to do so you CAN find it in the future, and
- implement the change.
-
- no more mamby-pamby, wishy-washy support.
- We are committed to building for you, the IBM Customer, the best
- system available for electronic Operating System Support so you can
- continue to use our products for your business, home, and recreation.
- You got ideas? Let us know. We'll listen. This is your BBS.
- You need something? Let us know. We'll do our best to get it on time.
- You don't like something? Let us know. We'll change it.
- We stand behind this BBS with a committment that will match or beat any
- one else in the business. period.
- We have to, because you've staked your reputations, businesses, and
- futures on IBM Software.
- . . . and so have we.
- PS. and oh by the way, you haven't seen much of me out here lately
- because I've been hacking on the things I just outlined above.
- I've seen everything from here to InterNET, so keep talking, folks.
- Sound like a lot of wind? yup.
- Can we do it? Let's wait and see what happens. No time frames, just
- watch News and Announcemnts, and please try to keep up. <g>

- The 'premier' word in my append first came from a comment by a Henderson of IBM
- in another formum.
-
- As to lost appends, I entered my first version of the 'premier' series on Sat.
- 92/09/12 at about 10am MDT. It disappeared. About 9PM on 92/09/13, I entered a
- problem. And lo and behold my first "premier' comment was attached to the end
- of the problem. I got a good reaction form the problem people.
-
- I then spent sometime trying to get PMHPO to work. After a number of complete
- failures in getting PMHPO to work, I discover an 800 number in the PMHPO
- folder for my area. I tried it in place of my local IIN number and it worked.
- Also the 800 number does not work with my "old" INPCS program.
-
- One thing for sure, the performance of the PMHPO program is much better than
- any other program I have use with IIN. The speed is much better.
-
- Now I wait to see if FORBROWS will handle the other issues I addressed. I saw
- an append that indicated it would be out in about a month.

- Ken: You know, the prices you quoted for support don't look too
- bad if you look at them from a DSLO standpoint. Consider our
- installation... we support 100+ OS/2 workstations, but we would
- only need the "premium" service on ONE of those machines. We

-
- I was composing some appends last night using PMHPO 1.1 and ran into
- a couple of problems... Hopefully these have already been reported,
- but in case not here goes:
-
- 1) I was composing a multi-page append and when I scrolled back
- to a previous page found that several lines of the text had been
- moved around. It almost looked like the bottom 3rd of the screen
- had been "cut" out and layed on top of the top 3rd. (Frustrating
- to say the least.)
-
- 2) While retyping my append to correct the problem in #1, I hit
- F8, the phone line was termined and PMHPO ended. To say I was
- suprised was quite an understatement. It sure LOOKED like the
- program "ABENDED", but there was no message describing any
- kind of error.

-
- 1) Logon to IBMLink using Seattle number provided with PMHPO at
- 2400 baud using Hayes Smartmodem 2400.
-
- 2) Select option 3 (file transfer).
-
- 3) Select option 1 (listfile.)
-
- 4) Select all files (press ENTER on this screen.)
-
- 5) Go down list and select a binary file to be downloaded by putting
- a "t" before the file I wanted to download.
-
- 6) Select the "download" option from the PMHPO screen and
- filled in the blanks with the source and target filename.
-
- 7) Specify "binary" as the type of file to be downloaded.
-
- 8) Press OK.
-
- I then let the file transfer start and made sure that something
- was displayed in the file transfer window. I then jumped back to
- the desktop and opened an OS/2 command window. Within 10 seconds
- the file transfer will abort.

- Actually, I should clarify. The bug that held up the FORBROWS release
- was not in FORBROWS, but in PMHPO. On some machines, at certain modem
- speeds, the originally released version of PMHPO would sometimes hang
- during the download of fora files (a download that had been invoked by

- Since IBMLink has been so (can't think of a proper adjective) this week,
- I've only just started using PMHPO from home. At work I use CM running

-
- My biggest complaint so far is the inability to remap [Enter] to the

- I have remapped the keys under CM, all my PC software uses the [Enter] key,
- and I haven't used a real 3270 in years. Why isn't this configurable?
-
- Some of the new changes on IBMLink look good, some look "interesting",
- and the jury is out on a lot until I know what is being caused by
- instabilities being experienced in IBMLink.
-
- BUT, I commented a couple of months ago about another pet peeve concerning
- the use of PF10 and PF11 to go forward and backwards through a "browse set"
- on IBMLink, and using PF9 and PF10 for a similar function on OS2BBS (it's
- actually worse, since you usually start at the front and go forward in IBMLink
- and start at the end and go backwards on OS2BBS).
-
- I was even in some application today on IBMLink (I think it was
- PRESSRELEASES or something) where they used PF4 and PF5 for similar function!!!
-
- I had been under the impression that these "anomalies" were being fixed
- in the new IBMLink software.
-
- Can anyone say when these usage "problems" will be fixed (made consistent)?
-
- Failing that, can anyone logically explain why these seemingly similar
- functions are really different and consequently deserve different usages
- under CUA 1984 or whatever?

