- Click mouse button 2 on an empty spot on the desk top. Click on the
- arrow by "Open" and open the settings notebook. Go to the "Window"
- tab and select "Minimize window to desktop".
-
- Now double click mouse button 1 on the OS/2 System icon on the desktop.
- Open the System Setup folder and then the System folder. Go to the
- "Window" tab in the System notebook and select "Minimize window to
- desktop".
-
- This should do it.

- I can't say for sure but since the 3270 sessions do not have their own

- Subject: Where's the Lan Requester
-
- I received my GA copy of OS/2 2.0 last week, and within an hour I had it
- installed on our test system. I immediately began looking for the network
- icon, only to find that it was nowhere to be found. A quick call to IBM
- support revealed that the Lan Requester diskettes are not included with
- the base code....you must buy Lan Server 2.0 to get the diskettes. To my
- way of thinking this is simply ridiculous! Why should I be forced to buy
- Lan Server 2.0, in order to connect a OS/2 2.0 workstation to a Lan
- Server 1.3.1 server? Although, we will consider upgrading our servers to
- the new version (when it becomes available), this should NOT be forced
- upon us...!

-
- Since you already have the 1.3.1 server, you should be eligible for
- an upgrade (I don't know Canada's policy for EE and server upgrades).
- This will give you the requester connectivity that you wish ( I have
- several 2.0 requesters logged onto a 1.3 server).
-
- The reason why an upgrade is necessary is because of the internals of
- the LAN requester code and it's coexistence with the base OS. There
- were changes made which disallow a 1.3 requester to run on a 2.0 base.

- As far as I knew , you get a free (or 1$) upgrade in Canada from

- One minor correction. Those applications which support the notebook
- control for settings can be minimized to the desktop or the minimized
- window viewer on an application by application basis. In other words,
- you can have PM Chart in the viewer and OS/2 Window Commmand Prompts on
- the desktop.
-
- The problem with 3270 windows is that this application does not support
- notebook controls so (I assume) it either takes its cue from the
- System setting for minimized windows or always minimizes to the
- desktop like it did in OS/2 EE 1.3.
-
- | Also, the TOGGLE application that is shipped on the ES diskettes
- | might be useful for you. You could use it to specify keystroke
- | combinations that give the focus to 3270 sessions from any place
- | the desktop. Minimize them to the viewer to relieve desktop clutter
- | but still have quick access to them.

- Fire up the CM and select the options for the size, fonts, and screen

- I am by no means an expert on the HPFS file system, but I believe
- that it reserves area of the disk for its "nodes" which are like its

-
- You do not say in your append, but is the disk which reserves 3Mb much

- Do you have a dual boot system? Every time OS/2 touches a file it
- creates an extended attribute. The EA contains information like
- icon text, icon position on the desktop etc.. It is not critical
- information. If your EAs were disembodied from the files you are not
- in desparate shape. If you lost EAs from your root, files like
- EA DATA. SF - then you would have already noticed a problem and likely
- not appended anything as you'd be struggling with your system now.
- If you know which files are associated with the recovered EAs you can
- potentially try reattaching them using EAUTIL - but remember you
- are not getting much for the effort.
-
- About dual boot: Always be careful with files that you use in
- DOS which you also use in OS/2. OS/2 creates EAs for files, DOS
- apps no nothing about EAs and if they are using the same file
- and write it to disk - well the EAs are no longer properly
- associated with the file and chkdsk reports EA problems.

- You probably have OS/2 configured to use the 8514 for PM and the VGA for

- THANKS! Full Screen was being displayed from the VGA port. In
- Selective Install I de-installed VGA as a Secondary Display by
- selecting the NONE as the choice for a Secondary Display.
-
- Somehow this doesn't seem to be the way the Primary and Secondary
- display was supposed to work. That is, in order to make use of it,
- one needs to change the port that the monitor is plugged into or
- have 2 monitors plugged into each port at the same time.
-
- I thought that at best it would allow you to change resolution on the

- would effect the changes. Now I need to load 10 diskettes, albeit
- quickly, then reboot to make a video change.

