*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*¢(Editor-This is the second NEWSLETTER¢REVIEW article on this months OHAUG¢newsletter, in an effort to keep you¢well informed as to other ATARI club¢newsletters, and ATARI info. A.P.)¢¢*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*¢¢ NEWSLETTER REVIEWS¢ by Alan Sharkis¢ OHAUG Newsletter Librarian¢¢I've been given quite a stack of¢newsletters to summarize and review¢this time! Many have no reference to¢things 8-bit but there's always hope.¢The others are summarized here:¢¢MVACE News for September 1994 --¢ There is a reprint of ROWLAND¢GRANT's (GCACE) Atari 8-bit Affairs¢column, previously reviewed by me.¢¢Update Atari (HACE) for September¢1994 -- GEORGE IKEN writes a MIDI¢Glossary which is complete and¢accurate.¢I.M.A.G.E. for September 1994 -- ED¢E. SUTTON writes a column about¢software solutions to the problem of¢transferring text files written on an¢Atari 8-bit to MS-DOS computers.¢¢The S.A.G.E. Scroll for September¢1994 -- DAREK MIHOKA's "History of¢Atari Emulation on the PC", reprinted¢from a file that's usually included¢with PC XFormer 2.0 and 2.5, is¢reprinted.¢¢XIO3 (GCACE) for September 1994 --¢ JOHN PICKEN gives us instructions on¢how to use a deskjet to print text¢from an Atari 8-bit. John advises¢that graphics be done on an old 9-pin¢dot-matrix printer. John also writes¢a review of TextPRO 5.20. The most¢exciting thing about this new version¢of the popular shareware word¢processor are "add-ins" -- machine-¢language modules that load into the¢macro buffer and perform specialized,¢customized functions. John's example¢is particularly attractive to me. It¢converts ^M-^J (standard ASCII¢carriage-return and line-feed¢characters) to ATASCII 155 in one¢global find-and-replace operation. ¢ROWLAND GRANT's description of the¢GCACE meetings is interesting, if you¢happen to remember the educational¢software that Atari produced on¢cassette and which needed a master¢cartridge. Rowland also mentions¢recent announcements in his Atari 8-¢bit Affairs column, some of which¢have come to fruition. These¢announcements come from Mike Hohman¢of FTe and from Atari Classics.¢¢Nybbles and Bytes (NWPAC) for¢September/October 1994 -- The issue¢sports a Garfield and Odie cartoon on¢its front cover. The file was¢originally a .GIF, and it was¢converted to Atari format by a¢program called J-View and printed on¢a Star NX-1000 using Billboard¢software. DALE WOOSTER writes an¢update, much more complete than JOHN¢PICKEN's (see above), on TextPRO¢5.20. Apparently, Dale is involved¢in writing the documentation for this¢program, and gives instructions for¢ordering the manual from him. ¢CHARLES COLE, a member of OHAUG, has¢recently joined NWPAC, and has given¢them permission to reprint his¢article on using 24-pin printers with¢the Atari 8-bits. He mentions the¢fact that there are laser printers on¢the market that will emulate an Epson¢FX-80 and will therefore work better¢with our Ataris than many of the 24-¢pin dot matrix printers and ink-jet¢printers. There is also a review (no¢author listed) of The Last Guardian,¢a game for our 8-bits that was¢released in 1992 and is no longer¢available. JOHN COLLINS writes an¢article on how to ship equipment¢safely.¢¢SLCC Journal for October 1994 -- KEN¢WICKERT's (ACE of Syracuse) article¢on 8-bit disk copying, together with¢TOM ANDREWS' updates, as originally¢printed in the ACE of Syracuse¢Newsletter and later in the OHAUG¢newsletter, is reprinted again here. ¢It's popularity is obvious!¢¢The PACESetter for October 1994 --¢ KATHY SEVERANCE, in her Beginner's¢Corner, talks about using passwords¢that are hard to hack. It's a¢worthwhile article for anyone who¢routinely gets on line. The usual¢assortment of seasonal (this is the¢Halloween issue) puzzles, riddles and¢games is included and challenging, as¢always.¢¢Update Atari (HACE) for January 1995¢-- GEORGE IKEN writes the third in¢his series on DOSs for the Atari 8-¢bit. This time he covers SpartaDos¢and SpartaDos X. His description is¢general, but clear. It will enable¢the new user who is considering using¢a version of SpartaDos to decide if¢SpartaDos is a good choice.¢¢MVACE NEws for January 1995 -- Once¢again, ROWLAND GRANT's Atari 8-bit¢Affairs from XIO3 is reprinted. You¢should read it, its full of news and¢rumors regarding the ATARI world!¢¢(FR)ANTIC (AAAUA) for September 1994¢-- RUSSELL STOWE's Back to BASIC¢column gives us a short listing of¢Atari BASIC keywords and a type-in¢Musical Keyboard program. JAMES¢MARTIN's article, "Death of a¢Computer?", is not only worth¢reading, but worth your reply, if¢you're so inclined. SPACE COWBOY's¢BBS Connections column reprints RICK¢REASER's list of BBSs that carry the¢FidoNet Atari National Echo, along¢with their node numbers. Two are¢relatively local to us, one in The¢Bronx and one in Seaford. Both run¢on IBMs, but the sysops are old 8-bit¢hands who continue to make the echo¢available to us 8-bitters. (If you¢need the phone numbers of either of¢the two, just ask me -- A.S.)¢¢(FR)ANTIC (AAAUA) for November 1993 -¢(Ed. How did this old timer get skip-¢over in the past?)¢New BASIC type-in program appears in¢RUSSELL STOWE's President's Corner¢column. It displays multiplication¢tables for practice. MANUEL GARCIA¢writes about sources of stationery¢and supplies that can be used with¢The Print Shop and similar programs. ¢The Back To Basic column gives simple¢directions on setting up 8-bit¢systems.¢¢*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*¢
