- Roger,
-
- OS/2 V2 is SE only. There's no EE version because Extended Services

-
- Roger,
- Just to elaborate a little on Karl's reply to you:
-
- OS/2 V2.0 does not have a Standard Edition & Extended Edition like we've
- had in the past. It is simply OS/2 V2.0.
-
- Extended Services (ES) has the Communications Manager and Database
- Manager.
-
- LAN Server (LS) has both the LAN Server code as well as the OS/2 & DOS
- LAN requester code.
-
- The GA date for both ES and LS has been moved up to April 10, so it
- won't be very long before they are available.

- Subject: Printers outside a domain in OS/2 2.0 GA
-
- Back in OS/2 1.3, I had two printers defined on a LAN. To get access to
- them, I used the NET.EXE command to logon to a domain (HOUDOM01) and then
- I accessed the printer address "externally". For instance:
-
- NET USE LPT2 \\HD7LPTR\LZPTR
-
- After this command was issued, I would port all printouts to LPT2, either
- from an OS/2 window or from an OS/2 application, such as PMWord.
-
- With OS/2 2.0, the configuration described above has not given me
- positive results. Printouts from an OS/2 window do get printed out;
- however, printouts sent from an OS/2 application do not.
-
- Any ideas, suggestions, comments?

-
- Raul,
- A couple of ideas - we had the same sort of thing happen to us.
- From a 2.0 requester trying to print to a 1.3 LS printserver, it
- worked from the command line just fine - but did not work from an
- application (specifically FLG for OS/2). When we installed the
- 1.3 print driver onto the 2.0 requester, we were able to print
- directly from the application as well.
- A sort-of workaround was to print to a file, go to the command
- line, and then send it to the printer (this was using PostScript).
- Just some experiences - hope it helps.

-
- At present, there are some technical problems with downloading from the
- OS/2 BBS. Hopefully these will be solved shortly. We are also finalizing
- what will go into the library and what file pack/unpack utility to use.
-
- We will add a news item(s) to the BBS "News and Announcements" as soon
- as this is functional and there is software to download.
-
- To answer your question about how to use the download:
-
- 1. Indicate which item(s) you wish to download.
-
- 2. Select the option to start the download.
-
- 3. A host session to download from will display, this can be changed.
-
- 4. A list of all items "tagged" for download appears, use "S" to select
- those you want to download with this set.
-
- 5. The default workstation ("PC") filename is displayed, this can be
- changed also. On this screen is a field to place the cursor and enter
- when ready.
-
- 6. You will see the panel about "SHOWRECV". Use F1-Help for more detailed
- instructions. Switch to an OS/2 session and type in the commands the
- F1 shows.
-
- 7. After the download, press enter to end the "SHOWRECV" panel. We are
- going to change this panel to be more meaningful in the near future.

-
- In OS/2, your DLL paths are found in a variable called LIBPATH. They do
- not come from your PATH statement. Your LIBPATH statement can ONLY be
- specified in CONFIG.SYS - it cannot be specified or changed in a BAT or
- CMD file, or at the command line. The format of the statement is the
- same as the PATH statement, but must NOT have the word 'SET' in front.
- If you want the current directory to be considered in your LIBPATH, you
- must put it in specifically, by adding period followed by semicolon.
-
- LIBPATH=C:\OS2\DLL;.; etc.
- --
-
- Your PATH statement automatically includes the current directory, but
- your LIBPATH does not.

- As far as we know at this point, the "View New" should be working
- however, as mentioned in a previous append, there is a 5 hour "window"
- in which an item will continue to be considered "new" even though
- you may have seen it. After an item becomes 5 hours "old" to the BBS
- system software AND you have viewed it (or had it shown in the list
- of entries with "View New"), then the "View New" should no longer
- show it.
-
- The way the "View New" works presently is a "feature" of the software
- the OS/2 BBS is based on. There is ongoing discussions about changes
- but these will not be implemented anytime soon.
-
- We could easily "turn off" the 5 hour of "newness" effect that presently
- exists. BUT - if we do - once an item has been in the list of new items
- from a "View New", it will never be "new" again; whether you view the
- item or not. The 5 hour "newness" retention effect is now there to give
- you more than one chance at a new item.

