  26. 1. General Notes
  27. ================
  28.   IMPORTANT!
  29.   You must IMPERATIVELY read this README file and all the documentation
  30.   supplied BEFORE you continue the installation!
  31.   Otherwise SPEA cannot accept any responsibility for claims that may be
  32.   caused as a consequence.
  33.  
  34.   Please be aware that you can only take full advantage of the
  35.   features provided by the MIRAGE VIDEO TV, if the other components of
  36.   your system, especially the graphic monitor that is being used,
  37.   also comply with the specifications of the MIRAGE VIDEO TV.
  38.   (Example : The resolution 1280x1024 that is supported by the
  39.   MIRAGE VIDEO TV can obviously not be used with a monitor that is
  40.   specified to only support resolutions up to 1024x768).

  42. 1.1  Supported TV Systems
  43. -------------------------
  44.   This board supports only the PAL B/G TV system, which is used e.g. in 
  45.   Germany.
  46.

  48. 2. Installation
  49. ===============
  50.  
  51.   SPEA offers the MIRAGE VIDEO TV with and without a MPEG hardware
  52.   module. The installation detects automaticly the module and
  53.   uses the right installation.
  54.  
  55.   The program calls stated below refer to the installation from the
  56.   SPEA installation disks and the SPEA Media Gallery CD ('MG-CD'). 
  57.   If you have only floppies in the box, the software at the floppies 
  58.   will be newer as the current CD.
  59.  
  60. 2.1 Installation under DOS
  61. ==========================
  62. Note:
  63.   Before you start the installation you should know where (drive and 
  64.   directory) your applications are installed for which you wish to
  65.   install driver software.
  66.  
  67.   Start the installation from
  68.   a) Disk with               b) MG-CD with
  69.      A:\                        <CD drive>:
  70.      INSTALL                    SPEAINST
  71.  
  72.   After the installation it will normally be necessary to reconfigure
  73.   your applications for the new driver software. The steps necessary
  74.   to achieve this are described in the manuals.
  75.  
  76.   VESA Modes:
  77.   -----------
  78.   VESA mode support is integrated in the BIOS of the MIRAGE VIDEO TV.
  79.  
  80. 2.2 Installation under Windows / Windows 95
  81. ===========================================
  82.   Note: The install program detects your operatin system and installs
  83.   the correct drivers. 
  84.   
  85.   Select the menu items 'File' and then 'Run' in the Windows Program
  86.   Manager. Then enter:
  87.  
  88.   a) (Disk)                  b) (MG-CD)(not for this release!)
  89.      A:\SETUP                   <CD drive>:SPEAINST
  90.  
  91. Note:
  92.   If you intend to use the DOS programs SPTUNE, MX2TEST and S3TEST under
  93.   Windows 95 then you must do this via the Explorer ('Start', 'Run')
  94.   using the path C:\SPEA\GDC\SPTUNE for example, and NOT via a DOS
  95.   box.
  96.  
  97.   Windows 95 and problems while playing Video-CD or CDI
  98.   -----------------------------------------------------
  99.   Our MPEG playback MCI driver uses the WIN95 driver for the CD-ROM 
  100.   drive. If Win95 doesn't support your CDROM controller not rigth (if
  101.   you use a CDROM drive at a IDE port, you are using the Win95 controller
  102.   driver for the IDE controller), there are 2 workarounds:
  103.   - Using the DOS-realmode driver
  104.   Install the CDROM driver in the Config.sys and \WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE
  105.   in autoexec.bat. Additional it could be possible to disable the 32 bit
  106.   mode for the drives.
  107.   - Using an other IDE controller
  108.   Use an other, secondary, IDE controller (normally address 170, IRQ 15
  109.   or 10), supported by Win95. If you use your CD-ROM at this port, the 
  110.   problem should be solved. 
  111.   (Only possible if your motherboard uses only one IDE controller, normally 
  112.   address 1F0, IRQ 14). 
  113.   You can use a second IDE port at newer soundboards with IDE port (no 
  114.   soundboards with CD-ROM CDROM interfaces for special xxx-drives) or a
  115.   simple ISA IDE controller. 
  116.   
  117. 2.3 Installation under OS/2 Warp
  118. ================================
  119.   The Driver for OS/2 are not a part of the floppy release. Please get the
  120.   from our CD-ROM or turn to the SPEA Mailbox.
  121.  
  122.   To install other drivers and tools z.B. for Win-OS/2, start Win-OS/2 
  123.   and continue as described in section 2.2
  124.  
  125. 2.4 Installing the Windows NT 3.5x Driver
  126. -----------------------------------------
  127.   The Driver for NT are not a part of the floppy release. Please get the
  128.   from our CD-ROM or turn to the SPEA Mailbox.