-
- I'm not sure that I understand what you are saying, but the support is
- supposed to work as follows:
-
- - If you have two displays, then the presumption is that one of them
- is hi-res (e.g., 8514/A or Image/A adapter) and that the other one
- is plugged into the standard VGA port, and that both displays are
- powered on. PM takes over the hi-res tube, and full-screen stuff
- displays on the VGA tube. (This is the configuration that I have.
- One apparent anomaly is that WIN-OS2 sessions take over the entire
- hi-res tube and swith it into VGA (low-res) mode. Perhaps I have
- something configured wrong, but I don't care as the *only* thing
- that I use WIN-OS2 for is for running the on-line "help" facility
- that comes with the OS/2 version of CorelDRAW.)
-
- - If you have one display, then it is used by both PM and full-screen
- applications. If it is a high-res display, then PM will run it in
- hi-res mode (and will ignore the un-connected VGA port on the PS/2).
-
- Indeed, it can be somewhat annoying to change the configuration of your
- displays -- either adding a second tube, or getting rid of one of your
- (two) tubes. However, presumably you don't do this too frequently.

-
- Yes, this is a known problem which is documented in the README file
- which you can find under the INFORMATION icon on your OS/2 desktop.
- Certain games and applications which attempt to generate high quality
- sound through the PC speaker, such as games using the "RealSound"
- technology, do so by taking control of the CPU and issuing 16,000 to
- 30,000 interrupts per second. This activity is VERY unfriendly to a
- pre-emptive multi-tasking environment. The solution is to either turn
- off the sound feature of the offending program, change the DOS SETTING
- HW-NOSOUND, or use a sound board like an AD-LIB or SoundBlaster card.

-
- I've heard that such options are being considered, but the problem
- with these types of programs is that they were written without multi-
- tasking in mind and are explicitly designed to take ALL of the CPU's
- attention in order to maximize the sound quality of the PC speaker
- which was designed and implemented to only be able to generate modest
- beeps and tones. The fact that things like "RealSound" do what they
- do with such limited hardware is rather amazing in itself. It is no
- simple trick to get digitized audio out of the PC speaker, and it
- requires most of your machines resources to do it. If IBM were to
- add an option to the settings that would make this work, (most likely
- by essentially stopping all other processes) It would cause things
- like background communications to fail. This works under Windows because
- that is precisely what happens; Most everything else stops.

- Michael lets talk about sound and OS2. There isn't a IConf for this.
- Different results seem to happen. Running Time-Table of History (a
- CDROM - DOS program) seems to produce sound through the external
- speakers hooked to the CDROM drive. Howver, althought the speech
- is clear and normal, the sentences are often not complete, but stop,
- and then continue after a pause. On the other hand, Corel's ARTSHOW
- CDROM issues a message telling you that you can't view the TBOOK show
- and listen to sound at the same time, which is not what happens in
- the Time Table. Sherlock Holmes (CDROM) won't install at all,
- indicating in a DOS full-screen that it can't find the sound-board!
- M$ BookShelf (1991 Windows version) works fine, and seamlessly,
- but issues a pop-up that says M$ Multi-media extensions are
- required in order to provide sound! Some DOS games like ISHIDO,
- in pre-OS2 days, used to provide loud clear sound effects from
- the PC speaker; under OS2, the program works elegantly - but there
- is hardly any sound effects. Any "sound" ideas?

-
- See some of the previous appends. There seems to be two problems
- here. One is the herky-jerky sound. I have been able to cure

- same symptoms you describe (mouse tracks; keystrokes and clicks go into
- the buffer and all get executed when the system wakes back up). It has
- not happened too frequently, and does not appear to be reproducible
- (although I am in no hurry to reproduce this particular problem).
-
- I don't know what the cause is, nor do I know of any fix. I'll go bounce
- this one off of the internal OS2V2BUG forum and see if anything comes back.

- I too have been frustrated by this problem. However, I tried moving
- my SWAPPER.DAT (in CONFIG.SYS -> SWAPPATH=C:\OS2\SYSTEM 2048 4096)
- from my C: drive to my E: drive where I have more free space. The
- lockup problem has not recurred (I have my fingers crossed).
-
- My C: drive has a total of 40 MB. With OS/2 and the initial 4096 KB
- SWAPPER.DAT on C: I only had a little over 2 MB left. I would
- intermittently get message SYS1477 "... partition containing
- SWAPPER.DAT file is full" because of the 2048 KB min free.
-
- However, it seems that OS/2 is inconsistent in issuing this message.
- Or inconsistent in sensing and handling when SWAPPER.DAT reaches
- min free. I would get the message sometimes and at other time not;
- when lauching programs in the same sequence. When the message does
- not appear, its seems that that's when the lockup situation occurs.
-
- I ran a test as follows:
- Opened in this order the following applications:
- System Editor w/C:README,
- Productivity folder,
- System Editor, Icon Editor, Enhanced Editor, Database,
- Spreadsheet, PM terminal, Seek + Scan files, Calendar,
- Notebook.
-
- When I got to Notebook, OS/2 locked up. Other times when going
- through the same scenario as above, I'd get message SYS1477

