  4.    
  5.    Some of the questions and answers below pertain only to the WindowsÆ
  6.    or the MacTMOS platform. This is indicated by (Windows) or (MacOS)
  7.    being placed after the "Q:" If there is no such indication, assume
  8.    that the question is pertinent to any platform.

  14.     1. Q: Is MI/X really free?
  15.        
  16.      A: Yes. No strings attached. MicroImages does retain a copyright on
  17.      it, however.

  20.     2. Q: Why is it really free?
  21.        
  22.      A: MicroImages gains name recognition and good will. MicroImages
  23.      maintains MI/X as the X Server for its professional TNT image
  24.      processing, geospatial data management, and desktop cartography
  25.      products. In order to make the TNT products work exactly the same
  26.      on all Windows, Macintosh and UNIX computers, MicroImages needed a
  27.      robust and stable X Server whose future was not in the hands of
  28.      some other company. (MicroImages also enjoys the irony that some
  29.      ARC/INFO users will run our competitor's product on our free X
  30.      Server.)

  33.     3. Q: How can I get a copy of MI/X?
  34.        
  35.      A: You can download it from MicroImages' FTP site, or from mirror
  36.      sites.

  60.     4. Q: Can I mirror MI/X on my FTP site?
  61.        
  62.      A: Yes. We do ask that you agree to the following few conditions:
  63.           + The files you distribute must be unaltered copies of the
  64.             package as distributed by MicroImages, Inc.: this is to
  65.             include the binary executables as well as any configuration
  66.             files and text files contained with it.
  67.           + Please register your mirror site with MicroImages, so that we
  68.             know about the mirror and can point others to it, and can
  69.             keep you informed on changes in the software. You can
  70.             register online at this URL:

  72.           + You may not reverse engineer, or convert into any human
  73.             conceivable form, the binary executable files that make up
  74.             MI/X.

  83.     5. Q: When I click on the links on your download page, I get an error
  84.        message saying that the file doesn't exist or that the link is no
  85.        good. What is wrong?
  86.        
  87.      A: The links aren't bad. Some browsers will return an error message
  88.      indicating that the link is bad or that the file wasn't found, when
  89.      in fact, the browser times out because the site is so busy.

  92.     6. Q: I'm having trouble downloading MI/X. Can you e-mail it to me?
  93.        
  94.      A: No. If you are having trouble downloading, try again at a
  95.      different time, or try a mirror site. MI/X is popular and traffic
  96.      is heavy, which can cause download problems during peak periods.
  97.      Attempting to email it would only consume our valuable staff time
  98.      and would not evade such problems as network traffic or slow
  99.      connections. If you don't have a good enough network connection,
  100.      then we encourage you to order [11]TNTlite on CD-ROM from
  101.      MicroImages, which includes MI/X, and which you can obtain for
  102.      costs of shipping and handling. Ordering the TNTlite on CD gives
  103.      you access to our award-winning [12]geospatial data analysis
  104.      software, and many Getting Started tutorial booklets with sample
  105.      data: as well as Microsoft Internet Explorer and Adobe Acrobat
  106.      Reader for various platforms. It is well worth the investment!

  109.     7. Q: (Windows) I've downloaded all the files for MI/X for Windows,
  110.        how do I unpack it?
  111.        
  112.      A: Make sure that all the files are in the same directory, (don't
  113.      put any capital letters in the name and don't make its name longer
  114.      than 8 characters) then type GETME1ST.EXE to start unpacking the
  115.      files. This will make a bunch of new files, one of which is called
  116.      "SETUP.EXE." To continue the installation, type SETUP.EXE and
  117.      follow the instructions on the screen. On older versions, the setup
  118.      program for TNTlite and MI/X is the same, during install it will
  119.      bring up a list of files that are missing. By each file is a letter
  120.      that indicates what it is a component of. As long as no X's (to
  121.      mark Xserver files) appear, you have all the pieces you need and
  122.      can proceed with the install.

  125.     8. Q: (MacOS) I've downloaded MI/X for MacOS, how do I unpack it?
  126.        
  127.      A: You will need a decompression utitlity. One of the most popular
  128.      utilities is called StuffIt Expander. Drag the file you've
  129.      downloaded on to the StuffIt Expander icon, and that is all you
  130.      need to do.

