Performance Issues:
Dead Reckoning was designed to run on a wide variety of machines,
both with 3D acceleration and without. The program has auto-detect
functions built into it which should give you the best performance
for your system. There are several settings you can control to
manually configure the game to your preferences. These are
available under Options.
DirectX
This is where you determine which device will handle your graphics.
If you have a 3D card you should definitely select that as your
device. If you don't, you should probably choose 'Direct3D HAL'. If
you are playing software only and have an MMX enabled Pentium,
you should choose 'MMX Emulation'. The performance of the other
settings will depend on the hardware and drivers you have installed
on your system.
These are options available under Detail Level:
Clipping Plane - This determines how far down the arena you can
see. Setting it to 'Close' gives the fastest play as it doesn't need to
draw as many images. This does limit how much you can see though.
'Far' lets you see more, but may play slower. Most machines will
play well with the 'Default' setting.
Game Resolution - This setting has a great impact on how you
experience the game. Low resolution can play much faster, but
doesn't look as good. High resolution looks better, but can be slow in
software mode. We recommend low resolution for software only. If
you have a 3D card, the game will play at full speed on high
resolution. Generally 3D cards will not support low resolution mode.
Texture Filtering - When this is on, the program filters some of the
textures to give you a more clean image. This does slow the game
down a bit. If your game is playing sluggishly, this should probably
be the first item you turn off.
Heads-Up-Display (HUD)
The HUD gives you important information about your game, but the
game can play faster without it. If you would like your game to play
faster, you can turn the HUD off with the 'H' key. There is also a
view with a minimal HUD available which you can select using the
<Tab> key. This will play faster, but still give you important
information about your game.
Net Connections
When playing network games, your performance is limited by the
speed of your connection. This is especially true on dial-up internet
connections and modem play. Try to connect at the highest speed
possible to get the best performance. A 33.6Kbps modem will give
you the best performance in this instance. Also remember, you
should always choose the fastest system in the group to be your host
machine.
Memory
If there is not enough free memory available, the program will run
slower. Please be sure to quit all other programs before running the
game.
Troubleshooting:
Many issues concerning performance and reliability with Dead
Reckoning are tied to Microsoft DirectX and the accompanying
drivers. If you are experiencing problems with our game, please
make sure you have the latest driver versions which work with
DirectX v5, and that they are installed and working properly. You
can get the latest information about DirectX from the Microsoft web
site at: www.microsoft.com
Note: Dead Reckoning is designed to work with DirectX 5, which is
included on the CD. It's performance and functionality may be
different under later versions of DirectX. If you have updated your
DirectX drivers and are experiencing problems, please check on our
web site for news and updates on the product.
Dead Reckoning is an extremely graphically intense action game. As
such, it is quite demanding on the equipment needed to play. If you
have an older 3D accelerator card, specifically one with only 1 or
2MB of video memory, you may see some strangely shaded objects in
the levels. This is because your card doesn't have enough memory to
hold all the textural information for these cylinders. The solutions to
this are to either run the game in software mode, or upgrade the
amount of memory on your video card.