-
- Anyhow, there may not be any substance to this but psycholgically

- Michael, I talked with a tech representative of ICOM Simulations in
- Wheeling, Il. today. He explained that some CDROM GAMES and other
- presentations are fully "integrated", and that they require more
- than the sound reproduction system in a CDROM drive. These programs
- he said require a sound card of the "pro" type. It seems the
- "non-integrated" type have separate tracks for sound and sight,
- thus the operating system and the CDROM can "handle" these without
- the need for a sound card! So I suppose I have to buy a sound card
- if I want to use some of my CDROM disks, however, the issue is

-
- 1) On the problem of the system stalling or Locking up from 1 to 10 mins.
- This problem appeared with the system formatted in Both HPFS and FAT.
-
- The problem appears with different side effects based on how the system was
- set up.
- a) When the system was formatted in FAT the stalling came more offen but
- folders opened and closed very quickly. Overall performance was good.
- b) When the system was formmatted under HPFS the stalling was more random but
- folders closed very slowly. They opened at an acceptable speed. When I say
- slow in closing I mean two to five seconds after selecting close the folder
- would close.
-
- 2) When the system was installed using FAT, it took about six mins.,after the
- tutorial showed, until all the Desktop Objects appeared.
-
- When the system was installed under HPFS, it took between 30 mins. to
- six hours, after the tutorial showed, until all the Desktop Objects appeared.
- The reason I stated a time of 30 mins. to six hours was that we install the
- system a number of times to verify problems and this was the results from the
- testing.
-
- Further, we found that when the system was installed under HPFS, that when
- the system was shut down, after being installed, then rebooted, the printer
- object would be missing. The strange thing about this was the system was able
- to print even without a printer object.
-
- The same installation under FAT did not cause this problem.
-
- We have also found that the file SWAPPER.DAT will become corrupt when place on
- an HPFS system. If the system is loaded under FAT the file was OK. To
- keep the file from getting a lost allocation error the SWAPPER.DAT was
- place in a seperate partition (20 megs) formatted under FAT. This corrected
- the problem. SWAPPER.DAT did not become corrupt when placed in a FAT
- partition.
-
- I have read that many of you have seen the so call Black hole ICON. Well
- there are problems (bugs) with OS/2 and the ICONS.
- To get back an ICON that has turned into a black hole, enter the setting note
- book, go to the tab for GENERAL. Pick EDIT ICON then once the ICON appears,
- exit the ICON Editor. The ICON will reappear.
-
- If you study the ICON OBJECT in a folder carefully you might have noticed
- something interesting. (Note Icon object found on left side of title bar)
- It does not appear as a mini form of the object. Try this experiment.
- Select a folder on the desktop like "TEMPLATE". Open the notebook for the
- folder. Go to the page for GENERAL. Now pick EDIT, from the ICON EDITOR
- pick SELECT All then COPY. This will place a copy in the clip board.
- Exit the ICON editor. Now select CREATE ANOTHER. When the ICON EDITOR
- appears (Blank icon ) select PASTE. Pick close but remember to save "YES"
- Close the note book. Open the Folder. Look at the ICON OBJECT now. It
- will be yellow and reflex the real shape of the larger ICON.
-
- Well that's all for now. Waiting to hear from you.

- You are not alone -- I experienced similar things when I installed.
-
- I had no idea that the incredibly long delay during install was related
- to HPFS (both of my drives are HPFS). A colleague believes that it is
- related to the size of the disk, so maybe it is initializing the HPFS
- structures one byte at a time. (During this 30-minute to 6-hour(?!)
- period, you will notice that the disk light blinks about once every fixe
- seconds.) I installed three times under "identical" conditions (with
- three different results!), and my inordinate delay was pretty stable at
- about 45 minutes. I installed onto a 315-MB ESDI disk.
-
- When you close a folder, OS/2 stashes the exact position of each icon
- (within the folder) into extended-attributes, which is why "close" takes
- such a long time (you would think that this would be the fastest thing
- that the system could do...). If you open the "Settings" menu, goto
- "Sort", select "by Name" and check the "maintain sort order" box, then
- both "open" and "close" will go much faster, since it will not have to
- farble around with the extended attributes and positions. And, as an
- added benefit, the stuff in the folder will be sorted by name!
-
- I have had my SWAPPER.DAT on each of my HPFS drives (boot drive, and the
- "other" drive) and have not encountered any "corruption" problems. I
- have been relatively fastidious about doing a full "Shutdown" before
- powering off at the end of the day, but I have also survived one power
- hit and a couple of hard system "hangs" that required the Big Red Switch.
- Knock on wood...
-
- I also experienced the same thing with the printer. I don't actually
- have a printer, but I needed to have the PostScript support installed so
- that it could be used by CorelDRAW's "print-to-file" function. During
- install, I said that I had a PostScript printer attached to LPT1, and it
- copied the device drivers. However, after the reboot(s), there was no
- printer apparent; also, CorelDRAW could not find the driver. So, I
- opened up the "Templates" folder and drug the Printer template to the
- desktop, and was able to get everything to work. The strange thing,
- though, is in the "printer characteristics" menu that pops up when you
- drag the printer template to the desktop, the icon for LPT1 was cross-
- hatched as if it was already "claimed" by some other printer. The next
- time I re-format and install this mess, I'm going to skip the printer,
- and then add it in after everything else is up and running.

