  31. 1. INTRODUCTION
  32. ===============

  34.     Welcome to XWorkplace V0.9.20.
  35.  
  36.     XWorkplace is a complex set of replacement classes for the
  37.     OS/2 Workplace Shell to enhance the WPS's behavior in many
  38.     ways.
  39.  
  40.     This README has additional information which is not included
  41.     in the XWorkplace User Guide. Please read through all of this
  42.     before installing.

  44.     After installation, you can find this README in the main
  45.     install directory.

  48.     About this release
  49.     ------------------
  50.  
  51.     Things looked pretty good with V0.9.19, but a few fixes
  52.     still had to be made, so here's my next attempt.
  53.  
  54.     Because I got bored bugfixing, I also added a few new
  55.     (optional) features. To go for the exciting stuff
  56.     right away, go to "Workplace Shell", "Folder views",
  57.     and enable "Lazy icon loading" and "mark shadow icons".
  58.  
  59.     For details, refer to the "Version Notices" in the
  60.     "XWorkplace User Guide". To extract the documentation
  61.     only, see "2. INSTALLATION" below.

  64. 2. REQUIREMENTS
  65. ===============
  66.  
  67.     XWorkplace is developed and tested only under eComStation
  68.     1.0, which is equivalent -- as far as the OS/2 code base
  69.     is concerned -- to the Merlin Convenience Package 1 (MCP1).
  70.  
  71.     Since I can no longer get my Warp 3 partition to boot and
  72.     do not particularly care for spending more time on that,
  73.     XWORKPLACE IS NO LONGER BEING TESTED ON WARP 3. It might
  74.     work, but it might not. Use it at your own risk.
  75.  
  76.     Starting with V0.9.19, XWorkplace makes a few assumptions
  77.     about some internal WPS structures, which might be
  78.     different on Warp 3. Again, I don't know.
  79.  
  80.     The following should be safe, since they are based on
  81.     the same IBM code:

  92. 3. INSTALLATION
  93. ===============
  94.  
  95.     XWorkplace must be installed using WarpIN. After all files
  96.     have been copied, WarpIN will restart your Workplace Shell
  97.     to make sure the changes become active. A reboot should not
  98.     be necessary.
  99.  
  100.     WARNING: It was reported that the Workplace Shell hangs itself
  101.     up after the restart if you have the "Automatic lockup on
  102.     startup" setting enabled. In that case, disable that setting
  103.     before allowing WarpIN to restart the WPS.
  104.  
  105.     ---> In any case, before installing, MAKE A WPS BACKUP.
  106.  
  107.     If you are still unsure whether you should use XWorkplace at
  108.     this point, you can select the "Documentation" package in this
  109.     archive only. This way can then read through XWorkplace's
  110.     documentation first and decide then whether to actually install
  111.     all of it. To install later, simply double-click on XWorkplace's
  112.     .WPI archive again.
  113.

  115. 4. UPGRADING
  116. ============
  117.  
  118.     Upgrading from XWorkplace
  119.     -------------------------
  120.  
  121.     IMPORTANT: If you are installing while the WPS is running
  122.     (which is most probably the case), WarpIN will show you
  123.     confirmation dialogs about various files that are currently
  124.     in use, most importantly, XFLDR.DLL. This is normal because
  125.     those modules are loaded while the WPS (and thus XWorkplace)
  126.     is running.
  127.  
  128.     In those dialogs, you MUST select "Unlock (DosReplaceModule)",
  129.     or your installation will not be fully updated.
  130.  
  131.     If you get this message for a help file (.HLP extension), the
  132.     XWorkplace help file is currently held open by the WPS.
  133.     Unfortunately, with OS/2, it is impossible to unlock data files
  134.     automatically. To unlock the help file, while the "locked"
  135.     dialog is showing, simply open any standard WPS help panel
  136.     (e.g. by clicking on an empty space on the desktop and
  137.     pressing F1), which will unlock XWorkplace's help file.
  138.  
  139.     Besides, you will probably get a notification message that
  140.     XWPDAEMN.EXE is running and must be killed. Have WarpIN kill
  141.     that program (which is the XWorkplace Daemon).
  142.  
  143.     If upgrading doesn't work, have WarpIN remove the installed
  144.     XWorkplace version first, restart the WPS, and install the
  145.     new version then.
  146.  
  147.  
  148.     Upgrading from XFolder
  149.     ----------------------
  150.  
  151.     XWorkplace is the successor to XFolder (the last XFolder
  152.     version was V0.85).
  153.  
  154.     XWorkplace and XFolder cannot coexist, since XWorkplace
  155.     provides all the features of XFolder 0.85 plus many bugfixes
  156.     and even more features.
  157.  
  158.     As a result, if XFolder is installed, XWorkplace will
  159.     disable your XFolder installation.
  160.  
  161.     You should install XWorkplace to a directory OTHER than
  162.     your existing XFolder directory to make sure no file
  163.     conflicts occur. Several people have reported that
  164.     installing to the same directory can hang your WPS.
  165.  
  166.     XWorkplace can take over your existing XFolder 0.85 settings,
  167.     if present. You will be prompted for that during the first
  168.     WPS restart after installation. However, many new settings
  169.     have arrived, so many will be initially disabled.
  170.  
  171.     If you prefer to go back to your existing XFolder installation
  172.     later (after all, this is a developer's release), have WarpIN
  173.     de-install XWorkplace and install XFolder again, using
  174.     INSTALL.CMD in your XFolder directory. Your old XFolder
  175.     settings remain untouched by XWorkplace.

  178. 5. NATIONAL LANGUAGE SUPPORT
  179. ============================
  180.  
  181.     This archive contains XWorkplace National Language Support
  182.     (NLS) for English only.
  183.  
  184.     However, XWorkplace is prepared for supporting additional
  185.     languages via additional NLS packages, which are maintained
  186.     and released by people other than me.
  187.  
  188.     Some are listed on www.xworkplace.org on the download page,
  189.     but you will probably find more up-to-date information about
  190.     NLS packages on the mailing lists (see CONTACT below).

  193. 6. GETTING STARTED
  194. ==================

  196.     In any case, after installation, open the new "XWorkplace Setup"
  197.     object first and go to the "Features" page. This is the most
  198.     central place to enable XWorkplace features. Press the "Help"
  199.     button there to get more information.