- No, all bulletin board items are not always "new" everytime you
- log on. What will happen on occassion is that the bulletin board
- topic will be "refreshed"; that is, all existing items are reposted
- in mass. This is needed at times for maintenance and recovery
- reasons.
-
- When this "refresh" does occur all items will be "new" the next time
- you access that bulletin board topic or forum; and all older than
- five hours will at that point become "old" and will not reappear if
- you exit and select the topic again.
-
- I apologize to all for the "View New" being as unpredictable as it has

- Support;
- Am I correct in assuming that neither version of the PMHPO (i.e. either
- version 1.00 or 1.01) has the RECEIVE command on it? It does not exist on
- the disks I have, and it does not exist in the base operating system.
- What is going on?
- Additionally, I received version 1.01 of PMHPO with a note saying that
- version 1.00 would hang the machine. Well sorry to say but 1.01 hangs my
- machine cold every time I try to start up the program. I put 1.00 back on
- because I never had any problems with it.

-
- Neither version of PMHPO has the SEND/RECEIVE implemented yet. A new
- version with this and a number of fixes will be sent to all who were
- sent earlier versions; hopefully before the end of the month but I
- have no committed date at this time.
-
- The latest version sent (1.01) has a problem starting the first time
- if COM1 is allocated for something other than a modem; for example,
- a serial mouse. It will "hang" the system. This can be bypassed by:
-
- 1. "Highlight" the PMHPO icon with one mouse click.
- 2. Disconnect the mouse from COM1.
- 3. Start PMHPO by pressing ENTER.
- 4. Use F10 to activate PMHPO action bar.
- 5. Press Enter for "Options", Enter for "Setup".
- 6. Use TAB and Arrow keys to position at COM selection and select
- COM2 or COM3.
- 7. TAB to OK, press Enter.
-
- The mouse can now be reattached to COM1 and PMHPO 1.01 will start
- without hanging as long as its Setup is not changed back.
-
- This problem should be corrected in the next version. Version 1.00
- did not have this problem.

- Different people accessing these public bulletin boards (fora) are
- using different interfaces. If you are using the standard online
- interface for the US OS/2 BBS, it does not automatically place your
- user signature on the item you submit.
-
- Other interfaces, like the ICONF used in Canada and some used by IBM'ers

-
- For the US interface, changing the software to automatically "sign" the
- item is an excellent idea which we will implement as soon as we can.

- Wouldn't this be because DosRead() is unbuffered I/O (like MVS BSAM),
- while fread() is buffered (like MVS QSAM)? In other words the Operating
- System performs unbuffered I/O while the object code generated by the C

- The IBM 3852 Jetprinter was discontinued and is no longer supported

- This depends upon the communication software you use, and the
- IConf interface access you have. Our IConf interface allows us
- to re-direct output to where we want - either binary or ascii files.
- Thus I often download large print files to the University mainframe,
- while I download smaller binary files to my PC at home. There is a

- Lou,
-
- If you were asking about forum entries and their answers.....
-
- Yes, any replies should have the same Subject as you first entered.
- A quick way to see all of the items with the same Subject (and thus
- whether you have a reply) is to use the "FIND" function. Select "View
- All", then FIND, then enter enough of a string to make your subject
- unique. The BBS will then show you a subset of all appends that
- have a subject that match the find string. The end result is all
- of the same subject become grouped together.
-
- Once viewing one, you can then use F9 and F10 to move forward and
- backward one append at a time, still on the same subject.

- Lionel,
-
- While in the BBS "Text Editor", use "F6-Suffix". This will put some
- "====" at the right hand side of the display. Do not worry if these
- overlay some text, the text is still there. Use F6 again to turn
- this "off".
-
- While the Suffix is displayed, you can use standard XEDIT line
- commands in the suffix area. For those that do not know XEDIT, some
- options are:
-
- i - insert line (after)
- d - delete line
- c - copy line, indicate where with a "p" (above line with "p") or
- "a" (after line with "a").
- m - move line, indicate where with "a" or "p".
-
- Any of these commands can be followed by a count. For example, "i4"
- will insert 4 lines; "d99" will delete the next 99 lines (or to end
- of text). This also works for copy and move.
-
- Block copies, moves and deletes can be done by two command characters
- together, on two lines. For example, to delete a block of lines, put
- "dd" on the first to delete and "dd" on the last. All lines between
- and the "dd" lines will be deleted. "cc" and "mm" work the same way
- for copy and move but you must also use "p" or "a" to indicate where.
- "p" or "a" cannot be within the copy or move block.
-
- I hope this helps with using the BBS Text Editor.