- re: Swapper corruption;
- By corruption, do mean that CHKDSK reports allocation errors? This is
- normal (not an error). HPFS will reserve extra space for a file (if the
- program asks it to) to help reduce fragmentation. However, it does not
- modify the file size (in the directory entry) until the extra space is
- used. CHKDSK is just reporting that the directory entry's file size

- re: Icon object stuff;
- An "icon" is really and array of icons. If, in the Icon Editor, you
- select Device->List... (Ctrl+L), you will see a list of all the icons
- contained in the "icon". If the "icon" contains a small representation
- (for VGA, I think it is the "(Independent) 1 Bits/Pixel, 16x16..."), then
- this icon will be used in the title bar. If not, the primary icon is

- Subject: OS/2 Stalling and Poor Performance
-
- Again I want to thank everyone who has spent the time in replying and
- sharing their experiences with OS/2 2.0.
-
- I direct this to Mr. John A Pershing:
-
- On the topic of the file SWAPPER.DAT becoming corrupt. From the
- description you give on the lost printer icon and having the system
- take a long time to load, these are the results of a corrupt or lost
- allocation in the SWAPPER.DAT file.
-
- With regards to the printer driver that appear to be used but not
- visible this too is a result of the system becoming corrupt. Once
- this happens you can't even delete the driver if you wanted too.
-
- You also said that the next time you load the system you planned
- not to install the printer driver. Don't do that. What will happen is the
- last item install by the system will become corrupt instead of the printer
- driver. Then the next time the system is started it will crash.
- To verify or demonstrate that the SWAPPER.DAT file is corrupt, click on the C
- icon and select CHECK DISK. Since the disk is being used you can't select
- Write Corrections to Disk. Select Check. The system, in most cases, will
- report a problem was found. To check which file caused the problem, from an
- OS/2 command prompt window enter CHKDSK C:. The system in most cases will
- report a problem with SWAPPER.DAT.
- I have a procedure on how to install the OS/2 system under HPFS without losing
- the printer icon and preventing SWAPPER.DAT from being corrupt.
- 1) Boot on the installation disk and divide the system into two partitions.
- For example on a 320 meg hard disk, 300 megs for installable and 20 megs
- for the logial drive. Continue installing and format the first partition under
- HPFS.
- 2) Install the system as usual. Select the printer you want to install. When
- all the objects appear after the tutorial do the following:
- 3) Edit CONFIG.SYS, change the line SWAPPATH=C:\OS2\SYSTEM to SWAPPATH=D:\SWAP
- Save CONFIG.SYS
- 4) Do a system shut down. Reboot the system with the installation disk.
- Insert disk #1, when requested. When the Welcome to OS/2 panel is displayed
- press the ESC key.
-
- From the A prompt enter the following command FORMAT D: /FS:FAT
- 5) Once complete, create a directory on the D drive call SWAP
- enter MD D:\SWAP
- 6) Erase the old SWAPPER.DAT enter ERASE C:\OS2\SYSTEM\SWAPPER.DAT
- 7) Optional: Enter the command CHKDSK C: /F:2 to insure that the C drive is
- clear of errors
- 8) Remove the floppy disk and reboot.
- This time the system will not have a corrupt SWAPPER.DAT and you will find the
- printer object on the Desktop.
-
- I have a list of problems that I have found with OS/2 2.0 GA. Most have been
- verified and reported by IBM. If anyone would like the list just let me know.
-
- General Message.
-
- I have reported the stalling to IBM for over a month. I am now working
- directly with the OS/2 support team. I am still waiting for them to admit
- that this problem exist.
-
- Someone said that it is normal for chkdsk to report an error. This is not
- true. First a bug was found in chkdsk, second under FAT no errors are found.
- Finally if SWAPPER.DAT is located on another drive no errors will be reported.
-
- On the ICON Editor. The problem I stated about it not showing colors to the
- icon object was stated because it you edit an icon it will not be updated
- in the object icon either. Try drawing an X over an icon using EDIT. The
- change will not be reflected in the Icon Object.
- This problem has been reported and verified.
-
- Thanks to every one again

