  1. ¢JAGUAR GAMEOLOGY (continued)¢¢    One player pinball games Ruiner and Pinball Fantasies are also on the way and so is BattleChess CD.  Realistic and challenging gameplay is anticipated and with any luck we'll see some 64-bit graphics rather than those resulting from a straight forward 16-bit conversion.¢¢    The smash hit ex-Lynx game Blue Lightning, that's to be packaged off with the CD-ROM drive, has been re-designed with extra-detailed bit-mapped and shaded 3D levels and enemies.  Excellent guitar soundtracks play as you attack in your choice of eight different UN military planes.  In-game and intro screen graphics look fantastic and magazines have talked extremely positively about this game.  Expected along with the drive.¢¢    PC smash Wing Commander III is due for release in September as is The Need for Speed from the 3DO.¢¢    Battlesphere (like Wing Commander) is released soon, and vertical shoot'em'up Zzyorxx looks very promising.¢¢    Joining the Jaguar's current and rather standard shoot'em'ups is a real winner called Soul Star.  Expected soon on CD, this huge 'behind-the-player' style blast was a real winner on the Sega Mega CD thanks to CORE Design.  It features fully rendered landscapes, fast sprite scaling and fantastic animation, masses of enemies, powerful weapons, fiendish gamplay, CD quality sound & FX and a choice of either a ship, an ED209 style robot or a bladeless chopper.  An FMV intro-sequence starts the game off.  Soul Star is the first of many new titles for the Jaguar from CORE Design.  This is sure to be one of the first CD games that will go into my collection.¢¢    Phear is one of the first puzzle games for the Jaguar, featuring thousands of colours and fiendishly challenging puzzles.  Expected in June.¢¢    Alien vs Predator is making a comeback.  A CD version with major improvements will be available, and Alien vs Predator II (September), also on CD, will allow a multi-play option.  I hope there will be an improvement in level design, more weapons and some FMV, especially in AvPII.¢¢    Other titles currently in production include:¢¢Battle Wheels     CART  - TBC¢Conan the Warrior CART  - Sept 95¢Casino Royale     CART  - June 95¢Dungeon Depth     CART  - TBC¢Flip Out          CART  - June 95¢Hammer Head       CART  - Sept 95¢Iron Soldier II   CART  - Sept 95¢James Pond 3      CART  - TBC¢Mutant Penguins   CART  - Sept 95¢Powerdrive        CART  - June 95¢The Bug           CART  - Sept 95¢Veruna Forces     CART  - Sept 95¢Zodiac Fighters   CART  - TBC¢Baldy             CD    - June 95¢Thunderhawk       CD    - Sept 95¢Vid Grid          CD    - Sept 95¢¢¢No more Green Women!¢¢    The sequel to the disappointing Cybermorph, called Battlemorph, is said to be much faster, more combat orientated and more varied than it's predecessor.  The new CD format, as opposed to the original cart, gives better sound effects and music, bit-mapped detail as well as the texture mapping on the landscape.  An excellently rendered FMV animated intro-screen really looks outstanding.¢¢    Battlemorph, unlike it's predecessor allows you to go underground and into the sea as your ship changes shape from craft to other vechicles. ¢¢    Some genius finally saw fit to replace the bald green woman and her awful voice that players had to endure in Cybermorph with a hologram robot.  Sounds great!  Expected in September.¢¢¢Look... no MPEG!¢¢    The initial software only driven CD FMV DEMO was received with great excitment by magazines, who said it was one of the best they had seen.  That's even without the MPEG FMV cartridge installed!¢¢¢Atari Deals¢¢    Acclaim Entertainment are reported to be making a 3-piece combo deal with Atari for a Jaguar package.  149 pounds will apparently include the Jaguar with NBA Jam Tournament Edition, Frank Thomas 'Big Hurt' Baseball and a third, most likely the film tie-in Batman Forever.  We can only hope that this isn't hearsay!¢¢    Atari are working on bringing the current Jaguar price down to an amazing 99 pounds.  This is because they are working on the Jaguar and CD-ROM combo for 199 pounds, the CD/Jaguar all in one for 299 pounds, as mentioned, and are currently working on higher specification Jaguar 3 and 4 models.¢¢    My first reaction to the news of yet more Jaguar models was deep concern that Atari wasn't concentrating enough on bringing out new games.  The thought of already pouring money into new models when the games situation is so dodgy and the CD drive isn't yet established sounds a little too premature and complacent of Atari.¢¢    However, Atari are owed a lot of money from court cases over copyright infringements and have the $90 million Sega deal, so they have the money to finance their projects.  Let's hope they invest it wisely!¢¢    Of the new releases, I am certainly looking foward to Ultra Vortex, Primal Rage, Mortal Kombat III, Wing Commander III, Highlander and Magic Carpet.¢¢¢CDs or bust!¢¢    Let's hope that new releases are of the highest quality and their price tag is sensible and relative to the game and format itself; notibly with carts, but especially with CDs.  Promotion and full support of the CD-drive side of the Jaguar is essential if Atari are to stay in the picture!¢¢    As one Jaguar owner mentioned, Sega has Sonic and are soon to reveal a new star, while Nintendo have Kong and Mario.  Perhaps a character for a series of Jaguar (CD) games wouldn't be such a bad idea.  It may help to establish Atari among the other console giants and the public.¢¢    In addition, more big titles like the Star Wars series and more film tie-ins would also help boost the Jaguar indefinitely.¢¢    Sony, Sega and Panasonic have already caught the public's attention with great looking next generation games.  Even the Ultra 64 has got everyone eagerly awaiting it's 1996 release.¢¢    If Atari can do the same with some really gorgeous-looking and varied styles of games, pushing the CD-ROM side more than the carts, then a lot of already anxious Jaguar owners won't have wasted their money.  It's all about building up a reputation for themselves and a confidence among third party developers.¢¢¢Doomed?  I don't think so!¢¢    Good news is that just recently a DOOM Jaguar package has been put on sale at around 179 pounds.  Atari have also started to advertise reguarly in a number of popular games magazines and Silica have been pushing wildly with various pamphlets.  These are two good moves, in addition to the great value-for-money CD-ROM drive, that are sure to boost Jaguar sales and reputation.¢¢    I am looking foward to learning more about this new all-in-one Jaguar.  Apparently it's far more sexy than the often titled 'toilet seat' design of the current version.  I will say that I think the current model is still perfectly acceptable and quite attractive (I haven't got a THING(!) for consoles by the way!).¢¢    Early pictures show the new model to be a cross between a hi-tech record player, the front view of a grey and black flat-screened TV on it's back, and a flat console with red buttons!  Not a toilet seat in sight!  Whatever it looks like, take it from me, it's streamlined & sexy!¢¢    An autumn release would be advisable rather than the end of the year, coinciding with the Playstation and Saturn releases.  This would give the Jaguar more recognition in the market alongside other consoles.¢¢    If Atari put their licensing deal with Sega into action we may see games like Daytona USA and Virtua Fighter II on the Jaguar by the end of 1995.¢¢    Having said that I would prefer to see titles unique to the Jaguar and it's specifications, since I am a little weary of conversions.  Well, with Atari's history, can you blame me?¢¢Until next time...¢¢Dan ODI B.¢