  133.     9. Q: (Windows) When I try to run the setup program created from
  134.        getme1st.exe, I get an error message saying "can't find
  135.        file0001.bin". What's happening?
  136.        
  137.      A: file0001.bin isn't in the same directory as setup.exe, or it was
  138.      renamed to something other than file0001.bin, or you didn't
  139.      download the file. Note that sometimes some browsers have been
  140.      known to change the name of the file when you save it to your disk.
  141.      If the name of file0001.bin is changed to anything different,
  142.      setup.exe will not find it, and your setup will obviously fail.

  145.    10. Q: (Windows) I downloaded the installation files for Windows 95
  146.        and ran the setup.exe. After selecting 'install/setup mi/x server
  147.        with twm' dialog box I received the message: "Unable to update
  148.        tntproc.ini." Then the install ended. Any suggestions?
  149.        
  150.      A: Previously this FAQ said this problem was fixed. However, it
  151.      seems that people are still having problems with this. This is an
  152.      error that we are investigating. It is sometimes solved by
  153.      installing to the default directory.

  156.    11. Q: (Windows) How do I start the MI/X program after installing it?
  157.        
  158.      A: You can start MI/X from the "Start" Menu (Start / Programs /
  159.      Free TNTlite products / MIXServer ) which runs a program called
  160.      TNTstart to launch MI/X, or you can change to the directory where
  161.      MI/X is located and type 'tntstart' . In some rare cases using the
  162.      TNTstart program to launch MI/X does not work. In those cases issue
  163.      the following commands from a DOS prompt (you may have to be in the
  164.      directory where you installed MI/X):
  165.  
  166.                 XS
  167.                 TWM
  168.         
  169.      This will start the server and its window manager manually. Running
  170.      the commands from the command line can also be a good way to
  171.      trouble shoot since you may get error messages reported to the
  172.      console that may help you discern what is going wrong. You would
  173.      not see these if you were running the program using tntstart.

  176.    12. Q: When starting MI/X, I see the MI/X screen come up briefly and
  177.        then goes away and then I get an error message. What is happening?
  178.        
  179.      A: Connect to the machine that you want to run MI/X against before
  180.      you start MI/X.
  181.          _____________________________________________________________
  182.        
  183.    13. Q: I login to my remote UNIX host. Then I start MI/X and it comes
  184.        up okay. Then when I try to start an X session, or send a remote X
  185.        client to the machine running MI/X, MI/X quits. It does this every
  186.        time. What am I doing wrong?
  187.        
  188.      A: Try changing your preferences. For Windows, edit tntserv.ini and
  189.      make sure that CloseOnMenuExit is set to No, e.g.
  190.  
  191.                 CloseOnMenuExit=No
  192.         
  193.      For the Mac, open File / Preferences, select the "Preferences" icon
  194.      on the left, and make sure that the "Auto exit when last client
  195.      dies" checkbox is not checked.

  198.    14. Q: (MacOS) When I try to start MI/X I get a message saying "unable
  199.        to open :0.0". What is going on?
  200.        
  201.      A: Make sure that under the "Sharing Setup" control panel the
  202.      Macintosh has been given a name.

  205.    15. Q: Can I use a window manager other than twm with MI/X?
  206.        
  207.      A: Yes, however twm is the window manager we support. We can't tell
  208.      you how to configure other window managers, or even guarantee that
  209.      they'll work.

  212.    16. Q: (MacOS) How do I configure twm?
  213.        
  214.      A: If you put a file named "system.twmrc" in the same folder as the
  215.      twm program on your computer, the twm program will read
  216.      configuration settings from it. Consult the documentation, [13]man
  217.      page, etc. for twm to learn what to put in system.twmrc to
  218.      configure twm. Note that the current version of MI/X for MacOS does
  219.      not support the launching of X clients from a twm menu. This is
  220.      forthcoming in later versions.