- Now that Commm Manager comes with the Rexx EHLLAPI interface, this is fairly
- easy. (The documentation for the HLLAPI interface gets installed when you
- install the Comm Manager API data structures. It is a .doc or .txt file in
- the cmlib directory. I sure wish it was in .inf format.)
-
- I issued a "connect" to an emulator session, and if it failed, called a
- SysSleep 30 to wait 30 seconds, and the try again. SysSleep is documented
- in the Rexx .Inf file, in the utility section.
-
- I am not at work, or I would attempt to paste the sample code.

- CHKDSK will (nearly) always give allocation errors on SWAPPER.DAT while
- the system is running. This is due to the way HPFS allocates space,
- NOT a bug in CHKDSK. You will also get occasional allocation errors
- on OS2.INI. This is not a problem, and does not represent a corrupt
- file. If you use the /f parameter (from diskette), the allocation
- errors are corrected (as they should be for a file that is not in use).
-
- When an application asks the system for disk space, it can specify how
- much it thinks it will need. HPFS will find enough CONTIGUOUS space
- to fulfill the request and reserve it for the application's file.
- When the file is closed, any "extra" allocation units are returned
- to the system.
-
- CHKDSK simply (and correctly) reports the discrepancy between the current
- file size, and the amount of space reserved on disk.
-
- The reason CHKDSK no longer reports errors in your setup is FAT doesn't
- do the look-ahead allocation. When an actual write operation requires
- a new allocation unit, FAT tries to find one, making the application wait
- while it looks.
-
- The missing printer and other problems are (probably unrelated) bugs.
-
- Some modifications to your install process that make things easier:
- 1a) On the OS/2 Setup and Installation screen, the Software Configuration
- action bar item will allow you to change OS/2 parameters, including
- the SWAPPATH. Since you are creating a dedicated SWAP partition, why
- add the overhead of a directory? Just set SWAPPATH=D:¢
-
- The Options pulldown will allow you to FORMAT other partitions WHILE
- the base system is being installed. (Multi-tasking during install!)
-
- Steps 3 thru 8 are either already taken care of, or unnecessary.
- 1b) As soon as the Desktop appears, SHUT DOWN IMMEDIATELY! Then you
- may reboot and start working.
-
- On the Icon Editor, if you draw the X on the 16x16 view (for VGA)
- it will show up in the Object's title bar icon as soon as you close
- (and save) the icon. It will appear right there on the Settings
- Notebook's title bar!

-
- 1 If you use the multitasking feature of OS/2 installation option, and format
- the D drive from the options menu you will still end up with a corrupt
- desktop. Please note that I have personally installed OS/2 2.0 GA over
- twenty times. Under HPFS it can load from anywhere from 30 mins. to 6
- hours. Once it loads (object appears) there is a good chance if you shut
- down, the next time you bring up the system, you will find that the printer
- object is missing. If you bring a printer object to the desktop and try to
- delete the driver you will find that it is not possible. What happens is the
- system say, in its selection DELETE but when you select it the driver remains
- listed. The procedure I gave of formmating the D partition from the
- installation disk was given just for the reason that the system will not be
- multitasking. These problems have been verified and an OS/2 team is working
- on it. They too have not been able,as of this time,to explain the source
- of this problem.I have tried what you said exactly and it failed.
-
- 2. CHKDSK in its self may report the truth about the system but never the
- less SWAPPER.DAT does not restore itself and in time will become corrupt and
- the system will crash. This interaction occurs when SWAPPER.DAT is located
- in an HPFS partition. Again this problem has been verified by the IBM OS/2
- team and a PMR exist for this problem.
-
- 3. Try using the EDIT button from the SETTING FOLDER in the GENERAL page.
- If you modify the object ICON it will not be reflected in the object ICON.
- IBM's OS/2 team has also discovered this problem and it also has been verified.
-
- PS: On the formatting the D drive from the Installation diskettes, after you
- see the A prompt you must insert disk #2. This disk contains the FORMAT
- command and the CHKDSK command.