- Hello;
-
- You have the command 90% correct. The mistake you made was on the end of the
- receive command line. Do not include the SHOWTOPC at the end of the
- command line.
- After you execute the RECEIVE command a file is transfered to your system
- from the OS/2 BBS called SHOWTOPC. To download the file you want enter the
- command SHOWTOPC at the OS/2 prompt. This batch contains the command
- line(s) required to download the file(s). By the way if you mark a series

- I'm not entirely sure what you're asking, but...
-
- If you format a partition for HPFS using OS/2, you CAN access
- the data on that partition from any DOS, Windows or OS/2 application
- RUNNING UNDER OS/2.
-
- If, having formatted that partition for HPFS, you then booted
- PC/DOS (say, from diskette), you would be unable to access ANYTHING
- on that partition - DOS wouldn't even recognize the drive letter.

- Hope this helps...

- Rob, with only 1 or 2 Meg of memory on the hard drive left, your
- SWAPPER.DAT file cannot 'grow' when it needs to. If you've partitioned
- the hard drive, keeping the operating system separate from your
- applications, and you have more space left on the applications drive,
- you can change the SWAPPATH= statement to point to that drive. If
- you just have a C: drive, you'll have to remove some applications or
- data to make room for the SWAPPER.DAT file. I have a separate partition
- for my SWAPPER.DAT and SPOOL directory. Today, I swapped out a maximum

- I don't have all the answers but I can help you on some items.
-
- To remove a duplicated template, open the template notebook.
- As you go through the pages you will find a check box that says
- Template. Uncheck this box. Close the notebook. Now you can drag the
- template to the shredder and it will be deleted. I too learned the hard
- way.
-
- As for the problem of setting up DOS variable. Create a DOS object.
- Drag a Program object to the Desktop. Select either DOS full screen or window
- In the first page of the notebook enter the full path name of the
- program you are going to execute. Include the working directory.
-
- In the Note book turn to the DOS Setting area. Look for the setting
- SHELL=C:\OS2\MDOS\COMMAND.COM /P
- change the /P to /K <space> enter the full path name of the autoexec you
- want to start.
- EXAMPLE:
- SHELL=C:\OS2\MDOS\COMMAND.COM /K C:\PSPICE\AUTOEXEC.BAT
-
- At this time save all your changes. You can if you like go to the last
- page (window) and create your own ICON. Save the note book.
-
- Open an OS/2 command prompt and change to the directory where the
- program will resides. Create the custom AUTOEXEC.BAT
- EXAMPLE
- E C:\PSPICE\AUTOEXEC.BAT
-
- ECHO OFF
- CLS
- SET TEMPSPICE=C:\TEMP
- SET PARM=/W
-
- save the file.
- PS: by the way you didn't have to call it autoexec.bat
- It is also possible to directly execute a batch from the shell. If you do
- the system will not be able to automaticlly update the object location if you
- move the file.
-
- If you only lost the ICON templete you should first do a CHKDSK /F
- from the OS/2 boot disks first. If this does not restore the object
- copy a data file template and rename it to ICON. Open its notebook and
- make any changes needed. This should work. (Do this in the template folder)
- or
- Find an .ICO file and copy it into the template folder. Open the note
- book and find the selection box TEMPLATE. Check it. Next go to the
- last page (window) and select default icon.
- This should restore the template. Close the note book
-
- I hope this will help.
- If you need or speak to someone you can call (voice) remember that.

- But I copy a .ICO file from another folder and rename it to folder
- without problem. Then enable it as a Template.
- About the DOS setting, I found the DOS setting area and look for the
- DOS_SHELL line, I change the line from C:\OS2\MDOS\COMMAND.COM
- C:\OS2\MDOS /P into C:\OS2\MDOS\COMMAND.COM C:\MDOS /K C:\G4\AUTOEXEC.BAT
-
- In the AUTOEXEC.BAT within the G4 directory:
- path c:\g4
- set gmk4=c:\g4\
-
- When I start the Gammertik IV program, it came out with a DOS window
- with path and set command such as the autoexec.bat but cannot start G4
- I have to manually type G4 to start the program and type exit after quit
- to close the window. Finally I add the G4 and EXIT as the last two line
- in the batch file.
- Is there something I miss in the notebook? I already put c:\g4\g4.exe

- I glad I was able to help.
- I think the reason the AUTOEXEC.BAT is not working 100% is because you
- set the path. You don't need it. OS/2 is so smart that once you tell it
- where the working program is it knows how to point to the program.
- It's hard to accept but in OS/2 DOS VDM works with out setting path
- because each program only needs to look for itself within each VDM.
-
- Its like running one program per each DOS session.
-
- Just make sure that you have the working directory pointing to the
- location where your program is located.
-
- Glad to be of service
-
- PS: the reason you couldn't copy a template was that you must first change
- a Template back to an object (Uncheck template box) then you can copy it.
- After you have two in the folder with different names change them back to
- templates (Check template box).

