  6.  1) Select all files by clicking on the first file in the file list and
  7.     dragging the mouse to the end of the file list.  You can also create a
  8.     catalog of any combination of files.  You can hold down the <Shift> key
  9.     while using the mouse to add and subtract files from being selected.
  10.     Also, if no files are selected, GDS will catalog every file.
  11.  
  12.  2) Next, select "Create Catalog" from the "View" menu.  Use the "up" and
  13.     "down" arrow keys to increase or decrease the number of thumbnails
  14.     displayed on the screen.
  15.  
  16.  3) Make sure the "Borders" and "Labels" options are set as you want them.
  17.     Type "L" and "B" to change them, or use the mouse and click on the
  18.     "Labels" and "Borders" buttons.
  19.  
  20.  4) Press <Enter─┘> to start generating the first screen.
  21.  
  22.  5) When each screen is done, press <Alt-W> to write the screen out as a GDS
  23.     catalog GIF file.  GDS names the files sequentially like GDS000.GIF,
  24.     GDS001.GIF, GDS002.GIF, unless you've used the "/N<name>" command line
  25.     option (see "COMMAND LINE OPTIONS" below.)
  26.  
  27.  6) You can print the catalog image by pressing 'P' at the prompt after each
  28.     catalog screen is completed.  If you do, GDS prints the catalog image and
  29.     then returns you to the prompt again, in case you want to save the file or
  30.     exit.  GDS printouts support Hewlett Packard LaserJet II, 3, 4 and
  31.     compatible printers (also see the /#LPT2: command line option for printer
  32.     configuration information; the printer must be configured properly).

  34.  7) You're done.  When you look at the GIF files, you will be able to click on
  35.     a picture and see the original as long as the original file is in the
  36.     current file list (if it's in the same directory; it usually is).  You can
  37.     also use <PgUp> and <PgDn> to move through multiple screen catalogs while
  38.     viewing the catalogs.

  41. HELPFUL HINTS
  42. Some users like to generate catalogs with a black background, rather than a
  43. white one.  White backgrounds are the default mode for GDS, and are great for
  44. printing catalogs.  If you do need to use a black background, you can toggle
  45. the "White Catalog Backgnd" option in the "View" menu.
  46.  
  47. If you have to catalog a large number of images, you can use the /W<n> command
  48. line option to tell GDS to automatically write catalog images.  Here's how it
  49. works:
  50.  
  51.   1) Start GDS with the /W<n> option.  The "<n>" is the first file number, for
  52.      example, /W4 would write the first catalog as GDS004.GIF.
  53.  
  54.   2) Use GDS to create the first catalog screen (as described at the top of
  55.      this document).
  56.  
  57.   3) When GDS is done creating the catalog, type <Alt-W> to write the image as
  58.      a GIF file and continue making catalog screens.  From this point on, GDS
  59.      will automatically write successive catalog screens to GIF files.
  60.  
  61. This process can also be automated from the command line, by using the /P
  62. option.  Just specify the path/file specification of the files to be cataloged
  63. and include the /P<n> and /W<n> options.  The "/P" option sets the number
  64. thumbnail tiles across for the catalog screens.  For example, /P4 would
  65. create catalog screens with four thumbnails across, and probably four high.

  67. If you create catalogs from the DOS prompt, you can control the labelling,
  68. borders, and background color as well:
  69.  
  70.     /L0  - Disable thumbnail labels (/L1 enables them)
  71.     /U0  - Disable thumbnail borders (/U1 enables them)
  72.     /~A0 - Use black background for catalog screens (/~A1 uses white)
