  1. & Introduction to Unicom 3.1
  2. UNICOM is a complete and easy to use data communications 
  3. package especially designed for users of the Microsoft 
  4. Windows 3.1 operating environment.  
  5.  
  6. Many common communication tasks can be fully automated 
  7. such as dialing the host computer, uploading and downloading 
  8. multiple files.  An advanced script language is provided to
  9. allow automation of your own specialized communication tasks.
  10.  
  11. In addition, all program features have been designed for 
  12. background operation.  That is, you can instruct Unicom to
  13. perform a task then switch to another application while Unicom
  14. does it's job.
  15.  
  16. Built-in are many advanced features only found in software
  17. costing hundreds of dollars more.
  18.   
  19. Some of the many features include in Unicom are: 
  20.  
  21. MANY POPULAR FILE TRANSFER PROTOCOLS:
  22.  
  23. X-Y-ZModem , Ymodem Batch, Ymodem-G, ZModem Resume, Kermit,
  24. CompuServe B, QuickB and ASCII.  Of these, CompuServe and
  25. Zmodem protocols have been implemented for 
  26. automatic uploading and  automatic downloading.  Zmodem will
  27. now automatically resume an aborted transfer on the next 
  28. attempt.  External protocols are now supported. 
  29.  
  30. 16 COLOR TERMINAL EMULATION WITH SPECIAL ATTRIBUTE SUPPORT.
  31.  
  32. Emulations include: DEC VT102 (ANSI), DEC VT52, ANSI-BBS and
  33. TTY.  Screen fonts, colors and attributes are user 
  34. selectable.  All your installed Windows fonts are readily 
  35. available for use.
  36.  
  37. AUTO-SENSE 256 COLOR GIF GRAPHICS VIEWER:
  38.  
  39. GIF graphic images are displayed automatically during 
  40. downloading.  Images containing up to 256 simultaneous
  41. colors can be viewed (if your video hardware & driver are
  42. capable).  Support is provided for receiving CompuServe 
  43. interactive GIF images like weather maps and satellite 
  44. pictures.  On CompuServe, type GO MAPS .
  45.  
  46. BATCH DIALING DIRECTORY will hold an unlimited number 
  47. of entries, maintain statistics, program settings and a
  48. dialing string for each entry.  A directory editor is
  49. provided for maintaining the directory.  Other than disk
  50. space, there is no limit to the size of your directory 
  51. or the number of directories you may have.  
  52.  
  53. HOST MODE allows remote users access to your computer 
  54. similar to that of a computer bulletin board. Each user
  55. is assigned an ID and Password.  A remote user may upload
  56. and download files, examine directories, change directories,
  57. type files, page the sysop, read messages, write messages,
  58. view the user list or shell to DOS.   These capabilities 
  59. are enabled or disabled for each user by the host sysop. 
  60. The sysop may monitor interaction, log events, operate in
  61. dial-back mode and chat with a remote user.
  62.  
  63. MODEM DISPLAY LIGHTS have been integrated in to the top
  64. of the Unicom display.  These are the same lights built-in
  65. to the more advanced external modems.   These indicators
  66. give you a visual clue to the physical state of your 
  67. communications link.  
  68.  
  69. A SCROLLBACK BUFFER that can hold up to 5000 lines of
  70. information is provided.  The user may examine the
  71. contents of this buffer with the use of the built-in
  72. horizontal and vertical scroll bars.  
  73. The scrollback buffer can be integrated into the window
  74. display or remain hidden until it is needed.
  75.  
  76. WINSCRIPT WINDOWS SCRIPT LANGUAGE. 
  77.  
  78. Programmers may customize Unicom and automate many 
  79. communication tasks.   WinScript is 'C - like' in design
  80. and provides over 200 statementsand commands including
  81. support for conditional program control.  Many  functions
  82. that take advantage of the Windows environment are provided.
  83.  
  84. SCRIPT RECORDING CAPABILITY can be used to create command
  85. files automatically as you interact with a remote host 
  86. computer.
  87.         
  88. SCRIPT SCHEDULING allows up to eight WinScript command
  89. files to be executed at specific days and times.
  90. Programming the scheduler is just like programming your VCR.
  91.  
  92. DDE SERVER CAPABILITY
  93.  
  94. Other Windows applications that support DDE may exchange
  95. information with Unicom using a DDE link.  Unicom can
  96. receive and execute commands from DDE client applications. 
  97. A client application may instruct Unicom to execute a 
  98. specific WinScript file, WinScript command line, hot 
  99. key, macro or external application.  A client application 
  100. can retrieve the contents of script variables or be advised
  101. when they change.
  102.  
  103. DOWNLOAD FILE PROCESSOR
  104.  
  105. Unicom can be setup to watch for incoming files with a 
  106. specific extension then invoke a utility to process the 
  107. file after it is received.  For example, all .ZIP files
  108. can be unzipped by Unicom after downloading.  Each file 
  109. type may be processed automatically or interactively via
  110. a queue control. Any DOS or Windows utility can be setup
  111. to process specific incoming file types.

