¢¢ >>>>>>>>>>>>>****<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< ¢¢MINUTES OF THE SEPTEMBER 1991 MEETING.¢--------------------------------------¢¢¢GENERAL MEETING:¢¢PAUL PLANTS, a member of WACO, called¢ALEX and asked for a list of club¢members names and addesses and¢explained the purpose of the list was¢to build an 8 bit user base. It is not¢to be used commercially or given out.¢As requested, ALAN SHARKIS wrote a¢letter to PAUL PLANTS, and mailed our¢membership list but he did not include¢all our telephone numbers.¢¢CORRESPONDENCE:¢¢STAN SCHENFELD responded to JOHN¢JOHNSON's letter. JOHN is a new¢member, and he wanted to know if there¢are reduced dues for out of town¢members. The answer is no. The reason¢is, it costs us more for out of town¢members because we have to mail the¢newsletter disk, and sometimes other¢material to them. (NOTE: Cost of¢postage went up, and the dues were¢recently lowered from $30.00 per year¢to $24.00).¢¢As requested, a letter was sent to JOE¢WATERS editor of CURRENT NOTES by STAN¢SCHENFELD. He inquired if there is a¢special discount for clubs, and¢members.¢¢We received a letter from our SYRACUSE¢member, TOM ANDREWS. He thanked us for¢the money award OL' HACKERS sent him.¢He said he was surprised to get the¢SHAREWARE AWARD. He said he will¢invest his award in a subscription to¢CURRENT NOTES. A good example of a way¢to help build a heavy 8 BIT reader¢base, by subscribing to C.N..¢¢From our ENGLISH member, JIM CUTLER.¢He received our 2 packages of disks.¢He sent us 3 packages of 4 disks each¢for our club library. He read in our¢NEWSLETTER reviews column about HOW TO¢CONVERT ATARI LANGUAGE TAPES TO DISK.¢It was reviewed by ALAN SHARKIS from a¢FRANTIC newsletter. He asked for a¢photo copy of the article. ALAN¢promised to mail it to him.¢¢ALEX wrote to our member, BEN¢POEHLAND, 8 BIT editor of CURRENT¢NOTES magazine, and pointed out that¢you can learn a great deal of¢programming when you type in a¢program. It would be great if C.N.¢would have a type in section and it¢would increase the 8-Bit readership.¢ALEX also pointed out that the¢articles should be flagged as to ST or¢8-Bit in order to make the magazine¢more useful. ALEX also sent BEN the 3¢disk set of the PROGRAMMING KIT by RON¢FETZER of the OL' HACKERS.¢¢BEN POEHLAND responded. He will send¢the magazines for HORST DE WITZ to¢take to Germany. He also said that he¢prepared a ceremonial address to be¢read to the BIT BYTERS in Germany, at¢their annual meeting. BEN writes us¢that there is a rumor that the CHICAGO¢ATARI SHOW may be canceled due to¢ATARI CORP'S seeming lack of follow¢up. BOB BRODIE the rep. for ATARI has¢not answered his E-MAIL for three¢months. This does not look very¢promising. He said that ALEX'S idea of¢type in software in each issue of¢CURRENT NOTES, sounded good and he¢will discuss it with the editor. He¢tells us about 2 programs from an¢outfit in N.J. called CHROMA CAD an¢incredible 3-D VIDEO COLOR GRAPHICS¢GENERATOR for the XL and XE computers.¢The manuals are beautifully written¢but there are no printer drivers for¢your creation. You have to send it¢back to the company for it to be¢printed. They are working on a¢modification. BEN asked if we knew ED¢HALL from CANADA. ALEX wrote that he¢knows of ED HALL. We had wanted ED to¢join us, but FRANTIC got him first. If¢ED pays the club dues of $24.00 we¢would be glad to welcome him to the¢OL' HACKERS as a full member, and he¢would get the benefit of lower¢subscription to CN. ¢ALEX also told BEN that he contacted¢HORST about the C.N. magazines he is¢to bring to BIT BYTER W. Germany to be¢put in their lending library. They¢currently have over 800 8 BIT members.¢MORE POWER FOR THE 8 BIT!¢¢ALEX wrote to our member HADJILA N. in¢Algeria, AFRICA (a first) informing¢him that he is accepted as a member of¢our club until the end of this year.¢We returned his Algerian money. If he¢wants to remain a member then he will¢have to send us international currency¢for his 1992 dues.