  17. <p>    It was a precision raid. Israeli commandos landed by
  18. helicopter outside the southern Lebanese town of Gibchite early
  19. Friday morning. They slipped through the dark to their target:
  20. an apartment on the eastern edge of town belonging to Sheik
  21. Abdel Karim Obeid, chief military commander of the southern
  22. Lebanese wing of Hizballah (Party of God), the fundamentalist
  23. Shi`ite group with close ties to Iran. The Israelis burst in,
  24. locked up Obeid's wife and children, and carried Obeid and two
  25. assistants off to Israel.

  27. <p>    Jerusalem cited ample military reasons for wanting Obeid
  28. out of action, claiming he has instigated dozens of attacks
  29. against Israel and the so-called security zone it maintains in
  30. Lebanon. But kidnaping is not the usual method of the Israelis.
  31. They may actually have wanted to acquire bait for a hostage
  32. swap. Two affiliate groups of Hizballah are believed to be
  33. holding three Israeli prisoners of war captured in 1986, two of
  34. them soldiers taken in the security zone and the third an air
  35. force navigator. Americans wonder if U.S. Lieut. Colonel William
  36. Higgins, head of the United Nations peacekeeping force in
  37. Lebanon, who was seized by Hizballah last year, might be part
  38. of a swap.