- 1. I have also install OS/2 numerous times, all HPFS-only systems, and
- have never had these problems (except for the long initial load time).
- This is not to say that you are not having problems -- you (and others)
- obviously are. And it appears to be a serious one. My point is that
- these procedures have been extensively tested and work for the majority
- of users. As you said, the OS/2 team is working very hard to isolate
- and correct problems.
-
- 2. What specific error were you getting on SWAPPER.DAT? IF the messages
- read something like:
-
- The type of file system for the disk is HPFS.
- The HPFS file system program has been started.
- SYS0552: The system found file system errors on the
- disk specified.
- CHKDSK corrected an allocation error for the file \SWAP\SWAPPER.DAT.
- CHKDSK corrected an allocation error for the file \SWAP\SWAPPER.DAT.
- CHKDSK is searching for lost data.
- SYS0562: The system detected lost data on disk.
- CHKDSK has searched 100% of the disk.
-
- then YOU DO NOT HAVE A PROBLEM! These messages are normal and
- unavoidable while the system is active on the checked drive. They
- do not mean SWAPPER.DAT has been corrupted. If you boot
- from diskette and run CHKDSK, any problems found will be corrected
- (though you may have to run it several times to be sure). Every time
- the system is booted, it erases and reinitializes SWAPPER.DAT.
- I only turn my machine off on weekends, and have never had a crash
- due to SWAP file problems. I help run a PS/2 lab with 10 OS/2 machines
- connected by a Token ring network that has been up for weeks without
- a crash. The only problems I have seen regarding swapping are:
- 1 It doesn't shrink (fix available)
- 2 The system doesn't handle a nearly full swap partition very well.
- There may be others that I have not seen, but these are the major ones.
- The last has been known to crash the system. Did you get messages
- indicating that the SWAPPER partition was getting full? If so then
- that was the cause of your problems. (This is equivalent to running out
- of memory in the middle of an operation).

- 3. Again, the icon is really an array of icons. The system will
- select the correctly formated icon for your display. The system

-
- Independent Color Form (=VGA)
- (Independent)1 Bits/Pixel, 16x16, 0x0, 0x0

- Here are some experiments to try:
-
- 1. Create a Folder by dragging the Folder template to the desktop.
- 2. Open the Settings View for the Folder and go to the General page.
- 3. Select Edit to open the icon editor.
- 4. Select Device->List (or press Ctrl+L)
- 5. Select the appropriate device for your display
- For VGA this is: "Independent Color Form (=VGA)"
- For XGA and 8514: "8514 - 16 colors"
- 6. Press View (the selected icon will display in the editor) then
- press OK (to dismiss the Device List dialog.
- 7. Draw an "X" on the displayed icon
- 8. Select File->Save to save the icon (save all five choices), then
- close the icon editor.
-
- The folder icon in the Settings' General page and on the desktop should
- now have an X on it.
-
- To change the title bar icon, repeat the above steps, except:

- APAR is IBM acronymese for Authorised Program Activity Report or
- something similar. It was originally from the mainframe world, but
- applies to the PC world also. When a customer reports a problem to IBM
- via the official service support channels, and the problem is confirmed,
- an APAR is generated that tracks the problem. Each APAR has a unique
- number.
-
- Eventually the APAR will progress to the stage there is a fix available.
- (i.e. "there is a fix for APAR xxxxxx"). The fix will be sent to the
- person/organization that originally reported the problem. Other
- people who find out about the APAR can also request to be notified of
- the availability of an APAR fix.
-
- Not all APARs will finish their life (IBM terminology is "closed")
- as a fix. Some may eventually be determined as "working as designed",
- others (particularly if a major coding effort would be required to fix)
- may be closed as "SUG" (suggestion for inclusion in a future release),
- or as "DOC" (error was in documentation), as a "Permanent Restriction"
- or some other disposition.
-
- Eventually, APAR fixes will find their way into preventive maintenance,
- such as CSDs, and later into the next release/refresh of the product.
-
- (hope this doesn't leave you more confused than before...)

-
- How many of those files are executables?
-
- During installation of 2.0 the stupid install scanned your disk

- occupies a 2K cluster ... Thus, using back-of-envelope math, more than
- 50% of your disk is executables ....
-
- However, the cross-linked EA messages indicate that you might have a

- - booting off the Install disk,
- - proceeding to Disk 1,
- - exiting to OS/2 and change to Disk 2,
- - going to the A: drive and executing from Disk 2 "CHKDSK C: /F:3"

-
- Now, see what the size is.
-
- The size of EA DATA. SF on my disk is < 600K.