  113. 16550 UART FIFO TRIGGER CONTROL & I/O PRIORITY CONTROL
  114.  
  115. Unicom allows 16550 users to select the FIFO trigger level. 
  116. An I/O priority control allows the user to control the amount
  117. of processing time Unicom receives during file transfers.   
  118.  
  119. A Convenient SCREEN TOOLBAR provides 3-d icon pushbuttons
  120. that give you quick access to many of UNICOM's menu selected
  121. features.
  122.  
  123. A CUSTOM ICON BAR allows you to add your own icons to the
  124. Unicom display screen.  These icons may be setup to activate
  125. other applications, run scripts, execute macros, hot keys or 
  126. external protocols.
  127.  
  128. EASY SCREEN EDITING. Highlight text on the screen using the
  129. mouse.  You may then copy this selected text to the clipboard, 
  130. erase it, mark as a file or send it back to the host.  A file marker 
  131. feature is built-in to let you highlight filenames off the
  132. screen then transmit them to the host when you are prompted.

  134. EXTERNAL PROTOCOL SUPPORT
  135.  
  136. Unicom is now compatible with most all external protocols. 
  137. Unicom can be configured to  detect specific upload 
  138. and/or download signatures then invoke the protocol.
  139. Any number of external file transfer protocols may be added.
  140.  
  141. INT 14 AND EXTERNAL I/O DRIVER SUPPORT
  142.  
  143. Unicom can be adapted to special I/O hardware.  A user may
  144. develop a special Windows DLL driver to allow Unicom to
  145. communicate with any special device.  An INT 14 driver is
  146. included with Unicom.  This INT-14 driver allows Unicom to 
  147. be used on many networks.