- late breaking report !
- I had reported PMHPO failure with PMHPO
- under the Winos23.1 beta. Well under the
- beta load (without 3.1) it would fail.
- Later I loaded win3.1 and noticed that a new
- kernal was loaded. I then retried PMHPO and it
- will now start. BUT, the font is in a real
- bad way. Letters are double sized and
- look real weird!. I can only see about
- 20 char on each line. The message might be
- messed up because of this.

-
- Brooks and Mike,
-
- The main causes behind the problem of the usage of PF keys is the design team
- who created the applications. Since all of the applications that you mentioned
- are from different groups in IBM, the PF key usage is different as well. There
- is consistency in each groups applications, but when you get to IBMLINK, which
- can access many different applications, you get conflicting results.
-
- This is not to say that this is correct, but just an explanation of what
- happened. Also, the current CUA definitions of PF keys, do not specify an
- ITEM FORWARD, or FORWARD key. It is up to the development group of the
- application.
-
- Certainly here at IBM there needs to be a consistency across applications, and
- hearing you concern here is helping to coordinate these groups in future
- development. Thanks for you input, and it is well noted.

-
- Thanks for making FORBROWS available. I have downloaded and installed it, but
- am having difficulties getting FORBROWS to communicate with the host to do the
- initial fora conference list download. I have tried two different computers/
- configurations. Both result in the same 'RC=79 from RECEIVE' error message. The
- configurations are: 1. IBM mod 70 with OS/2 1.3 (no CSDs applied), CommMgr 1.3,
- FORBROWS 3.70, 3270 connection to our VTAM network with leased line link to
- IIN; 2. 486 clone with OS/2 2.0 GA, PMHPO v1.1a using 9600 dial-up to IIN. I
- log into IIN as MDCL055 and select IBMLink.
- @
- Normally I access the OS2BBS by keying in OS2BBS on the IBMLink Main Menu.
- Messages about the OS2BBS being initializing would appear and then the OS2BBS
- Main Menu would appear. Exiting OS2BBS requires either F3 or level 0 entry and
- returns me to the IBMLink Main Menu.
- @
- The FORBROWS help says to be on the IBMLink Main Menu. This means to me that I
- am not yet connected/logged into the OS2BBS. Is FORBROWS supposed to connect/
- log me into the OS2BBS? What I get after selecting the Conference popup from
- the FORBROWS window, then selecting Download fora or files from host, getting
- the FORADOWN window, chosing the correct 3270 session (i.e. A for PMHPO, D for
- CommMgr), then pushing List Button, results in error message 'RC=79 from
- RECEIVE; C:\APPL\FORBROWS\APPENDS\POSTED\LASTAPPD.NOW'. Is this the correct
- procedure for getting the initial conference selection list?
- @
- When I manually connect/logon to the OS2BBS and am at the BBS Main Menu,
- selecting the List push button as described above, results in the error message
- 'Unable to connect to proper host screen; possible 3270 or comm error. If
- using IBMLink, ensure that the host session is on the IBMLink Main Menu before
- trying.'. This is followed by error message 'RC=89 from RECEIVE'.
- @
- What important piece of information did I miss in the READ.ME instructions that
- will get the communication connection working? What am I doing wrong?
- @
- Thanks for any help any one can provide.

- Steve: Out of curiosity, are you able to a RECEIVE of a file when you in
- IBMLink? The reason I ask is that you MAY have an incorrect logmode
- specified on the host side. (We had lots of problems like this when we
- first installed programmable workstations.) The specific thing to check
- for is to make sure that the default logmode for the 3270 session you are
- using has the "queryable" bit turned on.
-
- If you don't know this information, then (hopefully) your Network help
- desk should be able to get you in contact with someone who could.
-
- BTW... you DO want to be at the IBMLink Main menu when running FORBROWS.
- (This confused me at first too.) FORBROWS does some "magic" stuff on the
- host side to setup the file transfer... so there is no need for it to
- get into the OS2BBS we all know and love.

- You need to be at the IBMLINK main menu for FORBROWS to work.
- You goto the 'Conference' menu, then goto 'Download fora or
- file form host...'. When Foradown comes up hit the 'LIST'

- download a list of forums. You chose witch forum you want

- OS2EWS is OS2 Employee Written Software. This is software developed by
- IBMers on their own time and equipment that they share with each