  131. 3.  Choosing a Monitor
  132. ======================
  133.  
  134.   As mentioned above, the graphics monitor you choose to use with
  135.   your board should be technically suitable for use with your
  136.   MIRAGE VIDEO TV board in order to be able fully utilize this.
  137.  
  138.   The display refresh rate for graphical user interface operating
  139.   systems (Windows [95], OS/2 and Windows NT) is selected using
  140.   the corresponding program V7SETUP, V7SETOS2 and V7SETNT.
  141.  
  142.   Extended tuning (with display image positioning) and the selection
  143.   of the display refresh rate for DOS programs such as AutoCAD for 
  144.   DOS, is made with the program SPEAtune (SPTUNE).
  145.  
  146. Note:
  147.   SPTUNE is exclusively programmed for use under DOS.
  148.   
  149.                  *** IMPORTANT ***
  150.  
  151.   Only use settings that your monitor supports. If you use the monitor
  152.   outside the specified ratings then it may suffer permanent damage!
  153.   If you change the monitor then you must compare the ratings first
  154.   and should reconfigure with SPTUNE accordingly!
  155.  
  156.  
  157. 4.  Known Restrictions
  158. ======================
  159.  
  160.   (1) It is generally not possible to use more than one active VGA
  161.   board simultaneously in a PC.
  162.   If your PC has a VGA adapter on the motherboard and you wish to use
  163.   the MIRAGE VIDEO TV, then you must deactivate the VGA adapter in the
  164.   PC first.
  165.   
  166.  (2) MPEG playback with the hardware MPEG-Module
  167.   - If you installed first the XING player and after that the MPEG 
  168.   Modul, the link between the mpg extension and the XING Player still 
  169.   exist. With a mouse double click at a *.mpg file the XING player 
  170.   will be started with a error massage. This problem don't exist while
  171.   playing a MPEG file with the SPEA MEDIASTATION or the Windows media
  172.   player. Will be fixed in the next release.
  173.   - With SPTUNE stored monitor modes can't be used with WINTUNE.
  174.   Will be fixed in the next release.
  175.   - Capturing a single frame is possible (right mouse button in 'monitor')
  176.   capturing a sequence could not be released up to now. 
  177.   (3) A Software MPEG Decoder for WIN95, supporting DIRECT DRAW will be
  178.   available soon via BBS /Compuserve. (The WIN95 driver are already
  179.   supporting DirectDRAW.)

  181. 5.  Notes on Applications
  182. =========================
  183.  
  184.   Seperate README files exist for the applications supported by the
  185.   MIRAGE VIDEO TV. These contain information on last-minute changes
  186.   that could not be included in the manual. They also contain 
  187.   information concerning known restrictions.
  188.   The README files are also copied to the \SPEA\GDC directory during 
  189.   the software installation when you select a driver. The files have
  190.   the extension .DOC.
  191.   You can view the respective README files by entering SHOW *.DOC.

  193.   Example:

  198. 5.1. Mirage Video /TV together with the SPEA Crunch It
  199. ------------------------------------------------------
  200.   If you want to play a MPEG file, while you have installed the SPEA 
  201.   Crunch It via the SPEA MoviBus, it may happen, that your system crashes. 
  202.   This may happen only with the MPEG Module hardware revision R10 
  203.   (indicated at the back side of the MPEG Module). 
  204.   If you have the revision R10A02, R11... or higher, this problem could 
  205.   not occur.
  206.   If this problem occures on your PC, please call our dept. System and 
  207.   Service to get a new MPEG Module.
  208.  
  209. 5.2. SPEA VIDEOTEXT
  210. -------------------
  211.   A new, 32 bit Videotext program, supporting all advantages of Windows(R)95
  212.   will be released in spring 1996 at Compuserve (GO SPEA) and our BBS.

  214.  
  215. 6.  Corrections to the Manual
  216. =============================
  217.  
  218.   MIRAGE VIDEO TV  and SPEA Ergonomic Modes up to 100 Hz:
  219.   -------------------------------------------------------
  220.   The BIOS of your MIRAGE VIDEO TV supports all available resolutions
  221.   up to a frequency of 75 Hz. An additional software solution (SPTUNE)
  222.   also makes refresh rates up to 100 Hz possible. An overview of the
  223.   frequencies available can be found in the file BIOS.TXT.
  224.   Important: the SPEA ergonomic modes with frequencies over 75 Hz are
  225.   only active if the program 'V7HFREQ' has been called with the parameter
  226.   't' (Windows 95: V7HFREQ tw). For this reason, a corresponding call 
  227.   is placed in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file during the installation.
  228.  
  229.   S3TEST:
  230.   -------
  231.   S3TEST is a program provided to test your graphics board for errors. It
  232.   check whether the board is correctly functioning together with your PC.
  233.   During the testing phase (which can take a few seconds), a number of
  234.   different color patterns will be displayed on your monitor (these are
  235.   different according to the board being tested). The patterns created 
  236.   are the result of technical tests and do NOT represent an error on
  237.   your board. An accurate result is shown at the end of the test routine.
  238.  
  239.   TVTEST:
  240.   -------
  241.   This program tests the Video In connectors, the TV and the teletext part 
  242.   of this board. If you have no signal connected to the 2 Video In connectors, 
  243.   you will get an ERROR message.