- then you are converting the files from EBCDIC to ASCII without even

- I had some simple questions. I have a 486 clone with the A drive set
- as 5 1/4 and B drive 3.5. The instructions say that I need to reassign
- my drives so that the A drive is 3.5 and further directs me to contact
- my vendor or technical documentation for assistance. Is this true? It seems
- a lot of trouble to make me go through to install OS2 2.0.
-
- I presently use INPCS HPO as my communication program. Through numerous
- problems with the program and the BIOS I got it to work. My modem is set
- to COM 4 and the program goes to the BIOS for COM settings. The program
- is set to look at COM 3. It works now just fine. What Com program will run
- under OS2 2.0 since I understand it does not come with a Communications
- Manager? I'm really eager to install it, but I'd like to avoid wasted time.
-
- Thanks, Mike SFOVMIC1(MFEIN)

- OS/2 is installed via a bootable drive. This is why the requirement
- to install from A drive. If you have the option of returning the
- 3.5 inch and getting High Density 5.25 inch disks, you might want
- to take that route... Otherwise, you will need to reassign the
- drives somehow.

-
- There is a 5 1/4" version of OS/2 2.0, try getting that. If you do not
- change the CMOS when switching drives, you will not be able to complete
- install, so read the info carefully. Another option is to get INSTB.ZIP
- on this BBS. It will create 2 5 1/4" diskettes that will allow you to
- boot them and complete the install from B: without altering your H/W.
-
- Get the latest COMMGA.ZIP from this BBS, and read the README.1ST file to
- see how to define COM4 correctly, this should allow you to work.

- First, I'd suggest the Netware forum for future questions. I can respond to
- some of your questions: yes, you want the OS/2 2.0 Netware Requester, which
- lets you log on from the desktop and also from emulated DOS sessions, hence

- If you can get the SHOWTOPC batch file downloaded, then the rest of it
- should work. Do you get this problem everytime or has it just occured once?
- I've heard of other people having this problem on a temporary basis.
-
- What I would suggest is that you give it another try. For testing purposes,
- you might want to only select the TURBO fix. It's the smallest one available
- so it if does work it will download quickly. If this works then you can try
- and download the ones you need.
-
- If you run into the problem again, then I would suggest that you hit F3 to
- back out all the way to the BBS main menu, then go back in, reselect the
- items you want, and try again. If that still doesn't work, then please add
- another append in the OS2BBS forum and we'll see what we can do to better

- The Service Pack is not yet available on the bulletin board. It has
- announced as being available in the future but not as of today. The
- only announced product is the beta release of the 32 bit engine which

- I figured the problem after eliminating "moving targets." The offender in this

-
- I logged onto IBMLink directly through VTAM (no session manager) and the

- Ref: Append at 18:32:48 on 92/10/27 GMT (by PABS024 at OS2CUST)
-
- Wally,
-
- In the OS2 directory there are two INI files that should be
- "backed up" by copying them into the OS2\INSTALL directory.
- Unfortunately, the only way to do this is by booting off the
- install diskettes, then use "Esc" at the Welcome screen to get a
- command prompt. The reason is these INI files are "active" when
- booted from the hard disk and cannot be copied. Also note that
- there are already backup copies of these INI files in OS2\INSTALL
- as of installation. Do not copy over these, rename them before
- copying the newer versions into OS2\INSTALL
-
- Then if your Desktop ever does get corrupted, pressing ALT-F1
- while the system is booting will cause it to rebuild the desktop
- from the INI files saved in OS2\INSTALL. You may want to copy any other
- INI files into OS2\INSTALL for safekeeping but these will not be
- affected by the ALT-F1 rebuild. What you can do is if a rebuild
- is necessary, after OS2 uses its two INI's to rebuild and reboot,
- you can copy any others out of OS2\INSTALL to their original directories.
- This restore copying of non system INIs may require booting off of
- diskette also.

- I haven't tried this myself, but some people in my department have told me
- that the Presinstalled OS/2 V2.00.1 (or whatever they are calling this) has
- a new 'special' backup program that allows you to do a *complete* backup of