  223.    17. Q: (Windows) How do I configure twm?
  224.        
  225.      A: The MI/X distribution comes with a file named TNTSERV.TWM. This
  226.      is twm's configuration file. To learn the format of TNTSERV.TWM,
  227.      consult the documentation, [14]man page, etc. for twm. If you wish
  228.      to create a custom format for twm, you can make a configuration
  229.      file with any name, and direct twm to use it instead of its default
  230.      configurations. This is done by using the -f option, i.e. twm -f
  231.      myconfigfile.twm

  234.    18. Q: (MacOS) I've made an unfortunate configuration change that
  235.        causes MI/X to hang, now each time I try to start MI/X, it crashes
  236.        without even letting me get to the Preferences dialog to fix the
  237.        configuration. What do I do?
  238.        
  239.      A: If you hold the <COMMAND> key while double-clicking the MI/X
  240.      application icon, MI/X will open the Preferences dialog for you
  241.      without launching the X server. You can then undo any unfortunate
  242.      configurations.

  245.    19. Q: (Windows) How do I start the MI/X program after installing it?
  246.        
  247.      A: You can start MI/X from the "Start" Menu (Start / Programs /
  248.      Free TNTlite products / MIXServer ) which runs a program called
  249.      TNTstart to launch MI/X. In some rare cases using the TNTstart
  250.      program to launch MI/X does not work. In those cases issue the

  260.    20. Q: How do I use MI/X to start an X session with a remote host?
  261.        
  262.      A: Start MI/X. Telnet to the remote host. Set the DISPLAY
  263.      environment variable on the remote host to the machine you are
  264.      running MI/X on. For example on Solaris (running csh):
  265.         
  266.                 setenv DISPLAY mymachine:0.0
  267.         
  268.      or failing that:
  269.                 setenv DISPLAY my.machine's.ip.number:0.0
  270.         
  271.      replacing "my.machines's.ip.number" with the actual IP number of
  272.      the local machine running MI/X.
  273.      After this, you can launch whatever X applications you wish on your
  274.      remote host and they will display on the machine running MI/X. To
  275.      invoke a command shell try:
  276.  
  277.                 xterm &
  278.         
  279.      When the xterm comes up you can close the telnet session. The
  280.      commands may differ on various flavors of UNIX.

  283.    21. Q: What fonts can I use with MI/X?
  284.        
  285.        A:
  286.        
  287.    BDF and PCF fonts.
  288.      _________________________________________________________________
  289.    
  290.      Q: There are a lot of fonts included in the distribution that I
  291.    won't use and are taking up space on my hard drive (such as Chinese
  292.    and Japanese character fonts.) Can I get rid of some of these fonts
  293.    and still use MI/X?
  294.    
  295.      A: Yes, you can get rid of some of the extra fonts. Of course, you
  296.      will still need to keep some of them. Here are some examples of
  297.      fonts to keep:
  298.  
  299.         7x13b.bdf        -misc-fixed-bold-r-normal--13-120-75-75-c-70-iso8859-1
  300.         ascii.bdf        -mi-fixed-medium-r-normal--16-160-72-72-c-160-ascii-1
  301.         olcursor.bdf     -sun-open look cursor-----12-120-75-75-p-160-sunolcurs
  302. or-1
  303.         olgl10.bdf       -sun-open look glyph-----10-100-75-75-p-101-sunolglyph

  309.      The last part of the font is the language encoding. Chances are
  310.      that if it isn't "iso8859-1", then you don't need it. Exceptions
  311.      are the other files above. "cursor.bdf" is especially important as
  312.      it contains the cursors used by the X Window System.

  314.    
  315.      Q: I've got all the standard X fonts here, but in the PCF format.
  316.    Are these compatible with MI/X, or do they need to be in the BDF
  317.    format? And how do I tell MI/X to add them?
  318.    
  319.      A: Yes, you can use the PCF format. Find the BDF/MISC directory (it
  320.      should be in the directory into which you install MI/X), there
  321.      should be a file called "fonts.dir" which contains examples of how
  322.      to add BDF and PCF fonts. The "fonts.dir" file for MI/X corresponds
  323.      to the file with the same name on a UNIX X server.

  326.      Q: Okay, I understand that to add a font, it has to be in a *.bdf or
  327.    *.pcf format and that they have to be added to the fonts.dir, but how
  328.    do I do that?
  329.    
  330.      A: First, open the font in a text editor. The first few lines will
  331.      look like this:
  332.  
  333. STARTFONT 2.1
  334. FONT -Misc-Fixed-Medium-R-Normal--10-100-75-75-C-60-ISO8859-1

  337.      Copy the line that appears after FONT. Next, open the font.dir file
  338.      with a text editor. It will look like this:
  339.