¢¢¢COMMENTS:¢¢ALEX spoke up as the Co-Editor of the¢newsletter. As such, he and CARLOS¢HURTADO must have the right to make¢changes in articles that are submitted¢to them, within their own discretion.¢The members agreed with that.¢¢ALEX said he will print up a 100¢copies of our letterhead for us to use¢in correspondance.¢¢We discussed further future AWARDS to¢SHAREWARE AUTHORS. The next award is¢to be given in January, 1992.¢¢THE BOSTON COMPUTER SOCIETY selected¢RON FETZER'S PROGRAMMING KIT as the¢Disk of the Month. The BCS is very big¢and they cover all computer. It is a¢feather in the both RON FETZER and OL'¢HACKERS cap's to have been selected.¢RON has gotten much well deserved¢recognition from all over for his¢great job on TURBO BASIC.¢¢ATARI EXPLORER offered us a discount¢subscription program of only $9.95 for¢club members. ALAN SHARKIS said that¢A.E. wrote about a guy who creates 8¢BIT educational programs using PD and¢shareware. HAROLD PEGLER said recent¢issues had had very little for the¢8-Bit computer, but there were two 8¢BIT articles in the latest issue. A¢good sign that they recognize that¢there is a big 8 BIT base out there.¢We are getting a free subscription¢for the club, and will watch the¢direction of the mag.¢¢ITEM:¢¢ALAN SHARKIS announced he will have a¢mini meeting in his house on Saturday¢Nov. 16 at 1:30 PM. Please let ALAN¢know if you are coming by giving him a¢call a few days before. He will show¢what the SIO2-PC can do. ALAN lives in¢East Meadow at 43 Rose Drive. He will¢give us instructions on how to get to¢his house. He said, NEWSDAY'S BBS¢started to worry about sales tax on¢software that is downloaded. This has¢been resolved by JIM HARRIS, Sysop of¢LIAUG's NEW NEST BBS (at (516)¢234-4943), who contacted I.R.S. and¢received the publication, which¢clearly says taxes are due if programs¢are SOLD, not if they are uploaded, or¢downloaded. So relax folks!¢¢RECEIVED:¢¢We received 2 disks from JOHN MC¢GOWAN, St. Louis. Disk #1 has a lot of¢programs in arced form. It has a lot¢of utilities, games and DOC. files. It¢is really a loaded disk. JOHN MC¢GOWAN's disk NO 2. It has DDII and NX¢10, TEXPRO FONT LOADER, MAILMERGE,FILE¢SEARCH, CODESMITH II, FILELOAD, MAX¢LOAD, TP 4.54C COM (NEWEST TEXTPRO¢VERSION), PSDDIII (PRINTSHOP ->¢DAISYDOT). They are all in arced form.¢You will end up with several disks¢when you unarc both of them. LOADS OF¢INFORMATION, UTILITIES, etc. Get them¢for your library!¢¢We have a disk from CLUB CENEGAL -¢GRAPH MASTER.(for 1029 PRINTER -¢written in French). It takes up the¢whole side of the disk.¢¢We have the SEPTEMBER AIM magazine¢disk. It has a a couple of bible¢games on it and a Paint utility and PS¢utility. Both sides of the disk are¢full, and they are also all in arced¢form. Another loaded disk value!¢¢BIT BYTER disk called MAGIC PLAYER.¢HORST in the last newsletter explains¢what it does. It is loaded with music¢files. Side two has games on it. It is¢a German disk.¢¢A disk from JACG, New Jersey, (BATCH¢#5) - all games disk. It is going into¢the library.¢¢NOTE:¢An order form program for ordering PD¢disks will be on the next newsletter.¢You type in your order and print it¢out and send it to HAROLD PEGLER, our¢librarian. His address is on the order¢form.¢¢¢DEMONSTRATIONS:¢¢ALEX, thinking that he had no¢volunteers for demo's, proceeded to¢show us some he thought we would like¢to have. (He forgot about RON's demo,¢and HAROLDS was unexpected, but BOTH¢WERE VERY WELCOME! See below.)¢¢ALEX demonstrated the 850 EXPRESS, so¢that the new modem members can decide¢which terminal progrem they like.¢¢Then he demonstrated his ENVELOPE¢PROGRAM that allows you to print your¢address and addressee on a regular or¢business envelope.¢¢He next demonstrated his heavily¢modified DISK LISTING PROGRAM that¢list your disk directory as you boot¢up. It lists the directory as a text¢file on your Ram Disk. You can chain¢several disk directories together as¢one file and save it as a text file.