- Lionel,
- Sorry you've had to wait so long for an answer to this, I know of
- no direct way to select other directories of bitmaps for the lockup
- function, but you CAN do this for background bitmaps for folders
- or the desktop, and this also provides an indirect way of doing
- the lockup function as well.
-
- Selecting any bitmap as a desktop or folder backround:
- =====================================================
-
- Right Mouse Button click on the background of the desktop or folder
- and select the arrow by "Open" and select "Settings". Click on the
- "Background" tab. Make sure you've selected "Image", not "colour" as the
- background style, and then click on "Find", which is the key to using
- bitmaps other than the ones in \os2\bitmap. The "Find" dialog is
- NOT particularly intuitive, but here's how to select the directory
- for your bitmaps: Click on "Locate", then the "Path" tab, and then
- type in the drive & path where your bitmaps are stored, e.g.
- D:\mystuff\bitmaps Then click on "OK", click on "Find", and you
- should be given a window with a list of all the bitmaps in the chosen
- directory. Click on the one you want and then on "OK" to finish.
- Voila! Close the settings and your chosen bitmap is now shown as the
- desktop/folder background.
-
- Selecting any bitmap as the background for Lockup:
- =================================================
-
- Create a new folder, e.g. by dragging the folder object from the
- "templates" folder to the desktop. Use the procedure described
- above to make this folder display the bitmap of your choice
- as its background. Then size the folder to nearly fill the whole
- screen, leaving room to click on the desktop. Now open Desktop
- settings, and select the Lockup tab. Then click on the "right arrow"
- in the bottom right corner of the page (notice the "page 1 of 3"), and
- select "Partial Screen". Then close the desktop settings. This means
- lockup does not clear the screen, but just puts a bar across the
- top of thes screen. If you make sure your folder is occupying the
- screen when this happens, you effectively get the effect you're looking
- for. Keep the folder minimised (hidden), when the system is in use, and
- bring it up from the Window List (Ctrl-Esc) when you're about to lockup.
- This approach has 2 limitations: (1) Hassle, and (2) Won't bring up the
- bitmap for "automatic" lockups after a specified timeout. Hope it's
- a useful workaround nonetheless. Note that this approach can also
- be used to have some other window (e.g a DOS or PM program) provide
- the backdrop for your lockup. I have a DOS graphics animation program,
- for example.

- Subject: Loss of Sync - DOS app. w/SVGA
-
- System is a 386, 40MHZ, with a Diamond Speedstar SVGA card, OS2 2.0 with
- current fixes for SVGA, and "SVGA ON".
-
- Running Quatro Pro version 4.0, optioned for above SVGA card in SVGA in a DOS
- full screen session. The application executes in SVGA mode without problems
- until control is returned to the OS/2 desktop. Returning to the application
- results in an out of sync video display. I would guess that there isn't a
- mechanism for DOS applications to indicate to OS/2 which video state they were
- in, so the return (to the app) state is whatever OS/2 was in last. Yes/No?
- Is this the way it is designed? Spreadsheets are sure nice to read at 132x44!

-
- 7/21 - The solution to the above situation is to do an "orderly" exit (DOS
- shell) to VDM and then ctl-esc to WPS rather than ctl-esc directly from the
- application. In this way the application retains "responsibility" for
- restoring the video mode on the return. It seems this may be required
- with other applications where VIDEO CHANGE NOTIFICATION doesn't work.JA

- I have had the same problem and reported it to phone support immediately. My
- initial (free) support expired, without any real interest in this bug. I
- subscribed to this service to continue persuing this defect, and more than 3
- weeks later, I still haven't any more information beyond what I myself have
- discovered, and now what I've read in this thread. I'm willing to do most any-
- thing to get this repaired, as it apparently affects the stability of the
- entire system - and gets worse as time goes on...

- Subject: Problem with the START command?
-
- I have created a directory into which I have 2 objects: an EXE and
- an ICO. Using the program setting of the EXE I have associated the
- ICO to the EXE.
-
- The EXE is called CM000S00.exe and the ICO is called CM000S00.ICO.
- When I start the EXE with the Command START CM000S00, I can see
- at the bottom of the screen the ICON associated with the EXE, but
- the Title under it is CM000S00.EXE. If I do start it with
- START "SCHEDULER" CM000S00, I see at the bottom of the screen my
- new Title, but the OS/2 folder ICON is now associated to it.
-
- This used to work under OS/2 1.3, Am I doing something wrong? Is
- there a solution to this? This appears to be a problem to me.