  150. & What's New In Unicom 3.1
  151.  
  152. DDE SERVER SUPPORT:
  153.  
  154. Unicom can now exchange data with other 
  155. Windows applications that support Dynamic Data 
  156. Exchange (DDE).  Unicom operates as a server and can 
  157. receive commands to provide data, run scripts, execute
  158. specific WinScript commands at the request of another 
  159. application supporting DDE.
  160.  
  161.  
  162. MODEM INDICATOR LIGHTS
  163.  
  164. Eleven modem indicator lights and 2 program
  165. indicator lights are integrated into the display.
  166. Internal modem users now have a visual reference
  167. as to the state of the modem.  Common modem indicators
  168. are displayed which include: Receive Data (RD),
  169. Send Data (SD), Carrier Detect(CD), Off Hook (OH),
  170. Auto Answer (AA), Terminal Ready (TR), Modem Ready (MR),
  171. Request to Send (RS), Clear to Send (CS), High Speed (HS)
  172. and Ring Indicator (RI).
  173.  
  174. The two program indicator lights include DDE and FIFO. 
  175. The DDE light is active when Unicom is providing 
  176. services to another Windows application via a 
  177. DDE link.  If Unicom detects a 16550 uart as your active
  178. computer port, the FIFO indicator will light if the port is set
  179. for buffered operations. 
  180.  
  181. AUTOMATIC 256 COLOR GIF GRAPHICS VIEWER
  182.  
  183. Unicom will automatically display GIF files
  184. during downloading using X-Y-Z or CompuServe
  185. protocols.  Images up to 256 colors are supported if your 
  186. video driver and hardware are capable.  This feature is
  187. invoked automatically as Unicom will sense the GIF file
  188. extension.  Also, this feature is activated for on-
  189. line viewing when Unicom receives a CompuServe
  190. interactive terminal command.  
  191.  
  192. The graphic image is displayed in a pop up - sizable
  193. window containing horizontal and vertical scroll bars.  You
  194. may adjust the size of the window and scroll any part of the
  195. incoming image into view.
  196.  
  197. CompuServe color weather maps can now be easily viewed
  198. interactively.  At the CompuServe prompt type: GO MAPS.
  199.  
  200. USERS MAY CUSTOMIZE UNICOM WITH THEIR OWN ICONS
  201.  
  202. Users may add their own custom icons to a scrollable icon
  203. bar. These icons may be defined to activate programs, hot
  204. keys, scripts, external protocols, or keyboard macros. 
  205. There is no limit to the number of icons a user can define. 
  206. If all the icons cannot be displayed, a mini scroll bar
  207. appears to allow the user to scroll through to find the
  208. desired icon.  This feature is in addition to Unicoms 
  209. predefined icon toolbar built-in to the top of the screen.
  210.  
  211. INT 14 SUPPORT VIA DLL DRIVER
  212.  
  213. Unicom comes equipped with a driver that will support
  214. INT-14 networks (including modem sharing).   This driver
  215. supports baud rates up to 9600.  
  216.  
  217. EXTERNAL PROTOCOL SUPPORT    
  218.  
  219. You can add any number of external protocols to Unicom
  220. via a simple setup screen.  Automatic uploading and
  221. downloading are supported.  Just enter the specific upload
  222. and/or download signature sequence.  Unicom will
  223. automatically sense any signature and then initiate the
  224. external protocol automatically.   This will support most all
  225. external protocols including HSLINK.
  226.  
  227. AUTOMATIC ZMODEM UPLOADING VIA DRAG & DROP
  228.  
  229. Drag files from the Windows 3.1 file manager and
  230. drop them on Unicom.  A window appears containing a list
  231. of files waiting to be uploaded.  When you have finished
  232. dropping files onto Unicom, instruct your host computer to 
  233. receive a Zmodem batch upload.   Unicom will
  234. automatically sense when the remote host is ready to
  235. receive the files and begins transmission on its own.
  236.  
  237. DOWNLOAD FILE PROCESSOR
  238.  
  239. This feature allows you to automatically post
  240. process files that have been received.  For example, you
  241. can instruct Unicom to automatically unzip each file 
  242. downloaded with a .ZIP extension after it is received.
  243.  
  244. Two processing methods are supported: Via interactive
  245. queue control or automatic execution after each file is
  246. received.
  247.  
  248. ADVANCED SETUP: 16550 TRIGGER CONTROL & I/O
  249. PRIORITY CONTROL.
  250.  
  251. The Windows 3.1 comm driver supports the 16550
  252. uart device but provides no control of the size of the fifo
  253. trigger.  Microsoft sets the trigger at 14 which can be too
  254. small at the higher baud rates to prevent data overflow.
  255.  
  256. Unicom allows you to set the size of this trigger to all
  257. possible settings.
  258.  
  259. The I/O priority control allows you to tune
  260. Unicom to obtain the fastest possible file transfer
  261. performance from your computer.  
  262.  
  263. NEW SCRIPT COMMANDS
  264.  
  265. These predefined variables allow a script writer to access
  266. the directory fields of the last directory entry dialed.
  267.  
  268. DIRNAME, DIRPHONE, DIRDIALSTRING, DIRBAUD,
  269. DIRSCRIPT, DIRPASSWORD, DIRTERMINAL,
  270. DIRSESSIONS & DIRLASTONDATE
  271.  
  272. AUTOMATIC ZMODEM RESUME FEATURE
  273.  
  274. Zmodem Resume (also called Zmodem crash recovery) was
  275. a manual operation in previous Unicom releases.  Now,
  276. Unicom will automatically compare the file date and size
  277. of an existing file to that of the sender.  If the host file is
  278. larger and of the same date, Unicom will start the transfer
  279. at  the point where the previous attempt left off.
  280.  
  281. FILE MARKER SEND ALL FEATURE
  282.  
  283. The ALL feature transmits all filenames from the file
  284. marker list box (space delimited) then sends a CR.  This
  285. makes it easy to specify all your selected files to a remote
  286. host that prompts you for multiple files.
  287.  
  288. EXTERNAL I/O DRIVER SUPPORT COMPATIBLE
  289. WITH PROCOMM DLC DRIVERS 
  290.  
  291. Unicom can be adapted to support special I/O hardware. 
  292. By developing a Windows DLL according to Procomms
  293. DLC specification, Unicom can be adapted to any special
  294. devices.  The INT-14 driver provided with Unicom 
  295. illustrates this capability.
  296.  
  297. POWER SCROLL FEATURE
  298.  
  299. Unicom can now scroll over 10 times faster than earlier
  300. releases.  Thanks to a new power scroll feature, Unicom
  301. can display incoming text to the screen at any baud rate
  302. without concern as to the performance of your video
  303. hardware.  
  304.  
  305. PREDEFINED MODEM SETUP STRINGS
  306.  
  307. Unicom now provides custom modem setup strings for over 
  308. 100 different modems from various manufacturers.  A
  309. manual modem setup screen is provided for modems we do
  310. not specifically support.
  311.  
  312. RUNNING ON-LINE $ CONNECTION CHARGE METER
  313.  
  314. Unicom will automatically calculate and display your
  315. hourly connection charges while on-line to pay services
  316. every 2 seconds.  Hourly rate information is stored 
  317. in Unicoms dialing directory for each system you define.  
  318.  
  319. PUSH-BUTTON PHONE DIALER   
  320.  
  321.  
  322. A new gee whiz push-button telephone dialer has
  323. been added.  You can just dial the phone with your mouse
  324. or, if you prefer, manually enter the numbers from the
  325. keypad.