  345.      Note that there is a number at the top of the file. This has to
  346.      match the number of fonts in the file. (I've only included the
  347.      first three in this example. The actual file would have 84 more
  348.      entries.) Once the fonts.dir is open, go to the bottom of the file
  349.      and add the name of the font you are adding and paste in the
  350.      information you copied from the font. Then change the number at the
  351.      top of the file to reflect the new number of fonts in the file. In
  352.      my example, I would change 87 to 88.

  355.      Q: How can I delete fonts?
  356.    
  357.      A: Follow the steps mentioned above for opening the fonts.dir file,
  358.      delete the entry for the font you are deleting, change the number
  359.      at the top of the font.dir file to reflect the correct number of
  360.      fonts listed in the file. Save the font.dir file and delete the
  361.      *.bdf or *.pcf file.

  364.      Q: Can I use a fontserver for MI/X?
  365.    
  366.      A: No. Fonts have to copied to the machine running MI/X.
  367.      _________________________________________________________________
  368.    
  369.      Q: (Windows) Why can't I use the ALT-GR key sequences (for European
  370.    characters) with MI/X?
  371.    
  372.      A: This problem does not occur with the TNT products. It may occur
  373.      with other X clients for various reasons.
  374.      _________________________________________________________________
  375.    
  376.      Q: (Windows) Why do I only see two files available for download...
  377.    there used to be three. I can't install because the installer program
  378.    asks for file0002 but I can't find it on MicroImages' website.
  379.    
  380.      A: Since the 19 Februaray 1997 version of MI/X, only GETME1ST.EXE
  381.      and FILE0001.BIN are required to install MI/X. Previous versions
  382.      required FILE0002.BIN in addition to the other two files. If the
  383.      setup program says that you can't install because you're missing
  384.      FILE0002.BIN, you need to download the latest version. You will
  385.      have to download both GETME1ST.EXE and FILE0001.BIN to get the 19
  386.      Feburary 1997 version, since the organization of both files has
  387.      changed since the previous version.

  389.    
  390.      Q: (Windows) I don't have a three-button mouse, but I need three
  391.    buttons for my X clients. How do I do this?
  392.    
  393.      A: Currently, if you want to have three buttons for your X clients,
  394.      you need to have a three button mouse on your PC. There is no key
  395.      sequence or shortcut to emulate a third button on Windows like
  396.      there is on the Mac.
  397.      If you want to use the paste/insert text function in X which is by
  398.      default mapped to the middle button which is unavailable on the PC,
  399.      then there may be a workaround: You can use the xmodmap program to
  400.      modify how the mouse events from the server (MI/X) are interpreted
  401.      by the X client (i.e. xterm). For instance you can swap the middle
  402.      and right mouse button with this command:
  403.  
  404.         xmodmap -display mix.machine.name:0.0 -e "pointer = 1 3 2"
  405.  
  406.      That will make the right mouse button act like the "middle" button
  407.      of a three-button mouse, thereby allowing selecting and copying
  408.      text with the left button, and pasting/inserting with the right
  409.      button. Note that on a two-button mouse you will still be missing a
  410.      button (the button that was the right button, or button 3): you
  411.      just switched around what button does what using the xmodmap
  412.      program. So if you need true three-button functionality, the best
  413.      solution is still to get a three button mouse.
  414.      If you have a three-button mouse and can't get the buttons to work
  415.      properly, make sure that you have drivers properly installed and
  416.      configured for the three-button mouse so that Windows can handle
  417.      three buttons instead of the default two. Specifically, you will
  418.      need to tell the driver that the middle button of the mouse is to
  419.      be mapped to a "Middle Button" function, and not to some other
  420.      nifty (and tempting) Windows shortcut. Note that if you do this,
  421.      the "Middle Button" function will not used under Windows itself,
  422.      but will be accessible to MI/X and clients running in it. Logitech
  423.      provides three-button mice and drivers that work and have been
  424.      tested with MI/X. Also, the Intellipoint mouse sold by Microsoft
  425.      offers a rolling wheel that acts as a scroller controller on the
  426.      mouse when turned while in Windows applications, and when clicked,
  427.      it can be set to function as a "middle" mouse button which works in
  428.      MI/X.

