It must have taken JIM¢ a great deal of time to prepare the¢ presentation and the OL' HACKERS¢ appreciate it. The club gave him a¢ standing ovation.Five of our members¢ attended the Long Island Atari Users¢ Group meeting, and enjoyed it!¢¢ MORE BBS NEWS:¢¢ JIM HARRIS, a member and NEW¢ NEST SYSOP, spoke about the new¢ things that are happening with the¢ BBS. The BBS is NOW residing in 53¢ Megs of space with over 1,000¢ program titles to down load. JIM¢ reviewed all of them. This was an¢ increase from about 250 titles when¢ the BBS started. JIM did a truly¢ herculean task with the BBS. The BBS¢ now has 22 public file sigs. JIM had¢ to completely reorganize the whole¢ BBS. He estimated it took him 300¢ hours to reorganize the BBS.¢ The NEW NEST BBS (516 234-4943)¢ now has an international network in¢ place. It goes to HOLLAND and¢ GERMANY. BERNARD COCK from Amsterdam¢ Holland is the SYSOP of the HOLLAND¢ connection of the network. The¢ network now consists of the BCOE BBS¢ in Holland, the ABBUC BBS in¢ Germany, WOLFGANG BURGER, SYSOP, and¢ the NEW NEST BBS, JIM HARRIS, SYSOP¢ in Central Islip. We are also¢ networking the INTERNATIONAL NETWORK¢ with JOHN MURDOWSKI in PA. This is a¢ separate network. We are also¢ networking with the NEAR*US base.¢ The international network with¢ HOLLAND and GERMANY is a closed¢ loop. NEW NEST networks with¢ Holland. Holland networks with¢ Germany. Germany networks with us.¢ Thus the loop is complete. The NEW¢ NEST BBS is the HOST NODE for¢ contacting the USA for the¢ Europeans. The PRO SUPPORT BOARD in¢ UTAH is going to join this network.¢ In Canada the BLUE'S BROTHERS BBS¢ wants to join. If this keeps up,¢ this will soon be one of the biggest¢ national and international BBS' in¢ the country.¢ The policies of the BBS are in¢ place to provide some structure and¢ consistancy said JIM. Every user is¢ voice validated. No new handles on¢ the board. The download ratio is 5¢ to 1. JIM said that the BBS in large¢ measure has been funded by LIUG. He¢ thanked us for our past support of¢ the BBS.¢ ALEX recommended that we discuss and¢ at a future meeting, the OL' HACKERS¢ take a vote at a meeting on how much¢ we can support the BBS.¢¢ DEMOES:¢¢ RON distributed copies of a¢ COMMAND SUMMARY for the ATARI LIGHT¢ PEN. The light pen does not work if¢ there is static electricity on the¢ screen. HINT!!!. A PERMANENT FIX!¢ Strip off the insulation on some¢ stranded copper wire. Untwist the¢ wire and spread it out. Scotch tap¢ it to the bottom of the screen. On¢ the other end of the wire attach it¢ to some GROUND (Outlet box screw¢ etc). This is the permanent¢ solution. Temporary solution. Clean¢ the screen with WINDEX.¢ RON distributed a COMMAND¢ SUMMARY for DAISY DOT III to the¢ members. DAISY DOT III comes in two¢ versions. The COMMERCIAL¢ VERSION($25.00) and the shareware¢ version. The essential difference is¢ that with the commercial version you¢ can use an unlimited number of fonts¢ in your document and you get a¢ printed manual and two DAISY DOT III¢ font disks. In the shareware version¢ you can only use ONE font in your¢ document. (Library #94). The great¢ thing about DAISY DOT III is that¢ you DO NOT have to print your¢ document to disk as before with¢ version II. Version III reads your¢ wordprocessing files directly. In¢ your wordprocessing files you use¢ ONLY DDIII commands. You DO NOT use¢ any of the regular word processing¢ commands. It works with all word¢ processors. BUY IT, ITS GREAT!¢ ADVANCED DESKTOP PUBLISHING¢ was demoed by RON. You need two¢ programs. The 1st XLEnt Word¢ Processor and DAISY DOT III. RON¢ distributed a two page DESKTOP¢ SAMPLE done with 1ST XLEnt word¢ processor and DAISY DOT III. The¢ text wraps around the pictures. You¢ can have a large letter starting¢ each paragraph etc. You can produce¢ a document as good looking as with¢ ANY computer regardless of price.¢ You just have to do it once or twice¢ to get experience.¢ ALEX demoed a program from¢ ENGLAND called OIL DRILLING. It is a¢ fantastic program with remarkable¢ graphics that shows the details of¢ an oil drilling process and the¢ refining process.¢ ALEX demoed another modified ¢ GUESS THE NUMBER GAME. Very nice. A¢ whole disk of games for the LIBRARY.¢ It will be disk #186 in the library.¢ This is for you game freaks.¢¢ DOOR PRIZES:¢¢ HAROLD PEGLER¢ RON FETZER¢ BOB ULSCHMID¢ AL ATKINS¢ HARRY TUTHILL¢ ANN RAWLINSON¢ ¢ HARDWARE:¢ ¢ HAROLD PEGLER showed us his¢ modified XF551 DISK DRIVE with a 3.5¢ drive on top. It was modified by BOB¢ PUFF CSS COMPANY. They do the¢ modification FREE for you if you buy¢ their product. The 3.5 is a double¢ sided double density disk with 720K¢ capacity. It automatically becomes¢ the next drive in your system,¢ either D2 or D3 etc. The XF551 still¢ works normally. You can copy between¢ those 2 drives if you want to. The¢ XF551 is a standard IBM drive¢ mechanism on the inside and you can¢ replace with any 360K drive¢ mechanism from IBM. With this¢ upgrade you can use SPARTA DOS,¢ MYDOS and SMARTDOS. This¢ modification costs $135.00. You also¢ get MYDOS 4.50 with this upgrade.¢ You also get a program to read IBM¢ or ST DATA DISKS.