-
- Survey - Stalling when Launching Program Object and overall Poor Performance
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- On 06/09/92, I reported the poor performance and stalling condition that
- was exhibited while operating OS/2 2.0 on the OS2-BBS. I also requested
- if others also have had this problem. I received many replys. Some stated
- they had the problem but were trying different fixes to solve the problem.
-
- It also appears that many of you have tried to report this problem to IBM but
- have not had any resolution forth coming. I too have reported this problem
- to the IBM OS/2 support for the past two months. After persistent calling
- I was able to make connections to the OS/2 support team. They have yet to
- admit that this problem exsit. They seem to feel that it is a very
- isolated problem. If anyone should call the 1 800 237-551 IBM support number,
- with the stalling problem, you should tell them that you have the same problem
- as reported on PMR 6X856.
-
- It took a bit of work but it seems that the support team will be examining this
- problem more closely. On 07/10/92 they will try to locate the cause or source
- of this problem. The Level 2 team has sent me a Remote Kernel Debugger
- program. With this program they will be able to monitor the computer and
- hopefully locate the fault.
-
- One IBM Support team personal, which will remain nameless, had the gall
- to tell me that if I was not satisfied with OS/2 2.0, I could get my
- money back. That brings back the memories of the Old IBM. The
- interesting thing about this problem is that it happens on IBM PS/2
- machines.
-
- After IBM completes its testing I will display the results on the OS2-BBS.
-
- What would be a big help is if anyone else who has had this problem could
- Email me their system configuration. Please include you model and manufacturer
- of the computer system. Also, it is important that you include the memory
- type and the vendor of all adapters in the system. I will then submit this
- information to the IBM OS/2 support team.
-
- I would also like to know if anyone else, who has had this problem, has
- resolved this condition. How did you do it?
-
- From what I see, I don't believe IBM realizes or wants to accept how many
- systems have this problem. They even said that they don't or can't
- support third party adapters for OS/2.
-
- OS/2 2.0 is a terrific and powerful operating system but IBM must acknowledge
- the problems that users have found. If they deny the exsistance of the
- numerious bugs in OS/2, IBM, will force the many users and non users of OS/2
- to Windows or NT. IBM should list on the OS2-BBS, a list of all known and
- reported problems found in OS/2 2.0. They should also display their current
- status on each problem. I get tried of recreating the wheel. It makes
- everyone report the same problem endlessly.
-
- They other problem seems that the customers (us) who use OS/2 are able to
- locate the bug but the IBMers seem to say they don't exist.
-
- Well, I think I said enough for now............

- Jerry,
- I read your remarks and was curious to see where your PMR stood. It has
- certainly had a lot of activity and personal attention from our IBM
- support. From our database I pulled a total of 9 PMR's on your
- name and this problem. It appears that you have had a number of OEM
- hardware problems that have slowed the resolution process.
- We are working hard to give all of our customers the support they need
- and deserve. We do have a volume of calls each day with a product as
- new and aggressive as OS/2. Thankfully, we are responding to ALL of
- our calls and solving hundreds of problems and questions each day.
- Due to the fact that there are so many OEM machines out there with
- every sort of configuration, and we are supporting most, we have a few
- problems that need to be addressed on an individual basis, such as yours.
- Be patient with us and know that we are working long hours to provide
- you with the answers you need.

- This probably will not help everyone who has the hesitating problem,
- but if it helps one of you then at least one person will be happy...
- My PS/2 M80 here at work would pause to do anything on the desktop.
- Later, I had a totally unrelated hardware problem for which I called the
- 1(800)IBM-SERV number for. When the CE was working on the problem she
- noticed that the non-cached SCSI card in my machine was one that had a
- mandatory EC (hardware update) issued for it when using OS/2 2.0. She
- replaced the card. No approval was necessary as it was a no cost fix.
- I assume that would apply to any customer, internal or external.
- The performance may still be slow when frantic paging is going on
- when switching to a task that has been paged out, but now the system
- *responds* to mouse actions. I would say it cut my frustration level
- 90%.
- If you have a non-cached SCSI card and are experiencing hesitation
- for no apparent reason, I would highly recommend pursuing this
- hardware fix. I am sorry that I don't have a number for you to
- reference, but just knowing that it exists may be the right key to
- finding out if it applies to you.

- If anyone has an IBM Non-cached SCSI adapter in a Model 80, check
- the FRU number located on the card. If it has the following number
- FRU 15F6561, it should be replaced.
- Call IBM at 1 800 IBM SERV, Ask for Hardware change ECA-032.
- The replacement card number should be marked FRU 85F002.
- In most cases there is no charge for this change.
-
- I recommend that when the card is replaced that you check the
- new card. Some older card still exist in IBM stock.
-
- This card will fix a timing and performance problem but it does
- not solve the random stalling problem.