  431.      Q: (Windows) Can I run the X11R6 executables that that have been
  432.    ported to Windows NT?
  433.    
  434.      A: Yes. Make sure that your DISPLAY environment variable points to
  435.      the machine running MI/X, i.e. set DISPLAY=hostname:0.0 You can
  436.      then run xclock, oclock, etc. on a PC running NT or 95 instead of
  437.      using a remote UNIX host.

  440.      Q: (Windows) It seems that MI/X always takes up the full screen when
  441.    it is launched. Is there a way I can set the screen size for MI/X?
  442.    
  443.      A: Yes. Edit tntserv.ini and add the following entires under the
  444.         [XSERVER] section
  445.         NumColumns=n
  446.         NumRows=n
  447.  
  448.      with n being the number of rows and columns you want MI/X to
  449.      occupy.

  452.      Q: Can I cut and paste with MI/X?
  453.    
  454.      A: MI/X will support cut and paste of text to other X applications,
  455.      but not graphics.
  456.      _________________________________________________________________

  458.      Q: Does MI/X support xauth?
  459.    
  460.      A: No.
  461.      _________________________________________________________________
  462.    
  463.      Q: Can I use MI/X to run UNIX programs locally on my Windows or Mac
  464.    computer?
  465.    
  466.      A: No. Using MI/X, you can run a UNIX program remotely on the UNIX
  467.      machine itself, sending the display output to MI/X on your local PC
  468.      or Mac. You cannot however download a program compiled for UNIX and
  469.      attempt to run it on your Mac or PC using MI/X (or anything else
  470.      for that matter). If you have X programs compiled for your Mac or
  471.      your PC, then yes, you can use MI/X as the graphical X environment
  472.      for these programs. That is why we created MI/X in the first place!

  475.      Q: Is there a way to use XS to do a rsh or rexec directly to the
  476.    station I want to login to?
  477.    
  478.      A: No. The MI/X distribution does not include an rsh or rexec
  479.      client. You can obtain rsh or rexec clients from other sources.

  482.      Q: (MacOS) Does MI/X support dual monitors?
  483.    
  484.      A: Yes, as of the 21 Aug 1997 version. Previous versions do not.
  485.      _________________________________________________________________

  487.      Q: Is MI/X capable of xdm queries?
  488.    
  489.      A: No. Although there may be options and preferences to set
  490.      regarding xdm, they have not yet been implemented.

  493.      Q: (Windows) Do you have a version of MI/X that will run on a
  494.    Windows 3.1 machine?
  495.    
  496.      A: Yes and No. Actually there is a version of MI/X for Windows 3.1:
  497.      it is shipped with our software for Windows 3.1. However, you
  498.      cannot use this version of MI/X as an X server for clients run on a
  499.      remote host. This is possible on Windows95/NT and MacOS because
  500.      MI/X uses sockets technology available in those operating systems,
  501.      which is unfortunately, not available in Windows 3.1.
  502.      Now, if you have a bunch of local X clients (such as TNTlite which
  503.      you can also download for free at
  504.      [15]http://www.microimages.com/freestuf/), MI/X for Windows 3.1
  505.      will be useful to you. But if you're hoping to use your Windows 3.1
  506.      box as an X terminal using MI/X like you would on Windows 95, then
  507.      sorry, you're out of luck.
  508.      So, if you mean, "Can I use MI/X as an X server for clients on
  509.      remote machines accessed via a network?", then, no, MI/X for
  510.      Windows 3.1 does not support this feature. Therefore, we do not
  511.      package MI/X separately for distribution for Windows 3.1 as we do
  512.      for the Windows 95, Windows NT, Mac 68k or Mac PowerPC version of
  513.      MI/X. This is just one of many reasons that MicroImages recommends
  514.      that users of Windows 3.1 upgrade to Windows 95.

  517.      Q: (MacOS) Are there any plans to support the LBX (low band width)
  518.    extension?
  519.    
  520.      A: No.

  523.      Q: (Windows) Is it possible to run MI/X on my Windows 95 machine to

  536.      A: The problem occurs because the Motif AWT libraries use the Font

  538.      when using a remote X server sometimes this font isn't available.
