  1. How to run Dark Forces WITHOUT a CD:
  2.  
  3. - Make a full installation from the Dark Forces CD to your harddisk (takes
  4. up app.68 MB). Then copy the file called "CD.ID" from the Dark Forces CD 
  5. to the root directory of your harddisk (or bootdisk). Take out the original 
  6. Dark Forces CD from the CD-drive and start the game. The program will not 
  7. be able to find the Dark Forces CD and will ask about the correct drive 
  8. letter. Enter the letter of your harddisk (or bootdisk) where you copied 
  9. the file "CD.ID". That's all. Now the game will run without needing a CD 
  10. at all.

  12. - It is also possible to install the game without the cutscenes (not much of
  13. a loss IMHO :) ). Then the game will only use app.35 MegaByte on your 
  14. harddisk and will run just as smoothly.

  16. - Please note that it will only be possible to change the game/sound/joystick
  17. setup with the SETUP.EXE in your DF directory if you are using a bootdisk or
  18. re-edit the file "DRIVE.CD" back to your CD-Rom drive.

  20. - Installing Dark Forces for the first time may automatically create the file
  21. "DRIVE.CD" in your Dark Forces directory (e.g. "C:\DARK"). This usually 
  22. happens when your CD-Rom has a letter other than "D". In this case you may 
  23. edit the file "DRIVE.CD" from your CD-ROM drive (usually "D") to the letter 
  24. for your hard disk (e.g. "C" instead of "D"). If using a bootdisk, you can
  25. also change it to an "A". The file "DRIVE.CD" is an 1 byte file, consisting
  26. of one letter only.

  28. - New or modified Dark Forces levels created with a DF editor do run 
  29. perfectly with this harddisk installation. Just copy the new/modified 
  30. levels into the Dark Forces directory of your harddisk (e.g. C:\DARK).

  33. Please note that the above mentioned method should only be used if you do 
  34. own a Dark Forces CD yourself. Not only that it is highly illegal to pirate 
  35. copy software, the guys at Lucas Arts shouldn't be cheated out on this game 
  36. Great publishers like Lucas Arts should be supported with buying their 
  37. software or we may never see Rebel Assault 2!

  40. that I could play other music CD's - like Star Trek soundtracks ;) - while 
  41. fighting the dark forces of the empire.)