  327. OTHER IMPROVEMENTS
  328.  
  329. User Selectable Comm Port Receive and Transmit Buffer
  330. Sizes. You may now specify the size of the interrupt
  331. receive and transmit queues utilized by the Windows
  332. communications driver.  Unicoms comm port setup 
  333. window provides selectable buffer sizes as follows:

  335. Unicom previously used a predefined buffer size -
  336. overriding any system.ini  setting.
  337.  
  338. Receive Buffer    4k, 8k, 16k, 24k
  339. Transmit Buffer    2k, 4k, 8k, 16k
  340.

  342. New ^ Character Prefix 
  343. You may directly specify all 256 ASCII characters by using
  344. the ^ prefix character followed by the decimal number. 
  345. For example to specify a DEL character (255) in the
  346. keyboard macro editor, just enter ^255 in the description
  347. field for the key being defined.

  349.  
  350. Host Mode Improvements
  351. Access levels (1-3) have been replaced by privileges you
  352. specify in the host user setup screen.  In this screen you
  353. establish privileges for each user by selecting 
  354. the appropriate checkbox  for the following operations:
  355.  
  356. Upload File, Download File, Change Directories, Type
  357. Files, List Directories, Shell to DOS, Page Sysop, Read
  358. Messages, Write Messages, Examine the User List
  359. ist.  On-line time limits and Dial back operation settings
  360. are now part of each user setup.
  361.  
  362. Host mode will now detect a loss of modem carrier and
  363. terminate any active modem session.
  364.  
  365. Screen Editing Time Saver
  366. You can highlight a block of text on the screen as always 
  367. then copy or paste it. Now you may click the mouse on a 
  368. word - Unicom will highlight the entire word.  
  369.  
  370. You may paste or send the highlighted text by clicking the
  371. right mouse button. A carriage return will be automatically
  372. appended to the transmitted text.
  373.  
  374. MISC FEATURES AND CHANGES             
  375.        
  376.   ~ characters may be embedded in the modem init string
  377.     to add a .5 second delay.
  378.  
  379.   Host mode should detect DTR drop at any time during a
  380.   session and then wait for another login.
  381.   
  382.   The Elapsed timer now keys on DTR when the port is set
  383.   to a modem connection.