¢Then manipulate it via your own word¢processor.¢¢ALEX demonstrated a modification to¢RON FETZER'S DOC PRINT PRO program. He¢made several mods for different disk¢drives and printout choices. He¢created a terrific title screen. He¢created a second disk with more¢changes on it. ALEX said the last mod.¢was made on 9/9/91 just before this¢meeting, and it will go into the¢library. Will it ever end? Who knows?¢Ask ALEX!¢¢He demonstrated "HAPPY.BAS", a program¢that modifies the HAPPY SOFTWARE 7.1¢SECTOR COPIER so it will be compatible¢with most 256K compatible XE/XL¢upgrades.¢¢LABEL MASTER was next shown by him. A¢good label program.¢¢He showed a mod. to a program that he¢did, that shows if the programs are¢protected or not protected. It is only¢8 sectors long.¢¢He then showed us another program that¢prints out a THANK YOU NOTE with your¢name etc. You just put insert your¢name, and the program then prints out¢a very nice THANK YOU note.¢¢Continuing, he also demonstrated BOOT¢DIRECTORY. A great program that shows¢your disk directory upon disk start up¢time. It works with DOS 2.0 or 2.5¢types. It writes a short machine¢language routine into sector 3 and¢modifies your DOS to show the¢directory automatically without¢disturbing the DOS, or using memory.¢It is a terrific program that should¢be on all your DOS 2 disks.¢¢We then saw a program to make¢CHRISTMAS WRAPPING PAPER on your¢printer. You better get this one soon!¢It is a good program.¢¢We next saw a French Disk. It had the¢title screens of various commercial¢programs run as a continues picture¢display. It has a very neat loader¢that you could use with any other¢program.¢¢We saw "POKEY NEWSLETTER, #1". It was¢their 1st newsletter. A very nice job.¢Congratulations! We would hope more 8¢BIT clubs would follow suit and make¢DISK NEWSLETTERS! ¢¢After all the above demos, ALEX said¢that these programs are all going into¢our library, so look for them.¢¢After coffee and cake, HAROLD PEGLER¢then stepped up and demoed a PAGE 6¢program called HEALTHY EATING. It¢shows you various menues etc. It is¢completely documented. It is a double¢sided disk.¢¢HAROLD also demonstrated a calculator¢program and an investment program. It¢comes from an English user group. It¢also has an electronic circuit¢program. Nice work! The other side is¢from Poland and it is called LOGOS¢MAKER. It allows you to insert¢graphics into a text file or¢wordprocessing file. It is fully¢documented. A great program to get. It¢will be #150 in the library. Both¢disks were sent to us by our ENGLISH¢member JIM CUTLER.¢¢RON FETZER then did a great¢presentation on ARRAYS and MATRIX. He¢demonstrated how an array is assembled¢by showing how different invoices can¢all be stored in a single array. If¢you are going to do any sorting you¢must be able to write an array. RON¢demonstrated a two dimensional array¢or a matrix. He used a bowling team¢and their bowling scores, as examples.¢A matrix is used when the information¢position is important, such as the 2nd¢game is 250 etc. RON gave a short¢brochure to each member on arrays and¢matrix. The presentation was much¢enjoyed by the club, and up to his¢usual high standards.¢¢DOOR PRIZES:¢¢1ST PRIZE MICHAEL BRYANT. 2ND PRIZE¢ALAN SHARKIS. 3D PRIZE JOE LEBER. 4TH¢PRIZE RON FETZER. 5TH PRIZE JACK¢GEDALIUS. 6TH PRIZE STAN SCHENFELD.¢7TH PRIZE HAROLD PEGLER. What, HARRY¢TUTHILL's number didn't come up???¢Sorry Harry you got lucked out - and¢it was legitimate this time. We ran¢the program 3 times and HARRY'S number¢came out last the first two times out¢of 3 times. The gods were against you¢HARRY!¢¢We would like to thank HARRY TUTHILL¢for the fine coffee and HAROLD PEGLER¢for the great cake. Without this we¢could not function through a five hour¢meeting!¢¢This was, without a doubt, a very¢instructive meeting, enjoyed by all,¢and we went 1/2 hour overtime.¢¢Submitted by:¢¢ Ron Fetzer¢¢>>>>>>>>>>>>>>END<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<¢¢ ¢
